High school me was in love with this album and this track in particular. I'm thirty now. Thanks The Postal Service. Edit: Finally got to see them tonight (9/19/23) for this album's 20th anniversary. It was everything.
This reminds me of waiting in front of school after 6th period. Waiting for the rest of my friends to walk to the front of the school. And the we would chill and hand out and discuss what we were doing after .
@@plaguerson what I love about RUclips when it's not infested with an influx of mindless commentary is the genuine fleeting connection that comments on these older songs usually have.
The year is 2005. I’m coming back to my dorm room around 3am healthily buzzed. Pop my laptop open, load iTunes, and plug my earbuds in. Fade away into blissful sleep jamming to this album with no real wake up time. Take me back.
A crush of mine showed me this band in high school. I would always skip over this song but I came across it a few days ago and I just cant get over it. I havent talked to the person who showed me this song in a few years but today I saw them in the grocery store after years of no contact. I feel like its a sign but idk what it means ...
I feel like I've died a thousand times to this song playing over my car radio, running into the city on the train to grab some groceries, and sitting outside the bar on a friday night at 4 am. It never runs the same way in my mind, but it always pulls what life I have from my chest and leaves it where I was.
Niko Bleau this record was one of my few go-to tripping albums. Whether it was a great trip to make it a little better, or a trip going bad and needing something to pull me out of it or reverse course. Just had to say I know exactly what you’re talking about haha.
I love your comment so much. I read it over and over and i feel the same exact way, I just couldn't put it into words myself 💓 I've loved the postal service for a long time but for some reason I always skipped over this song but a few days ago it played and i finally listened to it and ive had it on repeat since then. I love the lyric "and I want life in every word to the extent that it's absurd"
I can’t agree more, it happens to me as well. So powerful was my life, and this song when it first came out which has created a relationship with the song that will never end.
I thought it was "I know you're wise beyond your years, but do you ever get the feel, that you're perfect versus just a lie you tell yourself to help you get by"
@@Jahtso The song seems to be about a director (with what seems like compulsive control issues) attempting to create his perfect scene to convince HiMseLF that love can be real. Perfect verse is referring to the script; saying it’s a lie just meaning it’s make believe.
Of all the music I have ever listened to, this song has always been my favorite. Probably because I discovered it in such a happy and carefree part of my life. I always feel at peace when I hear it, so thanks for reposting this to RUclips :D
I feel 16 and transported to 2005 when this song starts up. Maaan. Life really moves along at strange paces and it’s pretty startling when you are listening to something like this and thinking how it doesn’t feel very old. But it’s older that I was when I got into this record…
"I've been waiting since birth to find a love that would looks and sound like a movie...a want so badly to believe that there is truth that love is real, and I want life in every word to the extant that its absurd."
Listened to this album while taking MDMA when I was 17. Sat with two friends on a trampoline next to the Biloxi coast telling heart-felt stories and crying (happily).
" And I know your wise beyond your years, but do you ever get the fear, that your perfect verse is just a lie you tell yourself to help you get by." Damn..
I first heard it shortly after it came out. I was about 21. I listened to it hundreds of times over the next few years with the first real friends I ever had. Probably my best memories and still my favorite album of all time.
I think it did, yeah. Postal Service and Death Cab. I think they showed me that it was possible to be a geeky wordsmith-nerd and still be cool/ have romantic prospects / etc. "I want life in every word, to the extent that its absurd". -- that was like, a life motto for me after this tune; still is.
I was waiting for a cross-town train in the London Underground When it struck me (when it struck me) That I'd been waiting since birth to find a love that would look and sound Like a movie So I changed my plans, I rented a camera and a van And then I called you I need you to pretend that we are in love again And you agreed to I want so badly to believe That there is truth, that love is real And I want life in every word To the extent that it's absurd I grease the lens and frame the shot using a friend As my stand-in (as my stand-in) The script had called for rain but it was clear that day So we faked it The marker snapped and I yelled, "Quiet on the set!" (And the called action) I kissed you in a style Clark Gable would have admired I thought it classic I want so badly to believe That there is truth, that love is real And I want life in every word To the extent that it's absurd I know you're wise beyond your years But do you ever get the fear That your perfect verse is just a lie You tell yourself to help you get by That you tell yourself to help you get by That you tell yourself to help you get by
I remember hearing this in a college cafe back in 2004 or so, and I thought "is this the second coming of New Order?". I still think it feels more like classic New Order than New Order's own second coming, _Get Ready_!
I looked like a classic scandinavian boy in high school and now i've grown. I was having a strange identity crisis and felt so unwanted and felt like ignoring it all and had only so few healthy days. All i had was my "pimp" tapes and hip hop. I was so lost.
Back when Yahoo had games where you could talk to your opponent, I was playing canasta at the time (I know that makes me sound like a dinosaur) But my opponent randomly told me to check this band out. (Again dinosaur) and Kazaa'd the SHIT out of this band. I cannot tell you the deep depression this music helped me with. I will forever be grateful.....
Honestly I didnt realize that either until you just said it. I thought it was just a beige background. Amazing what happens when you open your eyes....

I discovered it the summer after my 5th grade year. One of the best summers of my life. I can't listen to a single postal service song without being sent back to those golden sunsets with me and my friends playing in muddy creeks on the edge of the forest, and chasing after fireflies. For me personally, all of these older songs are the essence of summer.
I remember I had a burned CD of this album senior year and and a bunch of us went to class after lunch high and English teacher was bad ass and engaged in a talk about how music influenced our work. So instead of her enya, someone vouched for the postal service but nobody had a cd or didnt want to risk leaving class ..so I ran across campus to my car and grabbed my CD...came back and she played it while we worked and she was at her desk. She was a really cool teacher. She knew but we werent acting up. She knew how to work with the different stoner kids. Stoners can be fucking smart.
I have a good history with this song, I liked a girl name Bailey that knew it a long time ago. In 2010 I requested on Columbia College radio in Chicago and during the DJ swap they played it for me :) whew
“I need you to pretend that we are in love again, and you agreed to” is one of the most gut-wrenching lyrics i’ve ever heard
You should listen to Elliott Smith!
And I find the line " I am finally seeing why I was the one worth leaving" from The District Sleeps Alone Tonight a total gut punch.

I was waiting for a cross-town train in the London Underground
When it struck me (when it struck me)
That I'd been waiting since birth to
find a love that would look and sound
Like a movie
So I changed my plans, I rented a camera and a van
And then I called you
I need you to pretend that we are in love again
And you agreed to
I want so badly to believe

I thought it classic
I want so badly to believe
That there is truth, that love is real
And I want life in every word
To the extent that it's absurd
I know you're wise beyond your years
But do you ever get the fear
That your perfect verse is just a lie
You tell yourself to help you get by
That you tell yourself to help you get by
That you tell yourself to help you get by
