The island has appeared in a number of recent feature films. External shots of the island were used in the 2012 James Bond film Skyfall. The 2015 live-action Japanese films based on the manga Attack on Titan used the island for filming multiple scenes, and 2013 Thai horror film Hashima Project was filmed here. The 2017 South Korean World War II film The Battleship Island fictitiously depicts an attempt by Korean forced laborers to escape the labor camp on the island.

@26:55 "...this guys seems to be very popular. i don't know where he came from ..."
that is *Sakamoto Ryōma* . he was also in your previous video in this series (the *"Dragon Horse"* statue guy at the top of the cemetery hike).
long story very short, he was a samurai that was part of a small group who helped overthrow the old *Shogunate* system (military dictatorships that answered to the Emperor, but in reality did whatever they wanted in their local regions of control). he was eventually assassinated, but his group helped unify & establish modern *Japan* .
he was born (& died) in Kyoto, so i didn't get his connection to Nagasaki until i looked it up.
apparently he set up a navy there, so i guess that's why there's so many commemorative things dedicated to him in the city.
the lady on the same vending machine is his wife *Narasaki Ryō* (aka *Oryō* ) who saved him from assassination at least once. not only that, their constant trips to hot springs (both to heal Sakamoto from injuries during assassination attempts & to hide from assassins) is rumored to be the start of the tradition of going on a "honeymoon" in *Japan* .

Here's a little story for you. My dad was watching a programme about what the world would be like after humans. So it cuts to 35 years later and about how there is an island in our time that highlights what it would be like. Nooo! I was hoping I could live vicariously through you for battleship island. Did they tell you that you couldn't dock before you bought the ticket? A few years ago I went from Tokyo to Nagasaki by train specifically to see the island. The boat went right up to the island then turned around. They claimed it was because of weather, which maybe it was, but I am sure they would have known that well before boarding. I felt scammed... and now seeing your experience I'm wondering if anyone gets to walk on the island anymore.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  5 лет назад +3

My understanding is the weather around island is hard to predict. We were told when we booked the tickets they wouldn't be able to dock as the dock was busted up from a storm for a couple months at that point. It's not in the nature of people here to scam customers, really, I would take them at their word there was some reason stopping them. -E

@Kyde and Eric After watching the scene with The Restaurant of (more than) a Thousand Choices, and your curry rice I was wondering if you could clarify something for me. When I visited Japan a couple years back I acquired a taste for Japanese Curry Rice after having it for breakfast almost every morning because I couldn't wrap my head (or fork or chopsticks) around the half cooked (to Americans anyway) scrambled eggs and bacon the hotel was serving. This was a reddish curry, sweet but generally not hot and mainly with potatoes, carrots and onions. It's something i make myself now from time to time using the little Curry Roux packages i can find in local Asian markets. Over this series and others I've seen you guys get different "curry" dishes. I was wondering if the dishes you have experienced (specifically the spicy curry rice) fall under a similar subset of curry, or if different areas of Japan lean more towards Indian curry.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  5 лет назад +1

It's not typically influenced by region in Japan, there is just a somewhat wide spread of different types of curry rice out there. It's all somewhat Indian influenced, but has become it's own thing.

    11:36 Dutch plates? Lekker=Tasty
Holland = 2 provinces (of 12) that were responsible for the rise of the Dutch Empire in the 17th century.
(Even today if you hear about Holland or The Netherlands...it will almost always be in one of the 2 called "Holland" provinces (Northern Holland/Sourthern Holland).
The kingdom of the Netherlands is everything (incl. islands that are part of Holland but lay in the caribbean like Curacao and Aruba or half of St Martin... so Holland shares a border with France but on the other side of the globe...lol).
Dutch is an outside invention of mainly British and Americans that confused Germans with Dutch (therefore the American Dutch communities like in Pensyllvania are German (Deutsch...) and not Dutch at all).
It gets more complicated but that's details.
