Ecstatic to see this. Started acquiring Skaven just before the new season as my first army. I was thrown entirely sideways about what to do after the change.
I've never actually owned a Skaven army, but I have always love the little rat men. It's the faction that got me into the hobby. Ever since I saw them in some magazine my friend brought to school, I've always wanted to build a Skaven army. One thing I've noticed is that the people that like Skaven never abandon Skaven.
Love teh video. I've owned my Skaven army since 8th and have 3 each of Doomwheel and Hellpit. Going heavy random plays into the whole theme of Skaven and yeah, if you can't take the swings, don't tun them. Or try other more reliable armies heh. That game where everything lines up tho, that makes STORIES that last. :) I couldn't believe yet another price drop for the Hellpit. You're definitely right, we will take that. If Skaven actually get a big revamp with the release of 4th and are in the starter box like the talk says, I'm hopeful we finally see the army look a lot better.
I love these vids, the pile in just shy of 3" to get the battetactic is genius! I disagree with Thranquol tho, he is a magical powerhouse, and sometimes his rule to cast commands for "free" is amazing, plus the added benefic of being a huge deterant for hordes and a masterclan himself so it's almost impossible to get the "Three claws ahead" :)
I used thanquol in a small tournament that I got 1st place in a few weeks ago... I will say he was vital to getting my endless spells off and dispelling my opponents but other than that he didn't have much happen in terms of combat. He'd kill some units here and there but losing that huge mobility bonus makes it hard for him to really get in there.
Great video, full of very pertinent, wise advice. 👌 Another Skaven video theme could be to propose a few thematic lists with the game options and strategies that go with them, especially in battle tactics, which remain the most complicated to manage for our army at heart. 🤘
So first off thanks so much for the content. I haven't played at all this season, just looking to get back into it. I noticed you didn't mention weapon teams and also gutter runner. So not a big fan of either? I haven't played skaven since the new book. Focused on Nighthaunt. But I always liked weapon teams especially since we can hide them again! Always had a soft spot for gutter runners, and really they were not great in the last book, but I used them anyway and really interrupted my opponents. Now they look much better, so I am excited to try them. Just would like to hear what you think.
Last season I used Gutter Runners a lot! This season they just fell out for a few reasons: 1. They don't score the Desecrate battle tactic anymore. 2. They're very frail and a lot of the tactics have to do with units either starting or ending the turn in combat; that's something Gutter Runners have a really hard time with. 3. They don't typically delete things in one go (unless you're running a squad of 15) and this season the Death armies are just really good at healing any chip damage. 4. Then other armies like Seraphon can deal a bunch of chip damage to us, with bad Bravery and no recursion you're GOING to lose Gutter Runners and then lose even more when they flee. For Weapons Teams I think the Warpfire Thrower has a place, but the Ratling Guns just don't do enough damage on average.
Cool video I would love to see some more videos about different army's. Right now I'm just getting into AOS and I picked the Goblin army, I would love to hear what's fun or some good tips!
Great video ! To me Thanquol allow the battle tatic Magic dominance T1 very nicely. You can support that with a anthorian locus bataillon. And only one more priest in you'r list can offer a preatty easy battle tatics with 3 priers T2. You'r list is very aggresive and the theory dehind is good but with few changes you can have something more flexible on you'r gameplay and not be forced to exposed you'r ressources to make the battle tatics possible.
More often than not you can score a Magical Dominance turn 1 by deploying out of unbind range, and if you are in unbind range it isn't worth the risk so Thanquol's pluses to cast there aren't that helpful for that specifically. As far as heroes in the list we're maxed out at 6, so you can't squeeze in another Priest without dropping a Grey Seer and then you're losing 3 Clawsteps which is what makes the whole thing work! We just had the Michigan GT this past weekend and someone running the list went 5-0 with Skaven, so I think we're on to something!
i just started skaven and age of sigmar a few months ago because i saw the models and fell instantly in love with the stormfiends, and a friend found me a super cheap lot of old moulder stuff to get into the game with i realize they're not the best units around, but in your expert opinion, how would i be able to work a list that runs the fiends? they're the reason i got into the rats, so even if they're not the best i'd like to at least always have a unit of them around but i will definitely use these recommendations once i start upgrading my army, thanks so much
The Screaming Bell got a lot better with the Push rule being removed! The problem is that outside of casting it still doesn't do anything; it doesn't do any damage in combat, the bell effect isn't consistently good, and it only counts as 2 models on an objective. They're cheap and can be very durable, but it's a model your opponent should just completely ignore which turns it into a paperweight on the table.
Skittershank and crew are definitely some of the coolest models in the game and I love everything Clan Eshin! That said in the game they aren't really a powerhouse unit; you can still bring them and make good use of them without shooting yourself in the foot, but they aren't a must-have staple in every list.
Stormfiends are just so expensive points wise! The battle tactics this season want us to have a lot of units, so I think a squad of 6 Stormfiends is still doable and potent, but the old lists with 9 are going to struggle. For WLC they're still good, but when (not if) they blow themselves up early in a game you're just going to lose that game which isn't ideal competitively.
Typically you'll do your first charge with a unit that doesn't matter, so you roll your first charge, reroll with the command ability if needed, and then if both of those aren't good enough you get to roll your charge roll for the unit you actually want to make it in.
Are stormfeinds just not viable anymore? I love massive rats with machine guns lol UPDATE: I looked at their point cost. As Danny in hot fuzz says, "it's a shame!"
How will your list look now with the recent point raises on PCB's and plague monks? Also, I'm a huge fan of moulder so I'm thinking of playing a similar list but with rat ogres and master moulders instead of your plague stuff. I Would love to know your thoughts on that. Great video! Thank you!
Doing a bunch of testing right now, but my regular list stayed the same amount of points and is still potent. With points staying the same on the Plague Monks I'm not sold on them, PCB's still just do it better in most cases. Specific units I'm re-evaluating right now in lists: Thanquol, Plagueclaws, WLCs', different combos with Rogors, and the Plague Furnace to get the prayer tactic. I'll likely do a video in a couple weeks once I feel them all out a little better!
@@warpfireminis Of course, they lowered the points on the warbringer so that made room for the 20 extra points in 2 PCB units. I guess the big question with Thanquol would be how to get him up the board without Lauchon. Maybe there's some way that I haven't figured out yet. Looking forward to new videos. For this season I think the grand strat gets a little too difficult if you mix in a Master Moulder, and I don't see dropping any of the heroes currently in the list to squeeze him in. Like you could drop the Warbringer to get enough points and still have 5 Heroes for the Grand Strat, but he's just too good right now considering the meta.
I haven't done the deep dive on Sylvaneth this season as I've been prepping with the ratfolk, but I don't think Sylvaneth is in a particularly great place right now competitively. You can still win games, but the grand strat is tough, and the top armies all play SUPER well into Sylvaneth so it's just an uphill battle all-round.
What's the rest of the list look like? If you have 10 PCB's to put with the Grinder, 3 Clawsteps, and can only afford one of the two I'd go with the Grinder.
Literally 5 seconds in: The rat boys are rock bottom. This is every army I choose smh. I play guard for 40k and I'm getting into the rat boys for sigmar lol. So, I find this fitting.
I tried a few lists that had the Spell Portal + Skreech + Maelstrom to see how I felt about it, but it never really clicked for me. If you got all three spells off it felt good, but relying on a chain of three spells going off just isn't my favorite strategy. If we're only using Portal for Skreech alone, it IS good, but I think too expensive for the points.
With the Warbringer being in the list there isn't enough room to have both 3 Clawsteps with Masterclan heroes AND the 3 Priests for the battle tactic. The Warbringer is a must-have for me and then if I can only have one I'm definitely going with 3 Clawsteps!
@@warpfireminis There kinda is, if you use the verminlord warpseer, his ability The Great Manipulators makes him count as 2 masterclan heroes for 3 clawsteps. You could remove Lord Skreech and a Grey Seer, and still keep skitterleap and 3 clawsteps. It's not nececarily better, but it is an option.
You're right that you could, but you really want quantity of heroes for the grand strat to have a better chance and the dropoff from Skreech to Warpseer is pretty massive. Using primals on Skreech's spell turns it into an awesome tool to do MW and get free units that we can use to score tactics!

The artifact Warpstone Charm makes enemy saves within 3" have -1; aka adding a rend to his profile.

If you're going to run 2 plague priests already why not just run Skabbik as your 3rd to make Crescendo of the Diseased Choir a free BT on turn 2?
