The YMCA in NYC used to rent out single occupancy rooms. That’s what they mean by “stay at the YMCA.” Lots of young gay males would’ve been homeless without the Y back in the 70s.
The Black police man character: Victor Willis wrote all of the songs. He once dated Phylicia Rashad for a brief time. All of the group members did drugs back then but Victor eventually became a notorious crack fiend and was at one time kicked out of the group and lost the house that he owned on Haight Street. All of the other members, unlike Victor, were gay and this song was in reference to the YMCA being at that time a place where gay men would hook up on the low. In the street scene you see the sign of a gay bar called "The Ramrod" that used to be there in NYC. When I lived in SF, Victor lived down the block from me. Another video: "NAVY" was more identifiably "gay" than "YMCA" and is hilarious! Victors songs were a spoof of masculine Gay men. Another hit: "Macho Man". Victor has in recent years cleaned up his drug habit and he continues to own the royalty rights to his music.

In all fairness, the band is mostly known for being one of the earlier manufactured musical acts. They were literally put together by music exec's to be the most marketable and broadly appealing band as possible.
Man, this came out when I was in high school back in the 70s, when being gay was still a scary bad thing. This was probably a lot of my friends' first time seeing a group that was out. (We loved the song anyway!) This silly cheerful thing is more historic than you might think!
It is joyous. Even if you knew what it was about and you were not gay yourself, it was still a favorite. The energy is so positive and upbeat that it infects you.
In a way it is positive because they are telling other gay men there is a safe place for them in any city. My uncle used it in the 80s when he first came to NYC.

What art can they create? I hope this is a jumping off point for them to become creative themselves instead of spending their whole lives being passive watchers of the work of others.
I must say your genuine, positive reaction to this ‘70’s classic made me really focus on the message it conveys and feel like I was just hearing it for the first time! I appreciate you for that. 😊 Thank you young men for doing what you do...we need more positive energy these strange days. ✌️ and 💓
evn when I used to go to clubs in the 90s in London - when this song came on there used to be such a rush to the dance floor - it was like watching a tidal wave sweeping over the whole club ... it was surreal to be dancing to it in the 90s when I first danced to it in 1979 aged 11 !
It is genuinely a good message, though. A lot of young people, in particular gay people, who had been kicked out of their homes and excluded from society, needed to hear a message of hope, that there was a place they could go where they would be accepted. Having it specifically be the YMCA in the song was perhaps a bit specific, but probably reflected the local reality, and it sort of stands in more broadly as a metaphor for the then-underground gay community. Since there was a lot of overlap with the disco scene, it made a lot of sense to put that message out in a corny disco song with a lot of obvious subtext, a catchy chorus and built-in dance moves. The message, broadly, is "your life is not over".
This was a big hit and is played at sporting events, weddings, tons of sites even today, lol. Lots of folks made fun of this campy group in their funky costumes, but the songs have lasted a long time. There is even a dance move that spells out the letters YMCA with your arms, really corny. People often roll their eyes when this song plays, but most EVERYONE of a certain age knows it and the moves.😂
I’ve been dancing to this since it came out. I was a little kid but I had the dance down. I have always known people in the community so I know what it’s about.
My brother interviewed a couple of these guys when he did his master's degree. They talked about the big anti-disco backlash (I remember disco record burnings, even). Some of the backlash was against the slick production and simple beats--we got punk as a result, but some of it was against the women, people of color, and gay artists that were embraced by disco. I still have a few of my brother's signed Village People records. A bunch of talented session musicians (including brass instrumentalists) suddenly lost their jobs when disco died.
Yeah Steve Dahl got fired from his job at a rock radio station when it switched over to disco, he organized Disco Demolition Night in 79 at Cominsky Park in Chicago, many of the people that hated disco were either rock fans or people that thought it was overproduced gay music.
Well the thing is that its not wrong to see it on its surface merit alone. Yes, their is the deliberate double entendre but that doesn't negate one or the other which is why double entendres are fun.
I think it's beautiful they saw it without judgment. Perhaps it's time we all start accepting people at face value. The Twins review was wonderful. I appreciate their fresh perspective.
Loving your interpretation so much - this is why this song was so universally loved by people who had no idea what was up at the YMCA (I was a kid when it came out and felt exactly like you) :D --- Please do the Cars "Since You're Gone" (Tim you will LOVE the syncopated rhythms!) and the Archies "Sugar Sugar"
Also I noticed when you guys were listening to Journey you guys had a difference of opinion and instead of putting the other down you actually raise the brother up you keep up this philosophy and this action of class diplomacy in love for your brother we need more of that in this country again thank you and God bless you!
@TwinsthenewTrend... Fred said, "I definitely understand what he's talking about..." 😉 OMGoodness, so sweet. He's (Fred) not wrong, though. 🤔🙄 The WORDS THEMSELVES don't match the historical context so it's more like an inside joke that all of us old folk are in on...and let's face it, that's what the Y WAS supposed to symbolize, all the opportunities the song is talking about. The fact that it turned into a Mecca of gay cruising subculture is just incidental and now it's an interesting dichotomy...and HILARIOUS. Since the twins are always asking to be schooled on what the artist is talking about, in this case they're not wrong because that's exactly what he is talking about, except for the fact that the rest of us really know 'what's up' and can fill in the blanks. That's why this is an important discussion. It's like a history lesson. 👍🏼
Very true, as I was growing up and singing along, I didnt necessarily always know what they 'really' meant. It's all good. Love you twins, don't change.
They also grew up at a different time than we did. This video was as much a part of what they were talking about at the song was and now, people just dress that way. Now, it's not even noticeable whereas then, they stood out as part of a subculture. I love these two; they remind me of how young and naive I was, too. And I'll still dance to this song, anytime!
Heck, I still request it! My daughter got married 2 years ago this coming December, and the dance floor was packed with 3 generations of people doing the arm motions!
Haven’t seen Victor for years. Years ago when the group broke up he was trying to get his own thing going. Victor use to come to my store and hang out, him and his brother Morris, good people.
I just love watching y'all comment and appreciate the music from my high school years! Our favorite past time in middle school was to go roller skating on Friday nights. This was one of the songs that everyone used to do the arm movements to... kinda like one of the first Tik Tok dances! Y'all are great- keep sharing the love 💕🌻
Just enjoying another reaction during my lunch break. ☺ So awesome that your subscriber numbers have almost doubled from when I first started watching a few weeks ago. You'll be at a million in no time! Keep up the great work 👏👏
There have been a few reactions that would be great to see the re-reaction when they learn more about them. Rage Against the Machine "Killing in the Name of" for one.
I am torn between being totally charmed at the fresh unburdened perspective on this song (being able to enjoy it just for its simplicity and seemingly straightforward message in today's time), and being sad about the context of the controversy and uproar and history behind the song when it originally came out, when this reaction is what it should have been about in the first place. But I am so happy that this is what people think now when they hear the song! I really encourage you gents to look up why this song was such a big deal when it first came out and the impact it had on the LGBTIQ community and society at the time. Thank you for doing what you do, it may seem to many people to be just a frivolous silly fun thing to listen to a bunch of old music but this is more than that. Music is such a massive part of telling human history, and bringing these songs up in a new context gives so many a chance to not just listen to things they've never heard before, but to explore that history behind what these songs meant at the time, and how we've changed, and recognising that songs like these were a huge catalyst for that change.
I think they mentioned in a previous video they tried Guns N Roses but it was blocked. Not sure which one they did but they liked it. Would have been great to see.
This reaction is HILARIOUS! The gay undertones/overtones are totally lost on the boys. The costumes worn in the video represent various gay stereotypes/fantasies. The lyrics are thinly veiled comments about gay fun to be had at the YMCA and the location where the video was shot shows a notorious gay cruising site- the old warehouses along the NYC waterfront.
And now, in a different context, it can mean anything that it means to whoever is listening to it. Context is everything. It also fades. Isn't it nice that the song holds up in different contexts for different people in a different era.
I am so very impressed with the comments. I am older and am aware of the origins of this song, but I'm very content like most of the comments to just let the twins enjoy it with their own poetic interpretation. I like it. It shows how kind they are.
I love you two young men. I used to love going to parties and dancing to this song. We were young and having fun and all the other stuff meant nothing to us. We were just having a good time and loving life.
@@jgirl20 It has different interpretations. But I agree with Adam Duritz's (Counting Crows) thoughts on song meanings which is whatever the lyrics mean to you is what the song means.
So funny; I just watched and that was my thought too; from now on my interpretation of this song will be the Twins'--and they're not wrong. So here after decades of knowing this song played at every wedding, every stag and doe my whole view of it has changed thanks to these adorable guys. Tim and Fred; thank you for how refreshing and true you're staying.
The fact that they state that they have actually gone to the YMCA on more than one occasion gives more value, in my opinion, to thier view on the song's message. Hopefully they will give a listen to 'In the Navy' as well.
I hit refresh on the page and this song popped up. My first reaction, lots of laughter. I can't wait to see their reaction. I loved this song and still like to dance to it when it comes on.

I hope they're all looking down at us and hearing that it never went anywhere.
"I definitely understand what he was talking about..." ALL I could think is nooooo you really don't! 😂🤣😂
I remember skating to this at the “roller rink.”😂😂
Oh MY God Yeeeesssss!!!! and skating low with one leg stretched out to the side!
Popa Leti I split my “cords’ in half with that move!!! Haha
Yess !
Me too. Hehe.
Omg. The roller rink.
OMG....YOUR LIFE HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN IF YOU JUST DISCOVERED THE VILLAGE PEOPLE😲👍❤
🤡
Absolutely...I had that one on the list
Instead, I’d say their lives are now unfortunately ruined 😂
That’s what I’m saying!! Someone played these guys
So, does this song have a dark meaning, because if so, I never realized it. Sweet and innocent 69-yesr old.
Love that they are judging this song with fresh ears, listening on its own merits......but is anyone going to tell them?!
Haha
😂🤣🤣🤣😂🤣😂🤣🥳
@@DrPamelaReilly so do i...never forget that generations that come after yours have valuable things to teach you...
Y'all need to listen to some Hot Chocolate - You Sexy Thing
YES, please!!
YES! YES! YES! PLEASE!!
YES!!!!!
Heard this for the first time watching the film The Full Monty.
Oh, yes. That is a good suggestion.
Fred said, "I definitely understand what he's talking about..." 😉
OMGoodness, so sweet.
"Code" of various types in song lyrics is definitely an ongoing thing throughout history all the way up to today.
Back Stabbers - The O’Jays
This was the goofiest song on the planet and yet everyone loved dancing to it....🤠🤠
Yes! Requested at so many weddings during the 80s and 90s. Good times.
Heck, I still request it! My daughter got married 2 years ago this coming December, and the dance floor was packed with 3 generations of people doing the arm motions!
Sure had fun dancing to this in the day.
Right now I just wanna go back there....
It's not goofy at all! It's super dope.
Haven’t seen Victor for years. Years ago when the group broke up he was trying to get his own thing going. Victor use to come to my store and hang out, him and his brother Morris, good people.
Not only do I love your reactions to the music I grew up with, you have also expanded my musical horizons. Much love!
FINALLY! A SONG I REQUESTED MADE IT ON HERE! SO EXCITED! MAKE THAT TWO! I JUST SAW BOYS II MEN AS WELL! 😊
These dudes make my day every time they upload
"A Change is Going To Come " by Sam Cooke
I think they did a react to that already. You might try searching it.
@@TechnicallyTexan thanks I will...I just recently started watching them about a month ago and I can't get enough of them lol..
Try Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, 'I Second That Emotion'.
Exactly....the message in this song and the group is powerful!! Togetherness, believing in you and keep pushing forward!!
I love the twins innocent and genuine take on this song. I remember doing the Y M C A dance as a kid.
When you realize you've never actually listened to the lyrics of a song you've heard approximately 1000 times...
Spot on!! 😆
Same...I'm 36 and never payed attention to the actual lyrics other than "YMCA"😂😂🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
Good to see you back. I hope you are all settled in to your new home.
Can you please play "Sledge Hammer" by Peter Gabriel?
Yes! Please, please, please react to "Sledgehammer." You will not be disappointed! 😁
Agree!
What a great dancing tune. I don't know how many times I've done the spell out with my arms....good times 💗
Keep up the great work 👏👏
The Archies: Sugar Sugar
Love that one
Al sugar Shack
Oops also
I meant sugar Shack
This content is amazing its like seeing someone who was under rock discovering things for the first time lol
NEW IDEA: When you fellas figure out the truth about the music and people you're viewing, do 'Aha Moment' videos.😊
They know the score already Im sure. They are just being polite.
Great idea
If you got disowned by your family and ended up in the big city with no money...
Where's my fellow children of the 70's who just sat here in front of the screen and did the full arm movements for Y-M-C-A ?!
Y'all make my day with EVERY reaction!!!
Guns and Rose's Paradise City and Sweet Child of Mine, both are great. You guys always make my day!
I think they mentioned in a previous video they tried Guns N Roses but it was blocked. Not sure which one they did but they liked it. Would have been great to see.
Axl Rose is a cry baby
PUNK
The thumbnail for this 😁 and thanks for reacting to it. I forgot all those horns and strings. Also had forgotten there was an official video. 👍
You two are so fun!!! Love your reactions!!! You brighten my day!!!
Interesting. I had no idea.
I don*t think the twins are that innocent. but talking about it here would probably sound wrong. I think the twins really welcome everybody
And now, in a different context, it can mean anything that it means to whoever is listening to it. Context is everything. It also fades. Isn't it nice that the song holds up in different contexts for different people in a different era.
Think about it, though... even back then, a lot of people nationwide had no clue what it was all about.
There's an Indian stereotype/fantasy? LOLOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL OMG
this song is a classic ALWAYS get ppl on the dance floor ....great reaction boys xxx
I am so very impressed with the comments. I am older and am aware of the origins of this song, but I'm very content like most of the comments to just let the twins enjoy it with their own poetic interpretation. I like it. It shows how kind they are.
There are dance moves that go with this song, back when I was in high school every body was doing the dance and singing along
I love you two young men. I used to love going to parties and dancing to this song. We were young and having fun and all the other stuff meant nothing to us. We were just having a good time and loving life.
Now you gotta do, “In the Navy” & “Macho Man” by them.
Hahahahahahahahahahaha you make my day
Just made a cold, rainy, snowy day in Boulder, CO much better.💜💜💜
Poor you
Hope the sun comes out soon
Yeah fr literally high 80s in Windsor to high 20s the next day. Atleast the fires are hopefully going to calm down.
Yea what’s up with you and your weather? Hang in there
I’m going to go with Tim & Fred’s interpretation of this song from now on. If you think about the YMCA today they are correct.
To be honest..this is the first time I really listened to the lyrics...so based on what I heard...I think the twins got the message right.
@@jgirl20 It has different interpretations. But I agree with Adam Duritz's (Counting Crows) thoughts on song meanings which is whatever the lyrics mean to you is what the song means.
Couldn’t agree more.... . So glad they interpreted the way their fresh minds view it....👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
So funny; I just watched and that was my thought too; from now on my interpretation of this song will be the Twins'--and they're not wrong.
Hopefully they will give a listen to 'In the Navy' as well.
it's so great to hear about your own experiences at the YMCA and how it has helped the both of you
The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics never fails to choke me up.
They must do that one!!❤
God yes
What a downer!
I hit refresh on the page and this song popped up. My first reaction, lots of laughter. I can't wait to see their reaction. I loved this song and still like to dance to it when it comes on.
I suggest reacting to So Fresh So Clean by OutKast y’all boyz will love it
I don't know if they still do, but the YMCA used to rent rooms to men who needed a place to stay.
They still do in my city.
I think that the McBurney Y is gone - sold to developers - but the West Side Y still does.
Yes. Not a lot of homeless shelters then. This was a step up (most of the time). Place to get some sleep and a shower.
I came from rough area in Scotland and we went the YMCA’ lol 😂 loved this
U two are joy to watch......luv the honest reactions to this song. It was a big hit back in the day. Try roller skating and doing the YMCA actionwith u arms. Luv u youngmen!
Great song! So much controversy with it even in the 70s too.
Raised in the 60s and most of the 70s by a single parent, the ymca gave me sports and after school activity. For some odd reason one was archery lol.
I lived at the Washington DC YMCA in 1974 for $5 a night. Then a couple years they released my song. Great reaction to a cool song. You two are blessed!
Just love you boys. I'm a 67 year old mom who raised my son on seventies music. Have a go at Moody Blues, Pink Floyd and Emerson Lake and Palmer.
Y= Young
M= Men's
C= Christian
A= Association
This is a classic!
you guys should definitely react to Steve Winwood - Higher Love!! ...also Joe Cocker - With a Little Help From My Friends!!!
Yesss! Higher Love!!!
Listen to AC/DC - You shook me all night long.
Highway to hell
Hell’s Bells. Definitely Hell’s Bells.
Or Back in Black.

@@katherinemorelle7115 I am pretty sure they have reviewed "Back in Black".
Just make sure its not the Celine Dion version
Back on the 1970s- you could stay at the YMCA it was a prequel to a hostel- you could rent a room but shared a bathroom.. but now it’s a “gym”, etc.
A lot of Fun! Thanks Tim and Fred Williams. Joan and Keith Bates
