I've had many dogs. Rarely have I been without one. When they pass on I shed tears for them, or, perhaps, those tears are for me. When my time comes, I know they all will be there waiting for me.
I had an Aussie that I raised from a pup working dairy cattle. She was with me all the time. I had to have her put to sleep when she was almost 16. It broke my heart. She was with me through my low times and my high times. She hung around long enough to see me cured from Leukemia. The lord put that old girl in my life at just the right time and I thank him for that. RIP Dixie Belle.
That was so sweet. My Aussie--now 14--looks just like Baxter's did...and he's as good a dog as it's possible to be. I'm appreciating while he's here; and, like Baxter, I'll appreciate him when he's gone.
Baxter, you are a man's man. Anybody who is that feeling towards his dog is a good man. I have had a few dogs in my life which I miss dearly. Anyone who says dogs don't have emotional feelings or can't feel love is missing a major part of life. God bless you Baxter.
What a Great Tribute to Man's Best Friend. As many others have said,"if you don't believe dogs have feelings and emotions have a large piece of their Heart missing". I've had many dogs over the years and have several now, and I Love everyone of them. They meet you at the door all excited, no matter how long you've been gone. They look at you with those deep warm eyes and your Heart just melts. Dogs are a Gift from God I'm sure of that. And there's nobody around who can tell it like Baxter.
Thank you Baxter. I tear up every time I watch this video. I wish I could post a picture of my little buddy on this comment. My little Scamp was the best dog I ever had. He was family; well they all are really. More human than dog somehow. He was all of 14 pounds but ruled all the dogs, even the big ole 70 pounders... He followed me everywhere. He wanted nothing more than to be in my presence. I'd imagine that's what God wants out of us.
Thanks for sharing your fine words and letting everyone know how you feel about your best companion. My emotions run as deep as my love for my own pets. Peace
We lost our "Scout" last summer after fourteen years. First one we had to put down and we thought maybe we were gonna swear off the four legged family members. Now after spending a year tending to my wife's mother and saying goodbye when alzheimers took Her, My wife and I brought home "Maggie". I don't know where in the heart dogs reside but that is their place and their place only.
I lost my dog Pepper of 15 years, one of the hardest things I have gone through, I listen to this every now and again, close my eyes and remember him chasing and herding, the things he lived for. Thank you, Baxter, for putting it into perspective.
Had dog named Pepper when I was growing up, she went to the barn with Dad every morning to do the milking, she kept the cows from standing in the doorway. Dont know who missed her more, me or Dad.
We had to put down my 3 year old Airedale, Autumn a week ago on Sunday. She had renal carcinoma. It was time for her but the hole in my heart is huge. She was my best friend and the best dog I have ever had. This is a beautiful poem, thank you so much Baxter. It brings on another stream of tears, they just seem to keep coming back.
I had to put my beagle down this week, my heart is broken. He might have been just a dog, but he was our dog, our sweet little puppy and we loved him so much. He will be missed!
Here I sit in tears, having had a few of those "just a dogs" that managed to worm their way right into my heart. I will be forever grateful to have shared time and space with my furry friends. Thank you for sharing about your friend. God bless.....
"just a dog"...nope. Not the ones that are special to us....far more than just a dog, they're family members that leaven us. RIP to all the pups out there that have passed on, rest easy all.
Well, dangit. Now I'm in tears all over again missing my own Aussie, Shasta. She brought us much joy and a little consternation, and left us too soon. For weeks after her passing, we could hear her in the house - flopping down on the wooden floor and sighing, the jingle of her tags, her nails clipping across the kitchen floor. It was sweet of her to comfort us that way for awhile.
You said it far better than I could. I was blessed with a great dog for 15 years, and just lost him last week. Your poem fits him well. He taught me so much.
I have been following you for more than 20 years, your writings got me thru veterinary school with a smile on my face, or a different perspective I had not seen before. Proud to count you among my colleagues. Very touching tribute.
Thank you. We lost 2 this year one in February and yesterday. They were the same age. Our male lost his eyesight and couldn't walk on his own anymore. Heartbreaking to watch them suffer. God Bless our Furbabies
this isn't the first time I've listened to this, it touches my heart - the part that belongs to animals. The tears are for all the creatures large and small that I've been lucky enough to know in my life.
Baxter, thank you for putting into words what many of us feel but don't know how to say properly. I'm sure more than a few tears have been shed at the viewing of this video...
Oh Baxter, I cried. Your sweet dog looks like our Gracie, the finest Aussie we've ever known. She'll be 15 in October, God willing. I am bracing myself.
This is such a great tribute. Every time I see it, I think of my good furry friends that have passed and I am thankful for the ones that lay at my feet and never leave my side all day.
Our dog just passed away today a few hours ago and this made me cry so hard we had him since i was 4 and im 18 now and i just dont know what to do now that hes gone he was such a good farm dog wanting to ride on the tractors and equipment and now that hes gone i dont know what to do
My dog Gracie came to me, because I became a recluse. I stopped trusting people and lived my life alone. The way she came to me really is an amazing story, but the important part of my story is because of our walks at the park and neighborhood, we began to make friends and now we have many people and dogs that we can call friends. Thanks Gracie, there hasn't been a pill invented that could have done what you have.
I had a dream once about my dog. He had been dead a few weeks. I dreamed that he talked to me like a person. It wasn't weird though or funny though. He didnt move his mouth or anything, it was like he came to me in a dream like they god did to prophets. He talked like how I imagine he would if he could. He told me how he just got old and he was hurting and his time had come. He talked about how he loved the family and he talked about times we had. It eased the hurt I felt . My one and only dog.
We adopted a dachshund 3 years ago when he was 7 years old. He was too old too use for breeding anymore and needed a loving home. He is the best dog ever! He barks at strangers and protects whoever he is sitting with. He is losing his teeth and cant 'hold it' all night anymore. He is our first dog. I own cats but a dog is so different. A dog is so happy to see you,so happy for a walk or a belly rub. Peanut is his name and he is getting old. But we love him: barking and all because he loves us.
Thanks Baxter, I've had a few good friends like yours, RIP Katy, Bell & Cassie, you three made this cowboy's job a lot easier, and a heck of a lot funnier!
What a touching tribute for your friend...I to have a 15 yr old friend who's facing his final challenges...I know I will miss him. But regardless he will be with me always.....as your dog is with you.....in your heart
My boy sat in the front seat of the pick up and when I looked over at him he would reach over with his leg and put his left paw on my shoulder. I tell people that if I knew for certain I would be with him I would go right now.
My Sister is a Pastor and we have talked about whether dogs and cats have a 'soul', the conclusion we came to is yes, they do. Correct me if I'm wrong when you watch your four legged furry family member sleeping, do you notice how they try to run? They must be dreaming, maybe it's chasing a cat or something. If they dream, they've got a soul, if they have a soul, they go to heaven. This is just my opinion I'm sharing with you. Think about it.
may my beautiful dog harley rest in peace. i miss you my girl, i wish you never had to go. you were a great friend to me, and always protected me. hope there's plenty of room for you to play in heaven
This is a great video short. My sister inlaw lost her dog a few weeks ago so I sent this video to her to let her know that there are other people who loved their dogs and they know how she feels. I have never met Baxter although my father is related to his wife Cindy Lou Black.
Over a 31 year period my wife and I have had to put down 6 dogs. Many tears were shed. It is such a shame that dogs don't live as long as us. There would not be a life without a dog to bring joy into our lives. They love us through thick and thin and our lives are better off for the relatively brief period of time that we are allowed to share with them.
After losing my "best friend" a few years ago, I tried to figure out if dogs go to heaven. I have come to this conclusion "If dogs don't go to heaven, then there is no such thing as heaven."
Much, much greater minds than mine have grappled with this one. According to my pastor, Martin Luther once was trying to console a little boy whose dog had died. The boy asked, "Pastor Luther, will there be dogs in Heaven?" Luther's reply was Divinely inspired: "Yes, if that's what it takes to make you happy there."
Oh there is a heaven... the good book tells us so. Not all people go there but all dogs do. Animals don't have original sin so they go straight to heaven to the Lord who made them. Not all of us will make it there...but I want to go meet my Corey and Muffins again.
A good dog is a farmer's right hand, partner, and best friend. I lost my Bonnie last May. I never had to worry when we went out to get chores done together, because she always had my back. And she saved it more than once, too.
I’m lucky, I’ve always had smart and loyal dogs and the love of animals is one thing my kids did inherit from me that was worth having. I remember each and ever one fondly just like any other family member.
Boller was my dog before he was Baxter's. When I had him his name was "Mike." There is a story behind how Baxter ended up with him. It's obvious that it was all meant to be.
I second that! I love my Dog She is by my side every moment she can loves me know matter how grumpy i can be! loves to go for drives and walks just an over all best Freand!
Putting my dog down was my best, yet hardest choice I've had to make. I wanted to help her live longer, but I knew it would have been cruel. She knew it was her time to go,and I gave her her wish. she lived a long happy life.
Awesome video. Cried for my Blue but you had a special cattle dog too and I am very sorry for your loss. I found a huge hard cancer lump on Blue's abdomen and the vet did not want to operate because his congestive heart failure was so bad he would not have survived the surgery. They are our family not just a dog.

Hearing of Mr Black's passing today
This will always be one of my favorites ❤ 🐾🐾

Baxter was a veterinarian before he became a poet. Loved listening to him. RIP

I lost my boy today. There has to be dogs in heaven. He had a more pure heart than I could ever have. Thank you Baxter.
I half think dogs have their own heaven to which no human is worthy of entering. 🐾❤️
That sure hits close to home! Many times, many wonderful dogs, many heartaches when they pass on, but soothed with the wonderful memories!
This is as good as it gets. As a songwriter I am deeply touched. A man revealing his heart is a delicate endeavor. Well done sir.
A tear jerker for the ones with a heart. For those who "thumbs down" this...ISIS is still recruiting.
I just had my 11 yr old red heeler put down today. i cried every time i listened to this before. I love and miss you Tessie.
Thank you Baxter. I tear up every time I watch this video. I wish I could post a picture of my little buddy on this comment. My little Scamp was the best dog I ever had. That was right on target. I miss my Santana every day. And why haven't I heard of you before, Mr. Baxter Black? You have a way with words.
A friend sent me this link today. I had to put my little chorkie, Briggs, down Monday. God, it's hard. He was all I had left of my husband :(

When you get a moment, look up Romans 8:18-21. In the Amplified version, it's the loudest. (No pun intended.)

Thanks for sharing this, real good.

Sorry for your families loss. "just a dog" translates to me, "part of the family"... sad days.
Prose that’s poetic. I share this video with everyone I know who loses their dog. It helps!
A good dog is a farmer's right hand, partner, and best friend. I lost my Bonnie last May. I never had to worry when we went out to get chores done together, because she always had my back. And she saved it more than once, too.
Thanks for this, I will be putting my Lab Noah down next week There is nothing like the love of a dog.

Awesome video. Cried for my Blue but you had a special cattle dog too and I am very sorry for your loss. Miss my babies, Neckbone and Homefry. Putting them down was like putting down one of my own children.....
You are an angel!

Many a day was lost to the minutia as Baxter suggest. Too busy to even notice my loyal and faithful friend, but she was always there.
