I loved Sweetwaters. They always had special shows for Mother's Day. My sister and I would bring my mom there and it was a great time.

How did I get hip to Sweetwaters? OK, so it's about 1919-92. I get off from work in the Village, pick up a copy of the Voice, stop off to have a burger and some fries at a diner on 7th Ave below 8th St. So I'm in the diner reading the Voice and I see an ad: the Delfonics are going to be at this club called Sweetwaters. Now two things: The Delfonics were a three-man group; the photo, however, showed four dudes. Now, William Hart, the lead singer, had not been with the group for quite some time. Had Hart returned? Hard to tell by the blurry photo. But one guy in the photo kinda looked like him. And if it was him, did he still have his voice?
Anyway, I noticed there were two shows. So I decide to get there for the end of the first and see if the second was worth my little change. Well, if you remember, there was a bar area where you could sit and hear the show for free. So I go in and on my way in I see it's Hart brothers, Randy Cain AND Major Harris on stage doing their last song (La La, of course). And they sound good. Real good. So I go to the bar and order a brewski, When they finish, I go to ATM, get me some cash, and get a seat at a table for the second show.
That was my introduction to Sweetwaters. I would eventually see the Dramatics and Curtis Mayfield there. The Curtis show was - well, Curtis. And he didn't have a drummer - nor did he need one. Just him, his guitar, a bassist and percussionist. It was impressive.
BTW: I'm glad I don't eat burgers and fries any more.
