  • Learn how to play the Charlie Brown theme song 'Linus & Lucy' on the piano in this lesson with Pianote's Nate Bosch.
"Linus and Lucy" is a popular instrumental jazz piece written by American jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi. The song was originally released on Guaraldi's album Jazz Impressions of A Boy Named Charlie Brown. It gained its greatest exposure as part of the Charlie Brown Christmas soundtrack the following year and is one of the most recognizable pieces by Guaraldi. We just love it!
Original Charlie Brown theme song can be heard here:

Alright so Ive noticed alot of people get frustrated with playing this song. I just bought my first piano about a month ago and being this has always been my favorite piano piece ever, I had to learn it first... yes I play other instruments but this is a unique style of playing for me as it may be for some of the frustrated folks out there regargless. This is a great instruction ^ but Ive noticed theres 2 ways of thinking when playing a piece like this. people who can play the base notes (left hand) and after a while not think about it and then they just throw the treble end (right hand) on top and bam they can play it. the other way of analyzing the piece is by picking every single movement apart that is made by both hands. essentially you will notice that there are notes that are played at the same time with right and left hand and then there are parts where they are not or "staggered" if you will. you need to be able to separate that in your brain slowly so that you can stop either hand from doing the wrong thing when you try to put them together. that is what makes it akward to play. but if you slow the piece down about 75% speed maybe even more, you can focus on every individual movement both hands make. once you can play it slow, practice. and the speed will come easily. I learned it in about a weeks worth of time and I can play it just like him ^. you can too. Slow is smooth smooth is fast and dont give up!

This layout is very different from the usual Pianote Layout. I prefer seeing the keyboard with the notes and chords written out on the screen. That format is very helpful when trying to learn a new song. It seems that your web address is also different.

A Flat/G Sharp, D Sharp/E Flat, the next up G Sharp (repeat once more)
      A Flat/G Sharp, D Sharp/E Flat, F.
In case you don't know what positions these are in, I'll put it like this:
The black keys look like this:
      123 45 678
White keys look like this (Although I shouldn't be modeling it like this because I'm replacing actual notes with these model numbers when the notes are also letters)
      ABCD|EFG|HIJK
      so the model is
      1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
      A B C D E F G H I J K
      Play 3 5 7, 3 5 7
      3 5 H 3 5 H
This probably could have been a lot easier to explain, but I'm terrible at explaining to begin with. I hope that you found clarification in this anyways.

Nice! so yes the bass line does what you show as the intro but when he begins the melody the bass line is played somewhat differently...hard to explain but its not exactly the same as the intro which is why some would have a hard time playing it. if done the way its actually played its not that hard.

the easy way to play this song, at parts like the right hand plays a flat b flat c c bflat a flat,,, play the left hand in unison rhythm, (and cut out a few bass notes,,,),,,, and then go back to the intro left hand, ambidextrous is good practice but it is more fun to play it, ,,,,the way i do it, i think it is more syncopated

  • @awesomemanspiff

Man I love this song! Wish I was good enough to play it spent 4 years of my life and can never get past the opening cause I have no rhythm and can't put the two hands together. It would make my dad and grandpa so happy if I could play this. But I'm a fucking failure who can't do anything. And I actually hoped I had a talent for piano. But I guess that's just what it was. Hope. Awesome tutorial though.

    • @pharnick
      @pharnick 6 лет назад +1

Stick with it. It takes a while. Instead of saying "I can't play it", say "I can't play it - YET!" Because you CAN play it, you just need more time.
Focus on the left hand for a long, long time. Get it to thepoint that your left hand can play it without thinking.
You can't do both hands until this happens, and it takes a LONG time.
Trust me, I spent the time - YEARs, actually - and can now play it. SO CAN YOU!!!
