All that was left of the earth there were scorched fields and destroyed cities, what can be saved? The people were doomed, Breen literally saved humanity by surrendering, since if they had continued to resist, perhaps there would have been no people at all
Breen can't just blame Gordon for the Black Mesa Incident he was at fault too for even accepting a pure crystal by one of the most suspicious characters in the Half Life Universe and pushing their machine that caused the Resonance Cascade.

The newspaper's headline. "Earth Surrenders" is so creepy to me for some reason. Like the humans spent their entire life creating a world where they could live in peace and the Combines just messed up everything. They had better technology, weapons, and army.
I always thought about that too yeah, like its a really concerning, horrific headline

half - life as a game series gives me a strange feeling. A mix of mystery and accomplishment. I can't explain it.
That's the charm of the whole series, there's so much to see, the story, characters, it's world and universe just feels so alive, it's one my favorite just for the way it's presented to the player, we only get some crumbs of information about the story, but that's the right amount to keep the mystery alive and us interested in seeking it. Finding answers, many being just assumptions, but it's more than enough for the community to keep going, but at the end, we may never get all the answer and in a way, it is for the best.
I mean, if you think about it, Gordon created the very world they now live in

Adrian Shepperd: A man who was sent to a mission he was never supposed to return from and got saved for the price of his soul.

Well Barney was trough a lot, he saved scientists, he helped Alyx, Kleiner and Eli, he was leader of resistance
This just makes me wonder if the games were intended to be this complex or the community just keeps looking at every individual detail, questioning all aspects from the series and trying their best at finding the answers. I guess it could be a bit of both, since the story is so complex, yet so simple if you don't get deep enough. And still, the wait for a direct continuation of the story has yet to come, I just can't imagine what things would come with time, I just hope Valve makes the right choices, but only time will tell.

This fits well because in a technical sense, this is all Gordon’s fault that the world is in ruins. Even though the whole Science Team was involved in the Black Mesa Incident it was Gordon who pushed the crystal into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer.
Half-Life 2’s earth in my opinion, has got to be one of the most bleak and depressing apocalyptic scenarios I’ve seen in media.

Dr.Breen kinda has a point, all the rebels ended up doing was making life far worse for any normal citizen. Everyone now has to suffer more than they already had too. The only people that benefited from what happened in City 17 was the Rebellion. Just because you fight for freedom, doesn't mean that is the outcome.
Ironically the same statement could be made of Breen, what exactly is it that he has "created"? All the resources of Earth have been shipped off-world to other places, and almost all infrastructure apart from maybe the citadel itself is simply utilizing the decaying pre-existing buildings. Population? certainly, that's not being created is it haha. The few things he has created have been so horrific such as Grunts and Stalkers it would be a mercy to not make anything at all.

this is the stupidest opinion I've ever heard about this game
I don't think it's worse to die free than to live in servitude. Whether the rebels win or not, their spirits are already free, and that means a lot when our lives are so short. Do you know what the number one regret of elderly people in hospice care is? That they didn't take the risk to go after what they believed in when they had the opportunity. The ones who follow the combine are already dead inside.
