  • More than 200 people including from Aotearoa's largest iwi, Ngāpuhi, gathered outside Parliament in Wellington on Monday to oppose the repeal of Section 7AA of the Oranga Tamariki Act.
It came as a select committee met to hear submissions on the removal of the legislation, which legally binds Oranga Tamariki to improve and report on outcomes for Māori in care.
Many of the iwi members travelled to the capital city from Northland, almost the entire length of North Island, to oppose the legislation, which is part of the National and ACT coalition agreement.

Co-governance is in the treaty. Brits replaced rangatiratanga (run by local chiefs) into sovereignty (run by UK royals). The treaty house was set on fire but the treaty document still exists showing the details along with its burnt frayed edges. We've tried the colonial system for a hell of a long time and now is the time to give the actual documented deal a fair go.

The few entitled elites who have never been in Māori shoes have no right to speak for Maori! Aotearoa is fed up with the continued attempts to divide our country! Leave Section 7aa alone.

How many Mokopuna lives have been ruined by their own whanau as in abused assaulted violently how many have been subjected to threats of violence from within their whanau and extended whanau how often are these things covered up by whanau and go unreported what are the statistics..
Being a survivor of sexual abuse from within my own Maori whanau I know full well how destructive this type of thing is yet the perpetrators go unpunished because the perpetrators are protected by their own families/whanau it's sickening like what the hell is wrong with Maori society.

She says that “one third of all children in care are from Nga Puhi” as if she’s proud of it.
Rather than performative nonsense on the steps of Parliament, maybe Nga Puhi should focus on the problem they have with parenting.
