    The scene in Sue Ann's bedroom was MADE by the fact that everyone kept looking up, fixing their hair, and straightening their clothes, without us ever being SHOWN anything. Whatever they paid the writers on that series, it wasn't enough.

      Only Ted admired himself in SueAnne’s mirrored ceiling while the others were horrified by what it implied about SueAnne. Only Ted was vain and socially vacuous enough to use the mirror to adjust his tie and put his hat ON(!) - indoors in a sick room - in front of his colleagues. Giving Betty White the role of Sue Ann Nivens was the most brilliant piece of casting in television history, because it was as if her entire career prior to the Mary Tyler Moore Show was a setup that character paid off. I don't think it can possibly be as funny for younger people now as it was at the time, because it was such a complete revelation. I'm sure it's still funny, but it lacks the extra punch it got from the gasp you let out at seeing someone who'd seemed like the literal embodiment of sweetness and light serving pure, delicious evil.

    • @jcortese3300
      @jcortese3300 3 года назад +7

      IIRC, they had discussed the casting for that role when the show was created, and were saying to each other, "We have to get someone who isn't just sweet -- sickeningly sweet. Someone like Betty White." So they finally concluded they should just hire her.

Season 4's "The Lars Affair" set up Phyllis and Sue Ann as foils, but Sue Ann began to adopt more of Phyllis' brittleness through Season 5 while still evolving into her own character. Really excellent advice and execution.

    She has played so many roles in her 80 years of television. ( not an exaggeration. the consistent work really began in 1949) I think this role represented her best work.

    • @johndipinto8816
      @johndipinto8816 2 года назад +3

      This role really turned her acting career around - she had done some sitcoms in the 1950's (and was nominated for an Emmy in 1951) but during the 60's she was mostly appearing on TV as herself in host or spokesperson-type gigs, or on game shows as a celebrity contestant. She was still in the public eye - I remember seeing her hosting the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade shows with Lone Greene - but her TV acting was limited to a few guest spots here and there throughout the decade. When she got the part of Sue Ann in 1973 she really ran with it and proved what a terrific actress she was, and after that she never stopped getting roles. AND she was Emmy-nominated 20 more times, and won 5 of them.
