Wow. I've been watching a lot of YT videos about the OW for beginners, and this is CLEARLY the BEST and VERY well explained, and very clearly. When I finish this video, I'll explore more videos from this person. I wish everybody else on YT explained things as well and as 'smartly.'
Thank you so much for your very positive and specific comments. I do work to provide clear information in everything I teach. You have inspired me to continue, and to branch out as I explore other endeavors to continue to provide instructional videos. Thanks so much.
So good! The delivery was simple and smooth, well explained and got me feeling like I’m not gonna be totally overwhelmed when my GT (Finally!) gets here! Thank you.
I just wanted to say thanks so much for this video! As someone who has never experienced ANY board sport and an amateur rollerblader I was nervous ordering and learning a Onewheel. Because of your funny, calm, cautious, and informative approach I was able to get up and ride in about 15 minutes with only one true minor fall. And so glad I ordered one. Only on day 2, and we already have 12 miles on the board. It's a total blast, and already made a new friend/riding partner out of a complete stranger who just saw me riding!
You are so welcome! I'm delighted to hear of your success and that I played some small role in urging you on. Happy OWing to you and your newfound friends!
Thank you Susan for your tutorial. Very Clear. And well thought out. I especially liked the part where you looked right into my eyes and said in my head, "Kevin start buying the safety equipment now"!!! At 63, its been while since I've skateboarded. I want to be the first of my old gang to get one.
You are very welcome. Just remember to ride within your limits and don't get caught up in what you THINK you should be doing. Just cruising has its own fun and peacefulness to it. Enjoy!
I don't own a onewheel yet, but this is the best beginner friendly tutorial I have seen. I am more convinced to buy one now. Young or old, this video is the definitive "OneWheel 101"
Thank you! I just take things at my own level and don't push to try to achieve what others are doing. Hope you enjoy your future OW. Thank you again for your excellent comments!
I highly recommend renting one first before purchasing a OneWheel. It generally comes with an experienced instructor who can train you on all of these same details in person. I’ve never done board sports and I was able to pick up the basics pretty quickly. I agree with her stressing the importance of learning how to stop. This gives you more confidence when you hit a tricky spot or don’t feel balanced. Nice job with the tutorial!! OneWheeling is so much FUN and one of the BEST ways to rediscover your community.
I agree in some regards. I wanted to rent first too. But if I had I probably would have not moved forward with the OneWheel. Having purchased one, I had to be accountable which pushed me to not give up and really learn to ride. I would actually enjoy teaching others to ride and consider myself an excellent teacher. I approached a rental place in my area and was ignored. Guess they want a more "hip" person. Lol. Anyway thank you for the positive vibes and comments. Happy riding!
I've been looking at getting a Onewheel and this is by far the most helpful in making that decision and considering whether I feel I can actually ride it.
Thank you. It is a commitment considering the cost. Just take your time when you get it and don’t compare your progress to anyone else. Learn at your own pace. Enjoy!
This is very good, I just learned how to ride yesterday (Pint X), took all of 5 minutes but I ride EUC's and esk8 boards so I had a leg up, still shaky on stopping, the part where you said to push your knee forward really helped. I learned in my yard and had no problem but I'm used to riding in grass so maybe not the best idea for absolute beginners. Watching videos like this and maybe some visualization before you just jump right on. Good stuff!!
Wow again, I've had mine for several months and I still enjoyed this video. Onewheel isn't the topic of my channel but I can't help doing videos about it once in a while. Great job.
Great video. Lifetime snowboarder and picked this up no problem. 100% on the helmet! Having your dominant leg forward is pretty common. It’s more about your bodies ability to shift weight and balance the best. I’m also goofy. People generally find out after they try for a few minutes.
@@InternalTaiChi When I rented my first snowboard, the guy told me to turn around and then shoved me in the back. I broke the fall with my right foot and I've been right foot forward ever since.
I've been riding for a week. Initially I was scared to get on but I thought I should really learn how to stop the board before trying to ride. I dedicated my first hour in my house holding onto a dresser and just kept practing deactivating the board. After that I had the confidence I needed and started riding it in my house going back n forth slowly lol. Great video, wish I would have found it sooner
Thank you! 🙂 I'm happy my video helped. I'm now learning to ride switch, and am going through the same process... Learning to stop first. It goes a long way in building confidence. Happy riding!
Just picked up the one wheel got it yesterday thanks for telling me to not think of super high expectations right off the bat. That's a proper mind state to get into I wrote it for about an hour and I already got 20 times better from when I started thanks again so much. Excellent tutorial video for beginners.
You are very welcome! Thank you for the positive feedback. Please share my video with others! If you are in a OW group on FB, please share. I hope you have a long, enjoyable journey on your OW!!
This is probably the most comprehensive guide for beginners I've seen so far. I've been hesitant on ordering a one wheel as I have zero experience riding anything other than a bicycle. This video made me a lot more confident to buy one. Thank you!
Thanks for the tutorial. Just got my first pint x today and can't wait to give it a try without watching any reviews. So i quit really fast, not too much space in the garage though. Hope tomorrow will get a lot better.
You're awesome, Tai Chi Susan. Practical and very useful advice, and concisely conveyed. Just ordered the wheel so this was a great video for me to get my head ready lol. I'm not young and/or hip either - forgive me for the "either" - but i mountain bike and rollerblade and etc so I'm hopeful I can manage this. Thanks, and happy riding!
Great video. I loved the whole content and specially the part saying that we need to be confident in how to stop and this makes more comfortable. It is true. Thanks for the video. I’m a beginner
Thank you! I am glad you found it helpful. The main thing is to not push yourself. Progress at your OWN comfort level. I was riding with a 20 year-old and that made me push a bit harder than I should.....so I decided to start riding at my own pace and worry about jumping curbs in the waaaaay future. ;-). Enjoy your ride!
@@InternalTaiChi ride on your own pace it is the best. This is what I tell to my partner when I’m riding. I just love to ride it. It keeps me in the present mode.
You are welcome! Just take your time. It took me awhile, at least two weeks until I felt any progress. Now it feels natural. You will get there as long as you take your time and learn at your own pace and don't push limits.
Great vid. You didn’t linger on the fact that the one wheel is a self balancing device. I’m trying to understand exactly how self balancing is it? Does it feel like you’re standing on a mattress? Or more like ice skates?
Great question. The self balancing is only front to back. It does not self balance toe to heel. Once you engage the front sensor the balance feature clicks on, which effectively keeps the board parallel to the ground from front to back. You can stand on it without moving and the board stays "balanced" front to back. Then you apply a bit of pressure to the front, it engages the motor to move you forward. However, it does not stabilize or self-balance the board toe to heel....so if you get wobbly ankles, it will teeter side to side. Just slow down and the ankle wobble will go away. To turn you push toes down or heels down. Eventually you use your hips. I hope this helps and my description is clear enough!
*Surfdado's* video on _"The Truth about One Wheel Nose Dives"_ ( ca 2022 ) is a *_master class_* on the physics of one wheel motors and nose dives by a fellow floater and electrical engineer. I guarantee you, that you won't be board;)
Thanks for the positive feedback! I think it is good to have both techniques for different conditions. When riding trails, I definitely use the jump off method more. Now I'm gathering the courage to learn the "quick stop" method! Happy riding.
Thanks for the great video! Just bought one for my son and anxious to learn it myself. Good to hear from a person who are not so much in that board riding demographic😁
You are very welcome. Not being in the demographic is exactly why I made this video...I felt there was a need to encourage others! :-). Enjoy and happy riding!
I have wanted to get a One Wheel for YEARS, even saved up for it and has been sitting in an envelope haha, but have not made the purchase yet because I am so afraid of getting hurt. Like everything sometimes you have to just make that leap, but after breaking my leg surfing when I was a kid it has caused some PTSD lol and I have been afraid to get on any type of board since, especially my knee injury a few years ago. To help gain some confidence I have been watching hundreds of tutorial videos on how to ride a one wheel for beginners and this one is by far the best one! Greatly explained, calm, answering all questions that a beginner would have. Still nervous but this helped so much! Thank YoU!!
Joey, I understand your anxiousness about the OneWheel and applaud you for giving it a go. I had a really bad wreck on my OneWheel (which was under circumstances that were not my own) and it unnerved me too. The main thing to overcome the anxiety is to just accept whatever it is you accomplish that day. Ride 2 minutes....GREAT! Go over a small bump....GREAT! Just go at your own pace, compare to NO ONE and take your own journey on it. I am happy my video was one that stood out to you. I hope you will keep me updated on your progress. Wishing you happy carefree riding in your future.
I think its better to choose which leg goes first if you think what leg is first for you when you slide on ice. Thats how I was tought when started snowboarding.
Thank you! Speed control will come naturally with experience. If you focus in it, it will be harder to control and learn. It is surprisingly natural. Just think it and it goes! 🙂
@@InternalTaiChi this is exactly what I was thinking but I wondered if any specific tips for shifting balance like is it based on center line of mass, or muscle movement or both.
@@shwimmy11 Great question. My primary tip for shifting is to use your HIP rather than leaning your shoulders or body forward. If you use your body mass/center line to shift weight forward, then you are not in a good position for recovery should things get out of hand. If you use your hip instead, so jutting out your hip toward the front wheel and your shoulders remain over the wheel, then you can quickly recover and likely prevent going over the front of the board. I think of my hip as the accelerator: jutting hip forward accelerates, drawing the hip back under you slows it down. Does this make sense? Keep your knees bent, and shift the hip. And don't forget to look where you want to go, not down in front of you. Hope this helps! Maybe I need to do another video a Part II. It is a great question. 🙂
Very good and informative video, especially with the explanation of how to easily do the heel lift method. My only question is about the phone tidbit, you say to maybe put in your left pocket instead of your right pocket -- would this be reversed if you ride regular?
Thank you for your comment. Yes, you are absolutely correct. Put your phone in the non-leading hip pocket. If you fall that's where we take the hit... Leading hip and shoulder.
Thank you. Yes you can leave your phone at home. However, on longer rides you should have the phone because the OW alerts you to low battery status thru the phone app. It will make a loud beep when at 50% battery. You're OW will have less torque and can nose down and shut off if you push it once below 50%. So it's best to know when you've reached that point and to ride gently til you're home. Sometimes I also like to play with the settings during a ride. The app can track and map your ride as well.
I don't even have a OW, nor is it available in my country but I watched the whole vid haha. Just on a YT binge, dropping this comment to help with the algorithm.
Thanks for the vid! We live on a boat & are thinking of getting one of these for some of our land based missions. One question I have is, after the initial app install, does the phone need to be connected to data or can it be on flight mode with just blue tooth or wifi to board? A lot of the time we're in remote areas with no cell coverage. Thanks :)
You don't need your phone to ride your OW. However you do need your phone to monitor battery status and get low battery notifications. Hope this helps!
It varies from person to person. And I'm not sure that having board sport experience is an indicator of potential success. It took me about 2 weeks of patience to learn. However, I've seen others, even my age, get on it and learn it within a few hours. I would suggest renting one first. But don't make your decision based on that first hour. They were times where I thought I had made a mistake and purchasing it. But I stuck with it and allowed myself to progress at my own pace. Once I did that I was okay and my learning curve improved. Now I ride it without thought.
Thank you! As far as age, I think it depends on your agility and balance, not necessarily age. Also being sensible when riding- always riding within your limits and not pushing it. There is an over 40 onewheel FB page. I see many over 60+ post in that group. Maybe check it out! And more companies are renting now so you can give it a try and see what you think.
Hi Susan, what a delightful unexpected suprise to see you on a onewheel, not surprising to see your excellent clear instruction though. Ive been enamored of these things for years and the bug has now reached full infection and im ready to get one. Thanks for a great video and cheers from Australia. ( my tag has changed due to some unwanted attention but i purchased your Yang 24 course on udemy and we corresponded ) all the best.
How fantastic is that!?! You found me through Tai Chi and now through Onewheel. Thanks for your comment and for clarifying who you are. If you have a chance send me an email so I can figure it out a bit more. I have several folks from Australia. 😊 And have corresponded with a few. Let me know if you get a OW. Your Tai Chi balance will help you learn!
Now I’ve never snowboarded before but I used to skateboard a little bit I always rode right foot leading this would feel not good to ride left forward and have you slammed hard before?
You are welcome. Before purchasing you might try one out. Although if you purchase it, then the commitment is higher. When I first bought mine, I thought I had made a huge mistake... Especially the first two weeks. But I kept at it and now I'm so glad I have it! Good luck and if you get one be patient and eventually you will enjoy! 🙂
@@InternalTaiChi I don't know anyone with one, so I'm gonna try the whole leap of faith approach. That's what I did with RVing. My first night in an RV was 600 miles from home in the one I have now. I'm out here full-time. Wish me luck with the OneWheel! 😅
Excellent! Sounds like you’ll do great. Let me know how it goes! I was recently featured on the local news when I went camping at an RV park and rode by on my OneWheel. They decided to do a piece on me. It was great fun! RV and OW …a good combo!
@@InternalTaiChi Haha, I'm hoping it will go the way I envision it. I'm taking your advice of having realistic expectations. The smaller space in RV life is why I want the OneWheel. My mountain bike was foldable and still took up waaaaay too much space. Congrats on the feature!!
One thing I didnt consider before buying my Onewheel XR is condition or stucture of our pavements in East Europe. Onewheel is designed to run smoothly on beautiful clear and flat pavements in the US. Here this is pretty uncomfortable and I regret buying onewheel, besides that it is really much fun
I do understand your concern and challenge. I'd encourage you not to give up though. My first month of ownership, I too, thought perhaps I had made a mistake in purchasing the OneWheel. But if you stick with it what seemed impossible to ride prior will become doable and easier. I'm now riding easy mountain bike trails with some roots and dips. I never thought that would be possible! Your East Europe pavements will make you a better rider, though initially a challenge to learn on. Also I suggest riding in Mission setting, consider your tire pressure, and/or change tires. I have a treaded tire and ride at low psi. Helps alot. Good luck!
My wife just bought me the One Wheel GT for my 70th Birthday!!!..... and I love the thing, I need a whole lot of practice though,.. I'm pretty wobbly yet... hope to improve soon.
@@InternalTaiChi I've gotten pretty good so long as I ride on streets and sidewalks.... Having great fun but I'm not ready to try riding on our mountain trails just yet.
@@johnthompson8190 that's great news. Trail riding is a whole different riding game. It will definitely build confidence but it's not for everyone. Sidewalk floating is great unto itself. 👍
Lol.... Thank you for your positive feedback. I was actually borrowing a friend of mine's onewheel because mine was in the shop at the time of the video. He had about a thousand miles on his onewheel thus the worn tread. He has since gotten a new tire! I also replaced mine with a treaded tire. Thanks again for the positive comment!
@@InternalTaiChi that makes total sense! One question: OneWheel in 2023; worth the purchase? I saw everyone's comments a year ago saying that it was still having some service issues. But now that everything's for the most part resolved is it worth buying?
@@ryanbest4217 I have not personally purchased or ridden the GT. I have some OW friends that have one. I am perfectly happy with the performance of my OW so do not feel the need to upgrade. I'm very petite and light so I think the upgrade is unnecessary. However for bigger folks the GT might offer more torque and performance for a better overall experience.

Well done! Good info and clearly communicated!
Thank you! Please share it with other new OWers! I hope you enjoy your OW journey. I love my OneWheel!
Inter disciplinary concepts on rooting and movement. That is why I love your channel since the first day.
Well you just absolutely made my day. Thank you!!😊
@@InternalTaiChi I am glad to know that. 😊
Very helpful thank you!
You are welcome! 😊
amazing tutorial thank you you rock
Thank you! 😊
Excellent instructional video, thank you!!
Thank you! Enjoy riding your OW!
I think its better to choose which leg goes first if you think what leg is first for you when you slide on ice. Thats how I was tought when started snowboarding.
That should work too. Having lived in only hot climates I wouldn't know what it is like to slide on ice. 😊
You nailed it. Great video. I was hoping for a touch more on speed control but still a great video.
A perfect tutorial! I am going to buy one now! Thank you!!
Thanks so much. Enjoy! Always ride within your limits and have fun.
Thank you Susan, I would love to get one of these but I'm not 20-something any more, but used to ride a skateboard in youth.
I'm 57. 😊 Go for it!
Excellent tutorial! Big Thanks.
You are welcome. Happy OneWheel riding!
Excellent Susan! ThanK you so much..
Thank you! You are very welcome. Happy riding. 😎
Excellent video, thank you.
Can you not just 'program' the One Wheel and then leave the phone at home?
@@InternalTaiChi
Yes I see what you are saying.
Thanks again.
Excellent content!
Thank you!
What an amazing video.
Thank you 😊
love the editing 😍

Amazing tutorial, thank you!
Thank you! Hope it helps. Happy riding!
Great video!!! I enjoyed watching and you are a super cool woman!!! 🙌🏼😎❤️
☺️ thank you!
I don't even have a OW, nor is it available in my country but I watched the whole vid haha. Just on a YT binge, dropping this comment to help with the algorithm.
Thank you! I appreciate the help.
Awesome video
Thanks!
Great day-one tutorial, much appreciated
Thank you! Enjoy your OneWheel!
Excellent. Your video is a keeper.
Thank you very much! 😊
Great tutorial! Thank you for doing this!
Thank you! Beset of luck to you in your OneWheel life!
@@InternalTaiChi Thanks for the reply :) We just bought 2! Second hand from another yachtie. So excited!
@@5kiwisafloat wonderful! I'd love to get updates and hear how it's going. Now you'll have 'sea legs' and 'OW legs!' 😆
How difficult is it to learn how to ride this i have never ridden a board of any kind my entire life and watching you ride looks so fun😊
Excellent video ... Thank you!
Thank you!
What an excellent tutorial 😊 is 68 too old to try do you think?
This is a great video for any true beginner. Thank you.
Thank you! :-)
Your Tai Chi balance will help you learn!
there is also a seting so if you lean back enough it will turn off
I did not know that. I thought that was on the smaller OneWheel, not the XR. Can you clarify? Thank you!
This is going to help a lot
👍 Have fun!
Im so glad you made this video.
Thank you! I had fun making it. 😊
This was helpful as I anxiously await the arrival of my Onewheel XR! Thanks!
You are welcome! Have fun!!
waiting on my pint x to ship!!! so excited to start riding and this video calmed my nerves a bit :)
Great! Enjoy your new ride!
Great tutorial for beginners! I,m hoping to get one of these soon and you video has definitely helped 👍
Thank you! Enjoy your future OneWheel!
Thx very much so excited to be riding my OW in a few weeks my dad just ordered one today for us
Have fun! Let me know how it goes.
@@InternalTaiChi thanks I’ll let you know

She should really be a high school teacher, great teacher
Lol....I used to be a high school band director. Now I teach adults Tai Chi 5 days a week. I love to teach! Thanks for the positive feedback.
thanks for the great video!!
My pleasure!
Great video. I am also a Xero Shoes fan. So good for riding.
Thank you! Also for the validation on the Xero shoes. There is such a push for wearing Vans that I was wondering what others thought about Xero shoes.
Great tips! Thank you!
Thank you! Enjoy the ride.
This was lovely. Thank You
Thank you! 😊
I thought that George was The Guy who was a little bit like Casper, the guy who did stuff around the house that Not A Living Soul could remember doing
Lol! I remember Casper!
Now I’ve never snowboarded before but I used to skateboard a little bit I always rode right foot leading this would feel not good to ride left forward and have you slammed hard before?
Rude with whatever foot is most comfortable in front.
thats a really nice tutorial! very "filmora" like my videos haha ... but the essence is explained extremely well!
thanks you!
Thank you.
Thank you thank you
Nice video, love your channel.
Thank you!
Great tutorial. I'm thinking of getting one. Thanks!
Helps alot. Good luck!
I'm goofy footed too. I used to skateboard and I was the only one out of all my friends who ride like that.
Lol.....just own it. We goofy footed riders rock! 😊
@@InternalTaiChi Darn right! Lol

My wife just bought me the One Wheel GT for my 70th Birthday!!!..... and I love the thing, I need a whole lot of practice though,.. I'm pretty wobbly yet... hope to improve soon.
Wow! That is fantastic! It takes some time but soon you’ll wonder why it felt so challenging. Wishing you the best.
What are those grips on the Gerber of the other board called??? I see them all over the place but idk what's they are called to search for
SilverHandle for OneWheel. Craftandride.com
*Well done!* Are you still _floating_ or have you gotten injured and have given it up ?
I still float from time to time. I am not injured....lol. It is a great feeling to float on the OW!
The tutorial was amazing! But you gotta change that tire, sis. I was seeing some tread on that thing 😅
