It's really a shame that car manufacturers left the concept of "form follows functions" even further with the wide use of touch screens instead of physical buttons, to save development costs. Its totally not understandable that you're not allowed to use your phone while driving but at the same time you're allowed to fiddle with seat heating or climate settings in some under menu of the cars screen, while driving

    • @AlexTunstall
      @AlexTunstall 2 года назад

You're not allowed to at all. You can still be fined/given points for distracted driving. They always recommend pulling over when changing settings.

Another really great review, Thomas. I plan to replace my Leon ST with either new Leon ST or new Octavia estate, in the next 2 years. It has been a real help seeing the two reviews, both cars are good in so many ways. Styling on both is good, Leon is more sporty to look at and to drive but I like the styling of Octavia too, and it’s interior. Much will depend on pricing and specifications in the U.K. I use the Leon as my daily car and I bought it as an ex-demonstration car, 6 months old, saving a lot of money vs brand new!

An excellent and very helpful review together with the ones of Leon FR and Octavia! I agree that the trend to replace all the physical controls with a touch screen or voice control is not desirable, but it looks like soon there won't be much alternatives. So we just have to bite the bullet and accept that from now on learning the car's user interface is an essential part of getting familiar with one's new vehicle in order to make the most out of it.
As was mentioned in the review, winter/summer tires, different wheel sizes and in this case, the optional DCC system, very much change the nature of any car. Therefore, it would be better, if the vehicle tests could be conducted using a more standard version of the vehicle like in the case of Leon Xcellence, with 17 inch wheels which seem to be Leon's default size in most countries and without the DCC also.

I once drove a new Seat Ibiza that I got from a Touring company adn I was pleasingly surprised how good the build quality was. Especially I was excited how good the chassis was. Conserning the new Leon, I like that wooden element and I rather prefer this interoir design over the new Audi's. I think we are now in a historical period where every manufacturer tries to deliver the best solution to attract new customers.

@@autogefuehl I've seen it, very well done also. Unfortunatly the hybrid version of the Octavia isn't available yet for Belgium, and they already announced a smaller trunk. If I look to the Superb they talk about 2 different hybrid versions where one loses volume and the other doesn't... confusing.
The best way is to go see it for my self at the local dealer.

Imagine Autogefühl being a car brand. Premium. That would also be awesome, lol. Your slogan can be “In full HD, full screen, and full length. Let's go!” Yeah, does not make sense in this case...but it would still be a cute phrase. LOL, make it about €40 000 - €55 000. I would buy. That is my price range, and my current car is around that price range, lol. Also make a large family SUV too, around €70 000. I say all this because I had a dream about it. Seems like watching Autogefühl videos before going to sleep for the past month and thinking about a new car to buy created this dream, lol. 😂

What would you do: driving on the highway, suddenly fog is coming on (maybe A8), very dense, and your rear window gets blind because your dog in the baggage apartment is breathing heavy now. Of course it is night and you are going 130 km/h, so you have to break simultaneously and watch traffic . How do you engage fog lights and window heating? And if you don't do it on the left with a good chance to switch off lights completely, why have these switches? The frequency of use should be not the criteria, otherwise the manufacturer could hide the switch for emergency indicator lights in the infotainment.

Nice review, and very close to the main VW competitor the Octavia. You could really make up your choice.
The loss of the climate knobs is a dealbraker for me. May test them next time. You might get on someone's nerves, but it is actually a safety consern for me. As a user of the old VW knob system it's a waste not to have them. You should test that on the move, especially when you are alone, the fan speed and the air output, the a/c on off. I did not see sync button to equalise the passenger and driver temps/may be it's somewhere/. Also one major button - the block for "outside air" button. I use it quite a few times, more often in winter times. Here in the morning now is 20 degrees in the afternoon 35 /Celsius/ so messing with the temp , fan speed and a/c on or off is common in spring, like every day. Every morning temp set to 20 or 22, fan low, a/c off. Afternoon temp set to 20 in the beginning, fan high to blow of the hot air from the vents and initially bring the temp down, a/c Off. Then while driving temp to around 26, fan on Auto, a/c On and sometimes if the a/c is too cold I lower the fan speed, or move the air towards the feet or both. Having those knobs is just a must-have as I do not see that happening while driving.

I would like to see a comparison between Golf, Leon and Octavia concerning the switches for lights, rear and front max heating and a few other things that seem to be very different with each model. E.g. the Octavia has three (physical?) buttons left of the steering wheel, just for lighting and the Leon/Golf have only soft touch buttons and for heating as well below the light switches? I also would like to see how the smaller Radio (e.g. Skoda Radio Swing with the volume knob) changes the operation of certain things.

Both in golf 8 and the new leon, the removal of physical buttons is a no-go for me. It should be illegal for car manufacturers to remove commonly used functions and place them on a touch screen. I foresee many accidents due to this, as it is the exact same as fiddling with a phone while driving.

Golf is in trouble. The new Leon and Octavia both look better than the Golf Mk8 (particularly in estate versions) and both have improved their refinement.
I had a Mk7 golf GL 63 plate, then a 16 plate Leon Xperience ST and now a 19 plate Octavia Mk3 face-lift SE-L. Each have different strengths. My only problem with Leon was practicality - it was the smallest of the three. With Octavia refinement - body lean/roll and wind noise. With the Golf the spec required was very expensive.
But if they've made the Leon bigger and made the Octavia more refined.....why would I pay £3k more for a Golf?

NCAP should reduce safety stars for all those distracting touch features. It's just too stupid that you used to have knobs to set the lights or the temperature. You could operate it almost without looking. While now you have to search the touch surface without touching it, and keep looking while adjusting something.

As it is I'm losing the real buttons and knobs of my mib1 Amundsen by doing that. All these touch controls are difficult to use stationary let alone driving. Dangerous IMHO. This isn't progress. Its a shame because the back really doesnt look that nice. They tried too hard whereas the skoda octavia looks properly in proportion and smart.

Things NOT to do. Don't copy the Telsa Model 3 by making everything touch screen. What a terrible trend. Rant over. Ok not quite over, my god, vents controlled by a screen control? Who thought, omg, sliding that manual vent control is sooooooo dangerous/laborious! We should reinvent that!
Ok back ot the review, while you were driving on the highway through that construction area, I kept looking in the mirror & it was driving me crazy thinking that white van was tailgating you! Back off bro, stop harassing our Thomas! But that BMW wagon passing you was very nice. Ok, yes I was taking in the view a lot, but I was listening to you Thomas. It's just that this car is kind of dull. Maybe it was the fridge colour that lulled me to sleep. Go get the Golf R wagon if you want a cool wagon. Ok, blow your load and get a RS4 wagon. These little engines are like getting a game misconduct in hockey or getting a red card in football.
