Good for Prisoner producers and writers for tackling a very sensitive, emotionally charged, and important topic at a time when it wasn't easy to address. The subject of the racist treatment of the Australian Aboriginals by the European settlers is controversial and hard hitting, and is still a sensitive subject to this day. Notice how they had the show's main antagonist, Joan Ferguson, express some sympathy and understanding towards Sarah... this speaks volumes and is a powerful statement that they were trying to get across to the viewers in what appears to be efforts to help mitigate any prejudice. Prisoner always attempted to cover a whole spectrum of important social issues and "educate" and open the minds of the viewers. It was a great show.
They have every right to be angry. The aboriginals were not even recognised as human beings in Australia till approximately the 60's. They are some of the most gentle, beautiful, lovely people I have ever known. I consider it an honor to have met and known those I have. They value beauty and are sharing good people. They see what matters.

Just shows what little bubbles some people live in. They see Prisoner as "escapism TV" and don't want to be reminded of inconvenient, uncomfortable issues in society. I for one am glad the producers ran with this story
This material was probably edgy in Australia, even at that time. Australia hadn't even formally apologised to the stolen generation. That didn't happen for many years after this.
I don't know- I think the Prisoner writers were trying to be ironic about the Aboriginies being the original Australians ...whilst also being completely blatant about how the Australians act towards them and how they are intolerant towards each other... largely to do with completely differing upbringings in their own societies. I personally see that as a problem, because of the refusal to integrate. But that will never happen- in any two completely different societies (I refuse to use the demeaning description of 'culture'), or civilisations, coz the one huge difference that sticks out like a sore thumb is the word 'civilised', and, sadly, the war is always to do with outdated customs that should have died a death many centuries ago, up against current civilisation. Unfortunately, a person in today's world cannot explain current living to a person hundreds of years ago. They still believe in hell to anyone that doesn't believe in their ficticious god for goodness sake...
Lamp Shade God will still be utterly real for infinity just as He was ever real before.. And a lot of people do bad things in His name which I don't agree with.. I just can't stand by and watch somebody flippantly call Our Saviour fictitious..
I believe in love, truth, being gratious, being polite, kindness, generosity for no reward, never being responsible for the death of another living being, respect, and I don't stand for arrogance or hatred towards others that do not agree with you. Live good, and never, never, never give hate to someone who doesn't believe in worshipping whatever it is you worship if they simply believe in the things I just mentioned above. Not everyone needs a belief in 'God'. I have always believed that to be a great person, you just believe in yourself, and try hard to every day. Often I feel low- but I never sway from wanting to be the best I can and good. That is a stay. It is wrong to condemn someone who doesn't agree with your belief in this.
Without sounding harsh, the term “Aborigines” is no longer accepted. I am of Aboriginal descent and the issues in Australia are far deeper than just cultural differences. To the non Aussies out there and the many who appear to have only read history books, Spider and Sarah are the worst examples of how we really are . I don't know anyone who gives a damn about peoples' colour or ethnicity as long as you get along okay. If you are black, asian, european, white or bloody purple, if you don't treat me well I won't like you. Okay, if you're purple I may have issues,
I'm really glad that they showed this kind of racism- coz it's extremely rare to see any kind of TV programme or documentary or anything that displays the appalling proof that other nationalities are racist towards us- us meaning white- and that can be Australian, English, American, Scottish etc etc etc. But, oh no- only people of dark skin can suffer the assault of racism. Well, that is absolutely not true 100%. I first witnessed racism way back when I was about 9 or 10 years old. Me and my family lived on a street in England where lots of Pakistanis and Bangaledeshis moved in. They were all related to each other (several generations of the same family bought houses next door to each other) and used to shout racist abuse at us in the street- they even got their children involved- children that me and my sister used to regard as 'friends' coz we all used to play out in the street together after school. These kids obviously were brainwashed by their own parents to be poisonous towards us, and WE didn't understand- we were just kids!! But the things they said....'white ice cream' was one of the most tame insults that the youngest of their families used to shout at us.
You are fucking lying and it didn't happen! It's always racist white people who invent stories of facing 'racism' from ethnic minorities. You are only fabricating the story to strengthen your racial hatred towards ethnic minorities. When ethnic minorities speak out against racism and white supremacy, you hate it because you know it takes away your power to divide and rule. That woman is not from a different nationality as you implied, she is an indigenous Australian otherwise known as an aborigine. Get your facts right. The real Australians are black. This Aboriginie woman is hurling abuse out of anger. The anger stems from the fact White people stole her land, took away her rights, massacred her own people and denied her privileges. Those white ladies are hurling abuse out of ignorance and are using their white supremacy status to make her feel threatened. Neither what they are doing is right, but I can understand why the Aboriginie woman is angry.
robb e Shut up you sad weirdo. There's nothing wrong having Spider and West saying racist things. This is a prison not Mary Poppings. If you such a puss then don't watch a prison show
When I watch Joan with kids I can't help but think she would be a good governor in a juvenile female prison, similar to Jim Fletcher going as governor of a juvenile male prison.
Racism and bigotry will always be around. It's good to talk about it. Some people think if they don't talk about it it doesn't exist? Sorry, it's a fact of life.
Australian racism head on? Are we mean't to be surprised? - she's oppressed by the majority thats why she lashes out. On the other hand - she could do with a prolonged stay in prison. Its not a black and white issue
My sister's best friend was aboriginal. She and her brothers had heaps of friends in our suburb and their dad coached the local soccer team. That was way before Prisoner was on, so pull your heads in with all this racist crap. That's everywhere, in every country and against all races and religions. Many people hate Jewish people and SURPRISE, SURPRISE, even white people.
16.36 That is one of the few times I like Rodney. He is a creep absolutely, but at least he started to stand up for himself and stop beating Kate's doormat
I think it’s great they finally have a black character but boy is it obvious the writers don’t know how to write a black female character or storyline. And the racism is out of control but of its time.

16:59 is Anne throwing her voice or dodgy editing??

🤣
I miss Lisa's platinum blonde hair. That was hot! This black haircut makes her look like a guy. lol
It was a different Actor playing Lisa when Lisa had Platinum hair.
Ah, I was starting to warm to Spider until she revealed herself as a nasty racist
But Sarah is a sweetheart.
Really. So Sarah hasn’t come in skating all white people.
The look on Stout's face @ 30:15 lmao
Neither what they are doing is right, but I can understand why the Aboriginie woman is angry.
spider's racism is harsh reality..... Sarah's racism is as well, so sad!!
robb e Shut up you sad weirdo. There's nothing wrong having Spider and West saying racist things. This is a prison not Mary Poppings. If you such a puss then don't watch a prison show
Is Joan that stupid to talk about the illegal gambling just outside the solitary doors where West could hear?
I thought I might be the ONLY 1 thinking this😑, so thanks😊
I bet the women win the trust and friendship of Sarah.
nice one west more plz
Joan feels sorry for kid 😔
What happened to the Closed Captions? They were on here before.
Poor Paula got hit in.the arm.with a snooker ball for real. And it was painful too.
Yeh you could tell by her expression, she wasn't acting.
joan loved , kids , she was far from racist and loved animals, she wasnt all bad.
It was only inmates, Reynolds & Meg Morris she thought were scum
When I watch Joan with kids I can't help but think she would be a good governor in a juvenile female prison, similar to Jim Fletcher going as governor of a juvenile male prison.
Racism and bigotry will always be around. It's good to talk about it. Some people think if they don't talk about it it doesn't exist? Sorry, it's a fact of life.
There's not or is very very less Racism in Eastern and Arab nations compared to West.
Yup, and some people think that just because they don’t see it, it doesn’t exist. There’s some very good examples of this in other comments.
That is why different types of people should just be neighbors, not roommates.
@@benharis1956 Bull 💩
Geez, I think Sarah has some anger issues lol
Solitary for the duration I say
Unless I misheard, Lester’s address was in Sydney. So how on earth did the assassin get there first?
Very intelligent question. I live in Sydney and have been to Melbourne. It's not exactly down the road.
She borrowed Marie winters helicopter
Thomas Gilmour the Crime boss has other Cronies, working for him there. That's how.
Yes, same!! That puzzled me too!
@@benharis1956 but it literally says the assassin killed Lester. So the assassin would have had to travel her ass ALL THE WAY to SYDNEY🤦🏻♀️😳😆
Alice is the worst Top Dog. I like the character, but she simply doesn't work as Top Dog in any way.
The only person who knows about first aide stuffs in this show is Joan. ;)))))
28:06 Hilarious
I love seeing sarah punch spider at the end I hate spider.
Rodney looking at 2 them he knows they bashed him lol
Anyone know the name of the music track that plays over the opening mugshots and just before in this episode??
Spider got her just deserts
Joan good threatening adams get in there joan
Lori has beautiful eyes 👀
She has beautiful everything!
I'm glad they toned down her fairytale obsession although I do find it odd that she never made a repunzel reference in relation to Kath Maxwell.
3 minutes 40 seconds recap 😒
How come Sarah is getting called by her first name by the screws but they don't do that with anyone else
its very interesting how the women react to aborigines
December 2024 , im guessing they wouldn't say some of the words in this episode and sarah west storyline now.
Joan tell me joan your playing a dangerous game lol
The actress who played Sarah was phenomenal 👏👏
Australian racism head on? Are we mean't to be surprised? - she's oppressed by the majority thats why she lashes out. On the other hand - she could do with a prolonged stay in prison. Its not a black and white issue
Spoilt rich kud more like with nothin to grumble about so has to invent racial oppression from stories she's heard from others.
"She's oppressed', my ass.
The actress who plays Sarah west also plays doreen in Wentworth 😊
No she don't
Different people. Sarah was played by Kylie Belling and Doreen in Wentworth was played by Shareena Clanton
Sarah West shouts louder than Lexie Paterson!
this should be called "Cry baby merle" episode lol
16.36 That is one of the few times I like Rodney. He is a creep absolutely, but at least he started to stand up for himself and stop beating Kate's doormat
Think Adams walked over kath at dining room said bets are on
I thought Miss Delia Stout was part Aboriginal?
the7thwreck As did I. Very odd like they are acting she is white.
Delia looks like she is half Aboriginal. She does not look white.
@@ej2832 Desiree Smith was actually born in the UK!
😅😅
I thought that the first time I saw her and thought it was about time there were Aboriginal actress’s in an Australian series 👍
I think it’s great they finally have a black character but boy is it obvious the writers don’t know how to write a black female character or storyline. And the racism is out of control but of its time.
The racism is exactly what you would have had at the time, so what are you complaining about? It's realistic, if a bit over-the-top.
Shes not African American though.
@@angielucas5164 really?
Right, because God forbid anything is exclusively white.
@@angielucas5164 Did he actually call her "African American" before the edit ? If so, what an amazing cretin 😮
