This is a couple car review of the Nissan Sentra compact car. What’s new for 2022? A Midnight Edition package for the SR trim, an SV Special Edition package in Canada and in the US an SV All-Weather package. The Sentra comes with Nissan Safety Shield 360 on all trims giving this Sentra the most standard safety features in this class. The Midnight Edition package which we have on our test model includes a black-pained V-motion grille, rear spoiler and rear diffuser, black exterior badging and black 18” wheels. The SV Special Edition package in Canada includes a power sliding glass moonroof, 17” wheels and rear spoiler. In the US, the SV All-Weather package includes a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, remote-engine start system and dual zone automatic temperature control. With an available two-tone colour option and a starting price of $19,498 CAD/ $19,610 USD, it’s not surprising the Sentra is Nissan’s top-selling sedan. The Sentra has a 2L 4-cylinder engine matched to a CVT, 149 horsepower and 146 lb-ft of torque, FWD only. In Canada, a 6-speed manual is available on two trims, the S and SR models, but there is no manual transmission offering in the US. This Nissan Sentra sedan comes standard with a 7” touchscreen, available 8”, Apple Carplay and Android Auto, cloth upholstery, available leatherette, heated front seats, manual driver and passenger seats, remote key-less entry with push botton start and 16” to 18” wheels

My sister got a 2019 Sentra SR and absolutely loves it. She was 27 when she got it and is in the almost exact situation you described: Just got married, got a job that turned into a career, got a raise for the first time, upgraded her car to the Sentra. Great review!

Consumer Reports rated the Corolla’s headlight performance “Fair,” a higher rating than the Sentra’s headlights, which were rated “Poor.”
The Corolla XLE/XSE’s available GPS navigation system has a real-time traffic update feature that plots alternative routes to automatically bypass traffic problems. (Service not available in all areas.) The Sentra’s available navigation system doesn’t offer real-time traffic updates.
Consumer Reports rates the Corolla’s reliability 33 points higher than the Sentra.
J.D. Power ranks Toyota fourth in reliability, above the industry average. With 30 more problems per 100 vehicles, Nissan is ranked 21st.
Consumer Reports’ January 2021 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Nissan vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. Nissan is ranked 13th.
The Corolla will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Corolla will retain 51.42% to 52.65% of its original price after five years, while the Sentra retains 44.43% to 45.88%.

You never know if an injury will occur,
today it may be the last day you are healthy.
Health may not be regained.
Then a safer car would have been a better choice.
Car safety matters are therefore important.

Neck injuries occur with a 46% probability on a Lexus nx ride in a 50km/h (35mph) crash test where a dummy ( doll ) was used.

We just bought a 2023 SR w/Premium Package. As we have retired, we traded down from an extremely dependable Infiniti and chose the less expensive Sentra for 2 reasons: Superior Interior & Exterior Styling and the dependability of Nissan although we were wary of the CVT. We love how it drives and looks with 37.8 mpg after 2500 miles. HOWEVER, fluid leak where engine is mated to transmission. So, we have cautiously mixed feelings after nearly 2 months.
I used to own a 2009 Sentra SE-R Spec V Manual - and i absolutely loved it. It felt bare bones with almost no tech, but it was very reliable and fun. Ended up being a write-off in a winter crash. But i can't wait to drive this one in a manual (albeit it has a smaller engine than my original Sentra) and see how it feels!
I had the Sentra as a rental for a few days and the car has improved a lot versus the last generation. It is comfy, drives sporty and the interior materials are decent. I would lease one if I was in the market for a compact car. The only thing is that we don't know about the CVT long-term reliability yet.
I have the 21'SR Premium in the blue/black combo which looks great. I too was a little wary of the CVT but I actually think it drives very well and is quite smooth. I will admit it isnt the fastest off the mark but it certainly has more than enough for most roads that you will likely drive this on. I like that you have the ECO mode and also the "hidden sport mode" - little button under the shift knob, that keeps the revs up a little higher. Its one of the most comfortable cars I've driven but can be a little harsh over bumps due mainly to the low profile 18inch rims. On the whole I think its a great buy, very econmic and looks the part for the money. Sure its not on par with a Mazda but in the same spec you'll pay a lot more for the Mazda too.
I owned a Sentra in the 80s and it was a great car...not much on power but super reliable.
I have to think this one will perform well, I think CVT's are not as bad as they are made out to be. Its more popular for people to trash them than to accept them as capable. That's the general impression I have.
Have you driven a CVT? We drove an accord CVT then the 10 speed auto back to back. Night and day difference. It was for my wife, she’s not big on cars, just wanted something sporty enough and quick. I liked the CVT because of the price, but we both noticed a huge difference in driving impressions between the two. Also Nissan isn’t what it used to be. We had an early 90s Nissan, solid, my dads newer Nissan, nothing but issues. Nissan also had a huge lawsuit due to their CVTs failing.
CVT not reliable. Also, does not drive as well as a car with automatic transmission
CVT is tolerable if you just want to get from A to B without drama --- but big $$$$ failures at low mileages are not tolerable & so I won't consider a Nissan CVT
I am so happy that you review the full spectrum of vehicles. My daughter lives in Vancouver, is studying at UBC and will be working soon. She watched the review and thinks its a real toss up - the Sentra, the Kicks or the Mazda 3. Its nice to know that, even in an SUV dominated world, there are some very good, well rounded, efficient and tech-savvy cars still available.
We love reviewing cars, there are a lot of options out there. Unfortunately, many brands are focusing on what sells, SUVs.

Great review guy’s. Took one for a test drive and then the Mazda 3. That CVT is terrible and a deal breaker. No car is perfect but the Mazda was so much better. Regardless can’t get either for months in Alberta. Thanks
Corolla may not be as attractive ( hatch is the exception) but a better more reliable car at similar price point, imo
Nissan makes some good looking cars now. They can have good value used compared to Mazda and Toyota if you can look past the CVT, but driving in the city with it can be painful.
The Sentra has the 6 speed manual SR. Civic, Corolla, Elantra all have CVT or IVT and sorry to disappoint you are better than the Mazda 3.......
I called my local dealer and the only car they had coming in was a SR with the manual so I put my name down for it. Because people don't want manuals they made the deal for Just MSRP plus tax which shocked me with all the crazy markups since the chip shortage started.
@@raptuous I currently own a 2022 Sentra SR manual, good vehicle so far and handling is very good and the Multi link rear suspension handles roads imperfections very well. The manual throws are short and crisp and the clutch is good. The only downside so far is the gas consumption, which is 10L/100km into he city, but the CVT Sentra will probably be 8.0L/100km.......

I find nissans seats some of the most comfortable out there.
I like the heavier steering of the nissans in comparison to the corolla we had very light my opinion.
Great review. I just picked up a 2022 sr with the 6 speed manual. One of my biggest dislikes with it so far is the lack of visibility through the back window. Other then that it's a great car so far.
If Nissan added a Nismo trim like the previous generation offered at around 190hp-200hp, this would give the Civic Si a run for its money. Like Zack, I'm also irritated when people say ATM machine, VIN number, LCD display, etc.
I was such a hardcore car guy until I got my first suv- a Ford Flex. A second flex and bronco sport badlands later and I Haven’t looked back
My last sedan was my 08 Sebring which contrary to opinions was an excellent car for me. Brakes and tires in over 300k kms. That was it.
But now with neck issues, and getting older I can’t even get into sedans comfortably. But I still like the look. My neighbour has a caddy CTS and I felt like a sardine in that. But what a nice car.

Drove a 2019 Sentra as a rental and it drove fine on the highway. Was able to pass just fine and the CVT was also fine, and I’ve been driving a ‘04 Passat with an automatic for 5 years now. This Sentra looks great, especially the back, big improvement compared to the previous generation.
Nice vehicle for the price point, folk leary of the CVT but if you keep up with the maintenance schedule and get that fluid changed every 4 or 5 oil changes there shouldn't be a problem, your reviews are always on point.
My eyes popped when Andrea said the expected resale value was only 44%. The Civic and Corolla are in the 60s, and the Korean brands are in the 50s! Just goes to show how poor brand reputation can absolutely ruin the demand for an overall decent car.
Yup, resale value is primarily a popularity contest.
Not sure about her info, but the Sentra resale value depending on trim is on par with Elantra, Corolla, Forte.....

If I get a good car resale value is not a primary concern. If I get a car that I can’t wait to get rid of, it’s huge. I currently own a 2007 Hyundai Sonata that I bought new. It has been by far the most reliable, enjoyable vehicle that I have ever had the pleasure of owning. I also own a 2018 Honda CR-V which I hate. My two previous Honda products were nothing to write home about either. Fortunately the resale value is so good on Honda’s that I won’t take a bath when I dump this miserable piece of crap.
Unfortunately, Nissan is still trying to get rid of the CVT failure reputation they got in the mid-2010’s. They are getting better but it goes to show how much a company’s past can affect the present
These have caught my eye on the road recently. Looks so different than the older sentras. I think a new name would help with the perception of these cars like kia did with the optima/k5.
Rent an SV a year and a half ago. Great on gaz, 5.5 l./100km on highway . Not a single problem. Will buy it in 2 years for sure.

Jatco CVT is poison! … the absolute worst … dealers have them by the dozens in stock as the reliability of these are notoriously poor!!! This car should have a nice 6 or 8 speed automatic option and it would sell like hotcakes …
When I met my Wife, she drove a brand new ‘92 Nissan Sentra ‘Classic’. This does not look ANYTHING like her econo-box cheap disposable compact car. And with that American quilted premium interior, it looks as nice (if not better) than the Cashmere Nappa leathered (with contrast piping) interior of my past 2001 E38 7-series (albeit not of same quality, feel, smell, etc.). Still… High praise, nonetheless. Well done Nissan! Thanks for the video.

Definitely not the one to beat. The Mazda3 and even the new Civic are lightyears ahead of the Sentra. The last "great" Sentra was an 06 SER.

drop the cvt period, make a solid automatic and keep offering the manuals. Offer a plug in hybrid too.
Civic, Corolla, Elantra, Forte havent dropped the CVT or IVT, why should Nissan? Some folks want gas consumption vehicles.........
Nissan is doing impressive revisions to this car, it looks so great , sharp features and that price is targeting what used to be the Civic market.

I drove Datsun's back when I was younger (new and used) but never caught on to Nissan. But this is nice. I love the tan leather interior, Wow!! As to the CVT, by partner has one in our new Subie and its great. I think the electronic controls make all the difference. Don't fear CVT.
I agree, some CVT's are much better than others. The reliability and quality scores of this Sentra are excellent.
The Mazda 3 is the most elegant and the Sentra is the most sporty looking in the whole compact car market.
sporty goes to the elantra. this strikes a nice balance between luxury and sporty.
Mazda design is outdated and infotainment is lame, no touchscreen. From 2014 to present even with a minor refresh in 2019 Mazda 3 needs a redesign hopefully in 2023 or 2024 model year.....

What have they done to improve their CVTs?
For me I’m looking at comfort, gas mileage, and easy ingress and egress . I don’t need sporty. This has two of those, if I can get in and out I would consider it.
I find this Sentra a very interesting proposition. Great looks and well appointed, hard to ask for more.

Zack, CVT transmission. I'm the same with ABS brakes. The B covers the word brakes.
the jetta has the best transmission in the class and the 8 speed is super quiet and the best mileage
one of the things that would hold me back on this is just the resale options I don't think many people would want a sentra even on a really good deal /: I would have to go with a one of the other competitors options that are more popular or a 3-5 year old civic
Saying Cvt transmission is like saying Hot water heater.
Glad to hear Nissan still offers a manual… but it’s sad almost no one knows how to operate one anymore and are saddled with a cvt instead 😢
Lazy folks who love convenience. 6 speed manual is tricky at first to learn, but pays off down the line......

I just bought a '24 Mazda3. I LOVE the car, but I can't believe I missed the point that you can get a Sentra in a manual. I assumed it was CVT across the board - I might have considered going for one of these if I knew earlier!
It looks amazing and much better than the civic's rear end but unfortunately I just don't trust Nissan's CVT yet.
If you dont trust the CVT, buy the SR or base S with 6 speed manual......

Who couldn’t love to watch you 2, amazing chemistry well we should help as you are married 😅 Great review as always I think Nissan did a very good job with this generation Sentra, especially in the SV with the quilted leather brown seats, which I know Zack is Not partial too LOL, but this SR does look very nice with the two-tone. One thing that I don’t understand and is unacceptable from Nissan is the incandescent rear tail lights on this Sentra, as well as the up to $40k Altima. All of their competitors have very nice LED tail lights, and the last generation Sentra had LED tail lights, it’s such a strange omission….🤔
Another great review. Sentra used to be a competitive compact car back in the 90s with their B13 and B14 generations. Its not until the current generation before Nissan is able to turnaround this important franchise. Carlos Ghosn era have screwed up Sentra up big time. On the other hand; Mazda3, Impreza, Elantra and Forte have made great strides. If Nissan really wants to bring Sentra upmarket, they should have offered a sporty hatchback as with Civic, Mazda3, Corolla and Forte5 did. They could do it with what Pulsar used to offer elsewhere. While American is abandoning compacts, Nissan is able to gain from what those owners have lost when its time to replace the aging Cruze, Focus and Dart from a decade ago.
Nice car , but I would only consider it if it came with AWD, living in the Kootenay area is a must.

Most manufacturers now have CVTs, maybe Mazda 3 might be the one for you

Nice vehicle but ONLY a 3 year, 60,000 km warranty?? Competition warranties: Hyundai/Kia 5 year, 100,000 km, Mazda 5 year power train, unlimited mileage, I would purchase those just for peace of mind.
I would like to own one but aside of the CVT negativity, i am driving a 2012 Corolla with 179k miles. I wish there was a HISTORY like Toyota's durability. But of course Toyota even used with low miles is SUPER EXPENSIVE. Tough call to give Nissan a try....
I can quite honestly due away with screens auto stop and start at lights, electric shift and push button start. For one when my car is off i can roll down my windows without starting my car just by turning the key. I wish someone would make a video proving to me that i can do that with the push button start like i keep hearing about but i haven't found one yet. I have spoken to a few friends with 3 year older sentras who told me that their CVTs gave them issues. Perhaps those issues are really from the the heavy footed drivers. To which i am not
my daughter is going to be in the market for a vehicle and this would really fit the bill...easy on gas..safe and nice looking...will advise her to check one out...thanks for a great review..enjoy🙂
I got a quote for a premium trim sentra with two tone white black paint from a dealership in Montreal. The total after taxes and all fees was around 35k $. The 5 years/ 80k warranty drives that number over 37k $.
The car looks great and all, but I don't think this is a reasonable price for an average car that may depreciate by over 50% in the next 2 years.
No way in hell I'm paying almost 40k for a Sentra

I have a 2017 SR Turbo and I did a 2022 test drive, I didn't like it. The car is very slow. This new Sentra is beautiful but needs turbo to compete with Civic, Mazda, Elantra etc.
What a nice looking car. How does this Sentra compare to the 2022 Elantra w the DCT and is it quieter on the highway? Is it quicker than the Elantra to 100
my kona with the 1.6L turbo and dct will do 0-60 in 6.7 seconds. so , i expect the elantra/ forte versions to match it. the sentra isn't anywhere close to that. Plus , the korean cars have i.r.s. and a much longer vehicle and powertrain warranty.

A compact fits my lifestyle perfect but unfortunately I wanted a Sentra but went with a Mazda 3 turbo. It just didn't have enough zoom that I wanted.

14:37 Your mpg is for the USA. In Canada we use the Imperial gallon, which is a little larger than in the US.
6L/100km is 47 mpg in the imperial gallon. And 8L/100km is 35 mpg in Canada, for the same reason. As you can notice, the numbers are very different.

@@Motormouth... Yes I know, I'm Canadian. But when we talk gallon we should use the imperial one or otherwise specify that it is the US gallon. I'm over 60 years old, and people my age often refer to fuel economy in mpg, which for us is the imperial one.

How can you review a compact, without mentioning MPG? Why else would anyone want a compact?
I once owned a 98 sentra. Best car I ever owned. I now have a 2019 sentra sr and it's the last one I'll ever own. Absolute lemon. From the start it's had electrical problems that the dealership has been unable to fix. Also the cvt transmission is junk. It drives fine until you go up a hill. It's unable to keep interstate speed limit and go up moderate Tennessee hills where it surges and looses power, over and over again. Nissan has actually laughed at me for bringing the CVT problems to their attention.

@@alvinsimba734 the electrical problems are in the stereo and the steering wheel controls. The dealership fixed the steering wheel controls but not the stereo. The volume knob has never worked correctly. You have to change the volume by using the volume control on the steering wheel. The stereo will also just come on when the car detects a key nearby. This means sometimes, all you do is walk up to the car and the radio starts playing. It will also lose the Bluetooth connection with your phone for no obvious reason. Does that all the time. Doesn't matter which phone is connected either.
Going up hills (not steep ones either) on the interstate after the car is warmed up good is when it looses power. It'll loose power and then regain it again and again. This makes the car lurch down the road. All you can do is slow down substantially so it stops or take it out of overdrive. Aggravating to say the least

It needs a turbo engine option. The old 1.6T in Sentra nismo or the new 1.5 vcturbo paired with the manual gearbox would be great.
No need for Turbo, City streets aint for racing. 150hp is good enough especially in a 6 speed manual......

I test drove the 2021 Sentra, Corolla, and Mazda3 and I bought the Corolla XLE. It was superior in every way and I don't regret it at all.
Kinda weird how the Corolla resale value has dropped recently and the Forte, Elantra even the Sentra has risen. Maybe Toyota supply in demand is the issue......

Base model Honda Civic cost the same as the SR Sentra with a manual. I think I'd rather go with the Sentra.

It's pretty much the same, use Krown or Rust Check and you are done!

Nissan is making a huge mistake, by NOT offering EMBEDDED NAVIGHATION. Many drivers do NOT want to bother, nor trust, using Google Maps. I would purchase this car IF it had embedded navigation.
Consumer Reports is now ranking the Sentra at the bottom for small cars when it comes to reliability....disappointing, wanted to get one.

I just bought my daughter an LE corolla, looked at Sentras and fortes…fortes were nice and the Sentra was to expensive for what it is….I got the best deal on the corolla and that’s why I went with it…but to I really wanted a civic..they had them priced so high I didn’t even look at them..base civics were going for high 20’s low 30’s. I was like Honda can suck a big fat fatty before I pay that much for a civic….
The new Civic is my choice.
You can’t touch this car for 22.5k in the states. Not where I live ……not in this trim any way
So here's the list: transmission sucks. The VDC system hurts the car and driving experience. THE GAS MILEAGE IS WORST THAN MY 20 YEAR OLD SUBARU.

@@guavaraj1088 CVT isn't horrible like previous Sentra from 2019 and earlier. But the 6 speed manual Sentra is an different animal, unfortunately it's only available in Canada......

@@guavaraj1088 More demand in Canada and also Mexico for 6 speed manual Sentra. Americans want convenience and not shifting gears. But if you drive a Sentra with a 6 speed tranny, you will have a different prospective on the Sentra.......
