Freddie Mercury actually saw this scene before he died. He thought it was hilarious and let them use the song. It launched the come back of Queen in the States.
Holliday Jones I saw Brian mention this in an interview. I had always wondered if Freddie did end up seeing it. Love that he loved it. Watching this scene when I saw this movie for the first time was how I discovered the band.
Brian May said: “I didn’t know Mike Myers,” he says, “but he rang me up out of the blue and said, ‘We’ve done this amazing sequence in our new film-can we have your approval?’ ” At Myers’ request, May took the segment to singer Freddie Mercury, who was then near the end of his life. (Mercury died of pneumonia resulting from AIDS in 1991.) “I took it around to Freddie, who was not in a good state at that time,” May says. “He was..confined to his bed, but I took it round and played it to him and he loved it. “Strangely enough, the humor in it was quite close to our own. Because we did that kind of thing in the car, bouncing up and down to our own tracks!” The song’s appearance in the movie revived it and sent it on a second run into the music charts and helped Queen launch a comeback in the U.S. in the years following Mercury’s death. “There’s a huge irony there,” May says, “because there was a time when we completely owned America and we would tour there every year. It seemed like we couldn’t go wrong. And then we lost America for various reasons, which are now history. “Freddie had a very dark sense of humor. And he used to say, ‘I suppose I’ll have to die before we get America back.’ And, in a sense, that was what happened. And it was Wayne’s World-which came completely out of nowhere-that made it happen.” - from: www.guitarworld.com

Thanks to Mike Myers for putting this song in the film. I was one of the many kids at the time who totally thought Bohemian Rhapsody was a new song in 1992 and lovvved it. I remember it getting loads of airplay along with everything else that was popular at the time. We all loved it and bought other Queen albums after that. I was bicycling on downtown Houston one afternoon and stopped at a light. A car pulled up to me with four guys singing along to Bohemian Rhapsody. Totally made my day!
One of the reasons this movie was fun is because many of us in that age range did exactly that when we were teenagers or young adults. Long before we saw it in the movie.
We once stopped at a traffic light in our even shittier worn out Austin Mini, next to us was a big ass car with boring gown ups. I don't remember if it really was Bohemian Rhapsody that we were blasting but we were for sure emulating this scene. And it was so funny because we were all on our way to Fantasy Convention, some of us in full LARP gear (among them a barbarian with a pelt around his shoulders). On top of that, since the driver is a gardener, he had some of his tools scattered around in the car, among them a hedge trimmer on the backlite shelf ... it must have been a very strange encounter for that family, they couldn't stop staring at us and their kid was jumping up and down in joy :) That was more than 20 years ago, sigh.

I watched Wayne's World for the first time a few weeks ago on Netflix. Freaked out when I saw that the Bohemian Rhapsody seen. They were driving around my old neighborhood. Must've shot that scene literally a few weeks after we moved in, when I was 5. Recognized everything in the background, from the old Woolworths, which is a Footlocker now, to the place where I sued to get my haircuts, to the Gap and Payless which I still frequent on occasion.
This scene wouldn't be as iconic if it wasn't bohemian rhapsody! Mike Myers was horrified when they redid the video saying they pissed on a picasso and sent Queen a note saying it wasn't his idea and they wrote back Thanks for using our song. Now thats what you call a classy band 😍
Queen was losing their spotlight, ad G'N'R was huge at the time. So the producers wanted to use G'N'R in order to appeal to the masses. Myers choice to use this song actually got Bohemian Rhapsody on the charts again.
Yep. I love that bit of trivia. They all were supposed to memorize the song before filming but Dana Carvey failed and thought he could fake it. Turns out it's way more hilarious with him clearly not knowing the lyrics. My other favorite fact is that they filmed this so many times that they all had neck cramps from headbanging so much. That's why Mike Meyers looks so stiff.
I think that's a testament to how good the movie is. I was so "in the movie/in the story" that it took me a second to snap into reality and process all that. I really enjoyed it.
This was my introduction to Queen. I remember waiting by the radio to record this song on tape cassette. My parents were definitely surprised I was listening to Queen!
Man I loved how at first Phil was out of it and about to get sick. Then he got a second wind and got all energized with his friends and had a great time!
Then later at the auto shop, Phil was so partied out that he remembered everything about Friday night at the Gas Works EXCEPT that Wayne & Garth were there with him

Wayne’s like “Phil, we were there. Are you mental?” They were the ones who brought him there lmao 🤣 So many random funny moments in this movie. It never gets old. Makes me miss my childhood.
Legit, when my cousin was in labor in her car while I was driving, Bohemian came on the radio and her and I started singing it on the way there. I'm not joking, that's our favorite song. And when we hear it, we can't resist to sing it or stick around for it.
I went to see this on the night of my 15th birthday with my friend Paul, who 2 yrs later would be killed by a drunk driver while he was coming home from basketball practice. We had a great time that night and what I didn't know at the time was it was his idea to go see it so my sister could set up the house for my surprise birthday party later that night! This was also the first time I ever heard Bohemian Rhapsody we laughed so hard at this scene and the following Monday at school we sang it all day! Its been 24yrs since he has been gone and I miss his goofy laugh and his jokes but I will never forget the fun that was had on February 15th 1992.
My friends and I actually did ride around aimlessly and jam/sing along to Bohemian Rhapsody (on cassette!) when it came out back in 1976. My younger brothers did it, too, so I thought everyone did it when they were teenagers. It's that kind of song.
I am 32 now and till this day I can't listen to this song in my car without almost waiting for the part to headbang. This movie really messed me up big time!!!
My drunk friends and I were just riding around to Bo Rhap exactly like this a few days ago; just screaming at the top of our lungs and banging our heads. One of my happiest moments in a long time. My boyfriend was the first one to realize that we were literally reenacting this scene
God I remember watching Wayne's World when I was 8 and it was my first time hearing Bohemian Rhapsody, and this was literally the only part I knew, and my uncle showed me the MV and I heard the song in full. I was in awe and felt blessed to hear such a story in this form. Imagine the full surprise watching BR and realizing the full circle we've come to. Never forget :')
I read that Mike Myers wanted this scene and threatened not to do the movie. Then years later when he was offered a part for bohemian rhapsody, he took it without looking at the script nor his character.

Bohemian Rhapsody was already quite a unique rock song that stood in a league of its own. This scene enhanced the legend - The song, Freddie Mercury who created it, and the band that played it, Queen.
i know this is an old post but that exact thing just happened to me while I was doing dishes alongside my 8 yr old granddaughter and she said I know this song grandma and I said you do well you got to watch a clip from this movie because it's exactly what popped in my head and she got a big kick out of it 😂 Party on

It's no surprise Myers was in the new film and that Brian and Roger gave him and Dana Carvey a standing ovation at the Oscars!

On top of that, since the driver is a gardener, he had some of his tools scattered around in the car, among them a hedge trimmer on the backlite shelf ... it must have been a very strange encounter for that family, they couldn't stop staring at us and their kid was jumping up and down in joy :)
That was more than 20 years ago, sigh.

I watched Wayne's World for the first time a few weeks ago on Netflix. Freaked out when I saw that the Bohemian Rhapsody seen. They were driving around my old neighborhood. Must've shot that scene literally a few weeks after we moved in, when I was 5. Recognized everything in the background, from the old Woolworths, which is a Footlocker now, to the place where I sued to get my haircuts, to the Gap and Payless which I still frequent on occasion.

wow...
Used to get your haircuts? This deserves an explanation.
I thought they only had Woolworths in Australia.

Thanking you Mike Myers for fighting for this song to be used in the movie
😆 otherwise head banging to *Welcome to The Jungle by Guns and Roses* or No movie.
Yeah and another thing party on, mike
This scene wouldn't be as iconic if it wasn't bohemian rhapsody! Mike Myers was horrified when they redid the video saying they pissed on a picasso and sent Queen a note saying it wasn't his idea and they wrote back Thanks for using our song. Now thats what you call a classy band 😍
You realize that if it weren't for this one scene, no one would even remember the movie "Wayne's World?"
My Name Is Sarah he didn’t really fight for it to be in the movie, Freddie actually saw the scene before he died and thought it was hilarious
No other song would've worked..so glad Freddie loved this.
Fact: They almost used a Guns N Roses song for this, but Mike Myers protested. GNR is my favorite band, but this is definitely a better choice.

Queen was losing their spotlight, ad G'N'R was huge at the time. So the producers wanted to use G'N'R in order to appeal to the masses. Myers choice to use this song actually got Bohemian Rhapsody on the charts again.
Dungus The Fungus fair enough
Guns N Roses: fashion band for posers in the 90's and today.

The best bit is when Garth doesn't know the words at the end hahahaha
And that was apparently not acting. Dana Carvey, the actor, genuinely didn't know the words
KHD _ I always thought he just turned into an anime character considering the only lip movement they make is a mouth opening and closing.
K Dot _ lol yeah😂
