One of the most talented guitar player around metal scene......his technique is unique, really a master of metal.....the right man to be in charge of the heavy sound of Stratovarius
I agree, I've been playing over 30 years and Mathias' playing on the last 3 Stratovarius albums is killer, he constructs such interesting solos. Of course Petrucci et all are good, but the solos this guy comes up with...superb.
The last two guys: did you ever hear an intelligent player or petrucci himself doing any rankings who is better? No and you know why? They know better than how much and discipline it takes to play on this level. Btw Matias can play Sx and Dt No need for comparison, they space enough for all great players.
Playing really fast is an accomplishment. Playing really fast while having each and every note sound individual and clean rather than notes running into each other? That's the mark of a true master and Matias is a true master. If this guy gives lessons, he'd be the kind of teacher to listen and hear every word he says.
You can definitely tell tell that he played classical guitar for many years. His neo-classical sensibilities and technical work ethic became part of his DNA.
One of the best metal guitarist out there. I love his technique, his tone, is so clear and smooth, also he plays so clean, is amazing. Also is a great producer!! I love the production and mix of the latest Stratovarius records.
Astounding talent!!! Truly pure and unapologetic virtuosity, and the way he composes the licks and shreds is just totally unique blend of classical approach and modern techniques And, if Jens Johansson gave him a nickname "Wunderkind" that really says something of his talent!!! All the praise is just 100% deserved, so all the best to Matias and keep on shredding
I came here to find out why he's so underrated, like this is one of the best guys I've ever seen. But my question is: why did the accident stop him from playing classical guitar but not electric? He said it was his left hand, right? The left hand index finger does less on classical than the style of shredding he does. It's usually just barring or holding down one note while the right hand does all the fancy stuff with the pinky and ring finger in terms of melody.
Tulta ja tulikiweä. Jos enkku sujuu, Rick Beato RUclips'ssa tekee loistawia teoriawideoita etupäässä asteikoista ja JazZ kuvioista, mutta myös elokuwamusiikista ymsyms. ( Everything Music, Rick Beato )
He is definitely more proficient than Tolkki on guitar. In my opinion he is on another level. You can compare his live performances with Tolkki's performances and is clear that Matias plays way cleaner and his solos are way more well composed than Tolkki's. However Tolkki wrote the classic Stratovarius songs and albums and most people tend to like the old stuff more than the new albums.
I like Matias as well, but his problem, IMO, is his over the top John Petrucci influence. You can hear it in his solos, and I absolutely hate Petrucci. Tolkki, sure, his solos are more simplistic and Yngwie-ish at times, but he isn't influenced by Petrucci and that's what matters to me most. i've tried learning the solo to My Eternal Dream and thats goddamn insane. Hunting high and low? Piece of cake, and that's what makes Tolkki's solos special. They aren't all insane speed show off my technique kinda stuff.
I apologize in advance for the the length of this post... lol He's also SO much more diverse of a player and writer... don't worry, I still love the Pre-Matias era (let's be honest... Pre-"Self-Title" era... lol) it wasn't particularly innovative. However, they made up for that by just the sheer power and beauty with an EPIC sound! On a technical basis, the songs weren't all THAT dissimilar to each other. The evangelic quality to their work WAS amazing, which made them still quite lovable! Tolkki can shred like mad and create damn good melodies. The atmosphere of his playing is phenomenal, but unchanging, and not really pushing boundaries anymore... it's like he DESPERATELY wants to be Yngwie lol. Matias has a much more expansive palette. He can riff, he can jam, he can be heavy or melodic, he can maintain solid and simple phrases as is common in power metal, or play licks that seem on par with a lot of technical, and dare I say, progressive metal groups....especially newer ones. .Oh! ...and he could face-off against Tolkki and shred without even breaking a sweat... XD Unlike Tolkki, his playing and writing actually evolves! Every project or band of Tolkki since his departure, is seemingly still trying to be classic Stratovarius... haha
I wonder what specs this guitar has I mean scale length and radius.. it looks like it is so easy to play.. is it because of drop C or guitar strings gauge.. Just curious..
The scale length is 25.5" and fretboard radius 16". So nothing out of the ordinary with those specs. We're happy that he has chosen our guitars as his main tools in studio and on stage. Certainly it helps a musician when the guitar is made for his exact wishes, and that it's well built and expertly set up - but the main factor in that Matias' playing looks so easy is probably simply because of his extraordinary technique. :-)
I love Matias, he have a very nice style and I love that he is in Stratovarius and bring a different sound to the band along with Rolf... They take Strato to the next level without Tolkki.
You are extremely talented, and enjoyed your interview that I have not seen in awhile, can't wait to see you all soon!!!
🙏

I like Matias. In my opinion, he is better than Tolkki at some parts, guitar sound, technique and his appearance.
