I had a friend many years ago who would come into my tavern after a day skydiving at a nearby airport in upstate NY. He would always come with a group of friends. Dana was a flight attendant, I believe with TWA. Handsome young man about twenty three years old. One day he was skydiving and his chute did not open. As he got closer and closer to the ground he frantically attempted to fix it and fix it he did, at the last moment. Unfortunately he was still injured quite badly and spent several weeks in the hospital. Still, he cheated death and that was a good thing. Once back to normal he decided to fly out to Hawaii with some friends and tour the islands. He and the others were driving along the coast when he asked them to stop so he could run down to the shoreline and take a photo. While he was standing there getting his camera ready, (no cell phones in those days) an enormous wave came out of nowhere and washed him out to sea. His body was never found. True story. This story made me think of Dana's experience, and so I thought I would share it.

I lived through hurricane Maria in September 2017 in Puerto Rico. All I can say is when water is mixed with high winds your mind plays tricks on you. I could hear my moms voice through the water and winds calling my name mind you she had passed with cancer the year before. So I can vouch for many people who are in storms hearing voices and believing they are real. It’s hard to keep your sanity.

You are EXACTLY right! I'm a Floridian, and have been through over a dozen hurricanes. Some of the worst, like yours, the wind has been almost ghostly. The scariest was hearing a loud rolling sound and I opened the door and looked out just in time to vaguely see what I thought was a tornado drop down and start towards me. Went and got under a mattress with 2 others in hallway. 6 hours later it had died down enough to go out and you could see the line a tornado took. Roofs gone, trees down, it took a full neighborhood effort clearing debris 48 hrs just to be able to leave our couple blocks. Over 2 1/2 weeks before power started trickling in. I'll never forget the sound that wind made.

A further proposal is based on the psychology of the keepers. Allegedly, McArthur was a volatile character; this may have led to a fight breaking out near the cliff edge by the West Landing that caused all three men to fall to their deaths. Another theory is that one of the men went insane, murdered the other two, threw their bodies into the sea, and then jumped in to his own death

I'm from Scotland and we covered this story in high school. There was apparently 3 bigger than normal Ravens perched on that buckled railing and they raised their wings at Joseph in sync but did not flap them or fly away but were not there when he left the lighthouse to go back down to the dock. Storms were not in the story and neither was the log book. There was a table set for 3 with food on the table seemingly fresh, 1 chair was toppled over. Could all be speculation but thats what i learnt of it. Absolutely addicted to this channel! Love all these mysterious stories. I have a few scottish stories that I think you will cover well... The grey man of Ben Macdui, The drummer of Courtachy (my dad lived there and experienced it,) a house where bad things always happened and when the person in the house dies usually in a horrible accident, that night you hear a drummer in the forest circling the property. hope that is some more fun for you and consequently, us! keep up the great work!

Much better than both of mine. We lived about 600 to 900 yards from a flat roofed, rectangular, concrete and steel bar jail (made in the 1800's Indian Territory, now Oklahoma) in a small town where Tom Mix had been marshal at one time. My grandpa would tell me wild stories how he was Tom Mix's deputy and about all the wild west shoot-outs they got into with outlaws. I'd get so excited and tell my mom who would tell me flat out "Those are called GRANDPA STORIES and they NEVER happened. Grandpa would just say, "yeah, uh, I didn't say that. I don't know what he's talking about," and sneak out of the room. So when my other grandpa, who was almost 20 years older than the first one, would casually tell me crazy stories about a marshal named Frank Eaton who would spend time with him and his family, and others, at the family dairy in Guthrie, I didn't really listen and didn't ask questions. A few years after he died I read Pistol Pete's autobiography and was bewildered how much there was in common with Grandpa's stories. I mentioned to older family members who basically said, "Well who do you think the Frank Eaton was that the family knew?" I lost the chance to ask Grandpa questions, but did get to see old pictures. I wish I had paid attention.

Then, i realized how stupid i was, when i discovered the "voices" was water from a leaky faucet dribbling in the tub in the bathroom next to the kitchen. My exhausted mind interpreted the sound of water dribbling from the faucet splashing onto the tub as "voices". ... My 1st trip to Edinburgh was in 1979, I toured Hollyrood Palace, made a left turn into a small music area where ancient instruments were setup on display then made another left turn into a gallery where all of the oil paintings of the kings of Scotland were hanging, I suddenly felt that I was being watched from one of the paintings, upon leaving the palace I had a compulsion to visit the ruins of the abbey. In 1979, the abbey was off limits as they were shoring up the site, I tried opening the garden doors and found one unlocked, I took a photo of the area in which I stood looking into the abbey ruins, suddenly I was embraced, this feeling lasted for well over a minute and I knew that if someone else were there they would feel it as well if they touched me. This embrace will never be forgotten, it was like being loved inside and out, as if my blood, veins and bone were brightened. I thanked God because I knew this was a heavenly embrace, like nothing else I have ever experienced on earth. Swear this is entirely true.

I think two of them went to secure the supplies and equipment but were swept away by the severe storm. The other man went to help them in a hurry because he could see or hear them struggling, which is why he left his oilskin... and unfortunately, he was taken by the storm also. Maybe it was cold due to the storm, so they snuggled up in bed to keep warm. They where tired, exhausted, and hungry. Maybe that's why the beds weren't made or they wanted to quickly secure or retrieve their supplies. The food on the table was probably being prepared by the one waiting for the other two who went to secure the supplies, etc. He then heard their cries for help, so he arose quickly from his chair, causing it to topple over.

    To answer the question:
The logbook entries emerge several years after the incident. There is no contemporary reference to it, and no such copy exists. They never recorded a storm.
The lighthouse guidelines stated one man remain indoors, the other two can be out. It is most likely that a rogue wave rapidly developed while two were out. The third man would have raced to the door to reach them. As he did, the wave took all three. This would explain the damages. It also explains why the kitchen doors were open, but the external were closed.

There are rare times when high altitude air currents shift downward and actually smash into the ground. The jet stream may have sent winds crashing into the island. The reason it would have been so clear is because those upper atmosphere winds could have been clearing out any fog that would normally surround the area. In my mind I see two of the men eating a meal when the third man who is outside in relatively good weather after the anomaly subsided working without his raincoat. As the wind suddenly comes crashing down from the jet stream again in one last episode blasting the island: they can hear him screaming and the decide they have to go out to try to help him. They put on their coats and rush out but the winds are so powerful all 3 are swept away and end up drowning. This is just what my imagination comes up with when I imagine what happened to these men and I don't have any real evidence, but I feel like I can see it happening vividly in my mind

However, when MrBallen gives the "too long, didn't read" version of HIS stories he is actually giving a "too long, didn't LISTEN" version. Too long to even LISTEN to a story that is approximately 15 minute long? Come on, people. Are we really that busy? It's not as if you can't multi-task while you're listening. Good story, Mr. B. Possibly the lighthouse keepers met with an alternate dimension, in which they did encounter a horrific storm. I recall once, as a child, when at my grandparents' ranch during one of my visits. On a bright, sunny day, I stepped outside and encountered a group of people I had never seen before, whom shouldn't have been there. They were talking to one another, yet I could hear nothing. They vanished one by one until only one was left. I turned and ran inside the house screaming. They were either ghosts or I temporarily encountered an alternate dimension.

You can't see wind: in the log book they describe intense winds. The narrator immediately uses the word storm twice and hurricane once after reading that log entry.
This is where he misdirected you to believe it was a hurricane like storm tho the actual log only mentions winds.
That's why the "storm" wasn't visible from the mainland.
Also for anyone who's spent time exposed in prolonged moderate to intense winds, it definitely breaks your nerves like nothing else.
And these sound like world record breaking winds

      Let's use deduction.
Keepers say storm, mainlanders say no possible storm. Someone's probably lying.
There were iron rails and a huge boulder shuffled, so there was probably a storm.
It would be easier for the mainlanders to lie than the keepers to move indestructibles.
I'd like to hear how many mainlanders they interviewed and find out if they had anything to do with the keepers' disappearances.
Perhaps the keepers were short on supply after the destructive storm and asked a few mainlanders for help.
Something went wrong which led to a fight or hostile interaction that killed one of the keepers.
The mainlanders killed the other two keepers, covered any evidence, then lied with exaggeration about it to hide their involvement perhaps.

    • @nataliedickens1289
      @nataliedickens1289 2 года назад +12

@Astolfo Desu following that logic tho, we don’t actually have enough evidence to conclude that the main landers would kill three people, with enough consensus for everyone in on it to lie convincingly enough that there would be no follow up investigation and/or to cover it up. So that theory is just as made up and the dimension theory. I’m not saying that it’s wrong, I’m just pointing out the fallacy.

Maybe the "coming storm" they were talking about was based on the intense winds they were experiencing? People from nearby islands wouldn't see wind and winds could actually make it more clear, causing them to see more of the island than usual. Possibly still could have been a rogue wave caused by severe winds and the people from nearby didn't see it happen because it was quick.

Sounds like straight line wind. I've seen straight line winds Bend Steel but affect nothing else around it. I've also seen it rip a giant cottonwood tree to the ground But the trees on either side and the houses on either side nothing they were fine. Also the island could have been on a higher elevation than the mainland so they were getting the winds and the mainland's didn't feel it because it was too high up.

    • @DickDickstein
      @DickDickstein 3 года назад +49

The crystal clear island visibility sounds odd too. Made me think it was inside the eye of a hurricane, but it would have to be insanely small hurricane. Doesn't make any sense that the people seeing the island couldn't at least see the wind affecting the island, or even huge waves.
Doesn't seem like those weathered old men would be that upset by just some sort of precisely blowing wind, or call it such a storm.
I wonder if those guys were all just tripping balls on something and had a group delusion, and ended up being swept out to sea. Combined with the type of winds you describe in that state might make them think it was some supernatural occurrence.
I don't know...I can't imagine that those types of guys, having experienced the kinds of sea weather they had would be that panicked unless they were experiencing a mind altering state. Food was sitting out, and they were still writing journals. Beds weren't made. One of the coats was still there.

I had no idea about this phenomenon, so I looked it up on Wikipedia. The only thing that seems off about it, is it last seconds or minutes, apparently 20 minutes is a long time for such a burst, and the storm at the lighthouse lasted for days.
Other than that, it pretty much checks out. The Wikipedia page has photos of cargo containers of several tonnes being pushed up hills. It mentions an incident at a belgian music festival that was hit by such a burst, killing five and injuring 140 people, with winds of 170 km/h (106 mph).
Perhaps there was an ongoing storm over where the lighthouse was, at sea at a higher elevation, and independently several such bursts that shifted the rock and freaked the lighthouse keepers out. Perhaps one hit when they thought everything was clear, and it knocked them into the water.

I wonder if the movie “the lighthouse” was inspired by this island.

      yes it was!

    • @slopothacrop

      From Google:
What was the lighthouse inspired by?
Loosely inspired by the real-life undoing of two Welsh men - an 1801 incident now referred to as “the tragedy of Smalls Lighthouse” - the film transports audiences to the past with its black-and-white imagery and 1.19:1 aspect ratio, shot through lenses designed in the early 20th century.
So no, it was not inspired by this event but one similar to it.

Love the new details on this. They could have been doing dock repairs after the storm, and one fell into the water. Then they tried to save them and all got taken by dangerous currents that can happen when water travels around an island.

I'd like to know if there were sheep on the island after their disappearance. If there were no sheep then I'd go with a freak storm, but if there were sheep then something else happened. Is there someway you could find out??
