Your description of the Mud Killer is exactly why it is on my board right now.
It's a great pedal.
The JL seemed to have the smoothest saturation without sounding crackly. That one's got my vote for being the best bases on my taste,
been binge watching your videos from most recent and going backwards. This combination, the EVH EL34 100 with the DT OR the JL, is probably the best and most desireable tone i've heard so far....it's just sick! thank you for doing these!
Dude, you rule.
I really appreciate you pioneering doing things outside of the TIRED YT pack!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. I'm trying to offer something a little more unique for everyone. Different perspectives shine light on variety things for people.
Dude, all 3 sound great.
When I line up my drive/cruncher pedals for
a comparison with other amps, it’s whichever matches by nature I call this
Whichever pedal “floats your snarl”.
I’m working on my generator listening to ya
and a few times I stopped what I was doing and fervently Manson lamped over at my phone when you dialed out the hot mess and tuned the frequencies into their positions..
DAYUM sounds divine!
Thanks for commenting.
Yeah I definitely had to dial out all of the hot mess, Especially with the dirty tree. The red channel on the EVH is so gnarly that an overdrive pedal is typically too much for it, unless you adjust the gain on the blue channel.
Also, I agree with you...you have to find the right peda(s)l for each amp.
The whole design behind the Mudkiller is to cut the fat on flubby, bass-heavy amps and tighten them up and not so much to add color to their sound...but still have the options to do so. That's why it remains on my board where others have come and gone. No doubt the other pedals sound good but to me they defeat my purpose. Plus....adding a hint of drive to the Mudkiller would also pump up some of the aggression as well. Well, there you have it...my 2 cents! lol
Thanks for commenting Chris. I love the Mud Killer for the same reasons. The compression feature is nice too
It seems that you can also use the mud killer for thickening an amp, not just for tightening.
The Mud killer is Going to be very loud if you change the Comp switch to the Right!!
Thanks for commenting. I completely forgot about that feature. Maybe I should do an update?
I been looking at the mud killer since Silas introduced it it's sick ,and it cost less than the Loomis, and DT pedal ,great video Jarrod thanks man.
My pleasure
Nice to hear these through the clean channel, cool video Jarrod
Thank you. I figured I'd try something different to really show what's going on with these pedals.
@@TONEWARSgearshow good context for when you reach for some more aggression/texture out of an amp. I liked the Mudkiller best; flat but tight.
Nice review i’ve had my doubles tried for a few months and by far is the best thing I’ve added to my arsenal of gear for me a metal player that pedal is the perfect combination of everything I need for great rhythm tones the delay in reverb or independent of themselves from the drive in the boost great review
That's why I love this channel..! We get the "real goods" showcasing these 3 pedals in depth. Remarkable job Jarrod..hats off! Also highlighting the EVH blue channel gain Easter egg to sculpt even more..truly nasty, filthy tones from all 3 pedals. I'm still preferring my Mud Killer as it's welded to my board. Going to fire up my EVH Stealth 100 6L6 today just because..! Yes...a follow-up shootout with these modern boosts with the classic 808 and TS-9 could draw a lot of attention. 🎸
Thank you for the support Tony! I'm definitely gonna do that comparison video asap
The Dirty Tree works really, really well when used to tighten up a bass vi.
Thanks for the video man, I just got a 5153 el34 50 and was looking for a boost for the blue channel. Realized the mud killer isn’t enough for what I’m looking for.
Man, there’s so much great stuff nowadays.
I walk in my music room…it can be a candy store or a steakhouse..something killer for everybody!
Interesting video thanks for that 🤘🔥🤘 ordered my mudkiller a few days back and can’t wait to use it on my Badlander 25 … cheers 🍻 I have the OD808 and SD1 and just not really digging them as an OD on the Badlander … messes too much with the LO frequencies
Great video as always!! I have a Dirty Tree which I’m trying to get to work with my EVH Iconic. On both modes I can’t get it dialed in. Best luck I’ve had was running it in my effects loop Bu then it’s super loud. Any suggestions? Really looking to get that Loomis pedal also as it sounded great to me.
Great video, as usual. I have 2 of them, I must try the Mud Killer soon. Love the other two!! They def both have their pros.
Thank you. I hope you can get a Mud Killer soon. It's a great pedal
Hey man, great video again. I always meant to comment here. This was very informative.
I still haven't picked up a Mud Killer but I'd like to.
I know you have played and I think you own the Friedman Buxom. Is the Mud Killer that much different from the Buxom? I can make any amp very tight with my Buxom or thicken it up with the EQ. I'm curious. Thanks.
Loving your channel 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻. Question for you , i have a Mr Scary mod ordered for my Badlander 50 watt . Would you still suggest a boost pedal other than the TS9 Tube Screamer ?
@@johnfinlay4963 thank you so much. I would highly recommend the odd Box by warm audio. Use it in UK mode
@@TONEWARSgearshow thanks my brother , appreciate all your help in trying to put a rig back together . Out of music for over 20 years and feel like I’m in a different world now. Thanks again
Tonewars- im looking for an over drive that can add more aggression but keep it super tight and remove any fizz. Ive come down to the pepers dirty tree or the all pedal slamurai. Ive heard there both great i play everything from classic rock 80s to metalcore modern metal and prog metal so i want something that will allow me to go through those genres just want to ask yours and anyone elses opinions
What amp are you using?
Great video!
Hey is the Mud Killer much different than the Friedman Buxom for tightening lows? I have a Friedman Buxom and Source Audio on the Low cut setting for firming up lows. Curious if the Mud Killer would add anything if I bought it.
Looking at the Mud Killer, Precision and Dire Wolfe pedals next.
I also like pedals that will fatten up an overly dry or right tone. The Precision seems like it can do that with the attack control.
My Zio and Golden Pearl kind of do that too. The Zio on the E-Plex setting fattens and thickens, mostly they the mids.
This works on the Revv Purple channel well.
This was honestly an excellent video a real true way to showcase what is really going on with your Amplifier in relation to the overdrive. Clearly Jeff Loomis is a genius I’m still not a fan of the dirty tree no experience with the mud killer but sounded cool. Sometimes the subtle overdrive is the best one. Now it would be excellent to hear these pedals go up against our beloved TS9/808 or an SD1. I laughed out loud when you made the comment about other certain RUclipsrs actually claiming that they know the frequency band of what mid range they are hearing.😂 Like no one thinks you’re a scientist please stop. In any case good video people could learn a few things from this video
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I should do an "old school vs modern od pedals " video
@@TONEWARSgearshow Yes sir you could call it boomers versus the moderns.
@@jessemuscato lol great idea
@@TONEWARSgearshow You know they should release a regular version of this pedal that is just overdrive and boost it’s a great pedal but it’s overkill for a lot of people I don’t use Reverb or delay ever so I won’t buy this pedal as much as I want to
On the devils triad were you using the boost at all or just the drive? I have the dirty tree and the devils triad and love them both for different reasons so I was just curious.
Nevermind haha just finished the video and got my answer. Great video!
so what settings did u end up with on the Dirty Tree in TC mode?
so far i have mudkiller and peppers tree, i love the Peppers tree on TC mode while the mudkiller i dont hear any interesting characteristic of the pedal aside from dialing the fat to slim knob and it dont really vibe with it. while the DT mode on peppers tree is just not for me. the TC mode is just amazing for me, it all depends on ur taste for sure for me its either the Gridslammer or peppers tree my go to pedals.
Thanks for commenting, yes we all have different tastes.
The one pedal that's really been knocking my socks off lately is the odd box by warm audio.
Very unique and works with pretty much every amplifier so far
@@TONEWARSgearshow in my list this payday, lol and the Hexdrive too, im already happy with the tone im getting right now but the tone chasing never ends there haha
@@yousocrazy1199 tone chasing is so much fun!
Ok ..so just stumbled onto your channel due to the shootout using the Mud Killer against these others...all due to me being a BASSIST for over 30 yrs and now learning guitar and am looking for a good starting point drive wise ....I own a Line 6 HX Stomp and used it with my bass some ....so should I go with trying to learn to use it for guitar OR a pedal board with a cpl GOOD pedals.....I LOVE BLUES ..and METAL....so....also love Funk Rock ...I bought a Modded Jet City 20 watt head that is very hot rod Plexi type into a 2x12 stereo 16ohm OR 8ohm mono with V-30s ......PLEASE HELP.......LOL!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for commenting and for your question. So are you trying to decide between using the HX stomp and using a real amp and some pedals for guitar?
I think using a real amp is always the best way to go. It really helps you get to know the real sound and feel of a real amplifier. That way, when you try out different digital platforms, you'll know which one's suit your taste the best and more importantly, which ones emulate the sound and feel of a real amplifier the best.
Hey there again....NO I already bought an amp ...The hot rodded Jet City 20 watt that was designed by Mike Soldano ...now with the mods its kind of like a Plexi head ....so I am trying to decide if I need to go old skool type pedal board (individual pedals)....OR IF my HX Stomp would be a better tone choice ...or pedals???? EASE of use ??????
The real winner here is the CRATE GLXC 130 ALL SOLID STATE HEAD!!! This timeless piece from the early 90s can create devestating tones for much cheaper than all of Jarrod's gear combined. And the Crate even works with headless guitars. The Devils Triad from Jeff Loomis REQUIRES a guitar with a headstock or the calibration of the IC and Pc chips is thrown off. Something Jarrod forget to mention here. Make no mistake, Solid State is the key to good tube tone.
This insolence is classic! I approve
Bahaha
