First time I've ever seen knurling being made. Had no idea it was done with a tool like that on a lathe. I always just guessed it was made with a cutter. It's absolute madness just how much one can do with a lathe. Without a doubt that is the single most important invention of the pre-modern era. Also, excellent work!

That is not a knurl, it is just roughing the surface. Knurling displaces the metal to form a diamond shape, raising of the metal that will be larger than the parent diameter. That type of tool will not work on unsupported material too much tool pressure is required. A tool using opposing knurling wheels like scissors will work better, but still needs some support.

I thought he woke up in the middle of the night from a dream with the idea to build those handles and didn’t take the time to change out of his PJ’s.

Ok, so it turned out to be a heavy duty tap wrench…Ok I guess. Personally, for the effort involved I’d just buy one, but I guess tye point here is the joy of the home build.

2:00 Use a center drill. Support it with a rotating center. When you pull out the rod, the axis of the threaded part shifts and starts Lathe runout .

Nice project. Given the quality of tap handles that come in modern day tap and die sets, and this goes for the high end sets as well it's a valid project to make your own. The store bought ones lack in quality and don't hold well.

Knurling on that rather long stick out, without support, looked risky, but turned out to work well. Great project.

The accuracy of your 3 jaw chuck is not going to last very long if you continue to use rough black iron in it, you can see how much run out you are getting now, and please use a support if you intend trying to knurl with that push knurler.

You need a small hole opposite each hole the tap goes in to allow for a spring loaded tapping centre to hold the tool straight to keep your tap aligned.
