He also pulls the "I hate logos" bit that CinemaSins bleats with painful predictability. "Creators taking credit for their creation? That's a sin!" says the guy making money by tossing witless snark at another person's hard work.
People tend to forget that Ellie was raised in a military academy, so she probably learned a lot of skills that would be useful and that's how she can do certain things in the game that you wouldn't initially expect her to be able to do.
Thalia Mirror EXACTLY! Plus why wouldn’t they teach the students how to drive different vehicles in case they’re out in the field and get stranded? No way someone would assume they’d let a team be screwed just because no one learned how to drive a stick shift
I love that most of his "sins" are just literary plot devices that are used to create tension, instill emotion, explain a character's motive or intentions, etc. He's just trying to appear smart by exposing how stories are created. If he hates the idea that writers write things, maybe he should just stop consuming art.
I like how Dartigan is criticizing every single cliché for being unoriginal and repeated (even if they're used well), WHILE USING MEMES AS JOKES!!! WHAT ARE MEMES IF NOT CLICHES?
Anytime these channels point something out as being a rip off or imitation, I like to scroll the comments to see if someone points out the Irony of them sayin that.
I'M A REAL CRITIC GODDAMNIT. I H-HAVE TO P-P-POINT OUT *CLICHES*!!! *foams at mouth* Yeah it's dumb and phony and pretentious - a common problem with internet self-proclaimed "critics". One can find these kinds in their natural habitat of any fandom.
"Dartigan seems to be completely oblivious to the concept of an ambush." Best line. It actually started to become a shame when the ambush thing went as far as it did.
16:00 also! When enemies are aware of you, they sometimes hide behind objects and stay still. This way, on high difficulty at least, you can't actually detect them with your hearing vision! So it's still entirely possible to ambush someone in this world.
Арсений Брилёв In addition, in survival mode, the listen ability is disabled, so you could also argue in that difficulty universe, Joel can't tell where enemies are aside from actually hearing or seeing them.
One of those cathartic moments for me is when he points out that no one would actually expect a zombie apocalypse and respond confidently. Anyone that claims it is on the same level as an edgelord. I have the same visceral reaction when people complain about how characters respond in a genre movie. You know the protagonist isn't crazy when they claim to see supernatural events in a horror movie because you saw it from their perspective. You know you're watching a horror movie. The police officer thinks they are a background character in a police procedural or mystery movie. You just know the person that says they'd go for a headshot if they saw someone looking like a zombie is going to be getting a psych evaluation in preparation for the trial for murdering the accident victim looking for help.
Additional sin: the layout of Sarah's room is actually genius, and gives us a bunch of insights into her character. Without a word of dialogue being uttered, we can tell she's a tomboy who really enjoys things like soccer, skateboarding and cheesy action movies, but she also likes to read young adult fiction and probably has a strong romantic side, and there's probably other things we can infer about her but it's been a while since I played the game. Considering we don't spend a lot of time with this character, and yet she's an essential part of the plot, these little details go a long way toward helping the player feel some connection to her as a person.
the ambush thing is so weird. If they were overpowered by brute force he'd say "looks like the one competent enemy finally showed up." An ambush is a great, classic way for someone weaker (like all the enemies are) to take down someone stronger and change the power dynamic
I love ripping apart these dumbass criticisms but man I also just like hearing about all this further analysis into the Last of Us that I haven't really heard before. Stuff like how the spores work, how they might get destroyed in sunlight or are only threatening in large amounts.
I'm late here, but there is a short documentary on RUclips about how this game was made. I also recommend reading the American Heroes comic and looking at all the concept art. That gives you a chance to delve deeper into this world and its characters.
Dnb120 The channel that posted this video has a whole other video about why CinemaSins isn't exactly sarcasm and why they're bad for film. Even if you don't agree, it's worth checking out.
jesus christgau The funny thing about the guy who made the original video is that he claims TLOU's cliches and uninspired aspects are sins, while being a guy who stole the original CinemaSins guy's entire shtick. The same presentation, same bell ting, and the same smug tone. The only difference is the CinemaSins guy isn't a complete moron.
Think of it like this. Someone hated this game enough to make a 15 minute video pointing out every single thing they didnt like about it. Thats days of work. That kind of hate can only come from ignorance.
Are you people serious, or are you just pretending to be stupid? It's hard to tell sometimes, especially when I know some people actually take these "criticism" videos seriously. Cinemasins intentionally nit pic their sins, they've stated this numerous times. I'm gonna guess the Gamingsins guy is too sins he copied their schtick. So why are people acting so butthurt in comment sections? Is it people just getting in on the joke, or are people actually this friggin' stupid? The reason I ask is there seem to be far more people acting as if they think these "criticism" videos are legit criticism, not the overly nitpicking "critiques" for comedic effect satires they actually are.
Because when the CinemaSins guy nitpicks, I can see his reasoning. This guy's nitpicks are terribly thought out. And being unoriginal isn't a sin so long as it succeeds at doing its own thing.
How can your channel, along with Shaun and Jen's, not have millions of subscribers? This was not only very humorous but seriously insightful. Thanks for pointing out the flaws in the whole "everything wrong with..." series!
@@aguywhowatchescartoons368 Thank you for giving me a laugh at how well this comment aged now that Shaun has become an even bigger RUclipsr by *leaning in* to the SJW stuff
@@anthonybencivengo6901 I’m pretty sure the main reason I watch Shaun is exactly because of the sjw stuff lmao. Also, I honestly adore his personality
This video, and the video game, mean so much to me. My father was emotionally distant to me and my siblings growing up, and I see a lot of Joel in him. Therapy has helped a lot and really helped us come together. And I'm a survivor of multiple childhood sexual assaults. The scene with David was so cathartic for me and just so well done and so real. I love your comment shutting down the critics cluelessness about what was happening in that scene. It was humorous but still maintained a respectful tone toward the issue of childhood sexual assault. Which many people including the original cinema sins don't maintain when talking about, for example, which movie it's okay for them to start thirsting after Herminoie in or in the original criticism for the game, thirsting after Ellie.
God, so many of these "sins" are mind achingly insufferable. Bless you for rebutting them. "Oh no, this part of the game reminds me of a scene in an unrelated movie! *ding*" "I can't fill in minor gaps with my own imagination or by referencing similar situations and experiences from real life! *ding*". Good grief...
I loved the deer story! I was doing the same thing while walking one day and saw a huge buck about 4 feet away, staring right at me. I stomped to try and scare it off and it stomped right back! Deer don’t always scare easily.
Hey Bob, wanted to stop by and just say thanks. Your videos pretty much kind of snapped me out of the blind following mindset I had and proved facts are not overrated. I've made a couple of Everything Wrong With Everything Wrong With videos myself and I tried following examples you set here and from my other inspiration, Th3Birdman. Wish you could keep making videos like this. Stay safe, dude!
Regarding David and Joel not appearing in any scenes together, that's also meant to amplify how much of a threat David is to Ellie since Joel isn't there. That's why his boss fight is so scary for both Ellie & The Player
Oh man, I remember watching the video this guy made on DmC: Devil May Cry and when he assigned 9001 sins just for the game starting, due to "lol, it's not the classic games". Not even CinemaSins can get that petty, nor insert a meme that outdated.
Yep, there's probably like five or six of them just sinning games. There's at least three people sinning anime. I've seen that shit randomly in my related thanks to Bob's latest obsession. Thanks, Bob. : |
I really love these takedown videos you do, not just because they rip apart unfunny commentary but also because you give a lot of valuable insight into narrative and characters. Please keep doing them
"kid has a skateboard cliche" and there was me thinking kids with skateboards was a very common site in this day and age but nope! According to this gaming sins guy a skateboard is overused as a visual set piece which implies that it's not something you'd see in a kids bedroom very often
I don't know if dude made his video before Uncharted 4 or not, but I was surprised you didn't point out that Naughty Dog themselves did in fact put Troy Baker and Nolan North in two lead roles in their next game!
@Chandler Burse I am calm, but I apologise if I was too direct. No harsh feelings on my end. The video even shows them in their mocap suits filming that scene (is it called "filming" in this context?) so I just don't get how someone could miss that. You're right in that I should've paid more attention to this thread's age. I usually don't reply to year-old comments.
35:40 You are both wrong. He actually does keep that knife. (it's actually just a shiv). You'll notice after certain encounters like the sniper and entering into the dam that joel gets an extra shiv if you aren't already maxed out.
20:41 Okay, that comment (not yours, the original video) was just bad taste and mean-spirited. Talking about a character outliving his usefulness right after he commits suicide over losing a loved one is just bad. Just thought I'd be honest here.
Yeah, it's super tone deaf, especially given how painful the scene is to watch (You'd spent enough time with the brothers to grow some slight affection for them before they died) and thus Sam's turning and Henry's suicide are just another tragedy on a game set in a world full of them. (I haven't seen Dartigan's video, but I assume he likely did something equally as tasteless with Tess' death earlier in the game)
I love these video's man, you deserve way more subs. I can't believe this Dartigan complains about cliche's and yet he has completely stolen the format of CinemaSins, I mean couldn't he have called the videos something other than 'Everything wrong with xxx' or maybe just not called them sins? The layout is the same, the pointless subtitles are the same, the ex machina/cliche/creepy jokes are the same. At least his sin timer doesn't have hours this time. Mad respect for your channel man!
I'd say it goes beyond cliche into impersonation/plagiarism territory. He probably hoped that fans of CinemaSins would see his videos and think they're from the same creators.
Still better than gamingsins, their god of war 3 video was the worst shit i ever watched. It was so bad i felt insulted. I literally have ptsd because of that.
There is one thing acknowledging and correcting flaws. However, going back and looking at his video's currently... He is literally doing the same thing. I don't understand.
jambi Jambii Well, for me, at least he didn't put in a forced joke into it. There is (almost) never a moment where I didn't laugh at his jokes. The most important part is, I mostly knew when he was joking, which that is something CinemaSins can barely do!
Thank you for this. That guy's videos are insufferable. I know his viewers give him an out by saying "he's just having fun" but his videos are like FOURTY minutes long.
They shouldn't exist because the goodness or badness of movies and games has nothing to do with how many "sins" they have, like it's some kind of utilitarian calculation.
I've never even looked on Metacritic, so I don't know, but do they have complete lists of "sins" for each and every movie? If yes, then that guarantees I'll never look at the site, as it's the laziest, most shallow form of film criticism I've ever seen.
This gave me a lot more appreciation for what voice actors do. I like watching you diss these people because at the same time you're paying respect to the creative people that put their art out there.
"Did you want the infected to construct elaborate contraptions just to hide their ancient fungus treasure" Yes. In fact, yes. That's something I would also like.
Spring going into fall??? Does this guy know how seasons work? Spring goes into summer which goes into fall... Damn even this game version is a bunch of fails...
Thank you. Thank you. Didn't realize how much I crave intelligent comedy until this. And also, the plot and acting in this game is better than a lot of movies. I'm a grown man and some of the cutscenes legit made me cry. The only thing I have to agree with CinemaSins on is the awesomeness of that line delivered by a little girl in a jail cell, just the sheer ballsiness of it, I cheered.
Thank you for the point about cliches. People acting like "cliche" is a bad thing always, all the time has annoyed me for as long as I've noticed it. Clearly if somebody thought about it they'd realize that cliches can act as short-hand for authors (or directors, or screenwriters) in order to package a large amount of information in a small amount of exposition. It can be easier and more convenient to use cliches sometimes in order to focus on those elements of the story that truly matter because time is finite. Also, it allows for satisfying subverting of cliches later. Dismissing anything as cliche if you see it for a second is lazy and stupid, as evidenced by "exposition news broadcast cliche". Oh, you mean that on the news they're talking about stuff that's newsworthy? Indeed, what a cliche. That'd be like if you turned on ESPN and sports were on, or weather updates on the weather channel. Should kids in video games not be allowed to play sports, because that's a cliche? Or have glasses, because that's a cliche too? There's nothing I hate more than intellectual laziness, and goddamn does CS (and knockoffs) really embody that most frustrating and annoying of qualities.
It's the voice acting, man. The way Troy delivers that line "you are treading on some mighty thin ice here" just gives me chills every time I watch it. Of course the writing is great too but the performances were something else for this game.
Was there ever a point where ____sins type of videos made good points while being witty or have they always grasped for straws due to lack of paying attention?
I've heard tell that the earlier CinemaSins videos do make some good points, but those videos were usually about 5 minutes long. They've since expanded to 15 probably due to the average investment in a RUclips video being that long, and so that they seem like they're smarter. The ad revenue obsession gets the best of us, I'm afraid.
I'm pretty convinced that people originally watched because they pointed out valid fridge logic, and as you mentioned bloopers in films you mightn't have noticed otherwise. However the only change I've ever seen in Cinemasins myself is they "broke" the sins counter and now they do the previously mentioned fridge logic critiques even less.
Dartigan has his moments. TLOU and Uncharted 4 are not his best o videos. Also, ValeforXD is actually good, but he's only done the Ratchet and Clank games.
Should do a video on the "Why The Star Trek Federation is Fascist " Film Theory piece because I've never wanted to scream at a monitor as bad as when i watched it.
Was subscribe to Film theory and hadn't watched nay of it for like a year until I saw that video which made me scream like a banshee and punch the wall of how dumb, idiotic, reactionary and moronic it was.
That guy missed the biggest sin in Last of Us; that recording from the doctor that says Ellie's blood grows cordiceps readily, thus invalidating the "we need to scoop out her brain" plot point. It really bothered me because it ruined what should have been a very dramatic part of the game, and it could have been fixed by simply removing the collectible from the game.
Sprankton Maybe it adds just another level of moral ambiguity to Joel’s eventual decision, I.e.: “What if this lethal operation that the Fireflies want to perform on Ellie proves to be ineffective or impractical, therefore invalidating the only rational justification I would have for letting my surrogate daughter be euthanized like a sick animal?”
Super late reply, but the fireflies needed to extract a specific mutated strand of the cordyceps that is only present in the brain (it is the part of the fungus that protects Ellie from becoming just a regular infected), meaning that they actually needed to get to her brain.
Another interesting thing to point out in regards to the "being surprised attacked despite being able to pinpoint locations" thing is that in the survival difficulty, your listen ability is disabled, so you can't tell where enemies can be other than actually seeing them or actually hearing their noises without a highlight.
Video games sins is weird because it appears to only be cinema sins applied to video games. It just focuses on plot beats and story elements. When actually, because of technical limitations, trying to appeal to diverse audiences, and how immature the artform is, there are LOADS of actual things to complain about in terms of gameplay in almost every single game. AND there are more misused tropes and cliches where pointing that out would actually be valid.
The arranging still images in rapid succession to create the illusion of movement cliché is one of the funniest things I've heard in a long time, Bob. Thanks.
I'm a long time Dartigan subscriber and I found myself nodding to almost every sin you've given. You earned a new sub and I think you deserve even more. Keep up the quality content!
These must be so much work to research and edit but thank you man. That was glorious to watch. This is a man who sins other for cliches whose entire show was stolen whole cloth from another. It's so lovely to see someone show exactly how they're wrong
3:48 the "exposition news broadcast" is actually a very good and effective SUBVERSION of the cliché, as the explosion that happens in the broadcast also happens outside the window, which is a very good "oh shit" moment, that CONNECTS you to the "remote happenings on the tv", which is... well... opposite to what the news broadcast cliché is. and a very cool and strong and well done moment.
This was actually very refreshing to watch. Glad it was informative and provided reasoning as to why things happened. Sad that majority of it would have been considered not a "sin" with common sense and reasoning, but oh well. Look forward to some more of your Everything Wrong With videos!
Gaming sins: criticizing for something being unoriginal Also gaming sins: has a channel founded on literally ripping off literally every aspect of another channel Missing from the equation: self awareness.
I fear the day somebody makes a video like this for a game I love like No More Heroes or Deadly Premonition something. If such a thing happens, I may have to do a countervideo myself.
Technically, it's not a zombie apocalypse either, sense the infection, doesn't actually turn people into zombies, in fact, it doesn't actually kill, just takes away any & all control, they had over what they do. Also, scientists have found that, something like the Cordyceps fungus, COULD actually cause something like this in real life.
Great video, by the way. I've been holding off on buying The Last of Us for a while now, but seeing this video convinced me to give it a shot. Your takedowns of these faux-intellectual RUclips channels are cathartic and very much enjoyable to watch. Will you be branching out to other channels besides CinemaSins and Dartigan?
Might as well comment as this goes on: 0:51 Yeah, I actually would've stopped watching the video around the same time you did. 3:20 I dunno, it was kinda set up in a way that made it pretty clear she would die early on. Still the execution of her death was done pretty well, mainly due to the acting and the pacing of the following scenes. 3:41 It's a kid with a lot of hobbies, and a lot of kids have the most common ones because.. they're common. They wouldn't really be common if a lot of people didn't have them. And yeah, the whole hobby thing isn't really a cliche, but rather a trope. A very harmless trope at that. Also that "news exposition" scene was done pretty well. The way everything syncs up was neat. 5:34 Ugh... It'd be pretty damn weird if people didn't do panic at all. Could you imagine a robber walking into a bank, shooting his gun and yelling "this is an armed robbery" or something and then no one bats an eye? The guy might even shoot a person out of frustration and yet people still keep on doing their thing as if nothing happened. ... That actually sounds hilarious. A robber trying to rob a bank but he fails because no one gives a shit. 8:00 Bottled liquid animation! Look at dat surface liquid go! Whee! 8:43 Oh, you noticed it too. Well... shit. 8:52 Actually no, it's not necessary. Just make the level design a little more intuitive and help the player understand what to look for in the environment. Highlighting it like this can sometimes be a bit silly, like the ropes in Far Cry 3. But it's a nitpick, this works too. Just don't do it like Far Cry 3 did... 10:59 The puzzles in the game still ended up feeling like nothing but padding. The characters making snarky comments about these didn't really help either. The DLC seemed to realise how uninteresting the puzzles were and decided to make up for it with both variety and puzzles that tie a bit better into the overall setting, so that's a plus. 12:42 How to make an escort mission more tolerable: make the escorted the person act as if the game's rules never apply to them. It's not really a proper solution to the overall problem, but at least it doesn't cause problems either, other than immersion related ones. 15:33 People like to find some comfort in bad situations, things that can get their minds out of the present. Some people do this by collecting stamps, some play video games. 16:10 Still, a bit better player might feel a little cheated by this moment. Those players that pay more attention, look behind corners and avoid walking blindly into situations, will probably feel like the character suddenly forgot everything they did 5 minutes ago. But this isn't exactly a unique problem. It'd be pretty neat if character action games for example had alternate cutscenes that reflect on the player's performance. Like if you get all SSS rank in Devil May Cry, you'd see Dante doing the coolest things ever in the next cutscene, while with a D rank he'd be a stumbling idiot that ends up taking his own sword to the chest and still somehow ends up winning. 20:37 Almost every chapter has a side character that ends up being only in that one chapter and then doesn't show up in the next. And of course the characters happen to be black, so going by the usual zombie movie cliches, it was pretty easy to see how this would end. Still, the acting was good. The way they made Sam talk in such an awkward manner to Ellie about death was a neat way to foreshadow his eventual demise, since it seemed pretty realistic. The actors are good. And then... we just skip over to the next chapter. That kinda pissed me off, since I was interested in seeing how they would try to cope with what had happened and how they would move on. But nope, time skip and only hints about the character development we didn't really see on screen. Yay... At least the next chapter did have some on screen character development to make up for it. 24:26 Or you could do the same the DLC did, and make it sort of like Heavy Rain with interactions and such. Or deliver the action through flashbacks that also tell us more about the characters or some such. There are different ways to handle this, it doesn't have to turn into a predictable pattern. 26:11 Oh my gawd, look at that fire effect! Holy shit, is that an animated flat texture on the ground? Oh my gawd that looks horrible! xD Also holy shit, that molotov did nothing to Joel and the horse! 27:16 Or maybe the AI goes through the gates and ends up triggering an event like zombies, I mean, infected running up to the gate, giving the player a sort of a set up for the next puzzle or something. Just throwing ideas out there, because the puzzles in the game kinda sucked... 27:43 There has been a pretty intense firefight, plenty of enemies around, now there's a closed door in front of Joel and.. he just casually walks up to it without expecting a thing. It kinda goes back to the disconnect between player and the character's mindset, and how the character making a mistake can make the player feel like the game cheated them. Also Joel somehow survives both the fall and having a rusty pipe through his back. I mean.. I guess it's thin enough to miss all of his vital organs. 28:11 Next scene starts starring Ellie so we can wonder whether or not Joel is alive or dead.. even though the player knows that they haven't unlocked every upgrade in the game yet. I love it when the game itself spoils the surprises. Also how the hell did Ellie get Joel back on the horse's back? It's not that.. oh right, the DLC covers that. Well then. 30:41 Sigh... David. At the start he makes the whole "killing bad guys" thing seem a bit more questionable, since he's a person from the side you usually fight. And... then he turns out to be a child raping cannibal. Welp... I mean the torture scene is a nice way to show the whole idea of how Joel isn't really much different from David, how David could be an alternate Joel, but that's kinda where that ends. David's just another "bad guy" that does a bit of mind games and that's it. Neat. At least Marlene succeeds at creating this reflection of Joel, a reflection of the ideals he had before he got closer to Ellie. 32:28 I actually call bullshit on this ambush. I looked over everywhere trying to spot any possible hiding spots, and there was not a single spot from which David could've ambushed Ellie from like that. He just phases into existence the moment you try to open that door. 33:50 "Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?" "You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection." "Oh, yeah... sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!" - The President and his secretary - Metal Wolf Chaos "I hear its amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!" - The Patriot AI - Metal Gear Solid 2 "Do you feel like a hero yet?" - Presumably the Radio Guy or Walker's own delusions - Spec Ops: The Line "Who else will I have ice cream with?" - Blond Haired Kid.. I mean Jesse McCartney, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days "Monsters? They look like monsters to you?" - Vincent - Silent Hill 3...D Revelation is a horrible movie, don't watch it. "Tell the doll I said hello." - Velka, I mean Velka's crow... turned human... with a British accent - Bloodborne "hOI! i'm TEMMIE!" - Temmie - Temmie - Temmie "Jill sandwich." - Jillhazard - Resident Sandwich 35:02 Even if he had tried to go cautiously here, it wouldn't have worked since the alley was so damn narrow. He had to quickly get away from the spot. 35:34 That knife would've most likely lasted about as long as the machete does, and that's assuming it had been maintained well. 36:17 At this point my nurse mom would probably have the same reaction as she did to Texas Chainsaw Massacre: people won't survive with that high of a blood loss. 36:45 Oh yeah, this reminds me of the game's water effects. Don't look at the water stream in Joel's brother chapter. You'll see the water streaming through walls and rocks and all the splash effects are very apparent 2D textures. The water overall looks fine, but these details are kinda humorous. It reminds me of PS2 games. Oh well, I've seen worse, like the waterfall in the Darkroot Basin in Dark Souls 1. Now that looked amazingly bad. 37:03 Congratulations, you have noticed the visual sign that lets us know that Joel's character has come full circle and has reached the end of his character arc. This is how "show, don't tell" works. Yes, I'm sort of replying to the original video here.
2:08 Yeah, I never really understood this as a sin myself. 5:28 Alright, people. Be honest here. Do any of you guys read the newspaper on the toilet? 10:30 Not surprising to me that I’ve heard this exact same sin in another video just like this. Recycled sins. Do you think that infected can open doors? You see, this is part of the reason of why I love Bill. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Maybe that’s also another reason why Frank left Bill. ‘Cause he was jealous. 😏😂 16:27 Yeah. He literally says, “We only take what we have to.” 20:33 Does that look like a bite to you? 21:43 I would argue that the problem with that line is the delivery. Instead of sounding skeptical, Tommy sounds oblivious. Instead of sounding like, “Immune to WHAT, Joel? Are you serious? Stop being ridiculous. None of that crazy talk,” Tommy sounds like, “Immune to what? There’s a pandemic going around? I had no idea. I’ve been living under a rock for 20 years.” There’s curiosity, and then there’s disbelief.
For sin 39 about Ellie driving stick, it's also made obvious in the DLC and the American Dreams comic that Ellie has received military training to some extent, so it's completely possible that some of that training up til now has included learning to drive.
I can't emphasize the rebuttal of the "Ellie can drive" sin enough. It reminds me of the Rey critiques in The Force Awakens. If we start having to show our characters learning any skills that become useful later, our movies/games/whatever medium is going to be way longer than necessary and be super fucking boring.
I found it really cool that Firewatch stuck an Easter egg in the form of a piece of clothing from said college that doesn't exist; they even talk about it not existing in the game
Love this/these! I watched CinemaSins for a while but stopped on account of it being bullshit - great counter-criticism on this & the others. My only counter sin to these is there aren't more of these, I was hoping for a massive binge shitting on CinemaSins! Keep up the good work =D
Another thing with the seasons mistake, "spring going into fall". Does... does Dartigan think fall comes after spring? Or was he saying that the whole game goes through spring, summer, and fall? The game clearly has a time skip, so even without the large, blatant titles, going from fall to winter at a much later point in the story is also pretty plausible? I mean, this whole video is 40 minutes clearly outlining that the guy has no clue what he's talking about, but I'm really confused what he was trying to say with that one.
An important line Joel issues to Tommy, "...seen her take in enough spores to take down a dozen men... Nothin'..." is pretty good evidence for the spore sticking to clothes critique. It shows here that there's an amount you can breathe in. And the fact a grown man might be able to take in an amount before being affected, where women and children might not as well.

Now THAT's a Sin.
Yea I was insulted right off the bat. This is maybe the one game I've played where I legitimately cared about the plot more than the actual gameplay.
And the fact that he's distracted himself, notices it, and intentionally stays distracted is a sin for the game and not himself?
He also pulls the "I hate logos" bit that CinemaSins bleats with painful predictability. "Creators taking credit for their creation? That's a sin!" says the guy making money by tossing witless snark at another person's hard work.
I'll be honest I didn't care about the plot that much.

Darzeedatailorbird And also for having a channel that is, in and of itself, a lazy and obvious derivative of something much more successful.

Yeah it's dumb and phony and pretentious - a common problem with internet self-proclaimed "critics".

Pretty soon, someone is gonna do an 'everything wrong with everything wrong with everything wrong' and this is gonna spiral into insanity.

Best line. It actually started to become a shame when the ambush thing went as far as it did.
16:00 also! When enemies are aware of you, they sometimes hide behind objects and stay still. This way, on high difficulty at least, you can't actually detect them with your hearing vision! So it's still entirely possible to ambush someone in this world.
totally agreed!
yes
Арсений Брилёв In addition, in survival mode, the listen ability is disabled, so you could also argue in that difficulty universe, Joel can't tell where enemies are aside from actually hearing or seeing them.
That would've been a real criticism towards Dartigan.

Just saying, watching this was a cathartic experience and I appreciate the effort put into these. If you have the energy, definitely keep these up!
OrangeVision Agreed and seconded! I'd love to see more with both movies and games.
But watching these smug ass know-nothing donkeys for any more than 10 seconds is torturous.
ThatPazuzu Something that Joel himself employs quite successfully and effectively through the game’s stealth combat mechanics.
I love ripping apart these dumbass criticisms but man I also just like hearing about all this further analysis into the Last of Us that I haven't really heard before. Stuff like how the spores work, how they might get destroyed in sunlight or are only threatening in large amounts.
There's an unfinished story & gameworld analysis by a guy named James Howell here on RUclips if ur interested
I'm late here, but there is a short documentary on RUclips about how this game was made. I also recommend reading the American Heroes comic and looking at all the concept art. That gives you a chance to delve deeper into this world and its characters.
UnitingMilk yeah whenever I heard that I thought, “Huh living in TLoU’s world wouldn’t be that bad as long as you’re on a winning side”.
UnitingMilk You do know the sins videos are sarcastic though, right? Most of the criticism is a joke
Dnb120 The channel that posted this video has a whole other video about why CinemaSins isn't exactly sarcasm and why they're bad for film. Even if you don't agree, it's worth checking out.
these "sins" people must have insanely horrible reading comprehension
Along with pathetic memory, terrible attention span, and poor logic
jesus christgau
The funny thing about the guy who made the original video is that he claims TLOU's cliches and uninspired aspects are sins, while being a guy who stole the original CinemaSins guy's entire shtick.
And being unoriginal isn't a sin so long as it succeeds at doing its own thing.
estimated earnings 90k to 1.5m. THAT IS A HUGE MARGIN OF ERROR, GUYS

I don't know if dude made his video before Uncharted 4 or not, but I was surprised you didn't point out that Naughty Dog themselves did in fact put Troy Baker and Nolan North in two lead roles in their next game!
On the Stick Troy Baker and Nolan North were in a scene together in Last of Us as well though.
@Chandler Burse Did you watch the video you're commenting on? North didn't just play David and he and Baker do have a scene together.
@Chandler Burse He voiced one of the hunters Joel "interrogates", yes. Why comment on a video that you haven't watched?
@Chandler Burse I am calm, but I apologise if I was too direct. No harsh feelings on my end.
The video even shows them in their mocap suits filming that scene (is it called "filming" in this context?) so I just don't get how someone could miss that.

ambush cliche ex machina with a dash of casual racism and blatant sexism
Only difference is that he doesn't bleep out his swear words arbitrarily.

jambi Jambii Well, for me, at least he didn't put in a forced joke into it. There is (almost) never a moment where I didn't laugh at his jokes. The most important part is, I mostly knew when he was joking, which that is something CinemaSins can barely do!
“Utterly meaningless” is a perfect description for both cinemasins and gamingsins
Thank you for this. That guy's videos are insufferable. I know his viewers give him an out by saying "he's just having fun" but his videos are like FOURTY minutes long.
Well, to be fair, games are way longer than movies. You do have a lot to go through.
slycooper20 _ but also you don't have to go through any of it. These shouldn't exist
0utta S1TE also they shouldn't exist because they are terrible and they make people commit suicide regularly. That's a fact I saw it somewhere

Thank you.
"That's not the right morning, dude"
...Or maybe just some really icky foreshadowing?
i considered that too but there are enough other misspellings that i doubt it. possible though
You should sleep on it. Wait until the "mourning" before you come to a judgment about these guys.
Seeing the argument between Joel and Ellie about Sarah brought tears to my eyes for some reason.
It's the voice acting, man. The way Troy delivers that line "you are treading on some mighty thin ice here" just gives me chills every time I watch it. Of course the writing is great too but the performances were something else for this game.
i teared up too lol this damn game
Was there ever a point where ____sins type of videos made good points while being witty or have they always grasped for straws due to lack of paying attention?
I've heard tell that the earlier CinemaSins videos do make some good points, but those videos were usually about 5 minutes long. They've since expanded to 15 probably due to the average investment in a RUclips video being that long, and so that they seem like they're smarter.
The ad revenue obsession gets the best of us, I'm afraid.
Washu Hakubi Occasionally they catch things like bloopers.
They seem to pay too much attention to small details, that they overlook some big things. Hell, the guy in this video did as well at certain points.
also you should do a Game Theory video
God please no
Game Theory doesn't get enough hate.
Should do a video on the "Why The Star Trek Federation is Fascist " Film Theory piece because I've never wanted to scream at a monitor as bad as when i watched it.

Awesome video man, but in the "best lines from video games" how did you miss "There's a giant worm, AND IT'S EATING THE CITY!"
what's that from?!
I believe it's referring to Gears of War 2. The line is actually, "Anya, it's a giant worm! They're sinking cities with a GIANT WORM!"
That's the one, I remembered it wrong.
Either way, it should definitely have been in there :D
I dunno man, "ICICLE DISASTERRRRR." is really damn good.
I can't believe you missed "Master of unlocking..."
@@lucaomeri8730Where does it say that?

Willy et scientia truely the pinnacle of criticism. Very convincing
Kelerak Not to be rude, but you kinda watched a video that spoils the whole thing...
This is way more well researched, funny and interesting to watch. No wonder it has fewer views.
Might as well comment as this goes on:
0:51 Yeah, I actually would've stopped watching the video around the same time you did.
Oh my gawd that looks horrible! xD
Also holy shit, that molotov did nothing to Joel and the horse!

"Jodie, how's my schedule look for today?"
"You've got a conference and dinner party at the Japanese Embassy regarding wildlife protection."
"Oh, yeah... sorry, but I'll have to cancel that. I'm heading out to save America!"

"I hear its amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!"
- The Patriot AI - Metal Gear Solid 2
"Do you feel like a hero yet?"
- Presumably the Radio Guy or Walker's own delusions - Spec Ops: The Line
"Who else will I have ice cream with?"
- Blond Haired Kid.. I mean Jesse McCartney, Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days
"Monsters? They look like monsters to you?"
- Vincent - Silent Hill 3...D Revelation is a horrible movie, don't watch it.
"Tell the doll I said hello."
- Velka, I mean Velka's crow... turned human... with a British accent - Bloodborne

35:02 Even if he had tried to go cautiously here, it wouldn't have worked since the alley was so damn narrow.
"All box characters are Immune to death"
Sees The Walking Dead Season 1
*Cries a waterfall*
2:08 Yeah, I never really understood this as a sin myself.
5:28 Alright, people. Be honest here. Do any of you guys read the newspaper on the toilet?
10:30 Not surprising to me that I’ve heard this exact same sin in another video just like this. Recycled sins.
Do you think that infected can open doors?
You see, this is part of the reason of why I love Bill. “The enemy of my enemy is my friend.” Maybe that’s also another reason why Frank left Bill. ‘Cause he was jealous. 😏😂
16:27 Yeah. He literally says, “We only take what we have to.”
20:33 Does that look like a bite to you?
Subscribed just for the Cliché speech. I've been preaching the same thing to others and to hear it from another nearly brought me to tears.
