One of the greatest solos of all time. So far past the Saxophone just pure imagination and a history of saxophone playing all in one solo. I miss you so much my man!!
One of the most beautiful impro of Body and Soul I have ever heard Melodic. Range and sub tones gliss a monster musician . It raises one up to new highs lip trills quotes !! If I never listen to another solo!! YES 👋🍾🥴👍🎷
Possibly controversial but nonetheless true to Mr. Benny Carter. To quote the great Benny Carter when speaking of Phil Woods, "Phil is the cat alto players should aspire to play like more than Charlie Parker"
Sorry, but not for me. Too many quotes and pyrotechnics at the beginning, and the Coleman Hawkins impersonation is a bit unnecessary. The solo is great in the second half in my opinion, some awesome moments there.
@@charlierumoldboi3939 Quite evocative of the big fat "dirty" sound of Big Ben on tenor. More than an impersonation I think it may have been some kind of hommage to Ben... maybe passed away in those days when this recording was made ? Just guessing.

Thanks for comment Maestro Morosco!!
His time was so great. He had so many options for sitting back or pushing a phrase. Beautiful.
This classic song was made for improvising, and boy, could Phil do it justice. Wonderful.

Here I hear him conversing with so many of the greatest saxophone players of the past. What a master of the alto saxophone he was.
Amazing
Your majesty, Mr Phil Woods.
Long live the king

And Phil loved Benny;s playing, too.
His complete mastery of technique and expression is on display here!
One of the great masters
Just amazing
God bless you for this!!!
Por favor viejito... ¿Cómo se siente tanto?
Yes, what a master. Supreme talent. He quotes "Gypsy" and "Moonlight Serenade."

He also quotes Round Midnight and Willow Weep For Me.

Sorry Charlie, you have committed gross error in your paragraph and should be punished by confining you to listening to Dave Koz!
thought it was Ben Webster :-)

Magnificent playing by Maestro Phil Woods. Thank you for posting. I’ve played that festival many times, I really enjoyed that. 🙏🏽
