  • Seattle’s best of the Nineties had their share of great songs alongside clunkers. Legendary quartet started recording first so their overlooked gems are first. Long, strange cover Fobb on their second EP is nice while Slaves and Bulldozers absolutely kills on their first album with final plus classic lineup. Superunknown’s title cut sounds like cool grunge/Motown experiment which succeeds. Kurt Cobain plus others were more successful overall-meaning failures a lot more noticeable than contemporary brethren. First was Heart-shaped Box, a real snoozer from only studio project influenced by wife Courtney (shameful behavior when married). Bowie’s great Man who sold the World is lowlight of decent-if-overrated Unplugged, virtually their finale. One last recording appeared years later: You know you’re right. Dishonourable mention goes to an earlier cover known as Molly’s Lips. Overall the lone contender in grunge otherwise remains Alice in Chains; they were supplanted once 1991 hit although trio kept producing notable work until three years later.
