I remember watching the first episode as it aired. Was immediately hooked. Still one of the funniest shows ever. Remember my friend's dad came up to us while watching it one time, not realizing that it was satire. "Those cops are really bad at their job, it's almost funny.." which in itself, was pretty hilarious.

I'm a Reno local for close to 60 years & the show cracks me up! As to what gave the creator the real idea behind the show is something I was told by a friend & I still believe that he told it right. Lake Tahoe is only 30 mi. from Reno, and Incline Village on the eastern shores of the lake is in Washoe county so the reason for them (Washoe County Sheriff's) to be on regular patrol there. A traffic stop by the Sheriff's on a rented car by the creator took place after he landed in Reno then rented a car to drive up to the lake, he was questioned by deputies about his identity and the car was searched while he was being given the third degree so to speak and more units showing up ( I had six of them behind me on a routine traffic stop one day up there, I think at the same time as a shift change, but it does happen, it can look like a real crime scene when it does) and making him run late for a meeting with someone, so by now he was getting pissed. Despite his explanation of who he was & what he was doing there, they didn't believe his story so that's why he eventually became so aggravated at their handling the situation, that he vowed he would get even with em' via national television! So that is my understanding anyway, but I'll say one thing, it sounds about right!
