MJ was one of the richest athletes in the world at that time. So rich in fact, he dedicated his entire basketball salary with the Wizards to families of 9/11 victims. He was basically their boss with an ownership stake in the franchise. Why tf would all of his teammates chip in for a retirement gift!? It doesn’t even make logical sense. So, for a little perspective, while he was “poisoning the locker room”, in the 2001-02 season the Wizards started the season 2-9 (.182). The Wizards played 46 games before MJ got injured, and they were 26-20 (.565) in those games, which was good for fourth best in the Eastern Conference. To break it down a little further, after that 11 game start, the Wizards had the best record in the Eastern Conference, going 24-11 (.686) in those next 35 games that Mike played.
I’m not sure it wasn’t the locker room that was poisoned as much as there were a player or a few players who felt like they weren’t getting their shine with MJ leading the way. And btw, in games without MJ that season, the Wizards were 7-15 (318), which was second worst in the Eastern Conference, and 4th worst in the entire league. They were fourth worst in the league the season before Mike came back, so maybe those disgruntled players were more comfortable being losers with no accountability.

They definitely all liked the 3 rings each of them got thanks to his hard nose attitude. How else do you think the 91-93 bulls won? Cuz Mike made sure that each and every role player knew their job backwards and forwards, even though they weren't the most talented guys, he galvanized them into a well-oiled machine around him. And if that meant he had to be a hard on, micromanage them, and force them to rerun the same play 20 times in a row at practice, till they got it right every time, then it was worth every minute.
They all admitted that Jordan's hard knows attitude towards them was necessary when recently interviewed in the last dance.
