- At 68 years old, and after about 100 films and 16 seasons on "The View," Whoopi Goldberg thinks there's still part of her you do not know. She's penned a memoir, "Bits and Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, and Me," which she calls a "thank you" to her late mother, Emma, and late brother, Clyde. Goldberg talks with correspondent Seth Doane about her remarkable path, from a housing project in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, to a retreat overlooking a peninsula on the island of Sardinia.

Should have won the Oscar for The Color Purple!
Definitely should not have! I remember Trip to Bountiful! I don’t remember anything about Color Purple
@@misskitty1666 sorry kitty I do and feel she should had received that Oscar. You have your opinion I have mine. You have a great evening.
Totally agree, unfortunately that movie was snubbed from all categories. I felt her performance in the Color Purple was stronger than Ghost.
@@misskitty1666 Just because you don’t remember anything about The Color Purple doesn’t mean Whoopi didn’t deserve the Oscar. I remember Geraldine Page’s performance in the Trip to Bountiful & Whoopi’s in The Color Purple and both were amazing, but I believe Whoopi deserved the statue. But you’re entitled to your opinion despite what I or anyone else thinks and you should be able to share it on the internet without being told it’s not valid by some stranger who doesn’t remember the Trip to Bountiful as you just did in your comment about The Color Purple. It’s not hard- just be nice.
@@misskitty1666perhaps you felt it was a black movie and that’s what turned you off? Yes, it was an entire black cast about black women, but it was a wonderfully written story made into a fantastic movie. Watch it tonight, I’d love to hear what you think about it now that you know it exists
from the Chelsea projects to her own Peninsula in Sardinia. Girl you did GOOD!
She should have won an Oscar for the Color Purple also.
💯%
And she should have been in Oprah Movie to
That part!!
Hollywood was too upset with Steven Spielberg to give anyone on the cast any awards. He helped inspire a black movie, and Hollywood wasn't having it.
@@vt-yp7yqit didn’t have anything to do with Spielberg. At the time, black people weren’t winning Oscars except for every 20 years. And they certainly weren’t winning lead actor Oscars except for Sidney Poitier. In the 90 years of Oscars, only one black woman has won a lead award. It’s all racism.
Watching "The Color Purple" I could never absorb the tag line of Ceily being "ugly." When "Ms. Goldberg" smiles, to me it's like a beacon of affirmative light that commands the witness to smile back. I have enjoyed her creative performatives from a stand-up comedian to a hard working cop, resistant medium, singer witness hiding in a convent, host of the Oscars Award Show and clear speaking cohost of "The View." She has provided much to celebrate and will provide more to celebrate because God is in the habit of letting His light shine through His children. I am so very PROUD of Ms. Johnson/Goldberg and feel blessed that she shares!
I HATE that line. Wish it had never been added. Even though it is fiction, I couldn't get with Shug even after she made up with Celie.
She’s long overdue for her Kennedy center honors for her unparalleled contributions to comedy and entertainment for decades. She’s an EGOT winner btw
I Love Whoopi because she’s so DAMN REAL!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sure did!
A real fool.
She is so relatable. Whenever she speaks, I listen wholeheartedly. She speaks to us - that's for sure, no matter where you're from or who you are. She's real.
@@LisaLisa-2023 Yesssss!
What? Goldberg isn't even her real name.
Ghost will forever be a classic and Whoopi will forever be a legend no matter of our political differences.
You know what? You're absolutely right. I sometimes watch her on 'The View' and want to scream at her... and the rest there, of course. But aside from our political differences- I just saw 'Ghost' for the first time ever and she was absolutely wonderful in it. Now I'm going to watch Sister Act, haha.
Congratulations, Ms. Whoopi, you deserve it all. I hope your book becomes a best seller.
Everyone needs a quiet place to gather our thoughts.
Yes! The world is just too busy.
Lol, a private water view on the coast of Itay does help
@@QuangNguyen-ng5zh It's on the Autonomous Region of Sardinia
Whoopi really should have a Kennedy Center Honor!
and a lifetime achievement
Most Definitely.
She reminds me of a smart and witty auntie. Love her work 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾
I feel the same way.
Listening to the book read by Whoopi.
Love It!
I have always loved Whoopie. Her and I are about the same age. She says things I wish I could.
And she would tell you…you totally can say them too!
My great-mother, grandmother, aunt(my mother's sister), my mother.
They all taught me to speak my truth and never let other people tell me what I can do and what I can't do. In other words, I am very direct and people don't like it. Because they think I am being rude. It's important to always speak your mind and share your beliefs. Don't let anyone stifle your voice or make you feel like your opinions don't matter. Remember, your unique perspective is valuable and can help shape the world around you. So, go ahead and express yourself confidently and fearlessly. Your thoughts and beliefs are important, and they deserve to be heard.
I have so much respect for this beautiful intelligent woman. I love her and admire her realness. ❤😊
I have always loved myself some Whoopi. Jumping Jack Flash was one of my favorite movies has a kid. Still think she should have won an Oscar for "The Color Purple" 💜. What a Stellar Human Being. 🙏🏽💫 👑
💯%. Pitch perfect performance, classic.❤
Whoopi Goldberg was the star in a small performance art scene in San Diego in 1981. I was in a small up and coming performance art group. I saw a number of her shows. I worked as a waitress in a music club to pay the rent so I got home by 3 am. A couple of times a week I’d shuffle around the corner to a small diner for breakfast and Karen Johnson was in there having her breakfast. Cause I’m from SF, I learned to give space to entertainers eating, so I never said too much more than good morning (yea, it was usually around noon ). In San Diego we got to see her work on a show that she moved to Berkeley to flesh out and polish and suddenly she was famous. She was so talented we all knew she’d be a star!
Fell in love with Whoopi in 1985 watching her one woman show on HBO. Almost 40 years later I feel exactly the same.
And, as with Robin Williams, makes me laugh no matter how ,any times I watch it!😂🤣😂🤣❤️
This was one memorable show. Brilliant.
Me too. My son and I exchange quotes from that performance often.
@@mskimlouise My mother and I do the same 😊
Should have mentioned "Comic Relief" with icons Billy Crystal & Robin Williams to assist the homeless
Yes! And also her role on Star Trek: TNG
I've always been a fan. Love you, Whoopi!!!
I actually think Whoopi is one of those rare humans who become more beautiful as they age. I’ve never seen her more beautiful! Maybe it’s the peace that comes with settling into who you are… whatever it is it’s working!!! Every time I see her I smile. What a blessing she’s given all of us. Thank you Whoopi for sharing your blessing with the world. 🙏🏼#always a fan
Totally agree! 🙌🙌🙌
Me too. Absolutely Beautiful and her skin has always been Flawless! 😍
Love Ms. Whoopi Goldberg!!! One of the greatest........................❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Great story🎉Thanks🎉
Those eyes! I'll never forget her color purple performance
I love Italy and I love Whoopie ! ❤❤
Loved the interview. Whoopi, is an amazing actress! Knowledgeable, on a lot of subjects!
The cnn interview with Anderson cooper was an awesome interview ❤!
She can't even say what she really thinks. What a world we live in.
Sour sour sour… oh the green monster!
Find something you are passionate about, you will okay. Drink water too
❤❤❤`Our International Treasure !
Miss Whoopi Goldberg !
Yes!
I once saw Whoopie in a movie where she was the only character, a woman alone who was being terrorized by someone over the phone. She was phenomenal! Her mother comes across as a really smart woman. So glad for Whoopi that she had that. I say, "Just park it out on that peninsula, Girl, and soak it up for as long as you can!" (I wouldn't even care about the house - just a seat on that patio would work for me! And, well...maybe a LITTLE white wine, lol!)😊😊😊
The movie you're referring to is _The Telephone_ (1988), where Whoopi Goldberg plays a character named Vashti Blue. In the film, she's essentially the sole character, with the story revolving around her character's interactions via telephone.
I totally agree, she should have won an Oscar for the Color Purple. I met had once and she was wonderful. May all your projects be successful. Love you Whoopi 💜💜💜
I love seeing these pictures of young Whoopi ❤
Why did this interviewer ask her if she "regretted" her Holocaust comment? Why? That was dealt with. She had to apologize for it; she was dismissed for two weeks. It caused problems for her. I personally understood what she was trying to say the first time, but I can see how it might have been misinterpreted. But to bring it up again was a stupid, pointless thing for this man to do, and I felt Whoopi handled it beautifully. I really feel that interviewers try really hard to trip up their subjects to get them to do or say something outrageous, shocking or deeply revealing, or, better yet (for the interviewers and their audiences) reduce the subject to tears. Whoopi dealt with this, and CBS Sunday Morning should apologize to her for having had to have that question flung in her face.
I LOVE THIS KINDA PEACE AND SERENITY
We grew up in the same building, and attended the same grammar school. I am older by 4 years, and do not have a home on a Sardinia peninsula.
Always amazed at what is decided to leave in and out in a piece on a celebrity. No mention of the work she did with Robin Williams and Billy Crystal.
This was 8 minutes…and the book is about her mom and brother. I understand that she has other books and no doubt there are other interviews that get into her friendships with Robin and Billy and others…my guess is that the clip is from a longer piece because who sends a reporter to Italy for an eight minute interview?
good on her!!! love to see women happy and enjoying life.
I’ve been a fan of this lady since she was a nun, in the Sister Act movies, and when she was the “center square”, on my favorite game show, Hollywood Squares, with Tom Bergeron.
I miss that show.
She is amazing! I would love to have a conversation with her!
Congratulations 🎉
She's brilliant
It took me three tries but … "I've had many" is what Whoopi whispered. Thanks, Whoopi 5:18
Inspirational interview
Since the night of the Oscars she was nominated for The Color Purple, I've been "miffed" she didn't win. The entire cast should have been given an Oscar. Even the ham at the Easter table deserved an Oscar! How Spielberg found all these extraordinary actors amazes me. And I am jealous of Whoopie's favorite place. Though my roots are on the mainland of Italy, my father's side is straight across the water close to Rome. My mother's side is in the region of Liguria. They are not too far from Porto Fino. I've never been there but I wish I could see my cugini (cousins). I can't blame Whoopie for loving it there. It's serene and beautiful.
She an amazing person, life hero and great actress. She made mistakes and she learns by mistakes, who doesn't. Don't be jealous ❤
Love seeing African Americans being great....they have been though a lot in America...
*Whoopi Goldberg should have won the Oscar for BEST ACTRESS in 1985 for "The Color Purple".* The academy "gave" Whoopi the Oscar in 1990 for "ghost" yet that was not a "stand out performance" it was a piece of shlok bubble gum.
Poor Robin Williams used to refer to "Doubtfire" as "doubtfluff". These talented actors take the work they can get, usually to fulfill a multi-picture deal.
But there are standout roles. Just a few days ago we rewatched my DVD of "Boys on the Side". This woman has innate talent, and I thank her for all that she has given us!
👏 👏 👏 👏 🏆
Her performance in Purple and the movie itself, was much more outstanding than Ghost. Purple was robbed of many awards, including Oprah’s
Love and respect for Whoopi Goldberg.
I have always loved her. Brilliant woman.
Ms. Whoopi, Thank you for always being True with your authenticity and compassion for others. I love your work, honesty and your style. God's Continued Blessings Bestowed Upon You and Your Beautiful Family. His Humbled Servant,
I so admire and love this woman.
Whoopi IS JUST AWESOME‼️🦂💖💛
Love you Whoopi♥️ I’m going to get that book for my mom for Mothers Day.
I got to meet her at a book signing Whoopies big book of Manners. So glad U got to meet her!
Did he say Paulahost comment?
Whoopie commands The View. It never reaches the point of descending into chaos with her in the corner. It is unbridled without her presence. We have some things in common, this thrice married woman. Even if the husbands had been honorable, marriage is not for me and I am happy as a single woman who makes her own choices and accepts the consequences without scorn or regret. I have always been a fan and consider her a role model for self-actualization.
The view never descends into chaos??
Love me some Whoopi!!!!! 💖✨
Money buys beauty, quiet and a gorgeous view.
I wish I had that ocean view.
You don't have to worry about people spying at your window
Sardinia looks so amazing
It is. The Northeastern shores (Olbia, etc.) have white, sandy beaches while the beaches around Cagliari are rocky. Same with the Côte d'Azur. Nice has rocky shores and gorgeously blue water while Antibes & Cannes have white, sandy beaches but the water isn't as stunning in color. In Greece, Mykonos has white sandy beaches while Santorini has rocky beaches. Basically, the rocky beaches have stronger currents while the white sandy beaches are calmer and easier to swim in.
Great artist, beautiful actress. Can't stand the View, I don't know why she wastes her essence with that garbage, but I guess we all need "outlets" to 'speak out' on the state of the world. But Whoopi CONTINUES to be at her best when she's an artist, acting in AUTHENTIC productions, like Star Trek and Ghost. God Bless Ms. Goldberg, and perhaps "loneliness" isn't so lonely after all, when you love yourself FIRST.
Kindred soul of mine. Love you, Whoop!
Love, love, love her ❤️
Whoopi as Celie in the Color Purple 💜 is one of the best performances of the 20th century
patrick swayze is actually a little bit cute
QUE BELLA ANA !! TE AMO !!💝🌹
no mention of Ted Danson
You mean the tiny blip of time she dated him? He's insignificant to this interview.
Or how she defended him wearing blackface.
@@TaharkahX she's the one who encouraged him to wear black face that could have ended his career.
We love some whoopi ❤
For me growing up and until forever, Whoopi Goldberg and Eddy Murphy are the funniest man and woman on the planet and I thank them for the laughs over 37 years of life so far.
Love you, Whoopi Goldberg and may god keep blessing you ❤❤
Whoopi Goldberg ❤❤❤❤😍
Love it
Her mom and her are twins!!!❤ love her❤
I’ve been to Italy as a black woman and it’s so beautiful I see why she has a home there and the people there are very nice and theirs also a lot of black people there as well
She's a living legend and yet she let's people like Sunny Hostin talk down to her on The View. Whoopi, you don't need that dumb show, go live however you want and let the bottom feeders keep keep feeding without you.
My love for Whoopi just got deeper. She is a treasure.
🙏🏾🙏🏾❤️❤️❤️
Whoopie is as real as it gets and I love her for that ❤
I loved Whoopi in sister act
I have been in LOVE with her ever since I saw her doing her stand up. She is one of the most beautiful person that I have ever seen in my life. 😊😊 YOU HAVE THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SMILE AND A GREAT PERSONALITY YOU ARE SOOOOO HONEST. THAT IS VERY RARE. LOVE YOU GG-MA ❤️ KEEP DOING WHAT ARE DOING.
Thank you for being you love you
her comments were fine.
Love that for you, Whoopi .. take your bow, your time and your rest. You are so deserving. Thank you for all you have done for so many of us.❤
Love her ❤
Well I still say your beautiful person inside and out 😊
I sparkle brighter when it's just me too. I wish her every happiness.✨
She's smart, funny and talented, she's one of those gifts that keep on giving.
Loved Ghost. Love Whoopi Goldberg.
An interesting choice for a residence: Over 1,500,000 acres of Sardinia is environmentally preserved (about 25% of the island's territory). The island has three national parks.
I love Whoopi Goldberg. She's a great actress and she never allowed anyone to change her. She's such an inspiration.
She is a great actress. Wish she'd do more movies vs her talk show
Wow, I want a home like that when I retire. Always loved Whoopi!
Whoopi looks so pretty ❤❤❤❤
I think she has a vulnerability and humbleness to her and that's probably due to her upbringing with her single Mom in the projects....Good for her, she has done well, and she still seems to be not totally, affected by her wealth and fame....I, too, tried very hard in the my early years to have relationships with men, and dreamed of getting married, but I was in the end, too independent, and I feel so much better on my own now, not feeling like if I don't have a man, I'm doing something wrong. It has been hugely liberating to be on my own, and such a great teacher to me....
A fan of your acting. I'm not into The View and that type of television.
Congrats on your success.
A fantastic actress and fantastic lady...Lobe Whoopi...🥰
An icon and artist and thought leader. Love
it’s very obvious that Whoopi's comment on the view was very accurate. Religious is not a race.
Till this day I love this movie
Talk That
The world wasn’t the same before her, it won’t be the same after. ✨💜✨
I could have sworn for years it was reported that she got Goldberg as a stage name from her manager. This is the first time I’ve ever heard of it being a last name from a long lost relative. Sounds like something you find out on that roots pbs special…
You are the best Karen Johnson
I use to see you in Chelsea Project at 288 tenth avenue and I was in 450 just a cross from you .
How is your granddaughter she was so good on the show of course I forgot the name of the show
