    Ibuprofen isn’t just masking the pain. It is an anti inflammatory. Of course you don’t want to take too much, but take it when you need it. Good luck and keep pushing.

      Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory when taken at the proper dosage. SCH- You should see a physician when you can as your back seems to be causing severe and disabling pain.

    Keep in mind. You've gone from never hiking before to doing a 18+ Mile day in just 151 days. You're crushing it. I'm an avid hiker and I haven't done a 18 miler this year. When I do, I won't be hiking the next day. I'll be at work, hobbling around, complaining about how much my legs hurt, and telling everyone how many miles I hiked yesterday. You should be proud of what you've accomplished so far.

    Corey, you can go to Sky Lakes Medical Center, in Klamath Falls (541) 882-6311, when you get to Crater Lake to check if you've got a herniated disc and if not get diagnosed with whatever is causing so much pain, and if you need arch supports, they have physicians that can diagnose both and X-ray equipment. If you've gotten disc problems from bending, twisting, pulling up and carrying a heavy pack, it could become a life long injury, and if you've got arch problems they can be fixed with arch supports-orthotics, you could have bruised spots on your feet as well. Both feet and back could result in far more serious conditions if not looked at and treated, and at the very least you could get a Rx that'll help. There's also an ER in Medford but that's a bit farther away, at any rate, you'll need a facility with a physician and X-ray equipment. Please seek advice from a doctor, and don't risk long term damage to your back. Many hikers seek help from medical clinics along the trail and usually they work with hikers ability to pay if not insured. You are not the first thru hiker who has needed medical support on this long trail, so do something pro-active about your health and seek care.

      diane p agreed! An MRI is going to show if you have a herniated/bulging disc too. If I want on, doing what I was doing without checking my back out, I would be in a terrible position. I got mine looked at and now the doctors say I can do the WHOLE TRAIL next year, I just have to be mindful

    Thank you for inspiring me! I went to REI today, got fitted to rent a backpacking kit in two weeks to go hiking on the Timberline Trail on Mt. Hood. I have been following the posts of 5 hikers. 4 on the PCT one on the AT. You are the only one who is still hiking. For various reasons they have all had to stop before they reached their goals. Comparing the number of days is apples to oranges in most cases - so many different stories out there.

    Enjoying the views through the your pain reminds me of reading the diaries from people on the Oregon Trail even though they were sick and hungry they would still stop, go out and look at beautiful things.
    Even though you’re not knocking down 30 mile days you are kindred to the pioneers of old and that is awesome.

    a whole body skeeter suit!?! awesome!! you're probably super tense from worrying about snow, and also, dont worry about how far you have to go and what others have to say about it. hike your hike and enjoy spending time with little bee! you may find your back relaxing. on a side note. Ibuprofen is an inflammation reducer. you are not masking the pain by taking it, you are helping to reduce swelling.

    Also great for general muscle aches, pains or bruising is Arnica if you can find it. It comes in a gel to apply directly to the sore spots or in small sublingual pills. I usually use both. I highly recommend this from my own experience. I also wonder about taking a few more zeros now and then? So proud of you and all you have accomplished! You keep looking healthier with each new video. Yay Second Chance!

    Keep going my friend, suggestion though for your back. See if you can find a chiropractor in the next town and see if you can get an adjustment. That may be what it takes to eliminate some if not all of your pain. Remember you've lost so much weight you back is probably trying to figure out what the "natural position" You may only need an adjustment to get you back in the game.

    • @RobinEsch
      @RobinEsch 5 лет назад +7

      I totally agree. A good chiropractor adjustment can get your bones aligned so the pain goes away, sometimes instantly. But consider finding a chiropractor that has the word holistic in their website - or does total body adjustments. Some chiropractors only seem to want to adjust one or two things. Once you go to a chiropractor who is trying to fix the source of your problem and will make sure all of your joints like shoulder girdle, arms, legs, all joints are adjusted, you'd be less likely to go out of alignment again. Hang in there inspiring being!

    • @janetallison363
      @janetallison363 5 лет назад +1

      Yes...get to a chiropractor asap!!!

    • @thegingeredmuse9396
      @thegingeredmuse9396 5 лет назад +1

      I was thinking the same thing! Some of the numbness etc can also be caused by compressed nerves from spine issues. I also wonder if any chiropractors have ever participated in a little trail magic? That’d be awesome! I mean 150+ days sleeping on rocks with mats that might have fallen apart weeks ago can wreck havoc on folks

    • @lindaferguson495
      @lindaferguson495 5 лет назад

      Chiropractor, Chiropractor, Chiropractor! I agree you need to find a chiropractor for that back of yours, they work wonders and the pain is usually gone right away.. I love my chiropractor, I am a Nurse Aide with scoliosis he keeps my bones aligned and keeps me moving! I just suffered a pinched nerve over the weekend in my low back very similar to what you are going through, sharp pains when trying to get up and lay down or sit down.. My husband got a crash course on doing my job and had to take care of me helping me get up and sit or lay down until Monday came and I could get to the chiropractor.... Crack, crack, crack good as new!

    • @bradenrussell1398
      @bradenrussell1398 5 лет назад

      Kevin Smith careful with this. If you have a herniated disc or bulging disc, this could make matters much worse. I went to a chiropractor first thing when I hurt my back and although it felt a bit better, after I found out I had a herniated disc, the doctor said I could have potentially made matters much much worse. Best thing to do is see an MD and test for a bulging/herniated disc.

    Cory and Little Bee, you're doing so well. Cory, I second the suggestion to see a chiropractor and maybe you need more supportive shoes, maybe even some insoles like, "SuperFeet". Being a larger person myself, I have found both to be helpful. The Chiro for when there is an injury and then the added insoles and good shoes to speed healing. Hang in there, I'm proud of you, I would have quit long ago.

    We are watching and following you at home in our chairs on a computer, but you are doing it!! We are excited for you to get to Washington as we aren't far from the PCT and would love to offer some trail magic when you come through, or a ride somewhere, or some other need you two might have. We are about 45 miles from Mt. Rainier and really aren't too far from multiple accesses to the trail. Our son hiked the PCT last year and it was a great adventure. His trail name was Backtrack. Mosquitoes and windmills were two of his least favorites during his hike. His dad was his daily connection, when able, and we followed him on Google Earth the entire hike. You're doing a great job and your inspiration is amazing. And Little Bee is absolutely the cutest!!

    The skeeters sound terrible. I think my worst experiences in terms of bites have been in Tampa and in the Everglades. Here where I am now (north of Atlanta) the no-see-ums are a pain. If the skeeters worse there than Florida they must be rough.
    Always, one foot in front of the other. This will serve you so well, once you've completed the trail. When I'm trying hard to do something challenging, i'll remember backpacking up a steep grade, step by step (in the twilight, on one particular trip), with weight on my back, one of my dogs on his leash, a walking stick in the other hand, and only able to take one step at a time. It helps. All the Pandas are fun :) When I was facilitating adult ESL, I had three Sebastians for awhile... told them I'd call them Sebastian uno, Sebastian dos, Sebastian tres :)
    You are rockin', dude!

    If your back pain is centered in your spine, you need a chiropractor, if the pain is coming from other parts of your back, you need a deep tissue massage and probably a different pack. When did the pain start/ get worse? Was it after you got the new pack? Please stop ignoring it, fix the cause so you can enjoy your hike!

    They're 2 inches long but completely harmless. It is definitely a weird year. I would completely freak out if I saw swarms of giant wasps! You might see dragons yet!

    A possible reason for the back pain is your pack not fitting correctly. I would recommend googling or looking up a video on fitting a backpack. Also, you are not taking full advantage of your trekking poles. You can look up a video on how to properly use trekking poles. Proper form will really help with distributing the load and giving more balance and stability. Hope this helped 😀. Good luck, stay safe out there!

    I am going to hike the PCT next year but I just found out this year that I have herniated one of my discs in my lower back between L4 and S1. You could have a bulging or herniated disc that is causing you that irritation. Common symptoms are pain in the back (sharp pains when moving in certain directions and constant dull pains), and pain down your leg (either one or both). Having this doesn’t mean you can’t hike, I am still going to do the whole hike next year regardless. You just have to make sure you’re stretching (Try the Mackenzie technique) but doing the right stretching. The wrong stretching can make matters worse (I know, I was doing it wrong for a while, made it real bad). Make sure to hydrate since the longer you walk, the more your discs compress and lose their cushion. Lay down flat on your back every couple of house to let them decompress. Do hip extensions every hour, you can do 10 without getting on the ground. There are also a few exercises you can do each night (again, if this is a bulging or herniated disc, but make sure you know it’s that before starting these) that will strengthen your back and keep the muscles tight around your spine to give that disc extra support.
    I feel your pain!!!! But it doesn’t mean you can’t go on, it just means you have to be careful. Take a break every hour, stretch properly, exercise your stabilizing muscles EVERY DAY, hydrate, and make sure to keep your core strong when you bend, don’t bend with your back, bend with your legs.
    If you can, if it gets real bad, jump into see a doc and have them test your symptoms. I knew mine was bad when I was screaming practically too in pain. Best to know what the cause is and mitigate against it on the trail than not and make it worse. Again, even if it is, you can still do it! You just have to be careful :)
    Wish you the best! Can’t wait to see the upcoming days!!

    Make sure to use your trekking poles properly. You are much more likely to fall down the way you went through that patch of snow/ice. Have proper precaution. Be safe.

    Little Bee is smart about mosquitoe protection, but even with all the netting, if you sit still, the mosquitoes will find a place where the mesh is right against the skin, and they'll get their little syringes into you through the mesh.

    Your back situation could be caused also by being mineral deficient. Try to increase your salt and also potassium. You might be surprised how much it helps!!!

    People, People, People! Look at all the through hikers who have feet and knee problems. I know you can argue that it's because of all the miles, but you can't argue that most of these hikers are wearing Altra shoes.

      Roscoe goes Outdoors
      I'm his size or a lil bigger.
      My Altras do not give arch support. They do not promote a stable foot bed. Feet tend to roll in these shoes. It's probably why he keeps blowing out the sides of the Altras. My feet do better in my Merrell Ventilators, even though the newer version don't compare to the original Ventilators. Big people need supportive footwear!

      @@davidedward13 Love the idea of these shoes but they didn't work for me and my wife. We both ended up with knee pain. We had our feet evaluated at our local running store. Both of us needed better support because he have high arches. So I totally agree with you

    Cory! Listen to me. Ibuprofen will lessen the inflammation, it isn't going to mask the injury. You need to take it and see if you can still hike. See a doctor. You may have stress fractures and will need an M.R.I. In the mean time, take the ibuprofen with food and see if things improve.

    Pray for some wind. Mosquitoes can't fly in as little as a three mile per hour breeze, (so the old timers back in New Hampshire used to say).
    When you get to a town, go treat yourself to a pedicure. If you have never had one, it will be the best $35 or $40 you will spend. You will come out feeling like you have someone else’s feet.

    Corey, time see a chiropractor and perhaps a sports doctor. There are all kind of medical inserts for shoes, adjustments for your body that will effect your back, supplements that are specific to you, etc, etc. Think of your body as an athlete would, like a rider on the Tour de France. From almost 400 lbs to where you are now, WOW!

    Also rolling out your leg muscles with a foam roller can help back problems significantly. I know these tips come late and I hope you're healing now!!..

    If you have a knife try and get some pine sap and rub on your hands, a small test area to make sure it won't cause a reaction. If so, put some on your clothes. Helps to repel them. God speed!
