- Always walk with a partner!!
This section of the Levada Norte near Quinta Grande, is only a short drive from Funchal. It’s only a fraction of the 75k length Levada that brings water from the north through the Ribeiro Brava Valley to the south side of the island. The start is easily accessible by car and parking is available on the road, where the road is a bit wider, just a short walk from the Levada start. This is an easy hike in and out, but you will encounter a few rougher sections, but nothing a person in good physical health can manage. The trail is sometimes smooth but at times rocky, so you need to watch your step. If you are afraid of height, then this could be a problem. After a rain the trail might be slippery in various sections. Hiking boots or solid walking shoes are recommended. Safe the sandals for the beach! This is an interesting section as you will see how many Madeiran people live and cultivate the steep gardens. It provides some normal vegetation section with eucalyptus threes, bamboo and other native species. It never gets boring.
The levada's seem like great hiking trails all over Madeira. The slopes are generally gentle, as they follow water, so unless there's a waterfall, it should be a gradual climb everywhere. I am considering Portugal as a place to live but am attracted by the better value in Ecuador. Perhaps you could comment on your decision to be in Portugal?
I am not just been there 3 times for usually 5-6 weeks. Its attractive to us as we get the best bang for our buck (can$) its a real safe island and the climate is very nice for Canadian standard. We are planning a trip back in 2022.
Sorry for the late reply. We are not residence of Madeira just frequent visitors trying to get away from the cold weather😉
