- In this video i demonstrate how to replace the steering box in a 2007 model dodge 3500, this is the same procedure for 2003-2008 dodge 2500-3500, i prefer to use the OEM box it is an updated 6 bolt box and i have never had any issues and all my customers have been happy. The aftermarket steering gears which im sure there are some good ones out there i have not had any luck with, I like to give my customers the most reliable repairs possible. The OEM box also comes with the pitman arm and attaching tie rod which should be replaced when doing the steering box
About to go out and get started. After watching this video 20 times in two weeks I've finally talked myself into knocking it out. Great video man.
I didn’t even think about using the seatbelt to hold the wheel. Awesome video!
Cheers man
Thank you for the clear and concise instructions. Now I feel confident that I will not go from bad to worse when I change the steering box on the wife's truck.
Such a pain to do that while holding a phone, thanks for doing it!
You KNOW what you are doing!!! Thanx for the clock-spring advice !!!!
I have to say thank you! I watched a few videos of doing this before I attacked mine. Yours was by far the most direct and simple and well as good tips for different things. Even down to getting stubby wrenches. I had to go barrow them from a buddy but made a world of difference. Just wanted to take the time to thank you for taking the time to make the video. It made my job a lot easier since I don’t work on vehicles for a living.
Brandon Bunkley no problem I’m glad you found this helpful
best darn driveway video Ive seen. Thanks for the help.
no worries glad it helped
Well illustrated video. Thanks for taking the time to post this project. It will make my 05 Steering Box upgrade much easier. Thanks for sharing...
DirectCurrent no worries glad I could help,
Thank you for posting this video - it was a huge help! I ended up leaving the pitman arm attached to the linkage, but otherwise followed your steps without too much trouble. My puller wouldn't fit the pitman arm on my '08 RAM 2500, but I managed to tease it off with a cold chisel, penetrating oil, and some patience.
sp3rry awesome good to hear you managed to complete this task
nicely done. i see its a beautiful day in Canada to do this kind of work.....
Not bad my friend, I take advantage of the good weather, unlike today it’s raining horribly lol
Great job Keep it up!! very informative Keep up the details and the videos this Channel will grow.
Thanks buddy, it’s been awhile since I have made a video, I’m a manager at my day job now so it’s exhausting to try and video and repair stuff at home, but hopefully will have time soon to add another video
Great video!
I just did mine. Later seen the instructions said to center main shaft in the gearbox using the input shaft. Never did it so now it pulls to the right. Going to have to take the shafts off a recent recenter it it looks like
there is a master key on the box, if your truck is pulling that wouldn't be caused by your pitman being out regardless that would just cause it to turn sharper one way, you have an alignment issue, worn out parts or possibly a seized brake caliper if its pulling
You don’t have enough subscribers. That was AWESOME. Thank you so much for showing us this! My dad has a leak on the passenger side and we think it is power steering fluid. It’s orangish-red, just like coolant. I noticed a dark stain on his fender cover inside near the front passenger tire. I removed the fender cover and saw this tray/box that sits near the alternator and on the side/under the radiator. I can’t tell if it’s plastic or metal, but the entire trey is coated with the liquid. It is orange/red. So i searched YT to see where the steering box is (driver’s side under fender cover). Thanks for this!
Do you have an idea of what could be leaking in that spot?
Could be a heater hose, I would pressure test the cooling system
18 mm or 13/16 did not fit to take lines off, any advice. Also, inside the steering coupling that attached to the steering gear box is stripped. Should I replace it? Thanks for your help, you rock.
by no means am I a professional but I found it easier to take the entire inner fender off. You can easily reach the bolts and you don't have to snake your arms down from the top for the hydraulic lines.
I see what your saying my friend, but a lot of the times these trucks in my area the fender liner doesn’t like to come out due to all the fasteners being super rusty and the inner fender
Thanks for posting this, it was a great help! The only challenge I'm having is getting the fluid lines put into the new gearbox. Any tricks on how to get those started? I'm trying to make sure I don't cross thread them or anything but getting them started with just my fingers doesn't seem to want to work. Thanks again!
They can be a bit of a pain sometimes especially if rusty, try cleaning the threads on the line with a wire brush and turn the fitting backwards until it seats into the box, sometimes I use a stubby wrench with minimal pressure to get by the threads of their binding.
@@bradgdiesel3243 when i was reinstalling my lines….i sprayed them all with pb blaster and got myself a brass toothbrush like size and it went right past the nut and c,ea ed everything…also when i started to install them, i started with the power steering one and go it started and left it loose so i could move it out of the way….then i did the return line and lastly the power steering line…the i went back to the power steering pump and tightened them down one by one….
@@chrisallen3741 awesome, everyone has their own ways of getting things done sounds like you have a great way to do it
@@chrisallen3741 good time to drain the system too. use a combination of acetone and ATF as a lube
Should have installed the 6 bolt box.
I have my truck that bends the steering rod I changed some parts but I don't understand why the steering rod bends on two occasions
Thanks a bunch...great vid...1 question...the knuckle on the intermediate shaft that attaches to the steering box...is there a certain way for it to go on?...I'm in the process..
There is a master spline, just make sure your steering wheel is cantered and make sure your box is centered
@@bradgdiesel3243 ok..PSC box with red marked on s.shaft and box are lined up...just make sure the steering wheel is centered..correct?
@@emilyscandycakes4530 that sounds correct
@@bradgdiesel3243 thankyou
THanks for this - I'm about to do the same chore. Would not have thought of the clock spring!
Any idea how much fluid you lost?
Also, since you're going to remove the pitman arm anyway, why not leave the drag link attached to it and just leave the whole thing dangling up there while you replace the box?
ScottDLR it only takes a couple litres of atf4 for the whole system, I take the pitman arm right off because oem boxes come with new pitman arms
Why should it be replaced?
Usually it ends up with too much play or it leaks
My 2014 Ram 3500 diesel has an issue where the steering is inconsistant on curves. Feels like the pressure on the steering is intermittent. All the tie rod ends, ball joints, wheel bearings, track bar bushings, stabilizer links, and steering dampner have been checked and the loose parts replaced and the problem remains. Wondering if a steering box is the answer to remedy this or the pump, my knowledge ends at this point and I have never encountered this before, I can find forums with people having the same problem and no solutions. Any help would be great.
Swapping the steering box out fixed the problem.
What’s the part number of your pitman puller?
I have a question. I recently bought a 07 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9l cumins and a couple of days ago while I was driving it it felt like I didn’t have steering while I was making a left turn. I replaced de p/a fluid becáis it had a burnt smell. But I don’t fix anything. It doesn’t do it all the time. I took my truck to a dodge dealer and after $500 in diagnostics, they were unable to duplicate the concern. Based in your experience, what could be the cause of the steering issue? Thank you.
my guess would be that the pressure control valve is sticking up, when you are driving at higher speeds in a straight line the pressure to turn is less, when your slower making harder turns the pressure is higher,
@@bradgdiesel3243 after replacing the steering gear how do you prime the system to get all the air out? I am afraid of doing the job because my truck has 2 hoses going from the steering gear to the brake master cylinder. Any suggestions? Thank you.
@@bradgdiesel3243 the pressure control valve is built in with the pump? Or is it available by it self? Thank you in advance.
@@billycastillo2330 the pressure control is in the steering gear I would replace the whole box as they are an issue on these trucks and upgrade it to the 4 bolt box, as it goes for bleeding the air the correct way to do it is lift the front wheels off the ground and slowly turn the wheel lock to lock 10 times or so and keep topping fluid up
@@bradgdiesel3243 Thank you very much for your advise.
Attaching tie rod?
It doesn’t need to be as long as there is no play, but usually the attaching tie rod end is the first one to wear out due to its angle, make sure you check for side to side play and up and down play, side to side should be none and up and down should be none to very little
Do you have the truck lifted from the front while you toon the tie rod off ?
Omdb 1988 no I did not because you can move the pitman arm to line it back up by turning the steering wheel with the steering shaft connected,
Anyway to change the fluid out while doing this? And do you use just regular ATF to top it off?
Not a bad idea to flush the system before changing the gear, that way you don’t flush anything into your new gear, and yes i use the mopar ATF 4
@@bradgdiesel3243 thats what i was thinking. Its a 08 3500 and im doing the upgraded gear box next week so just tring to get a plan of attack together.
How did you bleed the power steering lines….im going to have to change my power steering pump too and i figure its a pain but do it both at the same time
Fill the reservoir and with the front tires turn it lock to lock engine several times, you will still have air once running and keep reservoir up it can take over half hour of driving to get rid of all air and make noises stop
I haven’t installed the tie rod end into the pitman arm yet…i figured it would be easier than jacking my tires up etc……ill start it up after a few times going from one side to the other….and i will take your advice about bleeding it….thank you so much…..i hope you dont think im not grateful , as a woman its really difficult to do certain things….but so far so good….i have everything together and it appears to be right on the money. I had marked all the items attached to the gear box…for accuracy. Thank you for your help. I really like your channel
@@chrisallen3741 no worries glad I could help
I’m needing help with something
What is that my friend?
@@bradgdiesel3243 I got it figured out thanks tho
I allwase separate my joints with a hammer
Not a bad idea, right tool for the job, I just use this method because it doesn’t damage the protective boot
@@bradgdiesel3243 ya it is a big plus to save the boot
