I thought so when i first started the series, but it became very obvious that AllMight never needed to rely on other people to complete his goals. Like the video says i think there is a fundimental difference between why the two became heros in the first place. "I have the power to save people, so i have to!" vs "Someone is in trouble so i have to try to help." I cant help but get the feeling that if he did not inheritly all for one he would not have became a noteable hero, where i could see Deku still getting to a place where he could serve the greater good.

People who said that they didn't like Deku crying are stupid, you're just stupid. What is wrong with a boy crying? Call Deku what he is, a child. If you have a problem with boys crying, that's telling as YOU and what YOU think about masculinity, and if you think that boys can't cry, you have other issues that have NOTHING to do with Deku himself.
And to the people who say that him crying is annoying miss the ENTIRE point of why Deku cries. Deku cries because he still hasn't respected himself. He didn't have a quirk and everyone around him treated him as if he wasn't even human. They treated him as if he was trash. And not just bullied by Bakugou, he was bullied by EVERYONE around him. He is a kid who has been opressed his WHOLE life because he didn't have a quirk. And now he's finally given a chance to change that aspect of him. And so when he gets OFA he cries. When He gets praised, he cries. When he improves OFA, he cries. They are all because in that point of time, he still didn't respect himself and value himself.
I mean imagine being Deku. For practically your whole life, people tell you that you're useless and a waste of space because you don't have a quirk. You are bullied by everyone around you and even authorities don't do anything when they know you are being targeted. If you are told something for YEARS, it will get to you and you will start to believe it. For years, he's been told that he doesn't matter, so when a chance comes by and he starts to think that his life gets to turn around for the better, he cries. Think about how much he has endured. He's been verbally and physically abused by everyone around him. No normal person would be mentally okay when they've been abused for 10+ years. When he cries it is out of self pity because he thinks that he doesn't deserve his position.
As the series goes on, Deku starts to cry less and he gets more and more confident in his abilities. He starts to respect himself and values himself. That is something that quirkless Deku would have never done.
People hate Deku because he is real. If ANY of us were Deku, not a lot of would have made it past 14, much less even reach 14. He isn't just a character, he is a commentary on society. A society that mirrors ours and also mirrors our problems.

Not being rude but I think you're wrong there that MHA can't be "deep" or "analyzed". I find both Deku and Bakugou immensely well-thought characters and could analyze them both to the ends of Earth! Of course they aren't always written out so well in the manga, and maybe especially Bakugou would have needed more scenes to make his character development more plausible, but I still think the themes these characters represent and their development per se is incredibly interesting to think about. To me, they are intriguing characters and very human.

My favorite part of this video is the acknowledgement and insight explanations of the world building in mha, character depth, ideals, morals, and overall layout of the story. Most people's comments or observations of the story end at its successful attempts to "hype" the audience and no one ever questions where the "hype" comes from. The amount of diligence and forethought it must have taken to create a road map for the story of mha never ceases to amaze me. For a series that so many love to hate, it's almost like a cardinal sin for reviewers and audiences alike to acknowledge that Horikoshi might just be a good writer

That's something that I really like about the series. Things that are merely implied at the start of the series get greater scrutiny later. OniMaru brought up the idea of the role of heroes in society, and how they are celebrities. That idea has been in the series since the start, but becomes a conflict in the Stain arc. As another example, quirk regulation and the nature of quirks is something that has been in the story since its inception, and both become catalysts for major conflicts later in the series.
I hope that we get to see more of the nuances created by superpowers, and I also hope that we get more arcs where Midoriya isn't the main focus, or even present.

Hard agree on Deku's virtues. This is a great video.
Society at fault: a utopia is, by definition, impossible. There will always be those marginalized, impoverished, those who abuse their power, those who try and patch things up. That's true for our world, and for BnHA's. It's easy to blame the existence of villains on the hero society system, but that's not the whole story. Life presents a situation, but it's the individual the one who makes the choice, it's not "be a hero or be a villain", if out of frustration for your dream not coming true you'll flip, then it's entirely on you and no one else.
P.S.: Endeavor isn't corrupt. All the violence and abuse inflicted on his family isn't corruption, it's a twisted ideal. And his ideal isn't being the most successful hero, it is being the best hero, but his methods are flawed, even if his goal is good. Yes, the goal never justifies the means, but Endeavor wouldn't cheat his way to the top. We all saw how bad he took it that he got #1 by default.

It always kinda bothered me that people say Deku is a shit protagonist because he's "generic" or "a crybaby". Those two things both bother me for different reasons. First, sure he obviously follows shonen tropes like a lot of shonen protags, but he always felt like he had his own unique spin on it. He's soft spoken, humble, nerdy, and he constantly doubts himself. None of those feel like typical shonen tropes to me. In fact, they feel quite the opposite, since lots of shonen protags tend to be dumb, confident, and steadfast. At the same time, he still maintains the core of what a shonen protag needs, which is a huge amount of determination, compassion for others, and huge aspirations. Those kind of tropes to Deku made him feel a lot more relatable and likable to me than other shonen protags. Same thing with the "crybaby" aspect. Yeah he tends to be pretty emotional, sometimes too much. But I never really saw it as a downside since I feel its much better to be upfront and honest about your emotions than to hide them away and bottle them up. Its healthier, and it means your a lot more emotionally mature to handle letting other people see you when you're vulnerable. I find those behaviors pretty admirable in a protag, and I feel that the people who complain about that are saying a lot more about their own emotional maturity than Deku's.

I think many overlook elements when it comes to Deku's character in the story and miss his more subtle points of his development as a character.
For example, for season 4 in the cultural festival arc: Many people miss what this arc does for Deku's character after the overhaul arc to improve upon his setbacks. Deku tries to address his weaknesses mentally and physically after that experience. Deku learns to improve his fighting style with long-range attacks and uses strategy. It also carries over Deku's personal dilemma faced in the overhaul arc with how incompetent he felt compared to Mirio by actually accepting that he himself has to be the one to give people a brighter future as the OFA successor because of the expectations of others placed on him to get him to where he is. He uses the specific phrase of "Bright Future" which is the name of the episode with Nighteye's passing, referencing how that experience shaped his resolve during this fight with Gentle. He is now showing acceptance of that responsibility for himself, even if he is not the most qualified. Beforehand he thought Mirio would be a better successor for OFA (seemingly offers it to him) but here he accepts his responsibility as the OFA successor, even if he has to stop Gentle from his dream because of the obligation he has to those close to him. His dream is no longer his alone like it was before... this burden is now heavier as he carries more with him in his pursuit of being a hero.

@@TokyoSaga I have some analysis notes I post on Deku so think I see more with his character than others who dismiss him. I'll share this one on how I see Deku fitting into the themes of MHA
      -------
*How Deku fits in the themes of MHA as the MC in general*
(my analysis - long comment warning)
The theme of MHA is made clear in episode 1/chapter 1: All men are NOT created equal. Societal inequality aka there is inherent unfairness in the world and it's not just one's own will power to change that alone. What people can misunderstand about the story of MHA in respect to Deku's character is that many think the story should be more traditional in it's theme which is, individual effort being enough to change society (The example being Deku being a quirkless hero with him trying to change things by himself to prove society wrong aka an underdog story). This theme of individual effort is also reflected in All Might's character to some extent. With All Might, he tried to be the symbol of peace on his own, but even despite his effort as an individual, it led to the complacency of hero society to be vulnerable once he was not in a position to be that symbol.

In regard's to Deku character with his power, the themes are collective effort, which is nuanced in it's own way (people see this theme as a sign of weakness to need help to grow as an individual but it's also a good message to show that sometimes it's okay to have help to be successful and reach your goals, it doesn't need to be seen as negatively like 'cheating’ so long as you put your own effort in despite getting some help and recognize having the support of others along the way). He also represents legacy and the passing of the torch of the next generation. Despite being given opportunity (Deku blessed to be given powers), the path to success is not guaranteed and it still requires you to work hard (maybe even harder than most to live up to expectations) to turn that potential into something worthwhile (Deku may have the power but he has to work to tap into that potential otherwise it means nothing). If OFA is like a scholarship, then yes Deku is blessed to receive the scholarship, but he still has to work hard to actually earn the degree. lol OFA reflects that theme of collective effort as it is a power that was passed through many users, each user passing it on in hopes to defeat AFO, needing the collective power of the next user in hopes of future success. Showing why Deku getting OFA reflect this theme. Deku has to learn to not repeat the mistakes of All Might somehow, which likely is not being a lone pillar as a individual like he was so that the new generation as a whole can reflect societal change -- this will reflect that theme of success through collective effort.

My hero academia first time watching it I kinda felt weird like it was something that I'm not used too but MHA was also an eye opening anime that made me realize something about myself and seeing characters in the show who were going through something like Anexity and anger and jealousy and all normal human traits kinda helped a bit and realized that I wasn't alone and that I can still be a good person at the same while feeling these things.

I love the way this show makes me feel. I've put time, money, and my whole heart into this series. I grew up on DBZ and Naruto but neither show does for me what my hero does. It's not better than naruto nor is it doing a lot new but it doesn't need too. I don't have a problem with Deku as a main character because I relate to the constant struggle he goes through. Deku not being perfect and trying to live up to perfection is what makes me enjoy him. Its him being human that makes me enjoy him. This series means so much to me. Heroes Rising was my first anime movie I saw in theaters. I have long drawn out debates on this show with my friends at college and I want this show to succeed. I'm caught up on the manga and own every volume that I can find. I own the games despite them not being that good and I want to see these fictional characters succeed every step of the way. Horikoshi made a amazing series that we as a people do not deserve. Thank you to Studio Bones also

Glad to see some people to appreciate MHA and Deku as a character. lol Deku has more of an air of realism with an adolescent character facing the pressure he has with his powers and responsibility... (I mean at the age of 15-16 years old -- that's a time where people struggle with responsibility, face insecurity, and are looking for identity), many may prefer more 'feel-good' characters as a means of escapism, rather than ones who face emotional struggles and insecurity as a large part of their character arc, but I appreciate this element to Deku in MHA for a coming of age story.

Rae Coc I feel like all the side characters outshine deku which is one of my biggest problems with him. In my opinion he’s not interesting. That doesn’t mean he has to be interesting, I would just like him too be. Also the fact that he cry’s a lot in the beginning(he grows out of that obviously). I don’t understand why he wasn’t working out before he got one for all if he wanted to be a hero so bad. Instead of fan boying and crying and questioning himself, he could have got stronger or atleast stood up for himself when getting bullied and teased. I do like the fact that he’s selfless. I still really like him. And the way you feel about my hero academia, is the same way I feel about the naruto series, and it honestly kind of hurts when other people bash it because of stuff like filler.

@@darrentejada8630 the main reason he didn't work out was because he had everyone, the doctor, his mom, bakugo and everyone who was in anyway close to him told him he couldn't do it. He grew up with no self confidence and that hindered him a lot. It wasn't until he was finally told that he could be a hero did he finally start to work for a goal he thought was impossible. That part if deku is the part of himself that hasn't really changed either. His biggest character flaw is that if he thinks something is impossible that he doesn't try. It's only when shown a way to make it possible he decides to out in work. I can't really say anything to make you think he is interesting but I hope what I said makes sense. I have seen a lot of mainstream and obscure anime and while deku is in know way the best protagonist or even a particularly good one his story is the main reason I watch him. Zero to Hero from Nobody to somebody.

    • @raec5426
      @raec5426 4 года назад +21

@@darrentejada8630 The point of his character's origin is that he was insecure. Insecurity is a large part of his character arc (living up to expectations and legacy). At the time, being a hero was a dream not a goal. He took his hero notes but was unsure if he was fit to fully pursue it. He had self-esteem issues mainly due to the environmental influences. He wanted confirmation from All Might before going to fully pursue his dream. Deku's character is nuanced compared to most shonen protagonists because of his insecurity (most shonen protagonists are head strong and confident - it's funny because the things that make Deku different from other protagonists make him disliked. It's almost as if he was more generic in certain ways than he would be more accepted. lol) His resolve was weak when it came to himself but when it came down to putting himself on the line for others, in the midst of his weakness, there is where resolve for being for selfless is seemingly stronger than anyone. Some may hate this weakness of his, but I like that he can be representation for some people that can relate to that insecurity. If he's not your type of character that's fine (there are plenty to choose from) but he's for those that can relate to him.
He was designed to be somewhat plain (stated on his character introduction page). People in-universe say he is plain looking themselves. Interestingly enough the term 'quirk' is translated straight from Japanese to mean 'individuality'. Him starting out as 'quirkless' reflects that, hence why he takes a piece of other people with what he learns from them and their quirks to find his own sense of identity to discover his own meaning of being a hero. Most people don't consider that in regards to his character and why he is designed that way.

after watching so many shounen battle animes i was getting fatigued and started noticing a lot of patterns that the shows follow
the patterns work but when you binge a lot of shounen anime back to back the cracks start to show.
shows like dragon ball, dragon ball z and yu yu hakusho were made in the era of TV when internet was not as good
they had little budget and big dreams
sometimes they just had to milk a storyline(this planet will explode in five minutes!)
to play for time until they could figure out what to do next and also because it was a business that needed to fill a time slot that kids will enjoy and enjoy it we did!
bnha took the best of all the shounen anime as inspiration and created what i think is the best modern shounen battle anime till now
without the weaknesses and drawbacks of the ones that came before

I don't believe that All Might's motivation is entirely to maintain the Symbol of Peace for his sense of pride. He definitely isn't exempt from the hero system and absolutely makes misguided judgments, but he seems more self aware of it than what is portrayed. He knows that his actions have lead to the people's reliance on him, so when he speaks about the people "needing a Symbol of Peace," he means it literally. He realizes the errors that he's made, so he does what he knows to do and preserve the peace that he has established as long as he can. Often times the hardest thing to do is to ask for help; he feels as if it's his responsibility to fix everything, even though no one possibly could on their own. It's a common logical fallacy not just used in fiction, but one that affects many people, especially those in positions of power or influence.
That's why All Might choosing Deku as his successor is arguably a more important character growth for All Might himself. For the first time he swallows his pride and conviction and "asks" for help, even if neither of them fully know it yet. The heroic traits that All Might sees in Deku aren't just his selflessness and desire to help others, he clearly possesses those traits himself as shown by the lengths he will go to protect others. He sees Deku as someone who could rectify the mistakes he's made. He still has a hard time accepting that himself, almost feeling guilty of pushing his burden onto someone else, but in the end he knows that's what he has to do, and that's why he wants to dedicate his life to teaching and guiding Deku. In a way, All Might walked so Deku could run.

I feel like since he has more time to train Deku then he could with Mirio since he is a third year, he could help Deku be a hero that's not him. What mean by this is that he could help Deku to not do things that he did wrong back when he was the number 1 hero.

    *1. "Deku has no development!"*
Deku does have development. Just not as fast as others. You shouldn't really say that deku has no development because it's not true and the series isn't even finished yet.
    *2. "Deku is boring!"*
Because he's WRITTEN to be boring so that doesn't mean he's a bad character. He's written on purpose to be a normal kid in a world full of people with superpowers. And he's just a kid. Kids are simple.
*3. "Deku is generic and cliche!"*
It's a SHONEN. Of course the protagonists will have some similarities to each other. He may be a little cliche, but he's pretty unique at the same time. He isn't an enthusiastic, food loving guy who isn't very intelligent. He's just a quiet, timid boy with a love for heroes, and he's actually smart.
*4. "Deku got the strongest quirk!"*
People tend to ignore the ten months of training he went through. That's literally an entire school year in some countries. Sure he didn't train before he met all might, but that's because he didn't really believe he could be a hero after his classmates, teachers and even his mom said he couldn't be one.
    *5. "Deku is a crybaby!"*
Now this is a dumb reason to hate him. Imagine a world where 80% of people have something that you don't have. Your dreams were crushed at age four and bullied for the most of your life. I bet most people would be exactly the same as deku if it happened to them.
Now, I respect that people don't like deku, but the reasons that people have to hate on him are not very reasonable.

@Master France Adrias 1. Yes trauma is coped in different ways, i never said it isnt but deku has little to no trauma and the trauma that he does have is insignifigant because he could easily resolve those problems. He was bullied by some kids in school, kids he could have dealt with whether it be report them or avoid them. But he didnt he caused his own problems without trying to resolve them. I could understand if he tried everything to resolve his problems but he didnt he just took it for no reason and whines about it even though there were simple solutions to the problem. No shit his mother was worrying about him, he had zero work ethic in his dreams other than in school, he had no plan for his life other than his childish ideas to become a hero. Hell he could have became a hero if he actually worked hard, if he showed his mother that he is serious in becoming a hero she would have supported him as seen when he gets ofa and passes the exam(due to plot). Thats not an excuse why he wouldnt work hard or talk to her. So what she worried that dosnt mesn she dosnt care. If anything it shows she cares a lot. Thats not the only teacher in the school, there is also other teachers or the principle or counselors or his mother or even his relevant father. Yea deku could have easily switched schools as well to avoid bakugo or could have gotten him expelled. Just cuz he lives close to bakugo dosnt mean anything, whats bakugo gonna do exactly abuse a random family? No cuz guess what thats what police are for and that would just fuck up his plans to be hero. Like i said simple solutions for his problems but he chose to be in those situations, cuz he is to lazy to actually do something. Getting beaten up by a kid with explosions is more than enough of a reason to switch schools. Once again her worry shows that she cares and i bet she would worry less knowing her child was safe so no that isnt a point against deku actually solving his problems. If anything deku coming home with cuts and bruises stresses her even more so no its his fault cuz he dosnt wanna take care of his shit. I was approuched as well, dosnt mean i couldnt walk away or go to a place where i know i wont get hurt. He stuck tk bakugo for years as well. Face it deku is his own problem and all that trauma he goes thru is nothing

This is a second part. Izuku Midoriya is one of those characters I can see why folks dislike him. Personally, I always liked him. He was within the top ten but on the lower end, like number ten. But after the recent material in the manga, he's shockingly jumped up into my top five and I'll explain why. For starters, Midoriya's lack of self-worth and sensitivity comes from the MHA society itself. Think about it? A world with superpowers and you're defined by your Quirk. Heck, the name quirk is defined as individualistic trait/ quality. What are superpowers in the MHA verse but that? Midoriya had none of that. As such, he was a pariah within the society. Hence, he needs to prove himself due to that disadvantage. But the thing that folks forget about Midoriya is that his entire worldwide view was centered around All Might. All Might be his pillar in terms of morality, how he handled OFA initially. But what folks neglect is that we see the consequences of that limited viewpoint. All Might was great but Midoriya cannot emulate All Might. Beyond his body breaking, the idea of All Might is something that even All Might himself struggled with and we see the consequences of it. The recent chapters(MANGA SPOILERS) really focus on how when confronted about killing Shigaraki, he refused, citing how every villain he fought he tangled with them because he thought they wouldn't back down. Much like All Might. But not questioning how/ why those villains ended up the way he did. You saw glimmers of this when talking with Kota and him not reconciling with why someone would hate heroes(limited worldwide view). But with the cultural festival arc(underrated arc) you saw with Gentle that Midoriya started to open his eyes, realizing that him being like All Might just beating the bad guys isn't going to cut it. For heroes are meant to save people. Even ones who may not want to or those who are deadset in their ways. Hence, Midoriya's goal of being a wandering ronin style character, trying to understand villains(END SPOILERS).
What I mentioned above really changed my view on Midoriya a lot. The pieces of him not being AM and the consequences were there, but it was hard to make out where this was going. Now, we see that Midoriya is striving to become his own hero, one outside of AM and even the pro-heroes. This being the byproduct of being a holder of OFA and recognizing the dangers facing him and the greater MHA society. Platitudes and lip-service are meaningless. Midoriya believes in actions and thus that's why I'm impressed with him. He's a slow-burn character who just got better and better.

I dislike the over simplification that Deku just suddenly remembered he has legs. The majority of people when fighting barely to never use their legs in a fight let alone as a primary striking force. In MHA Ida is litterally the only exception because his quirk revolves around using his legs but even then he had to learn to use legs effectively. He had to learn technique. That's what Shoot Style is: a kicking technique incorporating the use of the terrain during a fight as well as the momentum generated by Full Cowling's speed and agility. This coupled with the greater amount of force that can be exerted by the legs as well as his iron soles makes him even more effective in battle than he would be if he could still use his arms without issue. Why do y'all sleep on Shoot Style again?

    • @anonymousdragon7765
      @anonymousdragon7765 2 года назад

Idk I think they’re just simple minded and ignorant. And yeah, really no one thinks about or uses their legs in a fight unless their quirk is associated with them or they know martial arts / other fighting techniques. It’s kind of just instinct to go with your arms. At the same time though, most people probably say that as a joke, and don’t actually think he forgot about his legs. I too, use it as a joke- but I don’t actually think he forgot about them, they just weren’t his main focus. This video also goes into the fact that he focuses too much on being like all might (who doesn’t use his legs when fighting hardly at all) in the beginning, since all might hasn’t given him room to be anything more than the symbol of peace, or given him the idea to be more.
Edit: I also wanted to add on that that’s what makes shoot style so awesome and important, it’s his first original move that is not derived from all might, and a step closer to becoming his own hero. People might just hate on it because they wanted him to be like all might, and get stronger though pure force and control rather than technique, which in my opinion is kind of dumb ngl

Manga reader from three years later here (don’t worry, I won’t spoil anything). As of writing this, the latest chapter has been number 420, and with the knowledge of what happens in it, I have to say…
Everything you said about Deku is 100% true.
Deku is my favorite character in all of fiction, and I am not kidding when I say that he (and by extension author Kohei Horikoshi to a point) is to me what All Might is to him. He makes me want to act and make things around me better and strive to _be_ better. His true power truly is to inspire others to action, to make them believe they can do it too, both in and out of his story, and he’s only able to do this _because_ he is not a powerhouse like All Might or gifted like Bakugo and Todoroki. He is going to become the greatest hero because from the start, the story has been telling us that a hero isn’t someone with the most amazing powers who beats villains and saves the day from catastrophes. A hero is someone whose body moves when other people are in trouble, who reaches out to help them no matter who they are or if they deserve to be saved, and who inspires others to act too. And Deku is the ultimate embodiment of that ideal. From running to a villain when he has no power to try and save his bully and inspiring All Might to act, to firmly stating he wants to reach out to the man who wants to destroy him and everything he loves because he’s in pain and inspiring Class 1-A to come to his aid, up to where he is in the manga. The meaning of heroism is not in the results, it’s in the will.

To me it just looks like a bunch of deeply insecure people unable to relate too or just straight up being made uncomfortable and therefore hating a character so genuine, secure and committed to his goals and his belief in himself. It’s kind of a weird ego defence mechanism, “if the character im watching isn’t as garbage a person as me then they must be poorly written and are therefore be boring.” People need to work on themselves before they go around judging those who are actually good people trying to strive for excellence in an unfair and unjust world.
This is why so much of the anime community is so toxic, because they literally encourage and foster that kind of insecure and cruel personality, so when someone who is insecure but then chooses and genuinely commits to climbing out of that hole comes along as the main character of a popular show, then everybody starts hating on him once he finally starts blossoming rather than staying the way he was when they first started watching, they want a toxic person who just has more power than everybody else, so that they can feed their egos. They want a character like bakugou, or sasuke, or Light, or that guy from tokyo ghoul or literally almost any isekai protagonist. Because if it finally hit them that in reality, being like Deku, or “Superman” is the way a genuinely good person acts and that they should strive to be like that, then it would destroy them even more than they’ve already destroyed themselves.
Deku is an actual representation of an average, emotional, bullied teenager, with a strong will, and a genuinely good heart, trying to make himself better so that he can protect and save others, this makes him boring to those who can’t relate to that personality. He isn’t unusually selfish, self centred, or cruel.
In conclusion while Izuku may have started out as insecure, he has now found his footing as a hero, and therefore has been given the power and the responsibility that comes along with the role, as such he will always rise to the occasion, even when he isn’t asked to or even given praise for doing so.
    Because that’s what heroes do.

I was bullied just as bad as deku. But im not like him and i dont relate to his bitchy self. All he is is a lazy and spoiled child. He has everything he could have wanted from his parents except a quirk. He had a dream but didnt commit to it until he was promised power. A dream that he could have accomplished if he tried. For example a group project where all might does all the work while deku just signs his name. He only wanted to make himself better when he was promised everything. Other mcs arent selfish or self centured or cruel but they are a thousand times better than deku. For example luffy. He didnt have much growing up and experienced death and torture at a young age but he still persivered he still worked hard to be something, so whats dekus excuse again, oh yea i was bullied so i wont try to be something.

    • @PaleRook
      @PaleRook 3 года назад +8

I’ll bite since I’m already here.
People’s hatred and dislike for Deku doesn’t stem off of anything like being uncomfortable, being unable to relate, ego, narcissism, or anything like that. There is a pure reason for why he is disliked within his character. Trying to change the conversation on deku’s character onto peoples personal lives is pretty nasty ngl. Someone could be the scum of the earth, but they can still show off someone else who is scum.
This still is not true for the anime community, maybe select parts of it like this. But with fan favorite characters like Edward Elric, Luffy, Hinata, Saitama, Mob, Natsu, and to a minor extent Gon are all characters that were known and loved for their personalities that aren’t edgelords. People Disliked deku’s character early on because he was boring, not because he was different. He has barely evolved from episode 1 at all on an ideological level beyond anything that just made him believe what he already knew but better. People like Sasuke, Light, and Kaneki because they pose a question about the world around them (Bakugou does not due this so I left him out). While they are all overpowered to an extent in their stories, their overpowerfulness isn’t why they are liked. Otherwise people would be frothing at the mouth when they saw OFA in proper use. People dislike characters like Deku and Superman because in terms of Deku he is the ultimate answer to a question that refuses to be asked and Superman is just overpowered unless he is nerfed or removed from the story. These characters are supposed to be the ultimate good, yet nothing will go out of its way to ask why they are the ultimate good specifically. They just are in the context of their story.
I can guarantee to you that a majority of people who watched MHA were more likely to be an average and emotional teenager instead of some type of hidden badass who can shoot a puppy and not care. Him not being cruel still is not the reason as to why people dislike him.
The reason why people conclude to hating Deku is because nothing challenges him beyond physical limits. The only one to ever do this was stain (and the answer to this conflict was punch him in the face). Nothing makes him question what it is to be a hero. He keeps saying “I’m going to be the greatest hero” but then we never see what he thinks it means to be a hero, we never see other hero’s or villains step up to reflect off of him to mold him into truly the greatest. We see this happen once in stain, who is almost universally loved as a villain, not due to his edge but because he did something literally no other character in the series did.
In comparison to other shonen or manga in general, we see the main character push their thoughts onto an opponent to see which is superior and who is truly right, but in MHA we rarely see any genuine thoughts for Deku to reflect off of. Instead we see characters instead reflect off of him and instead change themselves. This could’ve been interesting to see if Deku were to be at the end and helping those after him like All-Might, but what we have is him growing with them at the same time with only 1 side of the coin getting attention. Deku’s character has been the same from the stain fight to where it is in the Manga right now yet everyone around him (even fucking Bakugou) has developed. He’s just stagnating.
So you said Deku was blossoming, which he is, but he’s doing so at a pace that people are losing interest in watching it happen.

Can ı talk about how much people talk about mha is so overrated but so many people sees deku as a bad character because oh he cries a lot or he is too lucky or something else and ı'm not saying you can't hate deku but for me saying he is a bad character is wrong. For me he is one of the most relatable characters in media for me. He doesn't have a really dark origin story but thats what makes him special. Don't we love to be a superhero? Don't we wanna help people with super powers. He is like us but in his universe everyone is special and he is a normal kid in this universe. Yes he gets one for all but this doesn't change "everyone can become a hero" approach in the story but it shows how much flawed this superhero world is. İn this universe if you don't have a quirck you are basically less than others for people. Deku shows this two things. But what about his character develepmont? it's slow in a really good way. One of his biggest flaw is he always looks at others for being a hero not himself. Because he doesn't belive he can be a hero by himself. He sees himself as nobody. Even in the start we see that. Eventhough he says he can be a hero he never works in physical way. He just looks at others. Until someone tells him how to do that. When all might tells him he can be a hero and gives him a workout he works really hard because he needed an direction. And nobody in his life gived him that. He is just bullied because he didn't had a quirck. And even in ua he just looked others like bakugo. Or musclar fight. Musclar fight for me showed his weakness most. İn other fights he thinked about ways to defeat his enemy. But in this fight he just tried to be all might and he just destroyed his arms in a way that he can't recover. But now he starts grow more. Again slowly but strongly. And ı love that about him. He always makes me feel lile if he can make it ı can make it. He is like my friend who always supports me and tells me "you can do it".
There are probably still things ı can say about him but ı don't think ı need this video explains it all better. good job.
I probably have so many grammar mistakes ._.

Hella facts. I'm going to compare Deku to Naruto and Asta. Naruto growing wanted to become hokage because he wanted to acknowledge by the village as a somebody. A selfish but understandable goal. Nobody believed in him but except Iruka Sensei. Asta wanted to become the wizard king because he wanted to end inequality. I can respect that. Being the MLK of Black Clover. He had his foster brother/best friend to support him and even considered him a rival. Deku wanted to be a hero because of his admiration for All Might growing up. But he is the the thing. He had no one to support him. Not even his own mother did. This causes him to be cry and be timid because he had no one that believed in him. But when All might said that he could become a hero, he bursts in tears because all his life he wanted to hear those words. I honestly think All Might didn't tell him about one for all he probably would've worked hard to. I dont know how but he would've tried. Deku just needed words of encouragement. Something he never had before unlike Naruto and Asta. This doesn't lessen any of those characters i was just showing how different they were.

@@jajagaming3602 iruka never believed in naruto until that incident where he stole the scroll... Could be almost the same time when all might said those words to Deku
People were more shitty and cold to naruto and Asta than Deku
His whole class might be mean to Deku but not the whole society
They are kids, kids can be mean to each other for other reasons..but if everyone shun you, now that's on another level
In deku's world, quirk less people can still make something of themselves..they can at least get a normal job/life if their dreams doesn't come true
In asta's world, magic is literally everything mentioned by almost everyone in there...not only he was discriminated due to his situation of no magic but also his status as a dirty unimportant peasant
Not even Yuno treated Asta anything special..at least he never said it out loud . He's acting cool and cold to him
Adults literally teach their kids to stay away from this naruto dude,
I don't think Deku can ever be compared to those 2... If he wasn't so obsessed with quirks and heroes, he'd still be able to do something in his life...

There's a reason out of the many *shonen* Anime I've watched Deku from My Hero Academia and Shigeo (Mob) from Mob Psycho 100 resonate with me as truly amazing protagonists. They're masterclass characters of real empathy, self love, and overcoming adversity to do what's right. They are the most relatable definitions of "HERO" I've found in the anime world that break apart from the tropes and standards for protagonists we tend to see so heavily focused on and glorified. People also hate mha for having very less tragic lives of characters but they forget about the fact that it is set in a time similar to modern day where depression is the biggest tragedy to ever happen to a person

Also I love that the My Hero is aware that Deku isn’t the normal shonen protagonist that people come to love and cherish. And that comparison is made in the overhaul arc where Mirio seems much more like a protagonist. Conversely Villains like Overhaul and Stain are much more defined in their ideology than Shigaraki and Shigaraki himself is aware of that and that’s why he’s trying to understand his own convictions. I love the parallel between the Shigaraki and Deku because they both don’t seem like the ideal villain and protagonist but develop themselves based on learning from experience.

I love how Deku and the society he lives in embodies the flaws of real societies in the world the question of why some people are outcasted and looking more at the flaws of society due to the original rules placed down and each society has issues there is no debating that humans are flawed .all of us are flawed including heros that is why its so amazing to see Deku and Bakugou and everyone else in class 1A striving to reach their goals to see how they struggle and learn to grow with the challenges they are given. Also to acknowledge and even briefly focus on " villan quirks" like la brava and twice is great because the way quirks effect a person isnt just physical , but can also effect the user mentally which could play a big role into how Deku will defeat and possible save Shigaraki if and when he finds out about his messed up past. I wont spoil anything , but it does make me see the villan as more than what was originally emphasized about his character.

While my understanding of the story after watching the first 3 seasons of MHA is nowhere near as clear and wide as yours. I always felt that the criticism of Deku being "unqualified", for one for all was the whole point of the show. Thank you for explaining this in a way I couldn't. :)

the one thing i hate about BHA is the fact that someone like bakugo got spot in UA - also that after izuku got quirk, they completely moved from quirkless stuff to somewhere else

I usually ignore the comment section partically on popular anime because people debate especially my hero academia not a perfect series but I enjoy it ever since 2016

Damn. The way you actually predicted the ending's message 4 years prior lol. Its a shame a lot of people hated the ending, but personally, i completely agree with you and the manga's ending perfectly gets it across. The ending is not perfect, but it nails the parts it needed to just right
