  • We discuss if Psychic Powers (Psionics) belong in Fantasy settings. We discuss the issues with Psionics especially the power point system versus the spells per day system of D20 that they have to fit into. D20, Pathfinder, Dungeons & Dragons, Rifts, Warhammer and other RPGs are discussed.

I've seen plenty of interest in translating 5E for example into many Sci-fi and cyberpunk type settings so the broader question is to what extend should people expect official rule support for this broader concepts that blend or even cross beyond the fantasy genre.
I'm not sure why WotC never addresses this because the demand is clearly there but so far they're fully conceding it to third parties and rivals like Paizo's Starfinder. I think it is probably mostly the bad taste the Modern D20 and Future D20 products left behind.
Yet even to support some of their core, very sought after properties like Dark Sun and Spelljammer they don't seem to be *able* to come up with a good 5E psionics system. Mostly because they really just want to repurpose the existing spell casting system and that really does not work and *does* makes Psionics feel out of place.
However if WotC would come up with a revamped, fully new system that takes some of the concepts they had on 3.5 Psionics and really seriously dedicate a book to it (Not just a tiny % of pages) then it wouldn't feel as "out of place" and more people would dream settings where Psionics do feel like their belong or play on the ones like Dark Sun in which is well integrated and makes sense.
This is something Paizo could also address but on their case I think they might be holding on to those concepts for when they update Starfinder to the Pathfinder 2 system but again: If Paizo can put Androids and laser guns on their official setting I don't understand what would be so far fetched about Psionics.

I think so, you could just call it another kind of magic.

I don't mind Psionics in Fantasy, I love it!
But not as another Magic. I hate Psionics in D&D or Pathfinder since it is just another Psionics, like they do with Ki. And it ruins the whole idea of it being separate to Magic. The only reason why it's called Magic is because of the normalisation of looking at Paranatural Power Systems as "Magic Systems" because of people analysis in the "hard" and "soft" systems of Magic Spell casting. I hate it. I hate everyone with media analysis have been taught this backwards way of looking at Power Systems, revolving around Magic instead of other Paranatural Powers or even Natural Powers like a weapon attack! It all falls apart when it interacts with world's with million of different powers that aren't just Paranatural but all over the place, Natural to Preternatural to Supernatural to Transendent Powers of a mainstream superhero comic.
