Hi, really liking your playing and tone here! What made you drift towards the classic EMG 81 and 85 pickups? I really like those pickups even though they are getting slack in the anti-active realm of modern progressive metal.
Joonas Kuusisto funny...I have a friend who is a bass player and has exactly the same name ;) about emg’s: it’s universal, easy to repair, takes away the capasitance problems with long cable (because of the buffer and active circuit). Honestly I think it’s a ”pretty ok” mic and there’s better ones around but when you tour all the time and things get broken sometimes, you want to have an easy solution.
That's very interesting, I have never thought about the capacitance problem! I have also regarded those pickups as industry standard: silent, okay sounding, easy to replace. The "sterile sound" can be used as an tone canvas and they absolutely nail the melancholic scandinavian melodeath sound. Kuusisto is surprisingly common surname but I happen to be a bedroom guitarist instead of a bassist :D I adore your guitar work in Stratovarius (Winter Skies solo is a masterpiece) and time to time I rewatch videos on this channel to gain some practice motivation

Aleksa Stamenkovic yes it does something! But most of the modern interfaces has pretty decent hi-z inputs nowadays. I recorded last Strato record with Axefx as di-preamp ;)

How do you make your tone so thick and dark? It sounds terrifying and it's in drop C
Is it in drop D?
i think is Drop C, Strato doesn't play in standard tuning, they played in D# standard before, but now the new songs usually are in Drop C
