Smashing repair jeremy :-)) Well worth the time and money, my old mate (r.i.p) would call that a "Doozie of a motor" meaning brilliant/excellent or what ever you use :-) In this world of "throw away" its nice to see good old equipment repaired by a dedicated man like yourself.
Thanks for posting this video, it has been really helpful so far. One quick question, how do you hook up the shift linkage, you showed where it attaches, but what do you need to do to get it to connect to the hole of the shift rod? Thanks!!!
How can I disconnect the lower unit from the shifting linkage? I can't find the bolts to take off or the clip you are talking about. I have a 50hp Evinrude
I have a 1976 Johnson and I'm trying to take the foot off to replace the water pump. I'm not to savy with motors and trying to learn, I've removed the four screws on the foot but am having a time locating the drive shaft screw so I can drop the foot. Any advice?
Jeremy..I just pulled my prop since it is in rough shape and was going to get a new one and can see fresh gear oil seeping from around the hub o-ring.Would say this is pretty common on a 30 plus year old motor?Pretty slow leak.Is it critical you think to fix right away or can it be run for awhile .Probabley lots of old motors seeping out there. Not good for the environment though. ?
hi I have a 1993 30 hp Johnson ELS and after replacing the water pump it wont crank? hey quick question I did the install all seemed fine but starter wont crank motor? bat has the bat has juice, starter spins flywheel fast with plugs out. prop and flywheel will turn manually in drive but it is not easy. I can shift from F-N-to reverse, do you think the driveshaft be misaligned? It would break your arm trying to pull a rope manually in neutral. I should have I should have fired it up before I started the repair to check for any other problems but I didn't.. any thoughts would be great thanks
Hey man curious if this was making a rattle sound when you guys discovered it had an issue? I’ve gone through 3 lower units in less than a year and I refuse to buy another used one. they all sound like an engine rod knock.. someone said the dog clutch could be ruined?
Thanks for the videos. I just got a boat with a '82 evinrude 50hp. Took it to a shop. They said the compression was 100 and 90. They also said the lower end would not shift into forward or reverse (just wouldn't catch). They offered to sell me an early 90's 50hp Suzuki or 90's 40hp merc. What do you suggest?
My question is in reference to removing the lower unit to replace the water pump. I inherited a tri hull with a 1971 Evinrude 60 h.p. with electric shift. I have removed 6 bolts in the immediate area where the 2 units meet. The lower unit will not budge. Am I missing a hidden bolt? Does it matter if it is in gear or not?
+David H There is usually 7 bolts... 2 on each side of the cav plate... then 3... more one is hidden under the trim tab.. one is the trim tab and one just forward of the tab.
Hi names mike I was wandering I got a motor 78 Johnson 70hp from a friend taken apart the foot and I'm not sure of the order of the wafer bearing below water pump and the two thin shims .The order and direction of the wafer and shims any help would be greatly appreciated. Tks o and know any good place to order a complete seal kit .Tks again Mike Edwards
I bought an 1985 20hp johnson last summer and when I got it home and checked gear oil only a tablespoon of black gunky oil came out.I was sick.PO said it was in storage for many years, but his story changed a lot.How long will a gear box hold up with only a tiny bit of oil in it?It engaged and was not making any noise when I bought it.I did three fills and drains and the first drain was black and it cleaned up after the 2nd one pretty much.Seals do not leak and has yet to jump out of gear.Hard to say if it was run with no gear oil for any amount of time on the water.Almost seems someone drained it for storage and forgot to refill it?Will always be a question mark and hope it holds up!
newyota1 prob just leaked out while in storage. I would pressure test it and fix any leaks. Then fill with gear oil. If damage is done you will know pretty quick
Thanks-Have not seen any leaks thus far and it has not jumped out of gear under load yet.PO said there was no puddles under it from where it was sitting. Not sure what took place.I hope for the best.
Hello +Jeremy Fountain, I have a 1982 2 stroke Evinrude 90 HP and have hearing a loud squealing coming from the lower unit. It is intermittent but sounds like a bearing squealing at times only when warm. In idle, out of gear and in gear. It is not consistent and if I am to change the rpms it tends to go away for a bit and then come back. I took a video of the sound, but not getting far looking through a seloc manual I have in front of me. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I have a 78 Johnson I replaced lower unit water pump, now my shift shaft won't go into natural , I press down it's in reverse pull up sounds like it went to natural then pull up then it clicks up still in gear please help. Rob
I have a 1993 E40TLETF Evinrude that was running Great and Suddenly the Propeller just Stopped Turning but the Motor still ran Well... Paddled to shore and just wondering where to start looking??? BTW.. No Noise or anything when this failure occurred.. Was Under heavy load pulling a Tube behind boat at the time???
Great video, New n trying to learn what I can are those measurements in reverse neutral or forward gear I will assume reverse, cuz that's how u supost to take down the lower unit anyways rite? Just asking thanx
Friend, can you explain to me how many RPRs come out on the propeller shaft? for example entering 1,000rpm through the motor shaft and how much would the output intend?
Jeremy I have a question. I bought a 60hp Johnson and opened the lower unit drain plug and nothing but water came out, what should I do? First time boat owner and the boat ran great by the way.
Hi. I have a 1984 Evinrude 50 hp twin, small gear case. I would like to put a large gear case on it. That would make it like a commercial grade. Could someone help me with the correct gear case to search for. Thanks
i have a 1988 48spl evinrude and it does not have a place to put puller bo;ts and theres not enough space to drill no wholes for puller bolts ,,,,and i cant get it out any ideals
I just did mine. I used 3 large snap hooks i bought at home depot $2.50 each(marine section) and some chain. A puller from auto parts store. Open up the small end of the snap hook(where rope would go) that is what will hook around the 3 supports of the carrier. The top support is a little smaller than the other 2 so I had to adjust the hook by putting it in a vice and hammer it down. This way all chain lengths were 3 links. Removed long puller hooks off of the puller and used the shackles to connect the 3 chain pieces. I had to widen the link that went to the hook as it wouldn't fit through. 1983 Johnson 40...once ready had it out in 5 minutes
Great instructional video! I've got a 1986 Johnson that is still running great. OMC made some great engines.
Nice i been looking for how to set up the length of shift rod and here it is thanks brother God bless
That shift lever height was just what I needed Thanks!!

Saved my bacon with your special tool and the clear pictures of the shift rod
Great job on that repair…👍👍
Nicely done, those bearings can be super tough.
This was very helpful...I got the exact same suntracker & motor
Thanks for posting this video, it has been really helpful so far. One quick question, how do you hook up the shift linkage, you showed where it attaches, but what do you need to do to get it to connect to the hole of the shift rod? Thanks!!!
You give explicit instruction. Thank you.
Omgoodness you got lucky putting that back it lined right up sweet
Your such a cleaver man just had to watch all the video. Glad it went well for you.
Great information Jeremy, thank you for the video.
Nice job holding steady
Nice find just in time
Is the linkage adjusted in neutral?
I use reverse on merc but everyone uses forward on Johnsons I see
Nice job. Thanks.
What does the Phillips headed bolt do by the drain plug ?
great info learned alot thanks for sharing AWSOME
Great video. Love my Evinrude. Trying to learn about boat motors. Thanks.
Thanks for the video. If I have a sheared driveshaft- below the wafer bearing, is it worth a try getting out?
Jeremy, thanks very much for this. I learned a lot.
Not most only new guys dont line it up i need that tool i use a bass pro stick
Great video however, please do screw back the canter propeller nut back to the shaft when pulling the oil seal housing out.

went from apart directly to "got it put back together".....would have been nice to have some hints on how you put it back together.
terrieb24 agree

I got 70 Johnson . its start 'but when you put it in gear it does not want to pick up speed, full throtal does pick up speed

I have a 1981 johnson 60hp and it is leaking. Is that the seals or the water pump?
i have a 2004 115hp jonson the bearing carrier does not seem to go in the last 1/4 in do you have any trick to get in in al the way
Is that 21-23/32 from the bottom of your stick to the bottom of the bolt or to the center of the bolt?
do you know if the shift shaft adjustment length is on a 05 johnson 50hp 2 cylinder ? thanks

i am sure it spun the hub in the prop.
Great video, New n trying to learn what I can are those measurements in reverse neutral or forward gear I will assume reverse, cuz that's how u supost to take down the lower unit anyways rite? Just asking thanx
Milton Solis I think u pull in neutral not 100% sure
Where do I find a 1992 lower unit cheap. They are like hens teeth
Friend, can you explain to me how many RPRs come out on the propeller shaft? for example entering 1,000rpm through the motor shaft and how much would the output intend?
Count teeth on pinion and divide by the number of teeth on spur gear. That will give you the reduction
Does a 1995 50 HP Johnson use the same 21 23/32 length on the shift linkage?
thank u
Can a 70 hp an a 75 hp propeller interchange?
Jeremy I have a question. I bought a 60hp Johnson and opened the lower unit drain plug and nothing but water came out, what should I do? First time boat owner and the boat ran great by the way.
Pressure test the lower unit and see where it’s leaking. Prop seals, shifter seal and gasket, drive shaft seal Are the most common leak points
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 thanks for getting back to me brother
The easiest way ever is to dunk the whole gear case in a barrel of water and pump it up. Watch for bubbles Kind of like finding a Leak in a tire
@@THEMOWERMEDIC1 great idea, will try that today. I will gather up the stuff to make a homemade pressure test rig.
"Good vid. Jeremy, I like the common sense make ur own tool approach, an E~Bay's ur friend!

+karl chesser Use chain..cut last link like a "C" and hook that on bearing carrier cross-piece.
karl chesser I've got this same engine 48 spl.. can't get the snap rings out to save my life. was skipping in reverse.

My 04 merc 15 4stroke lower went out 2 days ago he said1300 for parts
Someone didn’t quote correctly
The relationship with the rule. the rod must be in neutral, my engine is evirude
75 hp year 1977
Just wondering how you pressed the barring carrier back in.
Glenn Smethurst it doesn't press back in. It slips in very easy
Thanks for reply. Very good video, well appreciated.
Just had this happen to me I was quoted $2000 to re build the gears and drive shaft. Is that about right?
No way that's too much
Do it yourself for 300.000
it didn't take much at all, just get it positioned just right
Is it nessasary to remove the foot to change the gears and dog? To me it doesnt seem like you need to.
U can try but I don’t recommend it
Putting that in a vise is totally nasty, especially without nylon jaws.
"Prop" Shaft
Don't throw case hardened steel, knife makers do great things with items these these broken gears!
Great video but now I`m stuck thank`s to your unfinished video :(
work good
why is there no moly lube on the top of the driveshaft?
why didn't you show the whole process of taking it apart and putting it back together again can't find a good video like that.
U must have fast
Forwarded that part
I need a rod
wow you skipped taking the pinion gear driveshaft and shift unit out and clutch dog removal
whole nother video for that
+JEREMY FOUNTAIN (THEMOWERMEDIC1) WHere is that WHOLE NOTHER VIDEO?? Looking for how to shim driveshaft without that sweet $3-400 SPECIAL TOOL...
+Tom Smith no doubt Jeremy, where's this whole mother video dude??? I'm have a hell of a time getting the drive shaft gear to go back in...
turn the prop to rotate until it goes in place
You could cut this down to 5 minutes
That's what she said
