      +Sky Avila concept of flat microphone and manipulation in post has been around for a long time. in fact any cabinet emulation you use were capture using equipment which do the same. you've never seen those in market because it's a waste of money. difference is subtle and people process the sound to further morph it anyway. slate can pull it off because their major power lie in marketing and has garnered cult like following.

    As an aspiring mix engineer who loves the sound of (but never has used) high-end mics or preamps, I would love to own this. Any debate about whether this is "true to the original" is missing the point from the perspective of people like me, because if it's close enough we're not going to miss the .01% of difference there is between the emulation and the emulated. You have the ability to access a variety of tones and colors that you always wanted to have (but can't afford). For the life of me, I can't see any reason to buy a vintage mic when I can get this instead.

    Slate is, without a doubt, the best developer out there. Waves, who everyone has something from, doesn't even compare to this any any measurable way...I dare even say, Waves just sounds amateur compared to this. Stunning emulations across the board. I have purchased everything they've put out so far (plug-in wise) and it is worth every god damn penny, and then some. You're a fool if you don't just willfully hand them your money.

    • @glo1168
      @glo1168 8 лет назад

      Waves has gotten away from pure vintage emulation and is moving towards the natural next gen of dsp: quality simplification of the sound crafting process. Making mixing more accessible to the layman with a laptop rather than restricted to those with a certificate in audio engineering.Things you can only do thanks to the digital realm. Rather than recreating processes invented under the limitation of hardware and electronics from 40 years ago. And it's looking beautiful.

    • @glo1168
      @glo1168 8 лет назад

      Nothing wrong with what slate does what they do they do the best, waves is just shifting to serve a different purpose now. use them both.

    • @datamasked623

      +G Ro Tech has made music production easier and more affordable, but let's not say you don't need formal training to be an engineer. It is still a science. You have no future in a production studio if you don't understand physics or electricity. No sustainable one. These are things that require in-depth knowledge and, in extreme cases, may actually save your life. If all we're talking about is people doing everything in a laptop and just winging it, I'll agree.

    • @glo1168
      @glo1168 8 лет назад

      +Eric Pederson you still need training to be a legitimate engineer -- the shift is fewer and fewer people will need or desire paying for those people in the next decade. Or studios in general. Between the awesomeness that is now virtual mics and pres and consoles and tape machines and soon to be monitors I'm preempting (waves is already half-way there w NX), the next gen multi-function, simplified-interface mixing processors, instant robot mastering, the new affordability of interfaces with quality converters and the continued evolution of consumer pcs and daw software. And artists embracing the independent DIY no-label mentality (also meaning no budget). They be very very few clients for the traditional recording industry in the coming years, and the few out there will be snatched up by the established.

    • @datamasked623
      @datamasked623 8 лет назад

      G Ro "you still need training to be a legitimate engineer -- the shift is fewer and fewer people will need or desire paying for those people in the next decade. Or studios in general."
      If they are hobbyists. You need professional engineers to get professional masters. There is more to audio than using your ears and being creative. Technology is never going to replace live instrumentation. Ever. EVER. As long as there are musicians who play instruments there will be recording studios. You can't get the kinds of sounds captured in Led Zeppelin or Jimi Hendrix records with plugins. You need a room...and microphones...etc.
      Will there be FEWER studios? Yeah, probably. Will studios become obsolete due to technological advancements. Nope. That isn't going to happen. Nowadays, you're not paying for the equipment as much as you are for the SOUND of the ROOM(s). You can't make an algorithm that is a convolution of a real room for someone to instantiate on their laptop in their bedroom.
      Technology is a tool, but SOUND doesn't live in computers. It's a physical thing. Therefore, technology will NEVER replace it. And because of this fact, there will always need to be trained people to capture it. Its job security. People will pay no matter what. I guarantee that. Where do you think all these samples these plugins use come from? Software code? It's live recorded.

      +JBarber3d The preamp should be of benefit for something like ARC System...maybe

    • @RizzleK
      @RizzleK 8 лет назад +3

      +RealHomeRecording.com Nah. Arc doesn't use a flat response microphone. Try it with anything other than the bundled mic and you'll know what they're doing there. The software is just compensating for the eq curve of that microphone. I doubt this microphone is as deadly accurate as claimed, but it's probably flat-ish. I guess time will tell as people start getting their hands on these products and posting measurements. Looking at the preamp mockup photos on Sweetwater, we're seeing analog outs. You're still going to be putting this "super-ultra-double-mega-clean-pristine-microphone-machine" through whatever coloration/distortion your current interface suffers or benefits from. I'd think more of it if it had digital outs, but Slate makes decent stuff.

    • @RealHomeRecording
      @RealHomeRecording 8 лет назад +2

      Ryan Kearney Agreed...SPDIF or AES out would been great but add to the cost. Mytek Stereo96 it is for me!

  • @takemetoyourwebsite
    @takemetoyourwebsite 8 лет назад +1

    Very interesting. You can approximate it, but I think you can't really get it exact. We're talking digital vs analog, right? I'm sure that the harmonic and saturation responses are not static and in some ways have unpredictable characteristics, which may even be undetectable by normal measurement. But still, if you're trying to approximate the sound, then it will still sound good. Impressive and useful idea.

  • @tramistfromhell
    @tramistfromhell 8 лет назад +4

    Bottom line is whether the music you record sounds good or not. You can record great music with low quality gear, if the focus is right. Great (name) equipment does not guarantee the best results.
    Precision and clarity often exposes the weakness of the performance, or the concepts behind it. What Slate are doing is brilliant, beyond a doubt, but VMS will never remove the requirement for good approach and best performance. Good Luck out there.

    My question is this: How far will they take this? This seems like a great tool for established producers and recording artists but one thing that could make this great for the little guys is if they expanded the mic library. I wouldn't buy this unless I could use it for Guitars, Vocals, Bass, etc.
    tdlr: I would want this to be a all in one microphone giving emulations for the SM57, SMB2, PR 30 etc. That would really blow the top off the industry!

    Comparing Vintage 251 and ML-1 mics without naming them on 2:10 I can hear difference pretty clear ...First mic - is very flat sounding , seems like it has a bit of compression but it hasn't, vocal very smooth sounding.Second mic - almost the same but some parts of vocal have words which is "jumping out".First - is Vintage 251, Second - is ML-01. Here is a question I went to their website and checked it out I seen the plugins prices but I did not see the microphone that he was referring to and using in his video.

    Several things bother me here..
    1. Most (all?) recording greats talk about committing. Find a good sound and commit, don't leave decisions for later. And even if you don't have a 251, you can get good sound with way cheaper mics.
    2. Outboard!? I have a 1073. One day I'll hopefully have a CL1-B too. For the VMS to work you need a 100% clean signal.. Should I let them collect dust while I use Slate-plugins that emulate them instead? Nooooo way..
    3. A lot of people (myself included) use low latency monitoring systems. I use Console in Apollo. The VMS-system would add the latency of my DAW to the singers headphone-mix, AND prevent me from using higher buffer sizes that the virtual instruments like..
    4. If you work for two years and think that you've nailed a 251-simulation, how come you don't notice crazy plosives in the vocal-recording example? It's not a good recording, and you should really have good recordings when showing off mics.
    I love Slate plugins. I use VBC, VCC and VTM on more or less everything I do. So I have nothing against Slate, but I'm seriously sceptical to this product..
    small print:
    (5. Steven Slate shouldn't be allowed to watch as many american commercials.. ;-) )

    I'm interested in the VMS... but I'm a bit confused about the preamp modeling and how it really works. I have a home studio where I want to record my tracks, but then I want to have my stuff mixed by a professional... does that mean I will lose the benefit of the VMS? I want my tracks to sound amazing from the source, by recording them on great sounding microphones, and then send those raw tracks to a pro so that he can work his magic on them in a mix situation. But if this only records a "flat sound" to my DAW, which is then processed after the fact by the VMS-One (basically like a plug-in), then won't I lose all the benefits of the VMS One preamp emulation when I send off my raw tracks for mixing? In other words, won't my mix person just recieve flat-sounding tracks that can't be processed to sound like U47s, etc, since he likely won't have his own VMS One?
    Or is there simple way to send him raw tracks recorded through the VMS that would sound just like raw tracks recorded through a Telefunken?
    If not... then is this tool only useful for people who plan to record and mix in the same studio? Should I just buy an expensive condenser and a Neve 1073 instead if I want to send tracks somewhere else for processing/mixing?

      @danielbrown2438 5 лет назад

      Very late reply here! But most DAWs give you the ability to commit or "freeze" each track, meaning it renders out the audio and waveform of the track plus any processing. So to keep the VMS benefits, you track into the VMS and then freeze the track. Aside from that, freezing tracks is also really good to free up some CPU if your computer can't handle bigger projects.

    How come on the older demonstrations of the vms there were 2 different sized mics and a 2 channel preamp/more mic models and the most recently published one only shows the large diaphragm mic and single channel desktop style preamp?? Really want this but i liked the idea of the 2 different sized mics and rack preamp. Thanks!

    What the world really needs is tiny little wireless digital audio transmitters that can be picked up directly by bluetooth and wireless network connections to be recorded directly into PC audio recording/editing software. Must be compatible with Windows XP on up. Mail me at 'balkanguy at live dot com' if you need advices on this product idea.

    In the 251 vs VMS comparison there is a clearly audible difference in the midrange and top end. BTW is pretty near one to each other.

    • @indigorosemusic
      @indigorosemusic 8 лет назад

      +World Premiere EG I wouldn't call it clearly audible. It is noticeable though. The s's are slightly harsher on the first one compared to the second to me. But other than that it sounds pretty matched to me.

    • @Leo_Vulkan
      @Leo_Vulkan 8 лет назад

      +Indigo Rose When a difference like this is audible at this level when listened alone, becomes a lot more when mixing. But as I have said, they probably compensate the difference in price ... or that is what they want us to think.

      I don't believe so. I believe you have to use their mic, which is a "flat" reference grade mic, so that you are always starting from a clean uncolored approach, from which you would then add the model of the "mic' you choose.

      +TheCristeas it wil most likely work, but it will still always be colored a little bit by the mic's character.
