C.I.G. gets such a bad rep for delays, but it's a consequence of how they started out as well as how most other games are developed. Usually, until a studio announces a game, it spends years in private development. And usually without the public knowing about it until the last year or two of development. For instance, Starfield actually started development some time in 2013, with a game engine that required comparatively little modification, with a budget over $400 million and an established studio. Up until the last month or so, most people don't get to put their hands on any game play. It's easy to see why people don't realize how much time it takes to make games...even easier to see why people get impatient with C.I.G. everyone is used to thinking it's a two or three year project.
Let that sink in. The middling dumpster fire Starfield is, has been in development from nearly the same time with an equally mindblowing budget. And all I can really think of that they managed to add to their engine as far as "Groundbreaking" tech is the ship designer. In the meantime, C.I.G. has managed to completely overhaul the game engine (converting to 64-bit precision, Planet tech, Mining Gameplay, Salvaging Gameplay, weather systems & Hazards, unified 1-3rd person perspective, the removal of loading screens, Face-Over-I.P, Eye-tracking, Inverse Kinematics for foot-leg articulation, etc the list goes on), adding the complexity of multiplayer, and with the task of building the company up from less than 10 employees at the end of the kickstarter to multiple studios worldwide. All the while keeping it accessible and playable.
Put the unfinished Alpha of Star citizen next to "completed" Starfield and it's not even close when you compare the two. Consider how much C.I.G. has managed to accomplish in the time it has been in development. And then consider how little was accomplished in starfield. Keep in mind, C.I.G. is actually building two games at once. Is it REALLY that difficult to understand why it's taking time to make these two games? I put to you that if anything, the progress and quality that they have put forward to date is far beyond anything any game studios to date have been able to accomplish, and that some people's expectations don't take into account the amount of development that has been poured into the project.

SQ 42 and Citizen aren't outliers in terms of development time. It's just that everyone are aware about when it started due to the crowdfunding.

@@KeroValentineThere's quite a bit of lore in the Star Citizens universe.
The United Empire of Earth has just recovered from a dictatorship and a cold war with alien empire.
They've defeated another alien empire and settled their home planet, leaving their population as second class citizens of the United Empire of Earth.
They're trading with a third alien alien race, one where slavery and banditry is common.
And there's one last alien race that has never had friendly relations with humanity, the Vanduuls at the end of that video.
The Vanduuls out match the United Empire of Earth, the only reason they haven't crushed the empire yetbis that they're not unified but multiple nomadic clans and warbands attacking one by one, often defeating the empire, but so far being stopped eventually and so far not necessarily focussed on humanity.
They have bigger hangar ships then the UEE navy does, with more fighters.
They're better adapted to zero-G fighting, and just in general really, really scary.
The UEE navy is *seriously* stretched thin, and isn't able to deal with all of the pirates etc.
Under the dictatorship the UEE has driven intelligent species to extinction, terraforming their home planet to *our* needs despite dooming them, and other races are a bit weary of us as a result.
We're *trying* to make up for that by building a new planet from scratch for ourselves, so we won't need to take others, "proving" what we're genuinely trying to not be a threat.
And while the UEE senate has representatives from the various UEE planets the individual planets might have multiple nations, and sometimes they're at war with each other...
We're talking about a universe with 100 star systems discovered so far.
You can look up the maps and the wiki on the website telling you more about the lore.

Squadron 42 has quite a few big name actors on the cast.
Gary Oldman - Admiral Ernst Bishop, he had that big "hold the line" speech. (Admiral of the 2nd fleet and commander of the UEES Retribution, the only Retribution class super dreadnaught, and the largest human ship in lore, designed specifically to fight Vanduul Kingships)
Mark Hamill - Lt. Cdr. Steve 'Old Man' Colton, he appears several times throughout the trailer (flight instructor aboard the UEES Stanton, will play a sort of mentorship role to the player character) he also played a character in one of Chris Robert's older games, Wing Commander.
Mark Strong - Captain Thomas Wade. the bald guy you recognized. (the commander of the UEES Krugiri, a Bengal class carrier, and a member of the 2nd fleet)
John Rhys-Davies - Randall Graves, he appears briefly at 15:43. (Chief of security aboard the Archon Base space station and a UEE Navy veteran)
Liam Cunningham - Captain Noah White, he appears at 17:18, one of the people you recognized (commander of the UEES Stanton, an Idris class frigate, and a member of the 2nd fleet, as well as the ship the player character and Mark Hamill's character are stationed on)
Gillian Anderson - Captain Rachael MacLaren, the captain the player character talks to in the beginning. (commander of the UEES gauntlet, which is a Javelin class destroyer, and a member of the 2nd fleet. she is also the daughter of Admiral Bishop)
Henry Cavill - Ryan Enright, he doesn't show up in this trailer much, but I'm pretty sure that's him in the fighter in the opening shot (pilot in the 2nd fleet, not much is known about the character yet) he's actually the one who reached out to CIG asking to be in it, and (at least according to rumor) even offered to do it for free because he didn't want to take money away from development.
Andy Serkis - Thul'Oquray (a member of the Vanduul, an alien race that are the main antagonists of the game. he doesn't show up in the trailer, though you can see other vanduul at the very end.)
this universe has a LOT of lore, there are a lot of good videos about it on youtube if you wanna go down that rabbit hole

For a little context: the reason it's taken so long is because everything they wanted to do (or rather, what Chris wanted in his game) didn't exist tech wise. So they had to spend years R&D'ing groundbreaking new tech (some of which will have multiple applications outside of Star Citizen/SQ42) to get the game to look, run, and achieve a lot of what you're seeing in the video.
For instance, the 64-bit floating point precision for large world simulation is something only the StarEngine is capable of right now, as it can pinpoint and track entities down to the hundrendth-million scale. For comparison, the UE5.4 (the upcoming release in 2024) affords double floating point precision only to the tenth-million scale (approximately 88 million km). Epic is still struggling to achieve stability at that scale, which is why we don't have any open-world/open-space games made in the UE4 or UE5 to that scale. They're also tracking up to 2 million entities per frame, which is something no other engine right now can achieve in real-time without crashing.
So basically, they had to spend a TON of time, money, resources, and engineering power to bring a lot of this tech to life over the years, and you're seeing some of that culminate in the StarEngine/Squadron 42 videos. Of course, as you said, whether or not this results in an actual fun game to play? That remains to be seen. I've mostly backed them for the tech advances they've made that will drastically alter the course of the software industry thanks to scalable technologies like PES + dynamic server meshing, which could technically be applied to enterprise software distribution services as well.

@Vinterloft There was no engine with good enough netcode to do what they wanted when it came to the fidelity that they wanted to achieve. They were always going to have to build bespoke tech for what they wanted to do.

    • @Arthillis
      @Arthillis 8 месяцев назад

@@Vinterloft I dont know if that is a downside or not since some of the lead programmers making this game and helping to build the code for it used to be lead programmers and creators of the original cry-engine. So in a way it's like Cry-Engine new and improved. The only reason its called star engine is because of issues they had with the cry engine company, they swapped to lumber yard which used cryengine so they wouldn't be beholden to the crytech company. Then they changed so much of the code that not much of the original cryengine is used. But several of the people changing the code used to work for cryengine. Because they have changed so much of the code they are allowed legally to name the engine as a new engine. Thus Star Engine.

    • @fwg1994
      @fwg1994 4 месяца назад

@@Billy-bc8pk But there were engines that would have taken less work to get where they are now (whether they could license a version of the engine on their budget is another story though). Like a lot of the tech they had to develop just came out of the box in a lot of other engines. Sure, the big, flashy tech needed to be built from scratch, but stuff like the UI system or updating the networking to sync everything between every player, regardless of distance between each other were things that took years of development time and just come standard in most other engines.
They also could have just started entirely from scratch on an engine. With as extensive of an overhaul as they've done on CryEngine, it probably would've been faster. Though it also would've been much longer before they got something tangible in player hands. Likely wouldn't have taken off with crowdfunding if it didn't have shiny graphics to market itself on.

    • @Billy-bc8pk
      @Billy-bc8pk 4 месяца назад

@@fwg1994There is literally no engine from 2012 with out-of-the-box networking solutions that they had to develop and design. And not one engine from 2012 was available that would have required LESS work than the work they had to do regardless. Plus, starting from scratch would have taken even longer because CryEngine came with a lot of bespoke features they didn't have to design or redesign, such as procedural blended actor IK for environmental pathfinding (which was a big selling point for Crysis), global illumination, and embedded vehicular support. Designing all of that from scratch would have added half a decade's worth of development time to the project.

Star citizen was a project by 13 people in 2012 they were 700 in 2018 and now they are over 1200
In 2013 they were building their studios from scratch now they have 5 big studios around the globe
The developpement really began in 2014/2015 (where they were 160 ish btw)
And we know them since the begining of the project not even the developement that's why to us they seems to be in developpement for too long
But in reality games like RDR2 with 2000 devs since the start were in developement for 8 Years
Same with Cyberpunk which we all know how it was at release.
And don't forget CIG are developping 2 games One MMO and one AAA + their own Engine
So to me they aren't slow at all in fact they are pretty fast.
I've backed the project since 2014 and to me it was amazing to see the progress throught those years.
I've already had more fun in star citizen than 90% of games out their.
Keep in mind 100% of the money they get are for the game and the engine they develop you can't say that for other games out there.
Except for 40 millions which was donate by really rich investor for promoting SQ42 but that's a different story.
I am sure at 100% it will release before we die, i'm a dev so now i know where they are and with this scale of the project polishing phase can take 1 or 2 years at worst.
But i prefer they take the time to deliver us the best game possible than another mess like Cyberpunk or more recently starfield.
And if you want where they come from for SQ42 you can watch 2017 vertical slice keep in mind in 2017 Andromeda was released in my language we called it "Andromerda" merda mean shit.

Squadron 42 I think we will get a hard release date by next CitCon (October) or Xmas at the latest, I have been a backer from the beginning. My analogy is they have essentially been building a mansion to move into and enjoy one day but in the mean time they needed to keep you sheltered with a little busted up house that has some broken windows and doors. The progress has been slow and consistent for many years, this last couple years has seen a decent up tick in content coming out and this past year has been fairly good. PES (persistent entity streaming) was released earlier this year and was quite a mess but it was a necessary major stepping stone to get the game ready for server meshing which is the last foundational piece to get into place, this will allow Star Citizen to become much larger and more capable. The company moved a lot of developers over onto Squadron 42 for a year or 2 now to really get it to where it is now, all tech in SQ42 feeds directly into SC and visa-versa. Now that SQ42 is feature complete they have moved devs back to SC to push things forward for server meshing, this last CitCon really showed off what they have been working on and should be coming online over the next year. There really are too many aspects of the games to go into detail about but I'm quite excited for the next 12 months. Btw some other actors in SQ42 are Henry Cavill, Mark Strong (the bald guy), John Rhys-Davies, Ben Mendelsohn and Andy Serkis. I think something worth noting is that SQ42 is in the same universe as Star Citizen but doesn't follow the same exact ambitions of SC's "everything game". I'd expect you'll have a good amount of liberty navigating the world, but it's still gonna be a somewhat linear, mission based story.

It's always hard to know when to be hyped for this game but as someone who has been around from near the very beginning I think it's time. The amount of work going into this is quite mind blowing and it's easy to be excited but it's also important to manage expectations and understand that bugs are an inevitability. As for fan theories go the next citizen Con in a year is what many would assume to be the earliest possible time for this to release. The bald guy I believe was an actor named Mark Strong and I don't think he would be a bad guy as you saw the are aliens and those aliens are not friendly, they speak a language of the same name as their species which is Vanduul and there is a translation of what he said and it was not "we come in peace". This video largely does not cover story and setting but those things are generally known. If you didn't know much about the game from before as many mention there is an event from the 17th to try it for free for a couple weeks. Bugs are highly present but for the veteran players its fairly reasonable and most bugs can be avoided.

So they wanted to add more subtle interactions for the female player character so they brought back the actress to do some more scenes.

Star Citizen: The MMO (There isn't a whole lot of storied content in this game yet as most of the focus has been on Squadron 42, but it still has a decent number of things to do. Most of which is player driven)
Star Engine: (The other video your reacted to was a showcase of this) The backbone of both games.
    All being developed simultaneously.
Squadron 42 is now in the "polish" phase (feature complete as stated in this video) which means more focus can be put onto Star Citizen. The game engine itself is also pretty much complete.

They have a release date nailed in, they just didn't tell us, because of the bad rep they got in the past when they communicated one. Other than that, SQ42 release by the end of next year, or first half of 2025 at the latest. Gameplay wise, the choices that you will make in the game will impact and move over even to the things you will be able to do in Star Citizen, after you finish the campaign and decide to move in the multiplayer universe. We don't know exactly what the gameplay will be, but we have strong hints that at least will be decent or above average. We'll have to wait and see. Although even if it's average, combined with the storytelling the visuals, the scale, all that tech they put in all these years, not to mention the A-list actors, it's shaping to be a AAA title. And if the gameplay is top tier, it will knock everything out of the park.

just to add a bit the trailer you see here is an actual ingame footage so its not pre-rendered CGI, also just abit of lore, the first scene where you see a fleet of battle ships, that was the Battle of Vega II ( thus you see on screen it was took place on Vega system), and it was fought on year 2945 between the United Empire of Earth (UEE) and the Vanduul. It was sparked when a large Vanduul Clan led by a Kingship jumped to the Vega system and attacked the planet Aremis (Vega II). After a desperate battle against overwhelming forces, the United Empire of Earth Navy's (UEEN) 2nd Fleet commanded by Admiral Ernst Bishop ( played by actor Gary Oldman) managed to turn the tide with the destruction of the kingship that drove the Vanduul survivors out of the system. The attack elevated concern about the Vanduul threat and led to a military action to reclaim Human systems lost to the Vanduul. This marked the first time in history that Human forces destroyed a Vanduul Kingship.
If you play SC the timeline will be after the story of SQ42, so SQ42 is like a prequel. Vanduul is the alien race that you see at the end of the video ( those 3 tall looking aliens with spear like guns)

Gameplay footage is sometimes is stuttery bc it's still not optimized, bc they're showing off how it actually is right now.
I think it genuinely could get released within a year, but for the sake of safety, I'm guessing within two years. They still need to tweak, polish, balance, and optimize the game, but at least all of the tech, all of the levels, etc, are in the game and working (from what I understand lol) - so it's a question of, "how long could that possibly take? a year? better double it to be safe lol"
At least I know it will release in a highly polished, highly optimized state, unlike many games in the recent past *cough cough*, so I personally don't mind waiting for it to reach that state.

lol just finished watching your starengine reaction and recomended you watch this but you already have :)
Cutscenes are all in engine during gameplay not pre-rendered. we are supposed to even have the ability to disengage the cinematic camera and play during some cutscene dialogue much like in half-life2 though it sounds like there will be knock on effects with our NPC relationships if we're disrespectful etc.
The mood was melancholy because they are patrolling after sensors detected an alien incursion in the system and they don't expect to survive an encounter with the Vanduul, they've been wiping out entire colonies that humanity have established on worlds near their boarder.
Lol, so many of us got duped by that drone footage and thought it was an in-game preview of earth.
Framerate isn't good cause it's not optimized yet just feature complete, still a year plus of polish to go.
FPS combat is a little on the less hardcore side but they are aiming for realistic/immersive, in the end though i think the rule of cool and how the gameplay feels overrides any of that for the developers. You can test out the current version in the StarMarine module of SC during the free-fly event this month if you like.
Lol, that guy does get type casted as a badguy a lot but idk doubt they need that betrayal dynamic from him.
Most of that graphical improvement outside of retextures is lighting and they aren't even showcasing their raytracing work in this trailer it's going to look even better.

OG backer holding the line. The Wing Commander series was my fav as a kid and why I tossed money at this on blind faith when I heard about it. Chris Roberts has never made target deadlines on time ....ever.... but he knows the formula to making good action story games with attention to immersive detail and pushing tech to the limits. $600M took 5 ppl in a garage with nothing to building up a software studio, a game engine, starting an MMO, a multiplayer arena service, and a single player game in SQ42 all at the same time. Money well spent imo even with the fuckups along the way.
Next Citcon/IAE is the soonest we could possibly see SQ but who knows. In AAA games polish is a 1-2 year process on average. They did start polish in the spring of this year according to the monthly reports and likely provided what we saw in this vid to show the new stuff. They said it would be ~50/50 flight and FPS with social stories involving the cast throughout it all. CR games do have a formula to them so if you like classic scifi hero origin stories and tropes or liked Wing Commander/Freelancer you will probably enjoy it.
The bald guy is Mark Strong from Sherlock Holmes and The Kingsman movies iirc. Andy Serkis (LOTR Golem) plays the aliens. Liam Cunningham (GOT) is your first ship's captain after graduating flight school as a new rookie pilot assigned to the Old Man's wing at the beginning of the player story. Mark Hamil and John Rhys Davies were in the original Wing Commander series which helped start the trend of getting actors into games with choose your adventure live acted scene story telling in the 1980s. Seeing them together again is nostalgic af and is exactly the formula I was hoping for that they teased in the vertical slice game play demo in 2016. All those locations in the new preview are re-dos of the vertical slice demo of chapter 2 as the before shots in this vid and look really good so far. Hopefully they get it out in the next year and finally make the haters eat salt.

the game has a purpose, if you want story driven campaign, SQ42 is the one and its specifically for single player ( you will learn more about the sc lore), SC on the other hand is the sandbox multiplayer in the persistent universe ( PU), where there are some missions you can take but because it is sandbox, you can pretty much do anything you want, like I was with several friends the other day and we just did some activities which maybe bit unusual for normal players who prefer scripted storyline like those games Bethesda, but it was quite fun for us, we were at one time flying on atmosphere in Daymar and just try to jump from our ship in space either just with spacesuit we have, or jumping off with ground vehicle lol....kinda silly i know but its fun. Every now and then there will be global event that any players can participate with good rewards , like Jump town ( which is leaning more into pvp) or Siege of Orison ( pve focusing on FPS - first person shooter) and Xenothreat and so on.
You can pretty much play SC in any role you like, be a pirate and just interdict cargo ships and steal their loot ( this can be pvp or pve), or if you like to be space trucker and hauling many cargos for profits, you can do that too, or be miners and sell your mined resources, or you like to do some medical, rescuing injured player on the verse, or just wanna be explorer, and go around and so on. or just go in game and have a chill and do salvaging out in space lol , I think once server meshing is fully implemented, the server will be more stable

Squadron 42 is not star citizen. Cloud imperium games are making 2 games with the same Engine. Star Citizen is the mmo more sandbox and Squadron 42 is a cinematic story driven space adventure in the spirit of wing commander made by chris roberts that is also the main guy at the head of star citizen and SQ42. Sq42 wont be as open as star Citizen its more of a linear story, they will use the power of the engine tho to almost never cut or have loading... so if we go on a section of a planets it will be inr eal time but i dont think the story will push us to explore an entire planet like in star citizen... Its supposed to be the game that build a big part of the lore and attachement for Star citizen as its in the same universe 20 years before star citizen.
I dont know if its still in the plan, but they were saying that you could play your SQ42 character in Star citizen after completing Sq42.
And another thing to reminds... chris Roberts is a guy that have the most attention to details and thats why those project took so long, also the fact that they had tom create all the tools to modify lumberyard engine into The star engine... they almost changed it 80 percent.
Another thing to note we often talk about graphic downgrades in video game.... in that case we wont see any downgrade but maybe the opposite because in this demo of sq42 and even the Demo of Star engine, they have the same lighting system that is currently used in Star Citizen but in the next 7-8 months they plan to integrate Ray tracing and global illimination in the engine, so the lighting in sq42 might even be more relaistic than they already are at launch.
This project took a long time because 1 . they were making 2 games.
Sq42 was the main focus for almosy 7 years of those 11 years This projectwas in developpement.
80 percent of the employees were on sq42 most of the time.
thats long, very long, butthey had to anyway build the engine, they could not have added that much more to star citizen anyway because they were missing the server tech to expand star citizen as they wanted. So they worked on tech and sq42 at the same times.
Important to note that Sq42 episode 1 because its a story that is supposed to be told in 3 episode so 2 other game should fallow.
One of the reason sq42 is so important is that if its a big success Cloud imperium games will be able to have 2 big team after, 1 team that work on sq42 episode 2 and 3 and 1 big team that work on star citizen full time..
For the Polish phase of Sq42 i would not expect it to Release in 2024, but i have a good feeling for october 2025 in 2 years we will play it i think.

a polish phase can take a year (like zelda BOTW) personally I'm pretty confident in that time frame, I'm may be too optimistic but I think it is possible to have a release date around may or june, but still worth case: the game will be out in 2 years

I dunno if anyone has pointed this out .. when you were speculating about the players character .. the part of the video when they're reading the mail and it keeps changing faces is a reference to the character creation. The Capital ships' captains are NPCs - you play as a grunt in the squadron flying single seater fighters and doing missions on the ground.

SQ42 is going to comprise 4 'chapters' overall. IIRC all the acting/performance mocap has been completed for all the chapters, so the whole campaign/story is complete. How good will it really be? For clues we can look back to Chris Roberts 1990 space combat game "Wing Commander" which during development was called "Squadron". WC won Computer Gaming World's 'Game of the Year' title, both for being a) exciting to play, b) having a compelling story, and c) raising the bar for technical achievement, design and story for the gaming industry. SQ42 is essentially WC with updated tech...EXCEPT its not just 'WC in 3D/1080p'.
WC1 and WC2 were much the same in tech and graphics, but the story was continued and expanded. WC3, 4 and 'Prophecy' used live action mixed with sets and CGI for cut scenes (Mark Hamill, Malcom McDowell, Tom Wilson and John Rhys Davies being the most notable actors in these) and graphics went 3D of course.
Over the 5 WC games the player character variously bonded and or challenged other characters ) all of whom had a backstory/distinct personality. There were arguments, moral choices, sacrifices and deaths, and betrayals. There were combat missions, escort missions, rescue missions on planets, infiltration missions, repair missions, love interests, and deaths that resulted from decisions and /or the skills of the player. WC I guess went from being an RPG to an interactive space-opera movie, with the player as an imperfect hero.
The Wing Commander series was the most thrilling and engaging PC game I ever played (COD 1 and 2, and the Tomb Raider series, including TR 2013 are close, maybe equal for me.) Chris Roberts has a long history of programming skills, story-telling, development and even movie production, and he's pretty much always not just made good/great games, but he's also often innovated on the technology side. I have no reason to believe SQ42 is going to be 'meh'.

So I originally backed the game in 2012, and have been following the development closely. I think there is a real chance of a beta test for SQ42 sometime next year (2024).
Assuming that the game is actually feature complete, and the game simply needs optimization / polish passes in places, I think that’s realistic.
Also, in terms of hardware, I’m currently running StarCitizen Multiplayer on an old AMD system with a 1080ti, and I typically get ok framerates.

What people don't understand about CIG is this: The game comes first, money is a byproduct of the quality of the game itself.
All of the backers of this game are tired of empty promises by all the so called triple A studios out there making pure garbage
year after year, rushed, buggy cash grab pieces of garbage.
1 - The gameplay you're seeing is minimal, they've tried hard not to spoil the story of the game.
2 - All that you see is in-game footage there isn't any archaic obsolete full CGI cutscenes breaking immersion in the game.
3 - If anything cyberpunk copied SQ42 not the other way around.
4 - @21:11 Attention to detail, don't you hate it when a gun simply teleports to your hands instead of naturally reaching for it?
They developed a whole system just so we could have that feeling of realism.

As an early backer from Kickstarter back in 2014 I have no problem waiting even longer for SQ42 and Star Citizen. Because you sure as heck will never get this kind of dedication to a game from a AAA publisher. And this is why so many people back and support both these games. The gaming Industry as a whole has already failed us this will hopefully set the example for how games should be made. Balder's Gate 3 is already a good example.

But someone made a very good point that they stated, established devs are always pushed to unrealistic deadlines, these guys set their own and just say it’ll be ready when it’s ready. It’s a dreamers project and they want it to be perfect. Their budget hasn’t been assigned by a company it has been handed over by players who want to see it made.

The actors came in when the game achieved about 40 mill USD, so not likely they got a huge part of the 600 mill. But who knows what their deal was, and Henry Cavil is also in it ;) it was his voice in one of the ships at the beginning :)
And about the cinematics, they are made to be cut mid sentence and still flow without interuption if you the player chose to.
The reason why he didnt give a official estimate is because they missed previous deadlines, as your impression about Star Citizen reveal, and many many others :)
But the usual Polish Phase time for games, is 1-2 Years, so I expect two years :) As I believe they will not release a broken/buggy game. They come to far, to do that mistake!

Squadron 42 is the most detailed massive game ever made, it will set new standards in gaming. It will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. It is not constructed to be like other action games, you create a character and live the life of that character during a time of war. There are hundreds of characters in the game. It is not simply a 'do mission' go back to ship, choose next mission. Everything happens in the game according to a timeline, and you choose how to go about achieving the objectives you have been given. You will have time off duty to engage in a range of activities and visit many places. It is an open world free roam experience, just like the Star Citizen open world.
You will have to use your intelligence, it is not simply a 'go kill bad guys' type game. You'll have to make choices, difficult choices, you make relationships with the characters that affect your overall experience of the whole game universe. There is a mystery to solve.
Squadron 42 takes place in the same universe as Star Citizen only it's in the recent past. The character you create will be the character you can take into the Star Citizen game when you retire from the military, all your personal history logs and possessions go with you. The choices you make in Squadron 42 will affect how the NPC's treat you in Star Citizen. You will go to some of the same places and meet some of the same people / factions in both games. The Star Citizen AI NPC's will know who you are (that famous pilot from the war), some don't like the UEE especially the military, some will think you're the hero.

Think of Star Citizen as a galactic economy simulator with base building and careers. Like EVE Online+++ but first person. It will have 1-3 mini-campaigns of handmade quests players can choose to do in most systems, but the moneymaking is all in free form opportunism involving salvage, mining, production, transportation of goods or people, data running, protection, piracy, espionage, exploration (you can sell coordinates of hidden wormholes you find as shortcuts between systems) etc. And Squadron 42 is like Wing Commander, or a long Call of Duty campaign.

It's more realistic than most shooters, with different tiers of injuries for each body part, different drugs you can administer for different effects, damage to vision or hearing from head injuries, different effects from blood drug levels.
You can even lose control over your body from drugging or drinking too much. I hear you can OD too but I don't remember experiencing it myself.
Or at least I assume the game will have all that, because the MMO already does and the single player you are watching is ahead but not playable by the public yet.

I have read some comments stating that CIG should do better promotion or get a publisher to back them, but the point of the whole project was that Chris Roberts was frustrated by the fact that he was not able to build all the Wing Commander (et al) games the way he wanted them because of pressures from studios to deliver something now - not when it was fully cooked. We've seen proof of what can happen without having a publisher calling the shots recently when Larian dropped BG3 to grand praise because they had gone it themselves and taken the time to make the game they wanted and it has been a smash.
CR said I wonder if I can scrape together enough crazy dreamers who really want to build the game of my dreams the way I want to without having a publisher breathing down my neck? I want to build the universe. "Erm - yeah - but the tech does not exist". "Well tech never exists until someone builds it - if you have long enough to do so you can eventually solve the problems".
It has taken years and 100s of millions of dollars to build a studio from 10 people to 1300 people worldwide and develop an engine capable of delivering the dream - and it's not done yet, and almost all that money has come from players.
People underestimate the loyalty of Star Citizen dreamers .. They can't imagine supporting a game with so much money for so long for so little apparent progress - it must be a scam! Star Citizens don't play the game for what it is (which can often be a buggy mess.) They play it for the dream that they share with the developers of what it will be one day. Players have given CIG $280M over the last 3 years (for a game in alpha) and are on track to contribute $100M again this year.
The SQ42 video is the first manifestation of what the solo part of the game will be like and the StarEngine demo shows what the engine that has taken so long to build is capable of.
"I Held the Line" is a nod to all the dreamers who have stayed with them over the frustrating years and kept believing that one day it will be all the things we dreamed it could be.
