- dition of Let's Fix Sh*!. As the title implies, we habitually turn wrenches on all kinds of things. In this episode we will show you how to rebuild the water pump on an outboard motor. This video features a 1976 Evinrude 70hp motor; however the process is fundamentally the same for all outboards.

How did you remove the shift rod ? and how do you get at the starter bolt ?
The shift rod is the hardest part and he didn't show that!
The shift rods on these motors are a PAIN! There is a bolt under the powerhead that you can barely get to that frees up the shift rod. But that's not even the hard part, getting the bolt back I place when reinstalling will make you instantly want a beer. Lol.
We show a lot more of the process on our other channel ruclips.net/user/c1solution
@@TheSudburyboy Do you have any insight on getting that shift rod bolt off ? Thanks
@@CoryandNicole If you can give a little info on how you get at that bolt it would be appreciated not much info out there. After that's done i will have that beer. Thanks
Hey man...I just did this whole same thing while waiting on the service manual for my 1977 70hp evinrude...if honestly not that bad without any experience doing this...but might I point out the mention you used to put housing over the impeller forcefully is probably how the original came out funny..your supposed to install the impeller into housing and fins/fingers have to be cupped the right way..if your looking at housing upside-down with impeller in it...cupping should be going clockwise then once flipped over onto the top of outdrive it will be cupped counter clockwise so it pushes cold water up to motor...Unfortunately I'm learning all this aswell and 1st time mine was cupped wrong way and those 2 larger holes on the back of the lower unit about 6 inches down from power head should have water coming out of them if impeller is installed properly....Js I learned this myself with trial and error...they doing all this twice sucked but its easier the second time in same weekend
Thank you for your video. I found it soooo helpful when putting the cover over the new impeller.
You're very welcome!
I felt your pain in my sole when that socket dropped off the deck I swear 😂😂
Thanks. Only bought the impeller might get whole setup
Thanks for the video, wasn’t sure what the best method was to get the housing over the impeller!
You hold on to tools as good as I do😂
Put the boat in reverse first and i use a FLAT head to push the shift rod back in place . Also I use a swivel head to put the nut in
Nice job.
Sweet! Nice work guys!
Thank you!
Just picked up a clean 76 johnson 75 hp stinger, want to put it on my ocean fishing boat.
What i needed to know was lower end removal.😂
No worries! We've got a video on that too.

I didn’t see any water out the two hole. Is it pumping?
I have the same motor. By chance is there supposed to be a groumet of some sort that goes above the water pump housing and pressures arouns the water pickup tube?
You made a nice video :-)
The shift rod is the hardest part and you didn't show that!
Does the seal on the top of the pump housing that goes around the shaft,,,does it seal tight or is water supposed to go through there also?
what year is this 70 horse?
What year ? I have a 1975 model
I have a 1975 Johnson 70hp outboard. Do you happen to know why once I put it in gear it bogs down and shut off? Carbs, coils etc rebuilt. It getting fuel also. That’s why I’m watching your video. Any suggestions would help.
It's possible that the idle could be set too low
So how's the ole 70 do for you? Is it a Good runner & Is this motor used in saltwater? Thinking it looks Good for age- Thanks for making video!
This motor was in real good condition for the age! It doesn't look like it has ever been in saltwater and I have only used it in the local lakes.
Great Video, could you tell me how hard or tight should it be to turn the prob by hand, my seems to turn very hard/difficult. Thank you!
The prop should spin freely when in neutral. There will be more resistance when it's in gear though, but not impossible.
@@CoryandNicole thank you, just replaced the whole assembly and when in gear I have to use both hands to spin it, hoping that ones installed and with water running it will be better.
oh no u left the most important part out getting it apart theres a screw some where on top i cant see it got same motor
I see that new kit has wrong impeller
That new one needs another kind of key
You can see on the minute 2:25 the right one
And the minute 6 the new one is different
And whe he put the new impeller it has a good bit of play
I'm new on this things with boat
And I try to do it myself too
But all the impeller has to be same like the older one
wow, he's using the wrong impeller, the wrong gasket sealer and the wrong o-ring and grommet rubber sealant; did he actually lubricate the impeller; he did not seal the screws; he may have missed an o-ring in the impeller and under the metal cup. wow...
Good info, but listening to the one armed man was frustrating.
Being the one armed man was frustrating too! Will definitely recruit the wife as camera woman next time.
Jax though at 4 min !
He double checks our work 😉
