Our Amazing Morning with Two Orphan African Elephants

  • Some sad updates
A year after our visit, Doug Groves was tragically killed while out walking with Jabu and Morula, trampled to death by a wild elephant. The world lost an incredible man. RIP Doug. His wife Sandi continues their incredible work.
Then, in July 2021, Jabu also died after being released into the wild. The cause of his death was not clear but it is suspected that he was killed in a fight with another bull elephant. RIP beautiful boy.
    -----
While visiting the Okavango Delta region in Botswana, we had the chance to participate in the experience of a lifetime, when we spent the morning with Jabu and Morula, two orphaned African elephants who are cared for by the Living with Elephants Foundation run by Doug and Sandi Groves.
You can read more about our experience on our blog:
    www.freetworoa...
We learned a great deal about these two beautiful creatures and about elephants in general. It was an experience we will never forget.

@@philippinevlogsandgamingpl7671 They're not descended from the Mammoths. African Elephants, Asian Elephants and Mammoths are all descended from a common origin. In fact, they're sister branches and not descended from one another. The Mammoths are also more closely related to Asian elephants than they are to African elephants.

EMRS I was fortunate enough to meet them ( and a 3rd timid female. Wonder what happened to her?) in Nov 2014. Overwhelming, emotional, extraordinary. Viewing this, I’m instantly transported. Touching this huge boy, kissing his trunk, rubbing my hands over those bristly hairs. So gentle, so accomodating, so utterly wonderful. The highlight was holding Morula’s trunk as we walked together. Was told by “mum” Sandi that she doesn’t like walking alone! Later, after delicious lunch in the welcome shade, I cuddled her and was rewarded with “kisses” on my face. I returned to the table and promptly burst into tears from the emotion of the moment. Long after I’m too old to travel, I’ll return to those many photos and videos to relive an experience like no other.

Such regal presence and ponderous grace. They have the best attributes of humans without our crippling faults. The herd defines the word 'family' in its best iterations. The elephant has nothing to learn from humans except to fear us. Humans will never live long enough to learn all they have to teach us. Unfortunately the elephant will have disappeared long before man absorbs the elephants regal spirit and sense of order. At their passing we will be alone again. Not sure there will be another land creature to take its place. We should began weeping for our stupendous loss.

I can't help but wonder what the white cane Doug keeps carrying around is for...one end seems to be kept out of sight of the camera most of the time...is this what would be used to "control" Jabu if he was to get overly excited? Don't misunderstand me here, please; I am one of your true fans; what you have done for and with Jabu is amazing, opening up the eyes of elephant keepers world over about improving care, and increasing understanding of these mighty amazing animals.

He's a five tonne elephant so the cane would really do nothing if he got too agitated. From memory Doug used it to point to bits of their anatomy when he was giving us a really interesting rundown of it. I can assure you I wasn't trying to keep the cane out of sight of the camera. Actually we got to see how Doug handles things when Jabu gets agitated because just after we turned up, a herd of wild elephants started to come through the area and Jabu (who at the time was still a bit skittish about them) began to get a bit vocal. So we just retreated briefly to our jeeps while Doug took Jabu off to one side to let him calm down while the herd passed through. Very masterfully done.

What amazing creatures elephants are! I hope humans find it in their hearts not to kill them and let them live forever.

Wonderful animal. Does the elephant ever get mad?

    • @mamacat63
      @mamacat63 3 года назад

Oh, yes, when they go into something called musth, which means they're ready to mate. You can tell by looking at them because hormones come out of special glands on their temples. The amount of hormones in their bodies increases to approximately 60 times the normal amount, and they are very dangerous during that time

Ah! I finally have them all sitting down at my dinner table together and unsuspecting of any mischief. Had to do a bit of bonding first but it is going to be worth it I'm sure. See you in the next video. Jumbo 🐘🐘🤗🤗

Caring a giant like caring a small factory, the moving factory really worthy people, the largest creature none of can stands near by but two superstrong persons.
