Its sweet looking back at street scenes from times past. Also the glory days of emigration to Canada are long gone, 70's and 80's would have been a charming time to relocate.
Imagine regenrating downtown into a walkable town with no cars like they do so well in Dutch cities... It could be done but it would take a billion dollars and 10 years work plus 10 years to plan it.
Oh please. Vancouver had the personality of a stop sign back then . We enjoy Vancouver now more than ever, *NOW* as it has way more to offer, including a cosmopolitan ethnic diversity of cultural/gastronomic choices befitting a proper world destination.
@@smallstudiodesignI respectfully disagree with you. Back then, there were events to go to almost every day of the week. Cinemas were everywhere, restaurants were interesting. There were 24 hour restaurants as well, that we all went to at 3 in the morning if we found ourselves out at that hour. Went to plays and other shows at the Vancouver East Cultural Centre. There were also 3 major Roller Rinks (that I knew of) that were well patronized by all ages and were a lot of fun, plus great exercise. We all got along well too. “The personality of a stop sign”? Where were you to arrive at that description?
Moved to Florida and grew up in Vancouver 90's. My uncle used to work on the Wise Guy and Sliders shows, and now retired, tells me he couldnt recognize it anymore. Hard not to believe that Skid Row from 2 blocks grew to reach Pender in 3 decades.
Vancouver, before Expo 86 started its downfall. at 44:50 those folks with the nets are fishing for oolichans a fishery in steady decline over the decades.
I almost don’t want to watch these videos, because I KNOW the comments will be full of “it was great then, now it’s a shithole”. So tedious. Cities are organic, they change and grow. Every decade that people have experienced was THE BEST time to be in Vancouver. Whether it’s the 40s,50s, 60s, all the way up to the 90s. I’m born and raised in Vancouver, and I’ve loved every phase, never more than the one I’m currently experiencing.
This is an excellent video. There are a lot of Vancouverites today who have no idea what this city was like 40 years ago, because they were not born yet. I can remember when Vancouver was full of the "Beautiful People" in the early '80's even much more extreme than what we see from 40:30 - 42:00 and 43:30 - 44:00........... and serious woe to the person who did not match up to the Beautiful People's physical and psychological ideals........... they were mocked, jeered and ostracized by the "Beautiful People" as useless creatures at best.......... menaced, threatened and persecuted as inferior beings at worst.

28:01 Calabria coffee house on Commercial - and it's still thriving well today!
the times back then were so much better living in Langley going to Vancouver was a treat..
Progressive and still run by sane people. Vancouver was good back then.
Sane people? Where?
Back when you could say Vancouver was a nice place to live in. It's incredible how much has been lost in the last 40 years.
like perhaps perspective?
Bring back this Vancouver, been here all my life and dont recognise it anymore. Big traffic nightmare seven days a week.

When Vancouver was normal and had order. Look at it now
and the DTES was only a sore sight full of drunks and a few homeless
I still remember "Skid Row" was contained within 2-3 blocks early 90's. NOT now where the tent adventurers reached Pender in 3 decades.
great to see one of these with sound.......................awesome, esp. because I was living in Vancouver then, and know all these areas so well
I left in '77 and regretted having done so for a number of decades. I just got back from a brief visit. You can't go home again, sadly.
Moved to Vancouver in 1963
Thank you love bug for the Video!

2024 looks like it's only getting worse 😢

No cellphones. People talking. Lovely.

Probably taken around 1984-1986
moved to Vancouver in 1987
1981 the Federal Government transferred me to Vancouver. Thankfully, I never left.

Huh, the “beautiful people”? What are you talking about? What kind of strange crowd did you hang out with? This was not a thing.
Vancouver was beautiful then and even more beautiful now.
They all spoke English too. Nice.
I bet the native peoples of this country.
Said same about Europeans
When they arrived uninvited
