Hey gang! Here's another training vlog, discussing my last month of "training like Batman!" That just means training multiple styles, including boxing, bodybuiling, powerlifting, mobility, kettlebells, and more.
This month had ups and downs. The big setback being that I suffered another back injury (keeping the Batman training authentic...). It's actually an old injury coming back, which makes it especially concerning. Even moreso seeing as it follows the same pattern as my Mum and Oma - and my Mum was just diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a genetic condition.
To be clear: this isn't a terrible sentence. Chances are it wouldn't kick in for quite some time and there's no guarantee I have it. I'm rather hoping I don't! I just hope the unrelated back pain is a coincidence.
Fortunately, I recovered from that spasm. I then went on to make some real progress with my calisthenics goals (hansdtand push ups and planche). And had a great workout with my gym buddy Goof. We've been working out together since we were 18! Which is actually 18 years ago, not 14 as he claimed...

As a new father in my 40s, I am often tired going into my workouts, and I find your transparency more motivating because i relate to them. Seeing a fitness professional deal with the same real life issues and talking about them really gives me some gas in my tank, much more than polished videos with perfect workouts and physiques. Reverse hyper is a machine that takes up so much floor space of my garage. More than worth it. It saved my back, I can pull as hard as I want no worries these days. You gotta be able to take giants without worrying about your fkin back man. This goes for all of you. Build that toilet, build that back.

Same story. I go to one place that has this machine just to get relief from the pain. It works every time for my back. Also good morning with bands work as activation excersize. Other things i use is: training places that hurts with isometrics, gua sha, hot baths and later ice before resting and foam roller.
Fitness Instagrammers on PEDs are not believable. I like the Bioneer authentic style.
Great to show the realities of training while balancing family and work life. Drawbacks of getting older plus trying to get good at too many things. I think best to prioritise movements that you're most interested in and then adapt depending on health and interest. Likely that progress made in other areas will not diminish significantly.
Adam, thanks for the honesty in this Vlog. I'm in my sixties with several spine injuries, and not every day do I feel like working out. But once I get started, I do feel much better after. Your channel has helped me emencelly and helps me to keep going. Thanks for all you do.
I really enjoy seeing this type of real content Adam. Kinda like you mentioned. Too many people out there(the majority) are just posting these awesome workouts. Awesome meals. And too me it’s just not realistic. I’m 35 a dad, husband working well over the standard 40 hours a week l. Don’t get me wrong I am in great great shape. Been training consistent since I was 17. But by no means am I always feeling great. Feeling super rested. Having the best meals etc. a lot of times I’m right where you’re at with this vlog and I think it’s important to show this type of stuff cuz it’s more relatable. Cuz I am human and do kinda get down sometimes when I’m thinking I need to be grinding all the time or I had one too many donuts( I have a sweet tooth lol). Anyways I’m ranting. Love the content as always
Don't give up, Adam. I've been struggling a lot with chronic neck pain, which hasn't stopped me. It only got better because I stuck with my rehab plan and kept training.
My knee injury is back too. It really sucks but I learned a lot last time so hopefully this time recovery goes more smoothly. Hope you feel better soon.
I'm also looking to cut back on caffeine. I can't hardly sleep and it also affects my digestion. Weird synchronicity 😆

I had 3 herniated disc and spinal stenosis, eventually progressed to Cuada Equina Syndrome. I had to have emergency spine surgery and have just been cleared to workout again. Eventually I would like to return to BJJ but one day at a time.

I’ve introduced a lot of decaf into my life. There are rosters doing great decaf and it’s helped me keep my caffeine intake to a reasonable level. Like you, I love everything surrounding coffee and the taste but I cannot have caffeine past mid afternoon. I also try to do zero caffeine once per week. I hope you find a way to enjoy coffee and agree with your body.

I’m grateful you shared this video, and I feel a lot of solidarity. I’m currently in a similar boat: after training for a decade, 6 months ago I started a new program inspired by you, and I’ve been feeling the fittest and strongest I’ve ever been. However, today, after a lapse on concentration while bounding around a trampoline gym, I’m currently lying in bed with a badly sprained ankle.
I tuned in to rewatch your training through injury video, and saw this one.
I’m grateful that you’ve built this online community who value aiming to be superfunctional. I know that you, me, and everyone will overcome our struggles, provided we look out for one another and never give up!

When you describe how much you do/how busy your life is and how little sleep you get, I’m not surprised you haven’t always got a ton of energy and have been getting injured. I hope you find a way to do what’s important to you while simultaneously living with ease ☺️❤️

Thanks for sharing I have an injury right now and I'm counting the exact same concept. Mine is my big toe on my right foot. Super frustrating.
I landed badly on the same toe coming down from a handstand attempt. My foot landed half on grass and half on a tree root and it’s been sore ever since which is about 8 week ago.

I can definitely relate to your back problems i have 2 DDD L4-L5, lateral tear and a bulging disc all in my lower back so my workouts have had to change over the last two years you have to just not give up.
Watching this with lower back pain myself. Dude, you're not alone.

This is literally me right now (minus the Batman body). I had a L4-L5 slipped disc in 2021, and I thought I was well over it, but if I neglect certain exercises, I get a spasm from time to time, most recently two days ago, just moving the lawn. Good thing is I have been here before, so I know the path back to normal.
Not being able to train when you love to train sucks so bad. Right now I'm taking a "deload week" aka I did some running for the first time in a while and now my soleus muscles in BOTH LEGS are so tight I can barely walk. Kettlebell swings are a great winter workout but turns out they don't do much for your calves.

McGill big 3 is really good for your back. Good doco on it is The Gift of Injury. Though I imagine you core is pretty damn strong already but it seems to work for a lot of top athletes who swear by it.

whilst i've improved my ankle mobility over the years, i still won't squat without heel elevation/slant boards etc just because it feels so much better for my lower back and the discs in that lower lumber region
I am 40 years old and was diagnosed with spinal stenosis 3 months ago, which resulted in a two level laminectomy because my nerves were so compressed in my spine that I lost 60% strength and mobility in my legs and got foot drop in both feet, it was horrifying, long story long I’m 7 weeks out from spinal surgery and it has changed my life, still recovering but feeling 1000 times better, you can be helped, I just did my first cycling session today and it felt great, find a great neurosurgeon and get a MRI immediately, it’s the only way you will get the answers you need
That’s really encouraging, thank you! Especially for my Mum. My Oma had it and could walk for the last 15 years of her life - my Mums nightmare was getting it and now she’s just been diagnosed.
I’m concerned about her but also worried it might be in my future. Apparently my back spasms and aches have nothing to do with stenosis, but my Mum experienced the exact same issues starting around my age. So, I guess my question is: did you have a history of back spasms leading up to your diagnosis? I also get occasional tingling near my right shoulder blade 😅

Sorry for the late response, no I didn’t really have spasms but I did experience many signs of a serious problems for a few years before it got very bad, I could not Kip up, or bend my lumbar spine area back or into a back bridge at all the pain and discomfort was unbelievable and I couldn’t understand it , I wasn’t aware of it in my family history, I started noticing discomfort in my lower spine after I had laparoscopic hernia surgery once I healed from that and started martial arts again I instantly noticed something up with my back but brushed it off for 3 years until one day after a long hike I woke up with foot drop in both legs and was incredibly weak on my feet, I was terrified of surgery but my surgeon was incredible and the L3 and L4 laminectomy offered immediate relief from the nerve compression, spinal stenosis usually shows effects in much older people but unfortunately I was told I have the spine of someone 20-30 years older which really sucks but I’m dealing with it, a good neurosurgeon can make all the difference, God bless you and your family🙏 I’m wishing you all the best

i hope you don't have any damage on your back (discbulging or herniation). But i don't think so because you seem to be still very mobile and flexible.
the back spasm could be a signal of your body that you need more rest.
training is addictive and makes us less sensitive to pain and more resilient for aches and ageing.
so your advice tot train the painfree areas is solid. nevertheless we are not really bulletproof so hurting ourselves happens...

Progress is not linear. Its turns our body really doesnt care for our ego's agenda. We are fortunate it lets us fuck around and try and be batman.

I'd say stretch more drink more water and salt and avoid them foot swings they are horrible for back stenosis etc
Maybe it's not the caffeine itself but rather the kind of coffee. Drinking ligther roasts could potentially help.

Are you sure it's the coffee, and not the dairy? I had a similar problem, used to drink cappuccinos, then switched to black coffee, and it stopped. Allergies can develop at any age.

I had three herniated discs and after that i changed everything in my training the move that helped me eliminate all of back pain is hollow holds v sit front lever and human flag and rotation exercises.
I do more exercises bodyweight now but i do weights time to time to but weight becamr easy after i mastered my body weight.
I hope you will overcome it but i have not doubt about it.

Bioneer I need your help. I have had poor ankle dorsiflexion for years and the only stretch that seems to help is standing on one leg and twisting outwards so my ankle rotates externally I guess. This allows me to squat better because I can push my knees outwards more. After doing this stretch it seems like all the other ankle dorsiflexion stretches seem to work. My theory is that beforehand my knees would cave inwards during movement due to tightness on the outer parts of the ankle. My feet also would try to twist outwards when squatting (probably to compensate for my knees being inwards).
Would really appreciate you breaking down what is going on here with your fitness knowledge. Again, this is the only stretch that unlocks my ankles and there’s an instant improvement afterwards.
The stretch is this. On one leg, hands on the wall, have other leg come across my leg and use my hands to try and twist myself outwards at the ankle while keeping my grounded foot in the same place.

Where you find your background musics?
You need to relax your body a bit on that bag. You're a bit too tense when hitting the heavy bag, might not be helping your back spasms.
Practice being loose on when hitting the bag, not so much power. Drop your shoulders with your arms down, flicking your shots out. Try to stay relaxed until point of impact.
It's quite hard to stay loose when mixing weights and boxing. Great channel though 👏 keep up the good work.

I know you love barefoot shoes but have you tried heeled weightlifting shoes for squats? They make a huge difference for most people including me ........of course your mileage may vary
Heya! I have your superfunctional 2 course. Can you make an abs only module? I know abs are used throughout but a dedicated module would be good. Do you have an email somewhere?
It's wild you open the video using a steel club and then talk about back pain yet when you were using the steel Club you were extremely rigid in the hips only allowing the upper spine to move instead of letting the entire spine move. I use rotational work as active recovery in between heavy training days, and since I went down to three days a week of heavy training and 4 days a week of recovery, I've been able to maximize the health of all of my joints and if you use the club correctly or even try it in a horse stance, maybe use a mace instead, and let the spine do a lot of the work while using the elbows and not the wrists to pull the weight, you should see your body shifting around your spine which will give you increased blood flow to the area and the joints will get to move freely as they are supposed to, compared to you standing there oh so rigid basically resisting the chance of becoming more lubricated in the spine
If you're not sure what I'm saying, Adam, try standing rigid and doing an uppercut and seeing how awkward it feels and then try rotating the spine in the hips and do the uppercut and you will notice more fluidity. Staying grounded, grab the club and do the same thing, rotating your body and elbow towards where you want to push the handle so that the weight will then take over going behind you and then you pull it over with the other elbow while rotating your spine in the other direction. That fluidity is what will allow more to happen within the joints instead of you trying to resist it as if you are doing a halo with a different object, because casting a club is not the same thing as a halo with a weight plate or a kettlebell

Thanks for sharing things "going wrong". This shows that everyone has their struggles and it's about finding solutions and carrying on. Life in general is a bumpy road and so is training sometimes.

That comment near the beginning about “better than nothing” really stuck out to me because I don’t hear that very often on fitness RUclips and it made me realise that I wish I heard it more often. Coming to accept and even embrace the idea that I can and should work out even if it’s not 100% of what I would like to do has been a game changer for me. Some days, once I get going, I even discover that I have more fuel in the tank than I first thought.
I had awful back issues some years ago. Tons of physio, loads of watching ‘bad back’ video exercises and until I had an MRI I was wasting my time and money, discs prolapsed and spinal fracture. Watching this video reminds me of that time. Careful training and proper research into the problems got me from finding walking difficult to running 100km ultramarathons. If I ever get a back issue I stop and rest up. Best lesson out of it all was to not try and push through the pain. Find something else to do to keep mobile and active. Keep up the great work Adam your work is gold
i think a great way to keep your back strong without straining it would be bearhug carries. you can use a lighter weight for long distance. i used my bodyweight yesterday and my whole back is smoked(in a good way) and even my hamstrings are sore deapite only hinging a few times to lap and grab the bag
also the behind the back deadlift with heel elevation is pretty decent for quads if squatting is hard. it ends up being almost like a pin squat if you do deadstop reps. very back friendly as the weight sits right below the hips.

I got back spasms and issues for years. Turns out it wasn’t directly my back that was the issue.
Try daily stretching and strengthening on the following muscles;
Glute medius, quadratus lumborum, rectus femoris and hip flexors.
The first two especially!!!
STOP SQUATING WITH ANY LOAD ON YOUR SPINE AND MOVETO SINGLE LEG MOVEMENTS ONLY. DAILY HANGING LEG RAISES AND SINGLE LEG HIP THRUSTS. Higher volume.

I believe your idiocy may be contagious. I’ve found, since moving away from the typical bro splits and towards a more functional and playful style of workout, highly influenced by your videos and books, it takes more discipline to take a rest day than it does to actually lace up my shoes and get my workout in.
This is something I would recommend to anyone who is struggling with motivation. Forget numbers, forget progressive overload and anything technical. Just get to the gym, or take a kettlebell to the park, go for a walk, do a few sprints, whatever, but have fun with it. Before you know it you won’t be able to keep yourself away.
You may find this silly just taking about your day diary style, but it matters to see how the complications of life isn’t a failure but rather an opportunity to change plans and do good enough instead of quitting if situations aren’t perfect.
I say this as a fellow father trying to keep up with everything but you sound as tired as me lol i do love these vlogs but i hope you feel better physically and mentally. Its a weirdly frustrating time in general right now it seems.
You would love the work of Ross Enamait. He's a boxing coach known for developing power punchers and has trained champions like Katie Taylor. He's gone quiet now, but he's got a couple of infamous training manuals designed for fighters with a cult-like following, which would be right up your alley.
Hands down, the ONE channel that got me hardcore into functional strength and functional fitness training when I got back into physical training 3 months ago (after over 5 years off). I follow quite a few different fitness/training channels. But this is the ONE channel that specifically talks about and discusses functional strength and functional fitness in all its aspects. And in detail too.

Back and hip strains seem closely related, been dealing with that for decades. Overuse probably the core issue. Lots of manual labor...
Don’t envy you not being able to drink coffee! (I practically live for my morning fix). Sorry for stating the obvious, but have you tried substituting tea? My own favorite is probably Japanese sencha or jasmine, but I also like labsong souchong and earl grey. I think green tea in particular has a pretty high caffeine content but without the gastrointestinal effects…
Have you considered trying to do a challenge or event? In America we have things like the Spartan Race or the Tough Mudder. Maybe adding some yearly or semi annual events will give you things to work towards and help you stay out of any kind of rut. Competition keeps us young
Bro accidentally did a workout on his deload week. That's when you know ur training is fun
re left foot moving out when doing squats, relax your left gastrocnemius & massage the lateral and medial head separately, if the lateral head is a lot more tender than the medial then you have a bad movement pattern, possibly when running.
Not that I'm impatient for it but handing off the channel to a young person 30 years from now would be a cool transition
