Hydlide is an old and somewhat notorious game, mostly because it has very strange gameplay mechanics. For the first part of the game, walking consumes health, and the character must stop every now and then to regain it.
This is one of the few games (the only one?) where the level grinding sequences are actually entertaining, while the boss fights aren't. Hitting a boss decreases your own health as well as the boss's, after which there is much waiting for more health until you can hit him again.
This is an improvement of 03:54.80 over the previous TAS ( tasvideos.org/... ), due to overall better levelling strategy and route planning.
There is also a submitted TAS ( tasvideos.org/... ) that uses codes and removes the need to level grind or wait for health.

As a grown-ass adult, another grown-ass adult tried to tell me that HYDLIDE, was actually HYRULE, a prequel to Legend of Zelda.
I will never forget that conversation as much as I try...

i wonder how different this games reputation would be had it not been released in the west when it was. when it originally came out on japanese pcs, it was actually a fairly inventive and important work, though of course it was still derivative of its inspirations. but when it came out in the west, it really was a relic of pre-codified jrpg design.
The player looks so much like Scion of Erdrick that RUclips thinks that this is Dragon Quest I.

If you piece the main theme and the ending theme properly, it really sounds like the theme from Indiana Jones.

Even as a kid, I was mesmerized by this game’s shittiness. I felt compelled to finish it in spite of that lol
May God have mercy on those that actually endured this game in their youth...bless you if you actually enjoyed it too.
This is an example of a game that made parents hate video games in the 80s.

At least this version isn't using the original version of Hydlide's music which is somehow more repetitive.

This game is AAASSSS
It's a cool product of it's time, but man I hate the bumper system. Hated it in Y's and I hate it here. Great ideas though, feels like the entire series was great ideas but bad execution.
