  • Check out ‘People Who Died’ by The Jim Carroll Band off their album ‘Catholic Boy’. Recently featured in the new 'Suicide Squad 2' film.
Jim Carroll expressed the Bomb-fear anticipation, the optimistic nihilism and glittering darkness of the 1980s that we who were there felt even if we couldn’t communicate it ourselves. When John Lennon was assassinated in front of the Dakota in December 1980, “People Who Died” was one of the most-requested songs on FM radio, just after Lennon’s own “Imagine.” Steven Spielberg chose “People Who Died” to play during the opening scene of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial. “People Who Died” tapped a mainline. It was a hit even before it was released, and, as Newsweek’s Barbara Graustark noted, it “propelled [Carroll] from underground status… to national attention as a contender for the title of rock’s new poet laureate.”

@@Crunch_Buttsteak shouldn’t really be an issue tho. I understand the annoying factor of people just learning about certain music/songs due to film but oh well, that’s how people broaden out their taste in music at times. Combining two forms of entertainment to create something captivating is a good way to get people hooked onto something, just like this movie did with its soundtrack. If anything it should be a joy that people find out about music through film, and vice versa

My friend Greg Q. and I arrived at Elliot Bay Books just in time for Mr. Carroll to begin his in-store reading promoting his (then) new book "The Book of the Nods". He opened with a short poem I still remember, " Sure, I've got a ? ( I can't remember what word he used for needle, hypo, rig, works, ) I use it to baste my tiny turkey". Huge laughs in the packed bookstore. We sat through his evening of select poems, prose pieces enraptured by his words, although it was obvious nearly everyone in the place was already familiar with nearly every word already. Still his grittiness, his brutal honesty and his jaded but still naive narratives cut us to ribbons like razors, rusted and dirty from the grime only found in the darkest corners of the inner city. We waited until after the book signings, polite chit chat and all, until the three of us ( plus a couple staffers) were all that remained. We approached the frail and unassuming redheaded bard and invited him to come with us to see Green River (featuring future members of Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone and Pearl Jam) play at the Vogue. He politely declined and seemed sincerely not annoyed with our late requests for autographs in our well read and dog- eared copies of Forced Entries, Living at the Movies, and the aforementioned Nods. A great memory. RIP, brother.

    By the very same bikers
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died
Teddy sniffing glue he was twelve years old
Fell from the roof on East Two-nine
Cathy was eleven when she pulled the plug
On twenty six reds and a bottle of wine
Bobby got leukemia, fourteen years old
He looked like sixty five when he died
He was a friend of mine
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died
G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten
They died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan
Sly in Vietnam, took a bullet in the head
Bobby OD'd on Drano on the night that he was wed
They were two more friends of mine, I miss 'em, they died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends and they died
Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room
Bobby hung himself from a cell in the tombs
Judy jumped in front of a subway train
Eddie got slit in the jugular vein
And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others
This song is for you my brother
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died

Some years back, I contacted Jim Carroll and asked him to amend the lyrics to this song to include friends of mine and people in my family who have died.
He never responded, so I think any claim to this being an all-inclusive compendium of those who have died is on very thin ice.

I did far too much acid in my youth, and I can not fully imagine what it would be like to witness such a surreal, traumatic event in that state of mind . . . yet I can imagine enough of how it would effect me afterwards that I know beyond any doubt I wouldn't want any experience even close to that. The surrealism involved in seeing such a tragedy would be so intense, and enduring, that I probably would continue to feel high on acid for several days after!

I had 2 budz that I used to hang with and they’re both gone. One died as if he didn’t care, and the other (Travis Cooper) gave his life for a stranger. He was on his way home after work and he came across 4 young guys beating on a native. He hollered at them, and they turned their attention to Travis beating him to death. The first victim survived.
A few years ago, I had a dream where I bumped into Travis in the busiest street that I have ever seen. He took off and I tried to follow him but there was so many people (and no cars or vehicles of any kind), but I seen him go into a building, I followed. The door was very thick and made of wood, it seemed odd and very old looking. It was very dark inside, I was trying to feel my way around when a bunch of lights came on at the far end of a huge room. I seen him on stage as he started playing music, it was very loud, but sounded perfect.
    Then I woke up

You'd think going into this song at first that it would be dark or depressing but then the balls-to-the-wall guitars kick in and then the lyrics themselves: more sad, poignant and absurdly funny than dark at all. RIP Jim - a fantastic creature of New York City in one of its best periods.

Astute observation! Jim Carroll played at Jazz Berry's in Rochester NY 1991, he was sitting on a stool in front of both restrooms checking people's IDs as they went in! Then he read for 45 min. Then our local Rock Gods The Earthlings backed Jim on 8 or 9 songs. Quite the stellar evening! Punk for sure! Very funny guy.

    RIP
Blackguard- His "plan" to get Team 1 in safely literally blew up in his face.
Mongal- Chosen brawns before brain and leapt into her firey grave.
Captain Boomerang- Mongal's dumb decision led to his demise. Atleast he held his boomerang when he died.
Javelin- Gunned down and we never saw him do anything sadly. He lives on within his javelin which was passed onto Harley Quinn.
Savant- Ran away from the war zone but forgot about the bomb in his skull.
Thinker- Rest in pieces. Shouldn't have been experimenting on alien sea stars.
Rick Flag- Katana never had his front which led to his death by a floor shard.
Polka Dot Man- Yes, you were and always will be a Superhero! Could've lasted longer if he took cover from a giant sea star arm.
