E4: Solo Sailing from St. John to St. Martin on my 27' Sloop Through Lightning and Headwinds

  • I am a 27-year-old female solo sailor beginning my circumnavigation. My boat is a 27 foot sloop named Gecko. Follow me on my journey as I learn about heavy-weather sailing, the trials of being solo, and my adventures in paradise. This week I sail overnight from St. John’s bashing into headwinds to arrive at St. Martin the following evening.

I think people don't expect a girl to be so capable and confident as you are. And not alone on a boat, and not so natural and un-self conscious. Congratulations to your parents as well as to yourself! You had an exceptional upbringing, I hope your route back through the past brings you joy and clarity.

In your closing remarks you said; "the internet is a cruel place". Well, so far I've watched a few episodes out of order and now I've begun watching the whole trip in chronological order and I've come to the conclusion that you are authentic and it's hard to be cruel toward authenticity. What an incredible journey you embarked on. I'm really enjoying living vicariously through you.

i remember the documentary your parents filmed. When you spoke about your family and showed images of you and your family, I remembered why your voice felt familiar. I have spoken about you you and your family often to others when I speak about boat kids and their parents and how kids like you seemed to be so well developed and years ahead of your peers. You were so well spoken. Keep sailing in beauty.

As a new subscriber and an old cruising sailor I want to tell you (if you ever go back and read the comments on your early videos) that you are wonderful, your parents are wonderful, and I am glad you know what you are doing.
So many sailing channels are about people who know little about sailing but they have a boat and they are learning along the way. That's good too, it is entertaining hearing them talk about their kitchen, bedrooms, downstairs, upstairs, bathroom, and more. Most of them are learning how to make better videos (that is important) but not how to handle their boat in different conditions.
I haven't seen anyone demonstrate a practice man overboard drill... yet.
I will be catching up on your videos over the next few days as an armchair sailor remembering the beauty and simplicity of boat life.
It helps that you remind me of my girlfriend at the time, fun, happy, adventurous, and pretty. I should have married her but I was young and stupid and let her go. It may not have worked out if I had though, because I was young and stupid...
Sail on over the horizon! We are sailing with you in spirit...
    James

So happy to have found you by way of Barry the Old Seadog! Came back to the beginning to enjoy your adventures. Thank you for sharing! Wow, you have lived my dreams and I’m so thrilled for you. Btw, you look very much like a girl. I think the 2 boy comments are like you said, people see what they want to see. My husband observed that bc I grew up the sailor and when I started hunting for a boat, the men would only talk with him as I’d walk and check her out, then I’d ask for a trial sail and the sellers would be startled. I didn’t mind tho. Haha! I even had a female Bridgemaster refer to my boat as my husband’s after I made the call. He asked why I don’t correct people, and I said bc it doesn’t really matter. 😂 I look forward to your vids! Peace🙏⛵️

Thank you for the family history lesson. Sharing the photos tells the story of a journey that many people wish they had the courage to take but sadly never do. It explains much about your personal history and zest for life and adventure. I will be at your shoulder vicariously on your quest to circumnavigate. I admire your humor and the what you see is what you get attitude about yourself. No pretense, a rarity in American culture, however with your background you are multi-international culturally. The problem-solving skills are evident and admirable. You are very attractive on many levels. I believe your perception of the people who mistook you for a boy was accurate. They don’t expect to see a solo woman handling all of the challenges of sailing. I may be somewhat advanced in years but I can assure you even with lens corrected eyesight I would not mistake you for a man! Your friend in the Mekong, Russell☮️☯️

It's so nice to watch your films and enjoy your trip. I live in a 27-foot Kylix my self and have done so for more than 2 years. I'm on land now because of some leaks and problems in the keel box. Strange to be on land I have to say, still, better than living in some apartment. You are so cool to just sail with a minimum of equipment. Looking at most people that are out sailing in vessels that are more spaceships than sailboats. Keep on making films. I get in a good mood watching them. Thanx a lot.

I met your Mum and Dad in Fiji in 1992 when I was crewing initially on a yacht called Cables Length (a Cheoy Lee 42) then with new friends on a 28 foot custom boat called Trude. Trude was sailed by Geir from Norway and Anabel his wife from Chile and they had a baby Arne. So, we sometimes would go to Musket Cove resort swimming pool with the babies, and that probably included you!! So happy to have found your vlog and will let my friend Anabel know, she will be excited and I think perhaps your Mum may remember her. Fair winds Holly! xx

When the steward offered to open it for us, I chuckled. Once he got past the plastic cork, he poured and looked at the colour of the wine in a mixture of disbelief and bewilderment. What a great story, you’ve joined my favourites, sv bora bora and sailing wisdom, knowing your story I feel less fear for you as you start this adventure, might sound funny but it’s the truth.
Take good care, cheers from Canada

That's my kinda girl, using a pair of pliers to open the wine. Love how real and down to earth you are and how it transpires onto your videos. No over post prod vids, showing only perfection and what society decided was "cool". Thanks for that breath of fresh air.

You inspire me. I am amazed at your age though, as I would have guessed 18. Lucky you, that a healthy life keeps you young. Oh wait, you still are young. :)
    Keep those adventures coming.
Thanks for sharing a condensed version of your family and how you got your boat.
Cheering from the sidelines, as I too try to organize my life to get another boat and return to sea.
    Thanks for sharing.

It sounds like you had an amazing childhood! We are just starting our sailing adventures as a family and hopefully we can give our kids a similar childhood.

Its refreshing to find a sailer on a yacht these days, the interweb seem full of lifestyle bloggers trying out the live aboard life with scatter cushions, house plants and endless drone footage... I think you would really suit one of those long thin black mustaches as worn by Chinese men of old!!
