The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

They threw out the mold with Ethel Merman. That is what a star is!
There is no more true talent or glamour like this anymore. I am glad I was born in the early 50s and was exposed to all of the greats such as Ethel Merman, Judy Garland, Gordon McCrae, Benny Goodman, Irving Berlin, etc. I could go on and on. This was wonderful. Thank you for posting this. More please.
What a voice, Ethel Merman had talent and class.
Thanks for sharing!
You'll Never Ever See anything like this ever again, just sensational entertainment from a time long gone! Ethel Merman was a fantastic singer and extremely talented lady!!!!!
THIS is what you call premium entertainment, bar none. Perfect blend of star, backup performers, orchestration, staging, fashion...you name it.
P.S.: I wonder if the Sullivan show audio technicians had their hands full (in a good way) with Ethel's booming voice, as far as the overhead microphones were concerned. If it weren't for the fact that they had to balance sound between the stage and the typical viewer's television capability, they probably could have just let her sing without mic assistance.
I so totally agree with all of the positive comments already given to this magnificent performance. Look at how easily Merman goes from being totally vulnerable to hilarious to romantic to simply thrilling. I know this is not today's current style of performing - but how I wish it was. The choreography, musical direction, set, and lighting is superb. The series of curtains that open before Ethel walks out set up her entrance superbly. And only a star like Ethel Merman deserves a build up like that. And then, how she delivers! (And don't you just love it when she's "shooting" the guys in ANYTHING YOU CAN DO?
She is a national treasure.
Was and always will be!
What big boomin' beautiful voice!
Sensational... "Let's Go On With The Show!"
Happy Wednesday... thank you for sharing! 💖
What a performance, and what a production!
This is pure entertainment!!👏👏👏😃
Ethel was Beautiful !
What a great medley of songs by the great Ethel Merman! I couldn't stop smiling She could belt them out in style and there will never be anyone else like her with that kind of style. I haven't seen this clip before, thank you so much for sharing it.
Terrific!
She was just phenomenal, that kind of entertainment does not come around very often. She was just a jewel!! The greatest Broadway star ever!!
A show-stopping performance from the special hour and a half long episode of the Ed Sullivan show which celebrated Irving Berlin's 80th birthday. This is a medley of Berlin's songs written for "Annie Get Your Gun". Ethel also sang a medley of Berlin songs with the Supremes on this episode which has also been posted.
....it's great that we FINALLY get to see Ethel's opener, now that The Supremes' sections of the Episode have been released; I always thought it was insulting to see Ethel 'rushed out' on the Supremes' Medley... but, NOW, I see what she did, before it....a GRAND affair....
Fantastic that this is available after close to 60 years. I love it!🎉🎉🎉
...Helen Lawson.... -I mean - ....Ethel Merman....gave an OUTSTANDING performance here, ALL performed LIVE....She may have been thought of as "Old Hollywood" by 1968, but she shows a TRUE sense of Performance....Neely, THIS, is a *STAR* .....
Ethel Merman is such an incredible powerhouse of musical theater. She really was the first big star of broadway and she was a supernova
Stellar performance! Thank you for sharing this! Ethel Merman certainly knew how to entertain! God Bless You & stay safe.
Thank you my darling, the show is over but the tune lingers on.
She always delivered! Never a bad performance.
I’m impressed with all the work involved in such a number. Great performers make it look easy but it is an extremely difficult feat.
I’d love to see posted this show’s closer someday, where all the guest performers gather round Berlin and his birthday cake onstage. 🎉❤
I watched her on a two part "The Lucy Show" last week. It was funny how the two little boys on the show were over the moon because Ethel Merman was performing at their Boy Scout show.
I'm coming mama, I'm coming!
That entrance would put most WWE stars to shame
Same episode Diana Ross and The Supremes appeared with Ms Merman 😊
Merry Christmas Ethel Schwartzkiss! Love you. Don xoxo (December 24, 2023)
Love you Ms. Merman (Ethel Schwartzkiss!) Love, Don xoxo
Ethel Merman was great, without question, but as a near twelve year-old, in May 1968, I was already rolling up my eyes when Ethel appeared on countless TV shows back then - AGAIN (!) singing that "Show Business" number. Good God, dear lady, enough! I guess Ethel saw it too when she later "spoofed" herself in the 1980 "Airplane" comedy film. Playing an insane asylum patient, thinking HE was Ethel Merman - singing the "Show Business" song. I never laughed so hard. Cheers to the grand Ethel!
Unforgettable. Arranged performance by Ed aSullivance, after the death of her daughter.
To Ms. Merman. When do we get to have our picture together so I can state that God truly loves me best!? Love, Don xoxo
Nothing's The Same Anymore.
I suppose contrived appearances like this one are out of fashion nowadays.
But, they did their best to make Merman look active. Like a volcano she rose to the occasion.
MS Merman, You Naughtiest of Vixens, who has my heart as your "appetizer" You got a PhD didn't you! Love you very much! Don Neuhauser, Jr. December 30, 2023
🏆 Bravo!
Cantava muito fácil!
If I never wash my hands again after I meet you, you won't think I'm weird will you? Love, Don xoxo
Tad, my love. When do I see you dance Leprechaun/Shamrock?! Love, Don xoxo
A queen for telling Jennifer Holliday to stay in her place
So you ladies are guilty because you had such a great time who wouldn't want to do this over and over? Love you. Don xoxo (I suspect some people aren't prepared for where this is headed) Love, Don xoxo
I think this works because you're Ethel Merman and Ms. Streisand is Barbara Streisand and Ms. Garland is Judy Garland and I'm Personnel. Sometime after the Beatles, we become very "uncool" Oh well. That's life. Love, Don xoxo
How is the year 2024 Treating you My Love, Ethel Merman Schwartzkiss. I look forward to meeting you. Love you. Don xoxo
WONDERFUL! Could you please post Connie Francis'tribute medleys of Cole Porter and Gerschwin next. New uploads of Miss Francis have been missing from this channel much too long!!
Not sure what you're missing. There are at least a dozen posts of Connie on the Sullivan show, right how on RUclips. Just search "Ed Sullivan Show Connie Francis." Or are you saying it has been a long time since a new post has been added concerning her Sullivan show performances?
@@andydrewlinger9301 They are saying that the channel has not uploaded Connie Francis performances on the show in a while.
No mic sticking out of her ear or on her forehead! Ethel would plotz if she saw what went on today on Broadway.
SHE JUST SCREAMED HER WAY THROUGH BROADWAY
more Rosemary Clooney please!!!
Yes.. I can ride with Rosemary all night... This stuff gets a bit shrill after a while.
Bette Midler was definitely influenced by her.
How campy now.... I love it but it's campy.
Oh, Bette Davis helps, but not much. You know how lazy she is. Only two pictures in her whole life. Maybe next time she'll do better. Love, Don xoxo
