    Your painting turned out beautiful, but a good artist can create amazing work with even low-end supplies like Crayola or Prang. Arteza has really been pushing hard for the most talented influencers to show off their products, which may be misleading people into thinking it is a professional art supply. It is much cheaper for a reason, and while great for beginners, it is chalky and does not allow for convenient pan use. After drying in the pan, mine cracked into tiny pieces and fell apart, unlike the higher end student grade paints like Cotman or Van Gogh. I was able to rub my finger on top of a finished painting and the pigment rubbed off, like chalk pastel due to the binder/fillers. This is not like higher quality watercolors with a good gum arabic ratio. I saw several colors use fugitive pigments, yet have higher star lightfast ratings than it should. I'm not saying they are a bad paint (for the price), but I feel like people may be getting the wrong impression that they are a higher quality than low-end student grade paint. I won't go into detail about the pigment list, but much of the 60 colors are convenience mixes of the first 10 or so colors in the set... Probably more than anyone really needs. It might be better to have a few really nice primary mixing colors from a professional brand (maybe Daniel Smith Essentials 6 or even a Paul Rubens pan set of 24) vs the same price to have a lesser quality but so many pre-mixed colors. The pigment load is also not comparable to professional grade, which I only mention because if you think only in terms of paint tube size it's not a fair comparison (pro grade will use less paint). I'm sure I won't be popular for this opinion, apologies if offending anyone - just hoping to help those wondering about alternatives :)

      No not at all! I find your input very valuable and would agree to many points . 😊 I think for beginners it's a good option and the brands you mentioned are good options as well. 😊

      Kimberly Crick Art Well said. I also think people may be misled on Arteza’s lightfast information. I’ve contacted the company twice, and was told both times that “+” is excellent, “++” is very good, and “+++” is only good. The star rating is backwards to what people mind think. That star rating system also does not seem to make sense when you compare how lightfast the pigments are in other brands. I do love playing with their gouache though in my journals. PS. I too think Lioba’s art is amazing.

      I have the 60 color Arteza gouache set. It was a real disappointment. I purchased the set because I believed that with so many colors, I would have large amounts of consistent colors and I wouldn't have to mix. Yes, there are lots of colors, but they are mostly garish and the only way to achieve the more muted colors I prefer, is to mix. The 12 pearl colors in the set are weak and don't cover well, so they are a total waste in my opinion. I did one painting in my sketchbook using Arteza gouache and the paints are rubbing off on the adjoining page. Because I was so disappointed in the Arteza gouache set, I invested in Holbein gouache, and those are much preferred. They come in a beautiful color range, they reactive extremely easily and have a heavy pigment load. My Arteza set is now languishing. I wish I hadn't purchased them. I agree with Kimberly's advice about investing in a quality set of fewer colors rather than spending on the poor quality Arteza set with all those colors.

    Love your work so much, Lioba. So beautiful. All of it.
    To blend gouache, lay two color patches next to each other and then take a clean, damp brush and brush over and along the line where the two colors meet. This should cause them to blend out into each other.

  • @solvrium6414
    @solvrium6414 5 лет назад +13

    Gouache is actually very easy to blend (in my opinion) because it constantly get reactivated when you put water on it. So you basically just need to block out your color and use a damp brush to blend everything, it's not like acrylic which doesn't bulge once it's dry. Myriam Tillson use gouache a lot and I watched her video on it when I wanted to start using gouache opaquely (I used to use it like watercolor, very lightly with a lot of water) so yeah watch her video if you're looking for more infos ✨

    I have artwork I made 18 years ago with really cheap watercolor paint that still has full color because I barnish the pieces with spray varnish from the hardware store, those non toxic ones that are used for preserve on cars and boats lol

      Rubi Estrada So would spray fixate work the same? I have a can for charcoal and graphite.

    • @lostanhellss
      @lostanhellss 5 лет назад +6

      @@milktea543 I use profesional spray fixate since 12 years, and works the same, I do more than one thin layer for thickening the varnish layer, if you dont mind the gloss on the paper it works great

      Rubi Estrada Thanks for the tip! Surprised that I don’t hear or see this kind of advice anywhere else. I had suspicions it’d have potentials but never really had any concrete inputs from anyone else. I’ll definitely give this a try

    • @lostanhellss
      @lostanhellss 5 лет назад +2

      @@milktea543 thats because you often discover these by mistake or experimenting, the first time I do these was because when I was a teenager my father buy a can of paint for my bike and explain to me that the varnish was made to protect the paint on the bike from the sun, rain, etc, I just think that would work in my paintings, lol, when I learn that the spray varnishes or fixatives for art exists I just made the change :)

    • @milktea543
      @milktea543 5 лет назад

      Rubi Estrada Thanks so much! Now I can worry a little less with my works. But of course, I’ll test first with whatever brand of fixative I got.

    I find it kind of amusing how much you stress the importance of different paper and paint/pencil combinations. All other artists will always say in their tutorials that, "The supplies don't matter, they won't make your art better. Just choose what you like." And I used to believe it a lot but over the years I realized that it does make a difference, albeit a subtle one. It all depends on what you're trying to do.

    I was going to a watercolour workshop with an Australian watercolour artist. He had certain colours that he wanted us to bring along. My sister was coming with me and I had all of the colours but she couldn’t really afford to buy her own tin pallet. We were at Kmart and found some plastic pallets with colours in them being sold out for $3. So what I did was I am ditched the colours and squirted in my tubes into that palette. It was so funny because the tutor said all these cheap Chinese paints are just terrible they’re awful you never gonna get anywhere with them! I said yes that’s true but the pallet was only three dollars we ditch the colours and squeeze the ones in that you wanted us to use. He laughed and said how ingenious!

    Hab mir heute das 24er Set Gouache geholt da seh ich gard dein Video , schauen wir mal.Hab noch nie mit sowas gearbeitet,bin bisher mit meinem kleinen kasten Igor Trestoi Aqurellfarben gut klargekommen.Wenns richtig leuchten soll hab ich Aqurelltuschen, die liegen mir eher aber recht aufwendig zum handhaben.Aber toll im Material Mix. Deckende Töne sin dann toll wenn was übermalen will.Zudem arbeite ich gerne mit Tusche und Feder das ergenzt sich toll, da eh Mix Media mache.Acryl ist auch mein Ding ,da bin inzwischen aber der Ultra Abstrakte geworden und verbau Material und experimente mit greifbaren Texturen ,streugut,Papier und Pasten

    If you wanted your work to be permanent you would never used a water based colour like gouache?...especially if you were selling it to an unsuspecting customer...you would need to photograph your work immediately after to have a permanent file for yourself. Several months down the track the gouache in your artwork will/may begin to fade. Gouache was used in many graphic art studios, it was cheap and easy to use but had no permanent colour about it, once it was photographed the artwork was filed away in the dark or simply thrown away. Maybe things are different now? I know Windsor and Newton advise against varnishing your gouache work and say that doing so will affect your work, they also say that a few colours may not fade but most will, having only a 10 year expectancy...
