@17:30-18:15 When I operated on the 3 usually around here I pick up so much speed at 50th Street before I get to the timers north of 42nd street. I'll be blazing here at 48 to 50 miles an hour. It was one of my favorite lines to operate when I was in the A division. The express section from 96 to Chambers was the beast on this line very different on the 2 but on the 3 with the R62 that was the beast!!

I grew up riding this line. My grandfather worked for the TA as it was called in his day. He'd done a variety of different jobs working as a ticket agent, a conductor and a motorman, till his vision began to fail and he went back to selling tokens.
Occasionally when my parents wanted a night out I'd spend a weekend with my grandparents. Often to get to them my mom would take me to meet him at work at the end of his shift and we'd ride this line to the last stop. Occasionally if he knew who the motor man was we'd stay on into the yard just past New Lots which was closer to where he ad my grandmother lived. We'd often climb down from the train walk to the office and out Linden Blvd. Today I'm sure you could lose your job taking a kid into or out of the yards.
I think my love of trains came in part from those visits

Not sure if it's just the older R62s but seems like they can really rip it on the express stretches on Broadway/7th Ave -- for example at 15:08 it may just be relative from the vibrations and framerate but seems like it must be doing close to 40-50mph coming into 72nd street (over the switches and slight curve, no less), so much so it looked like it jarred the camera slightly out of alignment from going so fast over the switch. Either way, cool video! Hope the MTA eventually increases speeds further as CBTC gets rolled out across the system (doubtful, but one can hope!). I feel like growing up 15-20 years ago the subway operators would blast into stations at max speed then slam on the brakes at the last second. Too often now its slow slow slow but love seeing the express really get some speed!

    • @wtaenyc
      @wtaenyc  2 года назад +11

Thank you so much for leaving this heart warming comment. It’s truly an honor to know that we are able to bring you back to those younger years where you had those experiences on the older modern trains; red birds, those were our favorites. As for the R62, there’s something about the SMEE trains that once the motors are running perfectly, they just seem to rip down the tracks. Shoutout to the track alignment, of course, as we are sure that the track layout, like you mentioned, is a contributing factor to these speeds, the SMEE still seems to outclass the modern trains.
As they hopefully get to install CBTC on the 7th ave line within the next couple years, it would be a joy to see. We would love to see a system that is, not only the cleanest, but the fastest and more amazing in the world. After all, it is New York City. This would be our chance to show the world how great we are after the tragedy of the pandemic. Make the underground as beautiful and amazing as the skyscrapers, this city would be untouchable. But it’s like you mentioned, “one can only hope.” Let’s send positive blessings that our hopes become realities.
Truly appreciate you for sharing and thank you for your support.

One proposed extension for the 3 from New Lots. This is a very popular extension, and the MTA should definitely consider this.
First extension: the 3 will make its way from New Lots Avenue in the same elevated structure. Same speeds, everything. Its like New Lots was like any other stop.
    First stop at Shepherd Avenue.
Shepherd Ave - accessible, ordinary design, side platform, connection to the B15 bus to JFK Airport.
Would make a turn and go along Shepherd Ave, straight down.
The structure would ascend a bit because Shepherd is narrower than normal avenues.
Would go across Linden Boulevard to keep going along Shepherd.
    Next stop at Stanley Avenue.
Stanley Ave - accessible, cool designs, side platform, and connection to the B20 bus at Linden Blvd.
Going along Shepherd, making a very close stop.
Wortman Ave - accessible, ordinary design, side platform, no connections.
Structure would descend a tiny bit but faster speeds.
    Along Shepherd.
    Next stop…
Flatlands Ave - accessible, artistic design, island platform, connection to the B20, B84 and Q8.
Would make a curve to go along Flatlands, then make a turn to go along Essex Street.
The line would have to go underground due to the small proportions of Essex Street, being that it is very narrow.
    Quick stop at…
Essex St - accessible, side platform, ordinary design, and connection to the B84 bus service.
Normal tunnel, just slow speeds because the last stop is near.
    Last stop at…
Vandalia Ave - Gateway City Center Mall - accessible, nice design, cool entrance, underground, island platform, no connections.
    Announcements:
This is a Vandalia Avenue - Gateway City Center mall bound (3) local train. The next stop is, Shepherd Avenue.

The obvious one is the late night service (correct me if I'm wrong). During late night, the 3 Train ends at Times Square, but 1 and 2 continues to run. Which is that there were no 3 Train service between Times Square- 42nd Street and New Lots Avenue. But the 4 trains between Yankee Stadium and Woodlawn in the Bronx, are elevated, not underground. Until it reaches to the underground after departing 161 Street- Yankee Stadium on Brooklyn (or Manhattan) bound tracks. Now on to the 125th Street Station, there were no 5 Trains, just only 4 and 6 Trains. After the 4 Trains departs 125th Street Station, the 4 trains then switched to the local tracks along with the 6 train line starting at 116 Street on upper Manhattan all the way to Brooklyn Bridge on lower Manhattan. The 6 train ends there but the 4 Trains continues to run and stops a few station before going to Brooklyn. When the 4 Trains reaches to Brooklyn, the 4 trains now runs along with the 2 train line (no 3 and 5 trains) until at Franklin Avenue. When the 4 trains departs Franklin Avenue, the 4 trains then runs alone to Crown Heights. When it approaches to Crown Heights station, there will be no 3 Trains, just only the 4 lines. The 4 trains were supposed to terminate at Crown Heights but nope, it keeps going to New Lots Avenue on the 3 Train line. When the 4 Train departs Crown Heights, the 4 Train then once again goes to the Elevated line Tracks and runs until at New Lots Avenue. Now that's what I call it: "Obvious". Usually, the 4 trains runs on the elevated line in the Bronx, and not the Manhattan and Brooklyn. But when it comes to late night, the 4 trains still runs on elevated line between Yankee Stadium and Woodlawn in the Bronx but runs on the elevated line again in Brooklyn between Sutter Avenue and New Lots Avenue. That's very obvious to me (once again, correct me if I'm wrong)

      @patagard8253:
That's not the BMT line that you're seeing. It's the Utica Ave-bound IRT 4 express tracks descending to a lower level to bypass the BMT Q/B's 7th Ave Station. The level changes of the trackways inside this six-track tunnel under Flatbush Ave is off the charts complex! Sometimes the local and express IRT tracks are above the BMT tracks, at other sections they are at the same level, and in others, below! All six tracks rise and descend to avoid the stations that they don't stop at, and not just for that reason. In addition, the tracks are climbing onto a hill and then back down, just as Flatbush Ave is doing above them. You just got to love the complexity of the NYC subway system!

I’m old enough to remember when this was the #2 routre. If you wanted to transfer to the L from Junius, you had to exit the system as there was no connection back then. That was a relic of the old IRT and BMT rivalry.
Any old heads from NYC remember the station that used to be in the basement of the department store on Fulton St? I remember my Mom used to take us shopping, then we literally went to the store’s basement and caught the subway home from there.

@@whereisthedollarYup! I remember that entrance to the 2 and 3 trains back in those days, when the store itself had wooden escalators and gilded-cage hydraulic elevators. I remember an express elevator going directly to the 8th (top) floor where the toy department was located. Also in the region of the subway entrance, there was the food/snack counter whose scents and aromas trapped many a customer into an immediate purchase!
I hope all that hasn't been eliminated when the subway access was sealed up....

    Part 7:
On July 10, 1983, the 2 and 3 trains swapped terminal in Brooklyn, with 2 trains terminating at Flatbush Avenue and 3 trains terminating at New Lots Avenue. These changes were made to reduce non-revenue subway car mileage, to provide a dedicated fleet for each service, and to provide an easily accessible inspection yard for each service. The change allowed the 2 to be dedicated to 239th Street Yard and allowed the 3 to be assigned to Livonia Yard. With the rerouting of 3 trains, train lengths along the New Lots Line were reduced from 10 cars to 9 cars, within acceptable crowding levels, and train lengths along the Nostrand Avenue Line were increased from 9 to 10 cars, reducing crowding.
Beginning on August 5, 1990, late-night shuttles between 148th Street and 135th Street were discontinued and replaced by shuttle buses. On September 4, 1994, late-night shuttles between 148th Street and 135th Street were resumed but were discontinued again on September 10, 1995. This was a cost-saving measure due to low ridership.

Amazing! Fun fact - 145th Street station is the only station in the system that can't accommodate full-length ten-car trains. Only the first six and a half train cars make the platform. Only the first five cars of a train open here because the R62 subway cars used on the 3 service are configured in five-car sets and each must have their doors opened at the same time. Like all IRT stations, It was initially built for trains shorter in length than the standard eight to ten cars used by the subway. In the 1950s and 1960s, all of the other IRT stations were either lengthened to 10 cars or closed. It is also the only station where there is no northbound entrance as it is the second to last stop. Riders can exit but no enter the northbound platform

Yes. Additionally, the 145th St station also used to be the last stop on the northbound Lenox Ave IRT line. In 1968, the line was extended into 148th in the Lenox Ave yard. The current 148th St terminus sits under a high school and an apartment complex.

I've been on the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, S and E Lines every time I go to New York and they're very popular. I'm from London UK and there is a similarity between the 2 Cities with their Underground systems.
    1. They're both big.
    2. They're older with London being the oldest system which opened in 1863 where's New York opened theirs in 1904.
    3. London has the cleanest and colourful trains (all in the London Underground Coperate Livery) which are made from aluminium where's New York keeps the traditional Silver Steel design on their trains.
I love those videos mate, they're really good! I wish there was narration on them just like what Video 125 do in the UK when they do their Drivers Eye View Videos where they have narrators talking through a certain history of a Railway journey itself with a lot of interesting detail to it as well.

    • @wtaenyc

It is truly an honor that someone like yourself, who has been blessed to share two of the biggest systems on the planet, is able to point out the two similarities by watching our content. We also appreciate your suggestion at the end and it’s definitely something we have to agree with.
Our idea for that type of narration was to have that type of narrative, educational content, be experienced in the Transit Museum, as a treat to those that bless it with their presence.
We will, however, discuss this as a team about possibly bringing that experience to this channel; It would truly be an honor if we could get the opportunity to do something similar, with this quality, for the oldest system in the world. It would truly be a spectacle that world deserves to see and enjoy. We can only aim to become a system that is just as clean and one day be the spectacle of transit systems in the world.
It will take loads of work but every moment in history started with one small idea; it’ll be an honor to let this channel be one of the ones to start that movement.

It seems these trains got a lot faster since I rode on them all the time years ago, but now all of the train expansion they're doing, they need to expand the 5 or 6 line to Co-op City or have them make a new commuter train station there too

Damn that sucks how u gotta follow that slow ass 2 train from 135 to Franklin Ave lol. Its just like the Lefferts A train following the Far Rock train from Rockaway Blvd to 207. Very nice video lots of places where switches used to exist. Express service along the Elevated can be done now I see how the switches at Utica can line up bi directional express service to New Lots. I see that the tail track is closed off now but I do remember them having 3 trains in the relay instead of 2.

The 3 should have an extension from Lenox Terminal. Or maybe just do it via the 2 to Nereid? Well, I already did a G train extension and an L one. I hope this one will be good aswell, so you guys can enjoy it! Let us get started! Oh and by the way, this is the last one I am doing without a request, so from now on you have to request to get.
The 3 would go from Lenox Terminal, going up along Adam Clayton Powell Junior Boulevard. Long name. Phew. Anyway, not making a stop yet, it would go UP along “Long Name” Boulevard.
After that, it would make a stop at West 153 Street, and YES. It is just called “West 153 Street”. I ain’t adding that long name Boulevard. No connection to any train, but connection is available to the M2 Bus Service.
Next, the 3 would go elevated! Wow! For a bridge… I know this is more fantasy than real, but it would go on the bridge “Macombs Dam Bridge”. They should add tracks for the 3, and it would make its way to The Bronx! Yay! It would go back underground somewhere around Major Deegan Express Way, like a portal.
Oh and guess what! When it starts to go underground again, it goes over Exterior Street! If you read the L train extension, you would know that it is one of the stops the L makes when it enters The Bronx. Actually, it is the first one.
The 3 would go in a tunnel similar to that of a tunnel when a train travels to a different borough.
Then, the tunnel would be like the 7th Avenue Tunnel, but less lights.
Oh and, it would go along Macombs Dam Bridge after it reached The Bronx, just it is underground now.
Finally, it would make a stop at East 161 Street. The B and D would actually be right there, just not making a stop there, with the 3.
The 3 would still go up along Macombs Dam Bridge, with it finally turning into… Drumroll please…. JEROME AVENUE!
Well, the 3 would go along Jerome Avenue, now, I don’t know about naming it the “Jerome Avenue Line”. That is a trademark for the 4 lol.
Well, it would make its way along Jerome, and the tunnel would be similar to that of the Queens Boulevard Line. But brighter actually.
It would go along Jerome, finally making a stop at East 165th Street. No connection to the 4. The station would look like Steinway Street, bland but pretty cool anyway.
It would keep going along Jerome Avenue when suddenly, it. Goes. Elevated! It would be the same height as the Jerome Line 4, and you could see Yankee Stadium if you look back. Really nice sight.
Next, since Jerome Avenue goes to the right, the 3 would go to Shakespeare Avenue, making a stop there. It would be elevated. No connection.
It would go along Shakespeare Avenue until it reaches West 168 Street. It would make a stop, West 168 Street - Woodycrest Avenue. No connection, only Bus connection is the Bx18a.
After, it would make a turn, going up along West 168 Street, and entering the neighborhood of Highbridge.
Then, it would make a stop, Nelson Avenue. Connection to Bx18b down the street.
After, it would go along West 168, passing Ogden Avenue, then stopping at University Avenue. Connection to the Bx18a and Bx18b down West 168 Street.
Next, the 3 would have to make a turn to go along University Avenue, since West 168 is coming to an end.
It would make its way up to West 170 Street, making a stop there. And, it is the last stop. Well, that was my extension for the 3 to The Bronx!
Hope ya enjoyed! And, request any other lines you want me to extend, and also, if ya don’t mind, please tell me the terminal you want to extend! Other than that, thank you for reading!
    Buh - Bye!

I offer many many kudos for your series of informational video's on the NY Subway system. As a life long railroad enthusiast I find your series not only informational but also praise the management of the system for continuously improving and maintaining the system. I have written you before regarding the excellent job all your employees who contribute their hard work in keeping your system running.
I would like to offer a constructive comment which I believe will enhance your wonderful informative program. As most likely, the audience of your information most likely is World Wide and as such (myself for one) is most likely not that familiar with the various locations that the Subway/Elevated serves. Might I suggest that some sort of identification be included with each video you publish. I am thinking of superimposing a small map in one corner if the picture being served by the system. This could appear momentarily in a frame or at the beginning of each program. This will give the viewer some indication of the location of the system being shown plus it would be an advertisement of your beautiful City. Again, thank you for a wonderful series of information.
I do hope you continue this series as a wonderful informative venue for your World Wide audience.

Like us, you too are an artist and we appreciate that you can take a look at our videos and it can help spark the creativity inside of you. It is a wonderful idea and we will discuss it with the team and see what can be done. What’s certain is that it is something that aligns with our future plans, not just for this channel, but for this city and we can’t wait to share them with you.
Thank you so much again for feeling comfortable to share that with us and we hope we continue to earn your support. Sending you and your family nothing but positive energy.
