Most covered song in history, until a bunch of lunatics try to rewrite history by erasing it on the internet. the reactors who discover this do not realize what a great service they are doing to preserve this song for all time by repeatedly exposing it to the world. I became a music teacher because of the Beatles in large part.

Paul likes to tell the story about how just prior to singing this, backstage hand says to him, 'are you nervous?' He says, 'no, not really.' Stage hand says, 'well you should be, there'll be hundreds of millions of people watching!'

Paul woke up one morning where he was staying at his girlfriend, Jane Asher's, house. He had the full melody for Yesterday in his head when he woke up. He shopped it around a lot because he couldn't believe how easy it came to him. He thought he might have accidentally plagiarized it. Similarly, he woke up from a dream, years later, about his mother, Mary, where she told him to stop worrying and just Let it Be. This is the most covered song in history, according to Guinness Book of World Records. It is also the first song of The Beatles with only one of the band members performing on it.

Yes, Paul McCartney is a genius. A real genius. Nowadays, it is often said that someone is a genius when they do something amazing, but the truth is that there are very few true geniuses in any field. In modern music of the 20th century we could count them on the fingers of one hand. Paul is one of them.

Love seeing these old clips. There are a few such clips for their early banger "Long Tall Sally", and one of them shows quite a bit of Ringo just going nuts on the drums. It's so fun. It's what they would usually close their live shows with when they played in Hamburg, Germany.

I feel very fortunate to have seen them play live in London back in the mid 1960s, and met them at music publishers Dick James Music, who set up a separate entity Northern Songs for Lennon/McCartney/Harrison. At the time I was (and in fact always was) a less than successful songwriter. Paul used to live along the road from me in Maida Vale, West London. Greetings from the UK; and ps my bday is also 2Oct - just about 60yrs difference!
Watching the video through again, and noting your comments about the girls screaming, I recall that fingers in my ears was an easy way to filter out the high pitched sound , and enabled me to clearly hear the music being played. lol

The thing about this song is that McCartney wrote it two years before it was recorded, and sat on it for all that time because he couldn't believe he had conceived of it. He believed he must have heard it somewhere else and unconsciously stolen it, that he wasn't good enough to come up with it himself. It is probably the best thing he ever did.

He did check with others for awhile to make sure the melody was not done already by someone else. He did not have words at 1st and the "working" lyric he had at 1st, was "scrambled eggs" before he arrived at "Yesterday". Their producer, George Martin, convinced him of using strings. Most other Beatle instrumentation like strings were a lot of Martins collaborations and he is sometimes labeled "the 5thBeatle' As one who was able to see the Beatles when they toured, I was just a male that just tried to listen to their music with much appreciation. They did perform this Live with rhythm guitar backing. You can find clips of that.

He had some working lyrics called "Scrambles Eggs" and finally came up wth Yesterday. Decades later Paul admitted that the song was not so much about a break up as it was about his mother, whom he lost to cancer when he was 14. I can identify with that...when I was 38, I lost my mother to cancer. My dad and younger brother are now gone...so I tear up when hear this song, especially this Ed Sujllivan Show performance from 1965. When we watched it as kids, I remember my mom saying "That was a real good song....that guy's going to go far if he keeps that up."😂 It was only Paul , his guitar and a string quartet. In their live performnces without the strings, the song does not come off as tender as it sounds here. You were right, the girls were so mesmerized by the song...they quieted down, a RARE occurance at a Beatles performance. The power of music well written. I will soon be 69 in a few days. this song means so much more when you're older.

I recently lost both my identical twin brother and my favorite pet of all time, a feral cat I rescued as a kitten, within three months of each other due to cancer so this song means even more to me now as it reminds me of them. I do feel like half the man I used to be without them being in my life anymore.

yes, Steph, the story of how this song 'came to him', fully written, is amazing. It reminds me of Mozart, who would 'receive' complete symphonies, and just simply had to write them down in musical notes. The other famous and similar Beatles song of his is 'Blackbird', and much later there was another one during his solo career 'Jenny Wren' - all 3 are so magical in their haunting simplicity. And yes, Paul cannot be described other than being a genius. 🌈💖

The most covered and famous song (apart from Happy Birthday) ever written. Even John Lennon loved it, which means a lot. This is the beginning of baroque pop and also the first Paul solo song. The other Beatles didn't participate, just a string quartet by George Martin (okay I see that you read about it as well :D). That was a total game changer in the whole popular music genre. Never seen before that one member of the band goes out on stage to sing a song by himself. Nowadays George's Here Comes the Sun is the most streamed Beatles song, but when I was in school in the early 80s THAT one was the song you knew first by the Beatles, maybe together with Help from the same album and A Hard Day's Night, Michelle, Let It Be, and Hey Jude.

The clip is from the Beatles' one other visit to _The Ed Sullivan Show_ after three appearances in February 1964. They taped this along with five other songs in mid-August 1965 (shortly after the album George mentioned, _Help!,_ was released in the UK), and the set was aired mid-September. In the U.S., all songs on side 2 of the UK _Help!_ LP (including "Yesterday") that had not already appeared earlier on _Beatles VI_ were withheld for later release, so while the U.S. audience had already heard the majority of the songs the Beatles performed, they had never heard "Yesterday" before, and were thus intrigued to hear what they were being newly introduced to!
In the UK, the song was tremendously popular on the album, but was not released as a single, while in the U.S. it came out as a new single in mid-September, right around the airing of the program, and became a #1 smash. In the UK the song eventually became the title and lead-off track of an EP (a 45 with two songs on each side) in March 1966, and about a decade later finally got issued as a single, years after the group had broken up.

An absolute gem of a reaction. Watching you enjoy it as much as you did nearly brought tears to my eyes. To me, your reaction is proof that you have a genuinely beautiful soul. Believe it or not, the original lyrics Paul wrote for the first verse were, "Scrambled eggs, oh my baby how I love your legs, not as much as I love scrambled eggs." Thank God he reconsidered those lines.
Not long ago, I found an interesting photo online of the string quartet standing off to the side of the TV cameras while Paul performed the song. I previously thought the strings were always prerecorded for the live performances. If I can find it again, I will gladly send you the photo.
Cheers to a spectacular 2025 to you and yours.

@MsAppassionata I have no doubt that playing a violin takes a lot of dedication. It's generally not like a guitar or piano where you can simply play for the fun of it to pass the time. Several years ago, I bought a used CD of Beethoven piano sonatas: Pathetique, Moonlight Sonata, and, of course, Appasionata. All three were solo recordings by Vladimir Horowitz. I paid less than $5, and it was the best investment I ever made. I sure wish I could play a tenth as good as him.

With regard to string accompaniment to Yesterday, perhaps it was ultimately Paul's decision to include it in the song, but I recall reading that it was the Beatles producer, George Martin, who recommended it. Long before he met the Beatles, Martin had a respected career as an arranger, composer, conductor, as well as being a producer for various artists. Martin wrote the string arrangement and presented it to Paul for consideration. Paul was initially reluctant to the concept only because it didn't align with the Beatles image of being a Rock and Roll group. Needless to say, Martin's instinct proved correct.
You may want to consider reacting to another Paul song: Here There and Everywhere. It was, in fact, recorded precisely one year to the day after Yesterday. The song has an absolute beautiful melody along with some of Paul's smoothest vocal work to date. It features masterful chord transitions that enable seamless key changes that are hardly noticeable to most listeners. Lennon was typically harsh in critiquing many of McCartney's songs after the band split up, but he freely admitted that this was his favorite. The only drawback for you is that no formal music video exists for Here There and Everywhere, so it would have to be a reaction to an audio track. But please don't let that stop you. Never deprive yourself of the opportunity to enjoy great music.

@tdgallagher again, you are correct. it certainly was their producer George Martin who suggested using a string quartet along with Paul's acoustic guitar. It was not Paul's suggestion as was said in the information Steph read.

Yeah, good songs are timeless, and the reason The Beatles have endured is because of the quality of the songwriting. Back in 1965 Beatlemania and the world's fixation on The Beatles as this four-headed phenomenon was still at its peak, so it was a HUGE DEAL that one of the four was stepping out on his own. That just wasn't done back then. But kudos to them for doing what was best for the song instead of sticking to some kind of group identity formula.

@George-ux6zz Sorrym that is incorrect. The last song they would USUALLY sing at their concerts was either "LONG TALL SALLY" (A LITTLE RICHARD cover) sung by Paul, or "I"M DOWN" also sung and mostly written by Paul. BOTH songs were rockers. They never ended with "TWIST AND SHOUT" You many have been confusing it as a last song, because it IS the last song on their 1st UK album "PLEASE PLEASE ME" They usually OPENED with "TWIST and SHOUT" (which is a cover of an ISLEY BROTHERS song) When I saw them in 1966 in Cleveland when I was 19, they opened with "ROCK n' ROLL MUSIC" I saw also saw them in 1964 when I was 17, also in Cleveland and they opened with "TWIST AND SHOUT".

In this television appearance the string quartet track from the Abbey Road recording was played back on stage monitors. In my opinion the best version of this song is on the 2023 reissued Blue Album compilation because Giles Martin , George Martins son, was able to use Peter Jackson’s new audio software to separate individual musical elements and remix them so now the string quartet behind Paul’s voice is in amazing stereo.

I claim that Paul McCartney is the greatest musician of the 20th century - the 21st has only just begun. And I'm not just saying that as a fan. Paul is a multi-instrumentalist and plays almost all genres of music. He has even written three or four albums of his own classical music.
You may not agree with me in your assessment of Paul, but in 100 years you will see that I was right. 😉

Paul talks about how Marvin Gaye, Elvis and Frank Sinatra covered the song. He says they sing "I must have said something wrong", instead of "I said something wrong". Come on. "They are not owning up!"

One other thing, and it's certainly a very minor thing. But The Beatles song yesterday is not one of the most covered songs in all of history, but rather, it is THE most covered song in history, not ine of.

'YESTERDAY' se grabó un lunes 14 de junio de 1965. ANIVERSARIO 60.
Esa versión en el Show de Ed Sulivan fue el sábado 14 de agosto de 1965, al dia siguiente los Beatles dan su concierto en el Shea Stadium en NY

Just like 60 years ago. The girls like Paul but then most of the guys liked John. Since John was killed over 44 years ago Paul has had a remarkable career outside both the Beatles and Wings. Longevity means a lot.

Same recommendation to all reactors- listen to the original single (studio) version of any new song before exploring live versions. The single record is the one that made the original impact on the music world.

@phils3884 I would argue that THIS LIVE performance in Sept. 1965 is how WE in the U.S. first HEARD and SAW Paul perform it. THAT is what sold we fans here on "YESTERDAY" It sounds just as good as it does on the record. I believe Step is like me, in that she would rather see a VISUAL of Paul or all the BEATLES performing their songs than only listening to the audio. She wouldn't have become as emotional if she just heard it. I cried watching him sing it that night, he did it so beautifully. I cried this time too, watching it, because at 77 it brings back so many poignant memories of my life as a teenager and all the loved ones and family members I have lost over the years. She can always listen to the record on her own Back then we were STARVING for VISUALS of the Beatles performing. We didn't get that option here like they did in the UK and EUROPE. They were on TV all the time then.

This may be the only Beatles hit on which only one of the four performed. (Of course, a string quartet accompanied McCartney.) Generally, they all played on each track. However, there are some other songs, especially on the White Album (e.g., “Julia” and “Blackbird”), where only one of the four is performing.

Although the melody has since been identified as perhaps not as original as some make out, it is one of the defining features of Sir Paul's work that he could grab melodies seemingly out of the air. Which is the key to genius. I don't know what his perspective is on it today. One of the issues with his current performances is that he prioritises the familiar over things he has recorded since (even quite recently). But maybe that's just a case of knowing your audience. After all, when he started out, pop stars very rarely wrote their own material.

I’m curious what you mean by the melody of “Yesterday" not being original. I’ve never heard anyone claim it came from another song.

Those little screaming brats robbed the world of nearly all of the live Beatles performances that could have been. However, they also gave the band the opportunity to live full time in the studio, writing all that great new music. Butterfly effect, indeed.

I have never understood this recoding because the vocal is clearly live and slightly different in places to the studio version. But it has the backing strings, which I very much doubt were live and also they don't come in from the start, so where did they come from? Was his guitar and the strings all pre recorded? - seems very unlikely. Anyone?
