  • In this episode, Noel Salas visits XTR Epoxy Pro in Oceanside, California for surfboard foam testing. Noel introduces Javier Huarcaya-Pro to share what makes XTR 10 so special. Javier compares XTR 10 to PU Poly foam and EPS foam with a stringer and actually runs some blanks over with his truck to show the durability of this extruded foam. The XTR 10 foam out performs with very little dents. The foam is 100% waterproof and can be customized with a super light glass job called "Carbon lite" or, if you prefer, it can be glassed a little heavier for bigger surf. This remarkable foam core makes your board last for 3, 4 or even 5 years (says Javier) with very little pressure dents, all while keeping the original pop and snap like it did when it was brand new. Noel loves his "G-Skate" and Peppa Twin with parallel carbon that is located on the heel and toe of the board making is sensitive and quicker than center flex. carbon. His "Red Tiger" was made with a center flex carbon, which is more familiar to most and similar to a stringer. After thorough testing Noel says, "the new 'XTR10' Foam is the best on the Planet". Enjoy!!

Cool look at the man himself! I have a lost mini driver 6’2 in XTR. Bought it used, who knows how old it is. I’ve ridden it hard for 4 years. Stays in my car. Works amazing in everything from waist to well overhead. Never worried about dinging it or pulling into shallow close outs. Probably the best board I’ve ever had. Super light and paddles insane. Thanks Javier for all his work and Noel for the interview!

Javier owner of XTR is the man ! The XTR foam he makes is so overlooked by most. It floats way more bouyant ( sometimes a bad thing) but it means you can ride a smaller thinner board. And get slingshot like flex of the bottom.. This was Tomos go to foam when trying out his prototypes. He was basically living at XTR. XTR 10 has to be really good !

Noel, I'm stoked at the new adaptations and content you've got...I say Waco has lit a fire in you and the show. I had a bad experience with communication and sizing with XTR years ago but Javier's breakdown (and explaining the tiny vent holes I always wondered about) along with your stoke has me steering this direction for next board. Do you have a personal recommendation on XTR setups for boards in good waves (I'd usually go stringered eps) versus more grovelly waves (typically carbon/eps for me)? As in a breakdown on where to draw the line between xtr w/ stringer, xtr w/single centered carbon, and xtr w/ parallel carbon? Keep up the fantastic work young man, and thank you!

Good question, basically its about controling the flex with a stringer you have a flex that cant be measure exactly since its a natural product and varies. with parallel carbon or center carbon and xtr we can get a very specific flex for you and any wave size. I personally test same board with stringer and parallel carbon in Hawaii and by far I made and catch more waves without stringer.

As for vents ? I had many of the XTR 7s and I never seen any vent holes and do not think those did. This type of foam is not eps. It's real closed cell foam similar to XPS Extruded polystyrene an will not take in water. Javier has a video ( Or did ) that shows him surfing just a blank . No glass job ! I believe they figured out away around the vent holes.

I can't attest to the durability of these blanks, but what I noticed in this clip is how much POP you seem to have on them. Maybe it's just because you're in trunks in a wave pool, but your surfing looks noticeably crisper and livlier.
I've been a pretty dedicated Tomo/Firewire guy the last 5 years or so, and I can't believe the durability and pop of the LFT. The board will yellow, but I've ridden boards nearly every day for 2 years with hardly ANY pressure dents. Love to hear how you compare the two. I just picked up my first "Ibolic" Firewire, and that's supposed to be even more durable. If they get any more durable, my quiver will be set for life unless I gain weight or something, haha.

@@tezf6883 I ride a Sci-Fi 2.0 in most waves, a El Tomo Fish in small/marginal waves, and an FRK roundtail in hollower waves. The Sci-Fi and El Tomo have been two of the most magic boards I've ever owned. The FRK does what it should, as I only really ride it in barrels. That's the one I have in Ibolic, but haven't ridden it yet. Saving it for winter.

I’ve got the Pyzalien 2 in XTR 8.C but I bought it second hand and the top glassing is pretty light. I have more pressure dings on that board than any of my fire wire or my JS. Monsta box for that matter. My Sci-fi held up really good but got these weird red streaks in the glass after 1 year. I just ordered a Revo Ibolic which as you said is supposed to be incredibly strong. I do like the pop in the XTR and I haven’t seen any delaminating after 2 years of use. Most pressure dings are in the knee area from popping up. I love that they don’t absorb water. I did notice what I thought were some factory flaws in the glassing which after watching this video I think are off gassing ports. Thin areas in the glass where you can see the fibers. I also own a dark arts Pyzalien 2 in larger dims. Personally I like the feel of that board over the XTR but the XTR is light and poppy and I wouldn’t hesitate ordering again with slightly heavier glass on the top deck. Sounds like this newest version XTR 10 is even stronger.

I agree with Kristim4549 on this one. I’ve had XTRs since the 5.0 and 5.C days, back in the early 2000s….the most recent being a parallel carbon Tomo about 2/3 years ago. Really well made and finished boards but I’ve always found with the foam being so dense that it doesn’t give the best flex. No matter what carbon layups are used the foam density doesn’t allow for much movement/flex. I was tempted to go with no stringer or carbon to see if that made a difference but went parallel carbon instead. I am definitely curious how the XTR 10 feels as they are very well made boards.

Yep, have been thinking about this too, would be interesting. Appletree seem to avoid the vents by increasing the laminat-foam-bond using vacuum infusion. They started as a kiteboard and surfboard brand where xps makes total sense, but from a certain volume upwards like for wing or downwind foil boards, xps comes with a bit of a weight penalty and you'd be better off doing eps with a full sandwich construction, which is lighter, stiffer and stronger. Windsurfing brands have been doing that for decades. Firewire's doing sandwich but you loose the ability to customise.

Does this new version of XTR really not chatter when the wave has texture on windy days? The tendency to chatter is the only thing stopping me from going Epoxy. I'm seriously considering getting the Phantom in XTR 10. If it rides like a PU but just lighter, more buoyant, and more durable then it sounds like a win win. Or is PU still the better option for those bigger gnarlier days?

@@xisotopex Really? I don't surf "big" waves at all, but I notice my epoxy boards feel different than my PU boards. They feel "higher" on the water and feel like they get bounced around a little more. That's what I understand as 'chatter'. PU cuts through those conditions better. And my Lib Tech cuts through better than any of them.
It's not like it's a deal breaker though. My 2 go to boards are both epoxy, but there is a difference to me.

Great question, chatter comes when the ooutside core like fiberglass and the inside core have different flex, in that case the board vibrates and dosent adapt to the wave surface. I personally have favorite boards for Sunset and Todos with Parallel carbon, the boards are faster and easy to control. It also can be glass with center carbon. THE BOARD NEED TO BE STIFF NOT HEAVY. Stringers are inconsistent and not nessesary on XTR

surfboard industry is like 50 years behind the composite development. stuck at 4-4 while there is thousands types of fabrics. where is dyneema, inegra, aramid and stuff like that ? javier is doing a good job if you compare to other, but when he talks like enhancing torsion by parael carbon, tou can see how little he undersands some basics. and you can only compare foams like this if they are exactly the same density which I doubt. gosh, still long journey ahead to get a proper board. think about oh I rode my car for first 8 hours and it has just a little presure dents, what an amazing car :))

Strange post. Javi is doing a good job compared to others… Then you vomit on the rest of the episode.
How about this… buying a PU/Poly with a light glass job is such a waste of money. They last me 2-3 weeks max and the deck is destroyed. I say pressure dents in this episode… maybe I should call them huge foot wells as I completely smash the deck to shreds. I cannot even sell the board because the deck is hammered in 2 weeks. What a waste of $800.
Maybe your a light footed surfer like some of my friends and pressure dents or foot wells aren’t a thing for you.
I’ve tested so many boards and constructions in the last eight years of doing this show and XTR 10 is legit in flex and durability. The best I’ve ridden to date. Just that simple…
Maybe the surfing industry is way behind in technology but I struggle with all the negative comments from folks that bitch about things that need improvement like surfboard foam.
If Javi doesn’t understand much about foam and torsion flex then the rest of the surf industry… including myself are hopeless. Let’s just give up on innovation.

my point was that any pressure dents and wells shouldnt be acceptable at any product. we are living in 21.century where the current technology enables building boards that arent denting, nor colapsing, can go on rocks without significant damage , have extreme response and still be lighter than standart pupe if you like. and they can last basicaly forever with a minor touch up here and there. torsional stiffness is only enhanced by diagonal reinforcements like carbon tape X shape cross or better thin layers of uni carbon at +and- 45degree.

We can add more advance fabrics and do real tests with specs, the issue here is costs and some surfers will not understand the results, and surf shops cant explain the benefits, every attempt in the past have their books turn red, Salomon, Hydroflex, Aviso, etc. Yes theres room for improvement, Poly board is so easy and affordable that anybody can built in a garage.

@@surfnshowreviews7777 That's true, they are a bit heavier than a PU, but apparently the newer ones are lighter than they used to be. I think they'd make the best travel boards...lol.

First off. The people at XTR are great. However...
I took very good care of my XTR 10 board. It delaminated pretty bad from a small pressure ding on the rail; they have a one year warranty so they paid for the repair, which is cool. A couple months later and the board started delaminating on the bottom deck, no idea why. I don't leave it in my car or subject it to heat, or anything that they say not to do. It just started to delaminate for no apparent reason. The warranty is one year. Due to an injury, I didn't start surfing the board until a few months after I got it. It's no longer under warranty, I'm a couple weeks past. Not sure what to do. Very sad that my board lasted less than a year.

No, it's not! Unless you're surfing at the north pole the board will eventually be in the hot car or on the beach and will delaminate. Just got 2 xtr10 surfboards last year and one of them is already a mattress in the foot placement areas. You basically trade some pressure dents for delamination which renders the board unusable in a few months.

There's more to a surfboard then the density of the foam. A comprehensive test should mimic a real world situation i.e. you travel with multiple boards in the car and you leave it in the car then surf it the next day. I guarantee you that all the 6 boards will delaminate within a few months. I think you're doing a great disservice to the community by not going through the cons of this construction too...This construction is very heat sensitive and prone to delam, most people will prefer dents over delam.
