Great discussion! I am from Texas and grew up in the 70's and 80's. Both of my parents worked, yet they always cooked homemade meals for us 5 kids. I LOVED it! They mainly used the old Betty Crocker cookbook, so lots of casseroles, etc... My mom was a talented baker and she often made homemade cookies, cakes, and the best meringue pies. We all stayed thin for the most part. I think it's because my parents were very economical with their food buying choices. It was a very rare treat for them to buy us packaged snack, soda, or fast food. It wasn't until the 90's when I noticed my dad was buying lots of chips and sodas...even the diet sodas. This happened because my bargain-shopping parents continued to bargain shop! Have y'all notice how fresh food became more expensive and junk food got very cheap? Also, have you ever noticed if you watch movies from 1982 or older, most of the actors are naturally thin? Then, if you see movies from '83 onward, everyone's rather bloated? That's something more than diet alone, is my theory. So, unfortunately, later my dad passed away from cardio related dementia and then my mother from Parkinson's both, at 79. It has made me question the foods we've eaten all these decades...reexamining the food pyramid, processed oils, grains, etc... My sisters and I have mostly suffered from eating disorders in the 90's (trying to eat "healthy") to later even more food-related allergies in our mid-life years. I've found myself eliminating a lot of foods just to not get gut or sinus issues. I've found that eating beef and liver hits the spot and doesn't make me feel ill. Yay! However, I don't believe I should only eat those things, ultimately. I continue to look at the bigger picture, or the proverbial "man behind the curtain". Just thinking....
simple solution, tax breaks if you can meet the 18-25 military fitness requirement for the male standard 2.4km run in 11:18 minutes, 40 push ups and 70 situps, thats the stanard if you want a 25% tax reduction or what ever % tax the national spent on health. BTW this is for AUS
