The 2021 Toyota Sienna sees a ground-up redesign from the old model that brings an all-new hybrid powertrain into the mix, as well as all the technology and features you've come to expect from their family (and dog) hauling minivan. But is it truly better than the old minivan? Here's why we think it is.

Good review. Shout out to Blaze
This is a terrible review, he said the 3rd row seat is much easier to put up than the previous model, I have the 2011 Sienna and it's literally the Exact same seats 😂. I wonder how much Toyota paid him for this review.
I owned a mini van for years. When it comes to hauling people and cargo, nothing beats a mini van. My six cylinder engine was surprisingly quick for a vehicle of its size. And fuel economy was very acceptable. I could park in any parking space or parking structure, and easily fit in any standard 7 foot garage of your typical home. Mini vans have fallen out of favor in recent years. The cross over and SUV are considered "cooler" today. I'm not sure why that is. A mini van is simply the most versatile on the road today.
I completely agree. I grew up w minivans and loved them. When we first had our twins, my husband refused to get a minivan. We got a large suv instead as a compromise but it was inadequate in carrying 6 ppl and all the baby gear. We later replaced it w minivans and couldn’t be happier. 6 ppl and plenty of room to spare! And much more fuel effiecient too.
Minivans are definitely more practical for family duty, but just like station wagons before them, they developed a stigma for being uncool. So families started gravitating to SUVs. Now that families default to SUVs, they're starting to develop and uncool vibe. Hopefully people will go back to minivans because they make a heck of a lot more sense.
@@palebeachbum my concern is that with the rapidly dwindling minivan sales, I’m not sure it’ll be worth it for mfrs to continue to produce minivans after this crop of current generation. It took Toyota 10 yrs to come out w a new generation and FCA 9 yrs to come out w the current model. They’re definitely not putting much resources in developing new minivans.
Some time ago my fiance and I thought triplets were on the way so I went to my buddy who owns a used car dealership. He had a few large vehicles but the most cost-efficient of the bunch was a 2010 Toyota Sienna Limited. We found out later that the triplets were a lie told to us by a doctor, but the van stayed as we figured it could be useful later. That later came when a new company started sending out requests for tire deliveries(I am an independent courier by trade) and the van has absolutely no problems carrying huge numbers of tires. Add to that it is exceptionally luxurious even if the infotainment definitely shows age, so really long shifts are a breeze and I don't have to worry about how to cram in the orders. Soon I will hopefully become a Bird Flier so I can use the 120v outlets in the back to charge Bird scooters while out driving! Long and short is that this vehicle is objectively the best vehicle in the fleet by a mile, and I'd probably have to spend a fortune if I ever wanted to replace it!
@@Wasabi9111 that's definitely true. Hyundai discontinued their minivan several years back, which I take was not a good seller since it was only around a few years. Oddly enough, the Kia variant is still around today.
I came for the Sienna tour but stayed for the puppy. Cutest thing ever.
Awwwwwww 😪🤧
🤮
Anyone who is in to road trips would know how good the minivan is. I for one know.
We have Pilot, Highlander, sedans but Sienna has been always used on all long road trips.
It's so weird to me that they have a spare as an option
YES. I rented a Kia Sedona once and my god, I was impressed with how much space it had. It fit 7 of my friends and all their luggage with such ease and comfort.
If owning a minivan is up for debate, know one thing. Automatic sliding doors are not comparable and are superior to any alternative. Owning a SUV doesn’t add inches to your pecker. Ride in comfort like a true executive with proper leg room. Who has time for opening and closing doors anyways ?
@@themegamind5 It is like being a celebrity. At least for the dogs and kids. Push the fob and the doors are already opened for them. Like a space ship my son said.
It is officially creeping me out how much similar he acts as his father.
They’ve obviously spent lots of time hanging out hahaha
Creeping me out more if he isn't...😁

I love watching these videos with my Bernese Mountain Dog Boaz. We enjoy watching blaze ❤️
I will settle for: TLF Blaze and cars & TLF Blaze and trucks
Had an '04 Sienna as my car in high school, it best car for a teenager to have hands down. I could take 6 friends out for coffee during school, it best car for drive in theatres, even drove across the US and Canada. 197,000 miles and never left anyone stranded.
I still have a '04 and still love it, but living out in the country now have to trade for something with more ground clearance. And sure hope they built the driver doors with better welds in them!
I’m sure dads loved it when you picked up their daughters in a minivan 😬
I'm looking forward to the slip test for the AWD version!
Should be similar to RAV4 and Hylander EAWD systems. Compared to torque vectoring AWDs not as good but much improved from previous gen EAWD Toyota's. Not a lot of HP but pretty good torque, space savings from no drive shaft or transfer case and outstanding fuel economy. Perfect for winter and mild off-roading (although few would be off road in a minivan 😁).
Adding Blaze to the review....that’s pure TFL magic
I bought a 2020 in August when I heard how horrible this redesign was going to be. The 2020 is one of the most reliable vehicles produced. It has a proven drive train with a naturally aspirated V6 and 8 speed automatic. Forget about reliability and low cost repairs with an AWD hybrid, but if you are only leasing it probably doesn't matter. Also, the 2021 AWD system can not produce very much power at the rear wheels. The 2020 active torque system is much better in the snow. Forget about using the 2021 for hauling things because the second row seats are no longer removable. I have large dogs and need to remove the second row for easy access and space.
Check out Everyday Review’s 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid Torture Test video. He literally took his family on vacation where he drove through the mountains. He said he never once felt that the engine was strained. Got really good MPG too!
I’m driving a 2005 Toyota Sienna with 298k with zero major issues. Huge interior space and excellent ride make driving minivan better than driving big SUV. Room, ride and reliability rule.
This van looks amazing and we are looking to go from our suburban to a minivan. This may be the one we get!
Make sure to test a 2021 Odyssey as well they’re pretty awesome too!
AWD is awesome
Nah get a Chrysler Pacifica
@@autobotavengerfireballxl5339 I’m sure they’d prefer the reliability of a Toyota though.
@@JBrown-go8ru yeah. New CVT and brand new hybrid system is sure to be super reliable.... Growing up in the 90's, van was life. In the 2000's, it was about the suv. Im thinking the van will make a come back. Still waiting on the new Tundra but this van is sweet regardless.
I have a 2018 Sienna and love it! The ride is smooth and comfortable and can carry oodles of stuff and people in comfort.
Old model: v6 reliability, power, and removable second row seats. Nuff said.
That non removable second row is saddening and a deal breaker.
Actually the 2nd row seats can be removed! You just have to take out 4 bolts and unclip a wiring harness and they will come right out.
@@ikelee
Tell that to the ladys or guys who never picked up a wrench before lol
@@ikelee If i have to use a wrench that is not removing, that is disassembling. My 2018 tacoma has a removable tailgate sort-of no wrenching but you have to unplug a wire.
The seats are a pain. I have doubts this won't be very reliable though. I'm looking forward to buying one used as soon as they're under $10k. I have a 2006 AWD Sienna I converted into a camper. I'd love to replace it with this van
I still have my 2004 sienna le. 94 k. Great vehicle. The only complaint is that in the winter, the sliding side door freeze shut after a snow storm. The quality other wise is great. I’m a Toyota guy as I also currently have a Tacoma a 4Runner and a corolla s. I can’t bring myself to buy any other brand as Toyota has been extremely good to me.
Minivans are super underrated. Also, luxury carmakers could have a field day with the space in a minivan
But they don’t. Mercedes-Benz Metris is one of the most basic minivans out there. It’s a shrunken Sprinter
@@TobyCostaRica Many people convert them themselves or have it done by a aftermarket builder to ultra luxury transport vehicles.
Convinced my parents to get a 2014 Sienna instead of a Highlander. The 2nd row seats are so comfortable and at 6'1" there is so much room and the 3rd row is also good up to just over 6'.
That said, I much prefer the previous version, as the 3.5L with real auto allows for great towing in hilly, windy terrain. The van tows 3000 lbs 2600 miles each summer to the cross country cottage and back. The transmission programming works so well when towing, go near the brake and it down shifts a gear or two depending on how hard you brake. They are real rocket ships unloaded as well! Not really into the new looks (inside or out) or the engine/trans offering.
The 2021 tows 3500 lbs and still gets 36 mpg.
I mean this would probably have way more torque
Never buy the first year of a new generation vehicle (nor the last year of a previous gen).
The manual instructs the operator to use trailer brakes above 1500 lbs.
The old Sienna has more power than a Honda Ridgeline.
Blaze should be a standard in ALL car reviews you do. In terms of the car, I miss the V6...
I think all family with kids should have a mini van. Doors that slide back will keep your kids from opening a door and hitting the car next to you. Mini vans don't get the love they deserve. Also bernese mountain dogs are awesome.
I'm still rockin the 98 sienna @250K, love that box🥰
My dad is buying the XSE since our sienna is from 2013 LE. can’t wait for a car upgrade!
This huge minivan only gets 1 mpg worse fuel economy than my mom's 2013 Chevrolet Volt (when running as a hybrid). That's just crazy progress. If Toyota made a Prime version of this with at least 38 miles of electric range, it would almost completely render the Volt obsolete (assuming it would still be less efficient when running on either electricity or gasoline).
This minivan is my favorite minivan of all of its competitors its very nice I like how it has a refrigirator
I will be trading in my model 3 for this sweet minivan!! As a single guy, I can’t think of any better way to find my soulmate!
I bought my 2012 when I was 45. Great for hauling surfing equipment, mountain bikes, sleeping in, picking up building supplies, large TV, furniture, everything. Only person to compliment me on it was an old guy, who liked how it looked (as do I).
No woman has been attracted to it, but I wish you luck nonetheless.
Had the current Ridgeline been available when I bought my Sienna, I would have probably bought that. However, I don't regret the Sienna; it has been an awesome utility vehicle.

Carry mattresses, drywalls, frigs, water heaters, the list goes on and on. That is why!
@@ChristIsLord7 trucks are often not an option for those with a family. A van is much more versatile. Also, have you checked prices on used Tundras (or trucks in general)? Upwards of $20k for a 2008 Tundra and that's with 150k+ miles. A used previous gen Sienna is probably the best option for the OP.
33mpg combined vs 21 for the old one. Its a global shift. They will sell a bajillion of these. 10 years ago we didnt get a full sized mini van because of mpg.
The official number for FWD models has gone up to 36/36/36mpg! 36mpg on something this big and spacious is nothing short of incredible. I saw from another video that AWD drops those figures to 35mpg which is extremely impressive.
@@ikelee 36 is crazy. I'll wait 2-3 years to make sure there aren't any issues. My toyota echo has 180k+ with 0 repairs. Same plugs, wires, belts. Did have to clean mass flow sensor.

Also, the gear is manual. Believe me, those gear boxes with buttons or wheel buttons are pain!
Are the captain chairs removable? Can you fit 4x8 sheets of plywood in with the doors closed?
I wish the center console could’ve been optioned to be replaced with a front bench seat or deleted for an access walkway to the 2nd-3rd row
We owned a 2004 Sienna XLE which offered tons more space & utility than our trade-in Land Rover Discovery SE7. Only con was no "Stow n' Go," seats for the 2nd row captain's chairs. We averaged 21 mpg at the time. Great review Blaze!
You get a like just for having Blaze.
I had the opportunity to travel across country in a 2015 Sienna back in summer of 2018. It was a great vehicle for everyone except the driver (usually me, the dad). I spent 3 weeks with that car and loved it's practicality, but hated the driver experience. Looks like Toyota has addressed some of those issues with this newest generation. The scenery of the southwestern US is epic from those middle row seats. The windows are MASSIVE. Best seats in that van are the middle row.

I like the sienna more than any other minivan out there
Really don't understand why people prefer SUV over minivans. Minivans are so much better in every single way. What mainstream cars/SUVs have power doors? Sliding doors are way more practical and better than regular doors and provide more room. Not to mention way more space (even more space than full size SUV), better mpg, way more practical, usable 3rd row seats, way cheaper than a full size SUV, way more luxury and more comfortable than SUV of the same price range, and the list goes on. And only in a minivan can you get a first class style recline backseat (that you can only find in ultra luxury cars) for under $50k. Not to mention the legroom and headroom that surpass even the S class by a long shot.
The only minivan I’ve had was a 2004 Siena when I was a kid and I loved it going on long 6 hour trips to my grandparents, and I loved it as a kid, but now recently I’ve seen it as old and disgusting. But I’m happy to see they have come along way
I came here for the 4x reviews and now I want a minivan.
Tommy, #35mpg is fine but how will #Nurburgring lap times be affected by the 4 cylinder Hybrid, will the Sienna still beat the Huracan? Does the AWD Sienna still out-climb the Wrangler on the Rubicon? BTW you were lucky to have real Volvos in your childhood and cats get more views. :-)

The manner in which the third row folds up and down is the exact same as previous genrations - not much easier. Good video!
It should be easier. The previous gen required 24kg of force to raise the 3rd row seats. The 2021 model only requires 9kg. I would say that is a significant difference!
As soon as you said Hybrid and four cylinder I don’t want one I’ll get the older one thx
haven’t driven one but that’s why it’s called a hybrid, 4 cylinder gas engine and 2 electric motors, gas still costs you more, really depends how long it takes for the battery to die… power does not seem to be an issue though and V6 are gas guzzlers

One of the prime advantages of a minivan over a SUV is that the driver or the front passenger and access the rear compartment without exiting the vehicle. Minivans are therefore now becoming less desirable than a SUV with each redesign.
I totally agree. I’m a multi generation/brand minivan family and with each subsequent new model, the minivans are becoming more like suvs and less functional. It’s very disappointing for true minivan fans.

Ecvt is completely different from a metal belt CVT and has none of the associated reliability issues. It still doesn’t shift though, but I didn’t miss that. I’d really like to see highway hills and towing test for this, that’s one thing the dealers won’t let you do on a test drive and I’m guessing that’s where this power train suffers

Ive been waiting years before I buy a new sienna. Awesome van, I just don't like the hump by the rear end. It looks like they tried to make it more of a SUV than a minivan.
Yes. The styling is inspired by SUVs.
After the pandemic ends, I’m going to buy me a Sienna so I can go the office and work from home.
Thanks for the review! Looking for one of these!
I've driven the Sedona, Pacifica, Caravan and been passenger in the Sienna. I enjoyed the Kia the most and would be my pick to own.
I loved my 2004 Sienna, it remains the most comfortable driving position of all cars I have owned. But this Sienna's new huge grille is so ugly I would almost be embarassed to drive it. All-speed cruise is a great feature for commuting with stop-go traffic. Tow hitch for bike racks is nice, that is a must have nowadays.
That back row works exactly the same way as my 2014 Sienna. I don't think they changed it.
Great review. Every vehicle should have to pass a Blaze test now. He's awesome. As a side note, I find it's easiest to teach dogs to sit by holding a treat just barely higher than their head and moving it towards there rear slowly. This causes them to backup and usually sit while their eyes try to follow the treat they know is in your hand. I usually leave my pointer finger outstretched like it's pointing toward the rear. Once they sit, you give him the treat. Eventually you just point toward their rear and they sit...spoken words become optional. Usually, the dog gets to know the word and the gesture and will respond equally to either. So excited for blaze to be part of the TFL family...maybe he'll get a No Pavement Needed spot???
Also, minivans do get a bad wrap. I don't have one currently, but we've owned several over the years. They are always the perfect road trip vehicle, and they are still comfortable for getting around town.
