Great ! My first AMT kit was a 1960 Falcon. It was $1.50 . I have made models ever since , off and on . I did some decent models , but u are a Master Sir. I can understand what u do , how u do it , and your explanations are excellent. So glad I found u , keep going please. I am handicapped now and truly enjoy your work . I may attempt some more kits ,they are just too nice to pass on. Thanks again...so cool
Can't wait to get my hands on this kit! I've built the late 90s AMT Catalina in the past as a drag car and as a stock car. The original Polyglas Gasser kit from 1969 was a 1962 Pontiac Bonneville which used the same tooling from the original 1962 annual kit. Those original kits are real rare and pricey today.
Great video!! I passed this kit up at Hobby Lobby, went with 66 Buick Wildcat. No second thoughts now, hopefully it’s still there next time I go in there. Keep up the good work and inspiration. Stay safe and have a great new year. Jeff
Hi, I have been enjoying your channel for a while now, and really like your style of how to do this. Your channel has greatly inspired me to begin my models. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your channel. I am about to get back into model building again, I was in my twenties the last time I built a plastic model - that was over 30 years ago 🤣. I have my grandfather's 66 Ford from Mobius, and a few others, including all the remake of the pirates of the Caribbean models. I have a strange request. I picked up an AMT 1:25 Catalina 421SD kit from a small estate sale. Today, I just went through it to get it ready for degrease and noticed that the interior door panels are gone! Some pieces have been cut off the tree, seats and things, and no door panels. I was wondering since this kit you built a couple years ago had two sets of door panels. If you still have them, I would be happy to purchase either style you have left from the kit. Please let me know, I plan to make this a restoration - needed model with weathering, rust, and such as my first kit.
@@hpiguy All good, I can get this kit on ebay for $25 and I'll just do one as described and one sharp for the track. I appreciate your prompt reply. 52 kits in a year, wow, you sure show your love for this hobby. I hope your channel continues on until every kit ever made is shown here. God bless you, man.
I clearly remember the transparent portion of the steering wheel on my '64 nine passenger Catalina wagon, somehow seeing that bright metal bar in the wheel gave me pause thinking someday that could be in my chest! Even though the " softer " steering wheels also had that hard ominous looking bar I never gave them a second glance except to find the horn. Have not heard " what-naught ' in quite a while. Thanks for the memories, That's why I enjoy your reviews. Thanks again.
Chris i really enjoy your video's. You have giving me a few tips and short cuts and the builds come out just as good. I build a lil different but hey everyone does there own thing.
AMT sold this kit pre-built and professionally painted in the Masterpiece series. Gorgeous model...I added a set of narrow whitewall tires and Pontiac "8 lugger" wheels to give it a classier, showroom stock appearance...
It was the Bonneville that had those odd looking 3 part wheels / brakes with the brakes made like a clutch - the "shoes" were inside a pancake module - most unusual indeed. All the other "Ponchos" from 61 - 64 had regular brakes and steel wheels with hubcaps. Another fine build. This time it's your interior detail that made this a true Pontiac. Thanks for sharing...
I agree its a great kit. Great detail all around. The one I just completed isn't the same as yours but its close. Only difficulty was the dashboard. It was hard for me to get done right. I did the seers in three shades of blue like the instructions suggested and photos have shown. If all AMT kits were this good I would be building more than Revell and others.
I like how you sorta put a story together behind how you put the kit together. It's rare to see a kit with a back-story these days. Now I'm gonna have to try and do the same thing with my builds. It would be nice for me to have a reason for why a did a certain thing a certain way beyond "it just looks cool." I'm working on an AMT '09 'Vette right now that I was going to de-chrome the wheels on and do a metallic teal/green-candy base with lime green accents (wheels, side-mirrors, etc.) to give it more personality, and now I'm gonna have to go think up a back-story for it and re-think things lol. I've been looking at a couple of Aoshima's wheel 1/25 wheel kits for it, since as usual with Revell or AMT, the stock wheels that came with the kit were literally the worst looking ones available at the time, but I can't make my mind up on which one to grab. Having a back-story might help with that a bunch. It seems to me that modern muscle cars are so much more difficult to make design choices on since they look so organic these days. I might just end up fabbing some different stock wheels on the 3d printer and picking one of those. I would have done so from the get-go, but the materials for that printer are not cheap.
Great job, love the model. Love the car. Your detail work, the washes, the tire wear...you build lived in models. I can always envision a small diorama while you are building.
Great Review! I just purchased this kit, and was a little concerned about the detail, or possible lack of. This one is plenty detailed! This kit in my opinion is as detailed as ALL the kits SHOULD be. I just don't like it when the Exhaust pipes, rear suspension, axle, and drive shaft are all molded into the frame. Furthermore I prefer that inner tub of the kit you have to assemble in pieces with the rear seats not being molded into the tub either. Again great review, and a sigh of relief. (I'm glad AMT currently has outlines of all the parts and parts trees on the back of the box so you know in advance)
I have watched this video many times... I would love to see a longer version of painting and more assembly. Btw, why leave off the fuel pump and gas lines to carbs?
Love the Pontiac. That 421 was a monster. Those cars truly meant business. I believe the Canadians had a version of the Catalina called, the Star Chief. Beautiful cars. I will never understand how that company went out of business.
Cool!! My dad had a older i think mpc kit but I believe it is a Bonneville because it has the 8 lug wheels, and the one kit he has ive tried to buy or trade him out of for years is a blue molded 65 mercury Monterey parklane roller no interior built or drivetrain because he couldn't decide how he wanted to build it it sits on wheels from some other drag car kit front bfg ta radials and cragar s/s wheels and the rear are the 53 trophy edition amt ertyl ford truck slicks and a kidney bean style set of magnesium not the aluminum version of slot style wheels all the more reason I want that car kit lol
I put a set of narrow band whitewalls and stock 8 lug wheels (from the current '65 Grand Prix kit) on mine and made it a showroom stock (non-racing) version... :-)
you did a really good job on this build have both 61 and 62 catalina kits want to build the 61 as a smokey yunick #22 w/gold bare metal foil for the decals😅
Those redline tires are ones like the premium ertyl whiteline tires in the 65 Pontiac GTO convertible/hardtop kit shows a gold car, the 64 Chevy Impala 3 in 1, and the mpc i think it was 66 Chevy II nova ss 3 n 1 car anyone remember the tires in those kits the only difference is that Catalina has redline ones, which would look pretty cool on those other kits as well, and the mpc Pontiac Blackbird has the same bfg ta tires I was talking about i wonder if that's where my dad got them i know that because I built the blackbird with the gold edition mpc exclusive wheels its a mid 80's kit but I built it the way it is supposed to be except the decals it didn't get any put on it the kit im talking about the wheels are the snowflakes the black molded body nose and hood and the ertyl rear tail panels i like how they did it better than the monogram version of the 78 Pontiac ta, and the moc kit im referring to has smoked grey glass
i built one of these back in '69 and have one in my stash. the interior is the old tub type and chassis is the one piece unit. did round 2 redo this kit?
Thanks Gary, yeah, all kinds of stuff left over for other cars from this box. Even the custom bench seats I didn't use could be made to fit other stuff.
Hey HIPGuy!! You seem to breeze through every kit, no matter the age, with amazing skill, I know you keep it positive but would you ever put together an episode on stinkers to avoid? Thanks again! I built armor and aircraft for 35 years, now doing cars/gasser and you've been a godsend!!
I've never met a kit I can't get together in a couple days. I always wondered why no one ever made diamond pleated upholstery in a model kit. Now I see they have. Much prettier on a real car. I think they sunk the buttons way too deep in the ones in this kit. Still unique though!
Love the review really helps me see what the car looks like when done if I’m interested in building one myself but one question. How was the overall fit of this kit was there any problems with parts not lining up?
I built that very kit back in February and I painted mine a dark maroon with dark red & black interior. Mix up a black wash and let it run into the low spots of the grill, take a q-tip and remove the wash from everything but the low points. Instant darkened grill.

Apparently my Dad used to own one of these when he was much younger and drove it to work daily. I wish I could build this but I've never built any modelcars or painted a modelkit.
Is your parts washer something you created or is like mine - a small plastic tub with dish soap? and as usual - a well thought-out presentation with detail and good camera work.
Always liked this kit and what a great idea to do this retro box with this kit. Great Build Chris as always. Does anyone know when the 1st ( original ) kit was released. Thank you. Jeff
This AMT kit tooling dates from the early 1990s, the original Polyglas Gasser kit was the original 1962 annual kit tooling and was released in 1969. It's interesting they used box art from the 60's, but used a late 90's tooled kit. Disappointed they didn't have the skinny Drag Slicks that came with the original (late 90's release) stock version of this kit.
I realy like your reviews, are you in sales lol you could narrate paint drying and make it intresting haha good job and good builds keep'm coming thanks.

Hey Chris... Just a quick, off the wall, question... I know you do excellent work on your quick 2 to 3 day builds, but... In your opinion should bare metal foil be done before or after clear coating a paint job?
3 times I’ve had that kit in my hand, but this Friday I’ll walk out of the hobby shop with it. Nice kit!
Thank you!

Thanks! Someone below says the 90s? I do not know when it was new but it's a nice build still. No moments of frustration in building.
This AMT kit tooling dates from the early 1990s, the original Polyglas Gasser kit was the original 1962 annual kit tooling and was released in 1969.
AMT included it in a poll of suggested reissued kits in the 1980s but no one seemed to remember what it was.
The newer tool is far superior to the original.

It's interesting they used box art from the 60's, but used a late 90's tooled kit. Disappointed they didn't have the skinny Drag Slicks that came with the original (late 90's release) stock version of this kit.
Luckily the skinny drags are in a ton of other kits as extras in those and can be used.
