US Open Tampa Recap - Skaven Take the Golden Ticket!

  • Well I took the ratfolk down to the US Open in Tampa last week and not only did I take home the golden ticket, but another Skaven player went 4-1 too; rats are back! I ended up 4-1 and 6th place, but the 5 players ahead of me (stacked tournament!) all had their tickets already, so as rats do, we snuck our way into Worlds.
    Here's a recap of how the tournament games went down! I tried my best to take some pictures of the games, but I'm sure I made some mistakes or forgot some things that happened in the mix. We got the big swings of the game right though, so you can see how the rats made it happen in a competitive environment.

    This was one of the most comprehensive player focused game recap Ive seen yet. Not only did I get a good understanding playing with your list and Skaven, but it helped understand the notions of success as the game progresses, while considering the goals of the opponent and turn for turn decisions. This may be one of the best testaments for good play I've seen yet, while appreciating the opponents and the choices they have to make. Really makes the game inviting. Well done. Subscribed and like achieved! Can't wait for the next video like this.

    I'm new to AoS and Skaven was my number 1 pick for armies. I actually have a fear of rats, but I loved their lore and all their units so much that i had to collect them. Exposure therapy at its finest 🤣 I absolutely love this channel and you've helped me realise that clanrats even tho they have numbers, should not even touch a combat. Loved this vid and all the others you make. Please keep it going. Big love from Australia ❤

      Hello, fellow Australian Skaven Master. Yes, if there is one thing that I have discovered, it is that clanrats should not even think about touching combat.
      May the Great Horned Rat grant you victory in all your endeavours.

    Hey Jordan! I was the Lumineth player from round 5. That was indeed a fun game, huge congrats on your Golden Ticket! Just watched your Worlds video as well, sounds like it was a hoot. It took me looking over the list of people going to Worlds to realize just how insanely strong the FL meta is....our area had like, what, 5+ players at Worlds?! This was my first season of GT's and I had no idea what a shark tank I was walking into! Regarding our game, it was polite of you to focus on the luck aspect of the game ;), but there's no getting around that it was a blunder/ignorance of game knowledge on my end to not know the damage potential on the great plague and stay outside of 13" or use Teclis to 1-cast the ward save if the mortals are that threatening. For future big events I'll have to study-up a lot on other armies if I want to improve. Failing Merciless Blizzard to remove that big rat guy was also unlucky. Now, all of that being said, I think even without the great plague spike or with blizzard going off, that you still win that match-up relatively easily. I heard a stat (I think from the Honest Wargamer) that Ymetrica is kind of a noob-trap subfaction in that it's the most played but the lowest win rate. I went the Ymetrica route with the cow and Light of Eltharion to have melee game into OBR Null Myriad, and I did end up playing them, so that was good. But, as the World Champion showed, it's probably better to just play Zaitrec and focus on our strengths, hoping to dodge terrible match-ups. I'm glad they are nerfing Null Myriad to a 4+ spell ignore this battle scroll because that just felt like an auto loss for magic armies. Anyway, hope to see ya at future events!

    Loved this video, its so rare to hear how you thought about your options and decisions as each game progressed, would love to see more like this. Could you outline how you tend to position your gnawholes for the different match ups because I always struggle to know if to keep them close for the +1 casting or further away for more useful teleports.

    Hey,
    I just tried your list on a small tournament in my aos gaming club. It was a 6 player with three games setting.
    Win VS. Sylvaneth (all big trees list)
    Win VS. Seraphon (list with a lot of dinosaurs, rather unexperienced player)
    Loose VS. Khorne (skullfiend tribe, skarbrand, bloodthirster of unfettered fury, skull invocation...)
    All in all I am very happy with the outcome!
    Thank you very very much for this list an all of your amazing Tipps on how to play skaven!
    Greetings from Germany!

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  9 месяцев назад

      Awesome, 2-1 is super solid! Khorne can be a tricky matchup as they just have so many cool tools at their disposal and can hit (or boom) super hard. It's doable, but one where we definitely have to play an excellent game!

    After watching the 4th round game, I'm starting to see AOS like a gladiatorial arena with conditions changing as the game escalates, like the changing scoring conditions of the scoring zones. It creates a nuance to tabletop gaming, inspiring creativity and dynamic play other games fail on.

    Very insightful. I think playing Skaven your strength lies in knowing the strengths and weaknesses of you opponent. Your breakdown of the Teclis matchup was perfect. You spiked damage for sure but I think you’d have still been in a winning position if not.
    One point I noticed is that if the cathallar had the pheonix stone she can’t bring herself back. The wording is ‘another hero’. So yeah watch out for that. Cathallar is really fragile in this Teclis list especially without bladelords and the ward

    I saw it all the way through, read some of the comments and completely agree. Thanks for sharing, you definitaly give it your all and we have a chance to learn some great points of view. I see that you all do pile in very freely, you even shifts targets at times and move to other units , are we allowed to pile in with models touching or is that still a restriction?

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  9 месяцев назад +1

      Since this wasn't actual game footage and just me moving models around to show what happened in the games I wasn't being careful or exact with any of the moves or pile-ins. In game it's important that the pile-in movement is VERY precise as it's a VERY big deal; you don't move other people's models and each model in your unit has to pile-in to be the same or closer to the closest enemy unit. The example where I charged the WLC and then piled into the Stormfiends is doable as the charge roll (in reality) was big enough for most of them to land base-to-base with the Stormfiends as well so they could pile into them.

    • @martinhgdahlzamastil4430
      @martinhgdahlzamastil4430 9 месяцев назад

      @@warpfireminis would you considerr making a yuotube on cahrge rules and pile-in as it is handled in tournament, showing what players can and cannot do. Perhaps spicing it up with options for attackers and defenders single model unit, regular units and screens?

  • @nicksiegrist378

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  9 месяцев назад +1

      It depends on the matchup, but it'll usually be similar to how things went in that Skaven mirror match: Try to deploy out of big shot range, pick your spot, go all-in early, and then just hope you kill enough stuff.

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  9 месяцев назад +1

      It's the same list! The only change was we're running Blizzard/Death Frenzy and Blizzard/Skitterleap on the Grey Seers and then the Plague Priests know Rabid Rabid for one and Heal for the other. It plays exactly the same; Heal is nice for the big rats and keeping foot heroes alive, and then Blizzard on both Grey Seers just gives you two portions of the board that are in Blizzard range.

    How did the warbringer verminlord just kill the turtle? Isnt the turtle like undestroyable?

    • @warpfireminis
      @warpfireminis  9 месяцев назад

      The combo of Devious Adversary + Warpstone Charm + his command ability ends up giving the Warbringer 12 total attacks at 2 to hit, 2 to wound (rerolling), rend -3, and 3 damage (with flaming weapon on the glaive.) So that did the bulk of it, but I believe the Hell Pit did a few MW when he died, and he may've been in range of a spell as well in the hero phase. Moral of the story: the Warbringer slaps.
